Shooting Stars: Episodes 5-6

The theme of this week is rumors, and seeing misquoted conversations of celebrities landing on the tabloids make us wonder how many rumors we’ve believed to be true and how many truths we’ve believed to be lies. With rumors come denials and for some of our characters, we wonder if denial is just a river in Egypt or a defense mechanism to protect their hearts.

EPISODES 5-6 WEECAP

A jealous Tae-sung interrupts Han-byeol and Soo-hyuk’s moment, and in his famous whisper pose, he threatens her with the paycheck deduction if she doesn’t come to his drama shoot. I just want to smack him upside his petty little head.

But he isn’t the only actor good at driving people crazy. Jae-hyun cuts his hair disrupting the continuity of a scene and stresses Yoo-sung out. Dae-soo is also going through it at the hand of his actress, JIN YOO-NA (Lee Si-woo) who insists on wearing a particular outfit to shoot, though it also disrupts the continuity of that scene. All his pleas cannot get her to change her mind, and I wonder if “Yooo-na-ya” is even allowed to do that. Lol.

On the other hand, work never stops for Han-byeol even while she’s on set, and while Tae-sung expects her to concentrate on watching his performance, she’s either on the phone or her laptop. Eventually, he tells her to leave and she happily does, oblivious to his very obvious disappointment.

That evening, Soo-hyuk is still at work thinking about Han-byeol when he gets a call from her concerning work matters. For someone who clocks out by 6pm, he’s only too happy to work overtime so he can spend more time with her. Or should I say spend more time smiling at her and making my heart flutter. At a later work meeting, he even raises eyebrows from the others when he tells Han-byeol she can contact him for work matters outside of work hours. Tae-sung, honey, you’ve got some serious competition!

Finally, Da-hye, the most successful fangirl as far as Shooting Stars is concerned, gets to shoot her first scene with “Tae-sung oppa.” She manages to stay professional during the shoot thanks to Yoo-sung’s presence on set, which calms her nerves — and inadvertently serves as a reminder to Tae-sung that Han-byeol is absent.

A rumor about his smelly hair has Tae-sung almost scrubbing off his scalp and disappointingly, we don’t get a shampoo PPL. But we get an adorable scene of Jung-yeol smelling his hair and giving him progress reports on some secret mission that somehow seems to have roped Bo-in in. It appears that he is conducting a popularity poll between Yoo-sung and Soo-hyuk. And Soo-hyuk, whose rank is rising fast in the polls, just happens to have moved next door to Tae-sung. Aha!

As a favor to her professor, Han-byeol gives a lecture at her university and gets reminded of back in the day when rumors went round that she was dating Tae-sung. Apparently, their famous throwback picture was for a promotional brochure in the university and people just assumed they were in a relationship.

Han-byeol denies it again to the professor, citing the misery the resulting rumors caused her. But from the professor, we learn that Tae-sung, knowing how much the rumors affected her, had paid for the brochures to be destroyed and pledged himself as a promotional lamb to be sacrificed for subsequent brochures even years after their graduation. Awwww.

When Han-byeol relates the story – minus the identity of the male lead – to Ki-bbeum, Ki-bbeum says the guy probably liked her, but Han-byeol is quick to shut down that thought. Denial much?

Ki-bbeum smiles over a text from an actor (cameo by Chae Jong-hyeop) she exchanged numbers with after an interview, but it turns out he texts every reporter who interviews him. Pfffft.

Meanwhile, Han-byeol belatedly thanks Tae-sung for helping her with the promotional brochure and though he acts like it’s no big deal, we see he’s happy about it.

Tae-sung passes on some interview questions to Han-byeol through Jung-yeol, saying she knows him best and can answer them for him. But Jung-yeol, who has been recruited by our resident TaeByeol shippers, happily texts the group with updates. I luff him!

One of the questions is about the most memorable moment in Tae-sung’s life, and when Han-byeol lists out a couple of them for him to pick from, a sleepy Tae-sung remarks that she was part of all those moments. He then tells her not to go anywhere and falls asleep with his head on her shoulder. But she pushes his head off and walks out, clearly affected by the moment.

Soo-hyuk stops to say hello to Han-byeol at work and she notes that they have been running into each other a lot lately. He tells her he moved next door to Tae-sung and suggests hosting a housewarming party for the PR team.

After being dropped off at home, Tae-sung tells Jung-yeol not to come to work the next morning and Jung-yeol thinks he has done something wrong. But Tae-sung just wants him to sleep in and Jung-yeol breaks into the most adorable smile. Awww. He’s so cute!

Tae-sung then gets into the most awkward elevator ride with his new neighbor, Soo-hyuk. He tells Soo-hyuk that he’s very close to Han-byeol, in fact, they’re best friends. And when Soo-hyuk mentions that he was with Han-byeol “up until now,” Tae-sung sends him the death glare.

Han-byeol wishes for some romance in her life, and when Ho-young asks if her heart has ever beat for someone, she thinks about the scene with sleepy Tae-sung. Of course, Han-byeol says she has never had such heart fluttering feelings for anyone and then flushes down her denial with beer.

Meanwhile, Tae-sung goes over his script where the characters begin to date after being with each other “up until now.” He remembers Soo-hyuk’s statement in the elevator and, upset, he flings the script away and tosses and turns in bed all night. Lol.

Netizens spot Tae-sung’s very blurry reflection on a stainless bowl in a picture uploaded by Da-hye during a meal with their staff. (This is totally giving off Changmin and Victoria spoon scandal vibes!)

The picture sparks a dating rumor, and Han-byeol calls Tae-sung to fact check. She says it’s a relief that the rumors are false, and just as Tae-sung is getting happy about it, she clarifies that she feels relief because the PR team does not need to lie. Jung-yeol doesn’t hear the conversation, but from Tae-sung’s body language, it appears like the two had a lover’s quarrel.

To debut, Shi-deok needs to lose his accent and change his name, but in the meantime, Ho-young takes him to visit the filming location. They find out the production needs an urgent replacement for an actor who speaks with the Gyeongsang-do accent and luckily, Shi-deok does.

When the director asks for his name, he goes, “Kang…” and a quick thinking Ho-young darts a glance at Yoo-sung — who’s standing a few paces away — and completes the name. Kang Shi-deok has now become Kang Yoo-sung.

At an interview for their upcoming drama, Tae-sung is asked to describe his ideal type and Da-hye perks up beside him. He says his ideal type is someone he feels comfortable around like a good friend, and the TaeByeol shippers turn to face Han-byeol immediately. Tae-sung has all but confessed to her at this point, hasn’t he?

Soo-hyuk mentions that he’s throwing a housewarming party for the PR team at StarForce and his office manager (Yoo Young-min) asks if he likes Han-byeol. He admits he does, and okay! The love triangle has officially begun.

While driving, Jung-yeol gets a call from his girlfriend, and Tae-sung is surprised to hear that his manager is in a relationship. Me too! This gets Tae-sung thinking about Han-byeol and it drives him crazy.

Ki-bbeum and her fellow reporter/ex-boyfriend (cameo by Oh Eui-shik) stakeout an actress and her boyfriend, and afterwards, they get into an argument over who gets to break the exclusive first. But right in the middle of the argument, they’re bested by the actress who reveals it on her SNS. What’s the difference between reporters and stalkers again?

Tae-sung lies that his TV is broken and comes to watch the premiere episode of his new drama with Ji-hoon and the PR trio. While the others react to the drama, Han-byeol is silent and Tae-sung itches to hear her say something, but he gets nothing. Afterwards, he asks for her thoughts about the drama and she says his character seems cool. He then asks what she thinks about him and she goes silent.

One thing about Tae-sung is his consistency, either in looking for new ways to annoy Han-byeol or about his ideal type which has always been Han-byeol. But in the past, he confirmed a dating rumor between himself and actress, YEO HA-JIN (cameo by Moon Ga-young as her character in Find me in Your Memory), and dashed all of Han-byeol’s hopes. Now I understand why she has set a clear boundary with him — she’s just protecting her heart.

It’s clear that Tae-sung is crazy about her, and at some point, I’m going to need him to stop showing his affection for Han-byeol only behind the scenes. I mean, how is a girl supposed to know you like her if you don’t say it to her face? I bet Soo-hyuk is going to confess to Han-byeol before Tae-sung does. Maybe that’s the wake-up call he needs to act on his feelings.

In other news, I’m so curious about that divorced actress, her relationship with Tae-sung, and what Yoo-sung has to do with all of it. Who is this Yoo-sung guy anyway? And why does he give off this secretive and suspicious vibe?

I hope we get to unravel this mystery soon. In the meantime, I’ve decided to just roll with the thin plot of the drama and enjoy the humor. Shooting Stars has a lot of laugh out loud moments, and maybe that’s all the drama needs.

this drama really isn't what i expected. but after i took some time to accept that i've really been enjoying it. it's so funny and i like all the characters. there's nothing really deep and sometimes that's ok.

my love for jungyeol grows each episode

My basis for a good movie/show is if it stays with me the morning after. And ep 6's epilogue had me thinking. This really just might be my new favorite romcom. 💗

I find it very bizarre that he is just now realizing he has a crush on her, sir what did you think was happening? It now makes sense why she is mostly unimpressed by him, she had a crush, he ended up with some else and she moved on. I love that for her, honestly. Also the lawyer is petty and hilarious.

Jung Yeol is my favorite though, he is so precious, and when he was sprucing that silly haircut and I just loved him even more.

Chae Jong Yup, coming in and flirting with all the noona reporters is my new favorite thing. He said I am going to use my face, megawatt smile, and earnestness to make sure they don't write bad things about me. When they all realize what he is doing, I genuinely feel bad for his character, lmao.

Finally, Yu Na(in his sing song voice), lol. So funny.

Now that we've left 'Africa' behind, I'm really enjoying this drama. It's especially working for me as a workplace drama, because I'm getting a feel for what people actually do in their jobs. Things like the friendly-yet-adversarial relationships between the PR people and the journalists, or between rival managers, are really well shown.

The pacing is really good, too - no waiting around while the director makes sure that you are feeling whatever it is you are supposed to be feeling.

One thing, though - I feel Yoo-sung (despite his mysteriousness) is a better match for Han-byeol than either of the other two guys. They are clearly on the same wavelength, trust each other, are both level-headed and dependable. I know the drama won't go this way, but I can see Tae-sung going completely obsessive and deranged to the point of a restraining order, while Soo-hyuk proves to be dull, leaving Han-byeol and Yoo-sung to bond over clearing up the mess.

I agree about Yoo-sung being a good match for Han-byeol. In fact I'd be more inclined to SLS if he was the second lead because I find Soo-hyuk sort of charmless and uninteresting.

Agreed about Yoo-sung. I’m not getting SLS vibes from him either, but I wouldn’t have minded if the show went there with him. I find him far more interesting than Soo-hyuk. His friendship with Han-byul feels comfortable and they just seem like similar souls.

I love Yoo-sung so much! Yoo-sung would be such a nice catch in real life. He's really good at his job, easygoing, and nice. He just gets along with everyone. He is the perfect office-friend. Soo-hyuk is nice, but aloof, so he's more like a coworker you have a good working relationship with, but you're not going to get lunch together.

Seems like Ha-young has a crush on Yoo-sung.

Ho-young and Yoo-sung would be cute together, now that I think of it. Not sure if it’s gonna lead somewhere since Si-deok’s in the picture, but it’s a possibility.

I was wondering if maybe Tae-sung and Yoo-sung (see similar type names) could be brothers or half brothers or step brothers... Just an idea. Both of them seem to be connected and affected by this mysterious, older actress.

I feel like I’m the only person in the world who’s not getting SLS for Soo-hyuk. I get that he’s handsome and a catch due to his calm personality and profession, but he does nothing for me. He’s a nice face and that’s it.

I adore Jung-yeol with all my heart. He’s such a pure soul and his growing friendship with Tae-sung is so much fun to watch. I love that he’s got a girlfriend too. He deserves the love!

I really liked that Han-byul was shown genuinely moving on from her lingering feelings for Tae-sung after he confirmed that relationship (sidenote: Moon Ga-young, I love you so much!). That’s an outcome realistic to real life crushes. I don’t think either party was wrong. Han-byul shouldn’t be hung up over a guy who (seemingly to her) has no interest in her and Tae-sung should be able to date whoever he wants, weird parasocial “rules” about celebrities dating be damned. The only problem is that Tae-sung is so obviously, shamelessly infatuated with Han-byul that other relationships for him are probably doomed.

I want to say I’d be stronger than those reporters falling for Chae Jong-hyeop’s shtick, but let’s be honest, I would be down bad. No defence against the pretty.

I actually don’t get mysterious vibes from Yoo-sung at all? I’ll probably be proven wrong soon, but for now, he just seems like a friendly and competent person who’s well-connected and dedicated to his job. I like his character.

Now that the drama has mostly stopped with the incessant “Africa” name drops (what country, mate?), I’m finding it much more fun. It’s still not perfect - the pacing and editing needs some work - but it’s a solidly enjoyable ride. The BGM choices in particular crack me up everytime. Nothing this week may have topped the previous Heirs and Titanic references, but it continues to be comedic gold.

May the BGM continue to be funny and the
~Yu-uu-na~‘s remain charming.

Forgot to add this to my behemoth of a comment, but oh my god, I can’t believe someone else thought of the Changmin + Victoria spoon incident. Man, that was something. K-pop “scandals” are absolutely insane. It’s either bullsh-t like this or actual crimes being committed - no in betweens.

The ending of ep 6..oomph! The contrast between the hilariously unemotional and efficient way she handled the naengmyun bowl dating rumor and the heartbreak of the dating non-rumor from when she was in love with Tae-sung years ago. It was the wise thing to do give up on her crush.

Now it's Taesung's turn to go through the emotional rollercoaster because of his crush on her. I'm still surprised he didn't realize he was crushing on her for at least well over a year. Looking for letters from her and looking for her in the background of a video chat didn't clue him in?

So many LOL scenes with all the funny behind-the-scenes things that can happen with managing actors or just working in the entertainment business, but my fave moment has got to be when Taesung was describing his ideal type and the PR ladies and Jung-Yeol whipped their heads to Han-byeol at once.

There must be a backstory to Tae Sung's supposed celebrity relationship, given how he's been smitten with her since their university days (and how the show has been giving us snippets of TS repeatedly helping out Han Byeol behind the scenes, even to this day). But yes, it is a little unrealistic that he's realized his feelings now.

Yoo-sung can come across as suspicious, but the actor does such a good job of making him so likable and charming.

Our couple is slowly making progress. Tae-sung is slowly realizing that he is in love with Han-byeol (I thought that he has known this for a while). Han-byeol slowly realizes that Tae-sung is not such a selfish jerk after all and seems to be wavering. She seems to see the lawyer only as a colleague.
From the looks of it, Han-byeol and Tae-sung were friends at best during college. It wasn't until Han-byeol started working at the agency that she fell in love with Tae-sung, but that ended unhappily, so she will be all the more careful now. So Tae-sung will have to work hard to convince her.

Yoooooo-naaaaa could probably drive even a saint crazy.

And wonderful how the group of Tae-sung-Han-byeol shippers in the agency is getting bigger and bigger.

This drama is fun. It's interesting how I care about every character and not only the leads. I like them but I'm not so excited about their love story or their scenes like I do in usual romances in Kdrama.

Yuu~na~yaa is unbearable but her CEO's frustration is so funny to watch.

Shi-deok's new name quest was pretty funny. I don't understand why they changed their name so easily...

Yoo-sung's professionnalism is nice to watch. I really like this character and his frienship with Han-byeol. I like her professionnalism too, it would be nice she could stay as peaceful with Tae-sung too :p

Didn't expect to see a potato boy cameo in there - seeing his killer smile unexpectedly over the weekend makes the next episodes of Love All Play feel even more further away now! I said this last week but this week only cemented it, its the supporting character's who are increasingly carrying the show for me - the little things that happen in the background/small scenes that explore the other employees lives are everything. This week's highlights have to be the two managers watching on in exasperation at Yuna and Jaehyun who can't stop giggling at each other, and resident soft boi Jungyeol carefully combing his uneven fringe while TS is freaking out about his hair smelling. Also wondering, given the amount of uh, eye candy we've been doled out since the beginning - is Kim Youngdae contractually obliged to have his muscles on show in at least once scene each episode? I'm not complaining though!

That scene between Yuna and Jaehyun, when after they couldn't stop giggling they were told to remember their saddest moments and Yuna remembered a Hermes bag she lost out on, and Jaehyun remembered the death of his grandmother 10 years ago, and they played the scene in a really mournful way, was the laugh out loud moment of this last episode for me.

For Tae Sung, I think its funny how his gym workouts, his modeling, and his "acting" all involve striking poses, as if he's totally internalized being always on display. The muscle exposure is impressive as well!

Yes! That entire scene was chefs kiss, between Yoona & Jaehyun being so extra to the drama team and managers reactions in response. Those two are fast becoming unexpected scene stealers, bless!

Oh Han Byeol is such a tough nut to crack that i almost gave up on her ever getting Tae Sung’s mega-crush ( even though he never says anything! Grrrr) until they served up that epilogue 🥲 The quartet shippers of TaeByeol is hilarious! I really think if they ever do date, the news leak will probably accidentally come from their own team.

What was that look ho yeong was giving su yeong (the manager) in ep 6? Is show suddenly giving her a crush on him? Seems a bit weird for now..

For these kind of light romantic comedies, I usually am laser-focused on the female lead, who is often the most interesting and appealing character. For this one, though, I just can't seem to work up much interest in Han-Byeol, even though I have great deal of good will for the actress because of her role in Weightlifting Fairy. I really like the character of Ho-Young, though. It does seem a little out of the blue giving her a crush, but I wasn't noticing her interaction with Yoo-Sung prior to this.
The office ladies are really funny, and one of the highlights of the drama!

Yup i agree abt HB, i really like LSK and have always enjoyed her acting but it feels like this character is a tad too hard on TS. But then as viewers we have the privilege of seeing his hopeless giant crush while all she sees is a demanding attention seeker bully 😅

I was shipping Ho Young n Si Deok so the kind of adoring look she was shooting at Su Young (during the drama-in-drama airing i think) seemed out of place.

I feel I'm missing something: where are the comments about Tae-sung only just now realising he has a crush on Nan-byeol coming from? I thought he'd been pretty clear with himself all along what his feelings are: he just lacks the tools to express himself well (which is obviously bollocks for a trained actor, but that's the kind of thing I can easily accommodate in suspension of disbelief).

Also, isn't Jung-yeol's girlfriend going to turn out to be Bo-in, the rookie on the PR team? I thought previous episodes were clearly pointing in that direction.

I thought it was suddenly realizing that he was "in really deep" or something like that--I forget the exact wording of the translation. That would be slightly different from just discovering his feelings about her--it would be realizing just how much he was in love. But I don't know its that central a point, in any case.

I think the key thing for the plausibility of the show is how Tae-sung reforms as he tries to win Han-Byeol over. The show has already established that he is genuinely good hearted, so that's not an issue. The problem is that its also well established that he is way too often a petulant child, whose primary way of showing affection is through teasing and being purposefully irritating. I'm not sure how he overcomes those qualities, which seem baked in to his character, to make him a worthy partner of Han Byeol, though.

The real reason I'm rooting for a TS and HB relationship, though, is seeing the way the show handles the whole dating scandal that will undoubtedly ensue.

Thank you, I hadn't properly processed his "I'm in trouble" exclamation.

I think my favourite part from this weekend's episodes has to be Tae-Sung sulking dramatically in the 'rain' and telling Han'Byeol to "just go if she's going to be like this" like the show is building up to some kind of charged confrontation but instead of asking what he means she just... bails. Straight up just yeets herself off set so fast it left him gobsmacked.

Comedy gold! I re-watched it so many times lol

I actually really like the FL/ML pairing, especially the contrast between the characters' overall presentation - she's light, sweet, and deceptively cute and he's dark, devilish, and deceptively rude. The way Tae-sung looked around for Han-byeol after every filming scene was hilarious. Did she see me being handsome? Did she see me being romantic? Did she see me being kick-ass in the fight scene? Did she see me crying in the rain? I am all these awesome men rolled into one, just for her! Look at me, look at me!

Tae-sung's fuzzy purple sweater in episode 6 is the greatest fuzzy purple sweater in the history of kdrama fuzzy purple sweaters. It's the apotheosis of fuzzy purple sweaters. I have eyes only for it. Nothing else matters.

I’m not sure if it’s a trope, but off the top of my head: Lee Jong-suk in Romance is a Bonus Book. Choi Woo-shik in Our Beloved Summer. Jang Hyuk at the end of Fated to Love You. Gong Woo in Goblin. My favorite scenes were the epilogue scenes for the part where Han Byeol was in whatever Tae Sung has achieved in. From graduating in university, being there experiencing the joy of Tae Sung in a movie selling 10 million tickets, to being there when he won best actor award and to the day she bid him farewell on his trip to Africa. They do have a special relationship not only as manager or an actor and that is what I love about these two. They bicker like kids, have the biggest of crushes inside their heart, but they are there always for one another no matter what.

I'm really enjoying this frothy rom com at the moment. I like the interactions between our leads and will be delighted to see Tae Sung suffer for a few episodes at the hands of Soo Hyuk. Judging by his comment in the lift, he knows what way the wind is blowing and is not averse to a bit of knife twisting!
Also, Soo Hyuk seems to be the opposite to Tae Sung, in that he quickly realises what/who he likes and goes for it, as opposed to Tae Sung who apparently has only just realised he's had a crush for 10 years...Let the battles begin!
The epilogue gave us a lot of context for Han Byeol, I doubt she will be in a hurry to get together with Tae Sung unless there is some serious self reflection and change in approach from him. I'd love to see her go on a few dates with Soo Hyuk first...
And Yooooo Naaah yaaah is hilarious.

So I’m confused and i’m hoping someone can shed some light on this. I feel like I don’t really clearly understand what the actual backstory between the two leads are. So they went to school together and they were acquaintances? Or just classmates? Or they were actually friends? Even the way we see them interracting in flashbacks after they start working at the same agency, in different roles allbeit, I feel like I don’t really understand what the actual relationship is. At the end of the day it almost seems like they take each other for granted. Which is its own matter. But it’s almost like that “connection” is used as a basis for something more when it’s not even clear with the basis is.

I also don’t really understand the veracity of the dating rumor that was allegedly true back in the day. Because if the male lead has liked the female lead this whole time, why would he…

On second hand I know this;
An actress was on set. Her husband was visiting that day.
A magazine wanted to take a photo. Her husband didn't like to be a celebrity, so he just stayed out of sight, while another actor, born in England, who would love to get a bit of extra publicity, got in the shot with her, as a colleague and friend.
The story told in the magazine was "Love or Career?" and said that she was facing a hard choice between continuing her career in Denmark or go with her love to the States and an uncertain future.
It was not just a biased retelling, there was nothing true in that article at all. He wasn't her boyfriend or lover ... he wasn't even an American!
