Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

Currently covering: Love All Play

My Liberation Notes: Oof, last weekend’s episodes nearly killed me. They were beautifully done, and the time-jumping and editing made it even more so, but my heart was not prepared for any of that, and it hit quite hard. I felt like my heart was being steamrolled and then reversed over, so by the time we got to the ending scenes with Mi-jung and Gu, I gobbled up those smiles like nobody’s business.

Shooting Stars: Haven’t watched this week’s episodes yet but I need something cute and silly badly; all my other dramas (ahem, Liberation and Love All Play) have been so sad and heavy.

Kiss Sixth Sense: With my beloved Yoon Kye-sang and Kim Ji-suk here, there’s no way I couldn’t tune in. And the two premiere episodes were kinda just what I expected: a typical setup, really high production value, and the promise of kisses to come. For a drama that had to set up a lot of “fantasy” elements, they did it in a fun way, and for some reason I’m relieved I enjoyed the drama as much as I did — especially with my disappointment level over Welcome to Wedding Hell (don’t bother, folks).

Currently covering: Again My Life, Woori the Virgin

Showtime Begins!: I found my attention dwindling a little bit this week as the plot ditched the murder-of-the-week pattern in favor giving more precedence to the possessed serial killer that’s running loose. Although the romance — and Cha-woong’s jealousy — were amped up, I missed seeing our cop-magician duo pairing up to solve a new case. The bowling scene kind of made up for it, though.

Shooting Stars: Part of me feels like the drama jumped the shark a little bit by having the housekeeper turn out to be a stalker fan, but I have otherwise been entertained by the bits of suspense her character has added to the plot. Not sure that I’ve enjoyed it to the point that we need to include a second vengeful character, but maybe it will all come together in the end. I’m honestly anticipating our couple’s romance going public more than anything else because I’m curious to see how the company will react to and handle the inevitable scandal.

The Sound of Magic: I’ve only watched the first episode of this one so far, but I like it. I’m not usually a fan of musicals or the mean girl trope, but this one is drawing me in with the visuals — both the cinematography and the actors. (Hellllllloooooo, Hwang In-yub!) I’ll finish this one, but I might pace myself. It hasn’t quite grabbed me enough that I want to place it at the top of my priority list and binge though all six episodes in one sitting, but we’ll see. That might change after another episode.

COMPLETED
Tomorrow - The way Joong-gil found out his past was a little underwhelming but overall I quite liked the finale and where all our leads ended up. 👏 for the stylist who put Lee Soo-hyuk in a vest.

ONGOING
Again My Life - They've basically left most of the actual revenge for the last 2 episodes. Let's see how it goes.

Shooting Stars - I tried watching the episodes I'd missed and the overt-the-top stalker/anti drama is killing me. What happened to this show 😮. Paused and will binge when it ends.

Our Blues - Glad the Eun-hui and Mi-ran story wrapped up reasonably well.

My Liberation Notes - Well that was a bit of a gut-punch. Cried off and on through most of Ep. 14. I'm okay with the fast-forwarded life of everyone but the ending felt a bit dissonant.

From Now On, Showtime - I like that he already knows about the past life connection and is working through it.

Red Heart - Didn't get around to it this week.

Love All Play - Couldn't finish Ep. 11. Also paused.

Our Blues: I appreciate how the drama is exploring issues that are typically ignored in k-dramas. I was happy to see someone with Down Syndrome onscreen. This kind of representation is so important. Mi-ran and Eun-hee’s plotline ended up being one of my favorites.

My Liberation Notes: The drama did an excellent job showing the different facets of grief. I loved the little touches like Gi-jung washing mom’s clothes and one of the side dishes mom made going bad. The family’s trip to the beach was really touching. Less successful was Mi-jung’s plot with her boss and coworker and as always, the romantic relationships are the weakest part for me.

Bloody Heart: This week was pretty unpredictable. Yoo Jung has taken center stage, and I am here for it. I love a strong, smart female lead. The King is actually more like the typical female lead, ruled by his emotions and kind of dumb. Yoo Jung and the Queen Dowager are definitely the most interesting characters.

Shooting Stars: There was too much focus on the romance this week and not enough on the side characters. The housekeeper plot was dumb, but I could deal with it because celebrities do have crazy fans or anti-fans. The last thing this drama needs though is yet another revenge plot. Just give me the managers and PR team having to deal with funny celebrity hijinks.

Love All Play: God, I hate Tae-joon’s parents. That is all.

Showtime Begins!: This week’s episodes were not my favorites. As I knew they would, the evil spirit and past lives plots have sucked the fun out of the show. Sigh.

Green Mothers’ Club: This drama never quite knew what it wanted to be but there was something about it that kept me watching. I wish it had focused on the relationship between the mothers and left out the murder mystery, the drug plotline and the Louis/Rhea plotline, but everything was wrapped up. I rooted for Eun-pyo throughout even though most everyone seemed to hate her.

Welcome to Wedding Hell: Boring. I barely made it through the first episode. I didn’t like either character, or the actors, for that matter.

CRICKET -

i don't much like IPL but like to have some daily cricket so watching and Rajasthan Royals have reached the finals. yes yes yes.

This is so for shane warne. They must win the final.

Test summer is fast approaching England and what is ticket price for a day - 75+ pounds for casual seats - 110+ pounds for near ground seats - add food and travel then you have to spend like 170 pound a day for 1 day of cricket . woah. what world they live in. This is ridiculous. And as usual not much response from people.

JAPAN -

The only show to go for - WARU - 7.5 out of 10 - 7.5 alone is enough to attract attention.

Kanakana - 7 out of 10 - another manga to tv drama. has shiraishi sei.

Honest Real Estate - 6/10 - keep watching this time pass typical japanese drama.

Rent a girlfriend getting a tv drama - waste of time

Namba MG5 and my Family as per Oricon survey doing pretty well with family and young audience.

I finished watching "Don't call it mystery" and not sure which new Japanese show I should start. Currently just watching old Studio Ghibli films whenever I crave some Japanese fare.

A few theaters in my city are showing a few Japanese Animes (old and new alike) in a sort of festival. But the times are super odd, mostly working hours. So looking for suggestion.

I am sitting on fence about Honest Real Estate. Yamapi shows can be hit or miss for me.

I don't like shoujo romance fluff so avoid them at all cost. Yamapis show is typical Japanese episodic drama which mostly are seen as slightly preachy by audience.

I'm not recommending - My Family( is interesting) goes slow in between, tabe acts for most part like a prop but story does have that pull.
Also Jizoku - father-daughter trying to find a partner. This one is going under radar of most but in my views its quite good one.

Waru - is a hit among citizens as well as foreign audience(whoever is watching it)

Going to check all of them. One of my biggest problem is finding options to watch Japanese shows on a legal platform. I live in Europe and that makes it harder to find options to watch all of this legally. (I already subscribed to Netflix, Prime, Viki and not sure if there is anything exclusive for Japanese shows)

Hey @catocat, when does Shiraishi Sei show up in Kanakana? This show works surprisingly well for only 15min per episode - in the early eps you almost forget when watching how short it is. It has a lot of "Kotaro wa Hitorigurashi" feelings to the production. Also, nice to see Maeda Gordon's timing getting better and better each drama he does.

Eguchi Noriko is really hitting a purple patch. She has that ability to partner and so often brings something surprising to her roles.

For me, It feels like I can sense the shrinking budgets every season. So, this year looks to be following the trend from last year where the most interesting JDramas really weren't the big names. It looks like the standouts are those that can craft out the most interesting mix of cast/writing/location where a production can only be splurge (just a little) on one. In this current environment the big names appear to just skew it too far in one direction.

KOREA -

Chad Hero - 4/10 - the show gone completely dumb. One of the worst wishful idiocy. You don't expect much from its audience.

Mentally unstable 30's - 4/10 Mother is the better one and actually made show better watch. Rest is forced cooked food that has no substance at all. Its edgy all in all with convenient movements and events.

smiley managers - 4.5/10 - everything works except the romance.

It's Beautiful Now - 6/10 - After 16 episodes story hasn't moved much at all. Elder Brother and lawyer couple is the working one.

Green Mothers’ Club (Series review) - Mood progression: D+ / D+ / D / D / D / D- / D- / D-
How hard was it to have a drama that’s about the unlikely friendship that bloomed between mothers as they navigated through their roles as a housewife/mother/wife while trying to maintain their own self-identities? Instead, I’m ending the show feeling sorry that the cop didn’t divorce Eun Pyo who couldn’t even prioritise her own family. One big giant mess?

My Liberation Notes (Episode 13-14) - Mood: B-
I don’t know what to feel about Mr Gu reuniting with Mi Jeong: if he hasn’t resolved his gang life, chances are that they will separate again in the near future. It also seems like he came back on a whim and isn’t committed to prioritising her in his life? Gi Jeong: your mom’s death was supposed to enlighten you how hard it is to be one, why are you pushing it?

Shooting Stars (Episode 9-10) - Mood: C-
The housekeeper, mom and Yoo Na’s manager all being separate traumas for Tae Sung isn’t good: I was hoping for the 3 arcs to be resolved once and for all when the show has so many couples (5) to develop for us. l hope the reporter will get some actual screen time now that she’s a consolation prize: it sounds terrible but something is better than nothing.

Note after Episode 11: Yoo Sung, you had many opportunities to tell Tae Sung you were in contact with Eun Si Woo.

Kiss Sixth Sense (Episode 1-2) - Mood: C-
Talk about being subtle when trying to confirm your precognition! I’m sure that’s not going to cause misunderstandings for Ye Sool. The plot and characters are pretty paint-by-numbers but I won’t deny it’s a breezy watch. I hope, but don’t expect, that Kim Ji Suk will have something narratively good to work with. But who knows if we’ll be surprised?

Showtime Begins! (Episode 9-10) - Mood: D+
Of course Cha Woong caused the death of Seul Hae’s dad because of an accident: why am I not surprised by the lame reveal that will eventually cause some drama down the road? Also, Cha Woong confronting the evil spirit himself with 0 backup is a great way to get himself possessed with all the foreshadowing? Granddaughter shaman, police chief: sigh.

Woori the Virgin (Episode 5-6) - Mood: D+
Kang Jae, you had an entire camping trip to tell Woo Ri the truth, so you only have yourself to blame when it blew up in your face. As for Ma Ri, this is already the 3rd guy attempting to blackmail her: I would have been a lot more frustrated if not for the delicious irony where she divorced Raphael while attempting not to? What hold does she have on his dad?

Love All Play (Episode 11-12) - Mood: D
I guess at the very least Tae Jun told Tae Yang the truth himself though he was beaten to it by her when it comes to his family. But they’re really pathetic, aren’t they? It’s so clear what the mom’s intentions were when she gave him the egg.

Shooting Stars: Fun, easy watch.

Showtime: I am a few weeks behind but already ff through evil spirit stuff. I'm in it for the couple and the ghost crew. PHJ plays aggrieved really well.

My Liberation Notes: The dad realizing his kids were staying at home for him when he thought he was doing his all for them. Yeah, it never made sense why the siblings weren't living together in or closer to Seoul. I have enjoyed the drama but ready for it to finish up this weekend. Also, the gal not keeping her cool and waiting until she was a permanent employee before indicating she knew who the affair gal was doesn't seem realistic to her personality or situation but I love how she figured it out.

More recent fares from drama-land has been formulaic, and not quite 'hitting me in the feels' as much. I've thus finally decided to clear a stash of 'they don't make drama like this anymore' dramas from my PTW list.

1. Aishiteru to Ittekure (1995)- For a drama starring a hearing/ vocal-impaired ML, the story was shockingly (& refreshingly so) not sappy, preachy or overly-sentimental at all. Instead, the normalcy of the entire situation is depicted so beautifully through an absolutely stunning acting performance, you forget the actor can speak & hear. Some JSL scenes move you to tears. I might have witnessed Toyokawa Etsushi's best performance to date without even knowing, thank you Drama-Gods! <3 To say I'm excited for Jung Woo Sung take up this role for the k-drama remake (as his possible comeback), is an understatement! :')
Fun fact: The clothes in Aishiteru are SO iconic, 90% of what they wear is making a comeback in 2022. Istg, BTS's Taehyung's off-duty airport looks seem like he raided the ML's closet! <3

2. Kamisama mou sukoshi dake (1998)- Probably confirms my worst suspicion: I will sit through utter trash just for the sake of my beloved Takeshi Kaneshiro! Unreasonably angtsy characters, weird stalker-fan plot, annoying teen actress who can't act for sh*t.... this one had it all. Felt like a tortured mish-mash of NANA meets Stephanie Meyer's Breaking Dawn; Cringeworthy at best.

3. Long Vacation (1996)- My 3rd Kitagawa Eriko drama, I think she might have toppled Noh-Hee Kyung in terms of writing beautifully worded, heartfelt, human stories. This one is the mother of ALL cohab, friends-to-lovers & noona-romance dramas, without *any* of those un-imaginative trope-tastic scenes, like accidental trip & kiss , walking on each other while changing clothes , etc. Heh. The ensemble setup makes it feel almost like a Japanese version of FRIENDS. They even co-habit in a Brownstone building! xD Also, Kimura Takuya stars as a loveable smol-bean here, much before he broke through the upper reaches of superstardom stratosphere!!

4. My Liberation Notes & 5. Our Blues is still my regular weekend fare, and much has been said about them already. The leads of 6. 6th sense Kiss are super-charming & very strangely but successfully selling me this cliched setup, quite well! ^^

Oh, and as I watch more projects of his, I definitely recognize a few younger stars from Taiwan, Korea, etc. who probably got a break just because somebody thought they could market them as the next 'kimura takuya'! xD

1

She cameoed in BG, it was the first drama of his I ever watched. I loved him so much in that one, that I had to watch all of his dramas. Long Vacation is still my favorite.

2

but he was sexy dangerous gorgeous in A Million Stars Falling from the Sky...

2

Kamisama mou sukoshi dake adressed themes that we can't often see in a drama like AIDS and the fact Japan had a big problem with prostitution by highschool students.

I think writers often take writing on 'sensitive yet relevant' topics as an excuse to write mediocre storylines, and don't bother with character or plot logic at all. The first-half felt annoyingly preachy, and then post time-skip, they undid every little thing they preached for.

Perhaps, it was Takeshi Kaneshiro's face that dazzled people into thinking they were watching something worthwhile. I can see why actors would NOT want to refuse such a script when offered, even when their good-sense prevails and tell them it's absolute sh*t.

OUR BLUES (Ep 13-14): These were the two best episodes of the series since they bring hope and acceptance into the story lines.

The Mi-Ran story line could have ended with the friendship termination, but Eun-hee cannot let go of people. Perhaps since she is alone, she cannot afford to lose people close to her, no matter how badly they treat her. She is just too nice of a person. At least we got the acknowledgement that she is the pillar of their community.

Young-Ok's story is sadder than we imaged but the lady divers acceptance of her and her sister was genuine. Captain Joon flashed egotistical anger and arrogance when Young-Ok tried to break up with him. He claimed to be different, but he would not listen to her experience that all her ex-boyfriends said the same thing. Joon was out of character with his emotional, forceful and clingy behavior to keep the relationship going forward.

WEDDING HELL (Ep 1-3): The story starts off in a syrupy bliss of a young couple in their 30s finally reaching the commitment stage of their relationship. Pretty textbook fairy tale so far. The start of the wedding planning after parents meeting was a little stereotypical rom-com. Then they begin to dance around the number one problem in most marital friction: money. The script has been pretty plain and the acting quite neutral. The series is only 12 half-hour episodes so we will have to see how more rom and how much com can be put into a short window. Killer’s Shopping List clocked in 8 hours of runtime but barely got all the story arcs completed. We shall see for a shorter series can stick a reasonable landing.

Red Heart The King is pretty boring... He does nothing, good or bad.

Woori the Virgin There isn't a lot of episodes, only 14, so if they focused on the main characters and not the crazy things, it would be better.

Love All Play Yoohoohoo, it's a drama about badminton!

Showtime Begins! The story is a little bit slow.

Our Blues Can I give the 4 additionnal episodes to My Liberation Notes?

Shooting Stars It's a fun drama. Now, the couple is finally interesting.

My Liberation Notes I will miss it so much! Son Suk-Ku 😍

Tomorrow I missed my styled Grim Rimpers today, but I didn't cry so it's good for my hydration!

Kiss Sixth Sense I wonder how these actors ended in this drama. I didn't really like the first 2 episodes.

SHOOTING STARS is still at the top of my list. Even though humor often had to make way for drama in the last episodes, I had to laugh heartily again several times during episode 11.

With KISS SIXTH SENSE, a new show has moved right to the top of my favorites list. I want more hot visions of bed scenes!

If Tae-joon (and Tae-yang) weren't so cute, I probably wouldn't finish watching LOVE ALL PLAY. Most of the other characters are just terrible people.

WOORI THE VIRGIN I won't continue watching for now, but will pause until the series is finished and then start a quick run-through.

As for WELCOME TO WEDDING HELL, I'm not sure yet if I'll keep watching. The first three episodes weren't really convincing.

And now I'll continue with season 4 of STRANGER THINGS.

I kept seeing comments about Legally Romance here so give it a try. It is extremely funny and I love the main couple. I have been hearing good things about it for a while but kept avoiding it because of the title (yeah I don't like seeing law, prosecutor, judge dramas), but surprisingly there is hardly any of that here. Unfortunately, I have been spoiled so I already know what I'm watching right now in the earlier episodes. Plus, more spoilers below so proceed with caution if you intend to watch it. I became impatient and skipped to the part where she wakes up and I guess the drama showed the difference between reality and dreams really well. Though, I really don't want to waste a minute into their fun bickering so I'm back to where I left.

My Liberation Notes Don't know what I will feel about the finale and penultimate episode, we'll see. Last week's episodes were tough.

Bloody Heart My Favorite. Love badass Yoo Jung and grey Park Gye Won. I just hope they give they king more wiser schemes too. Now Jung by his side, things will only get more interesting.

Finished Tomorrow, The Killer's Shopping List and Green Mother's Club this week. Liked all three, by the way. It's Beautiful Now HJ and MR pair is my favorite - they hash out their problems by talking about it immediately. Our Blues focused on friendship and sisterly love, but I loved that they cast a real person with Down Syndrome. Woori The Virgin's trajectory of breaking the couple up feels real - how could a police officer compete with the chaebol? Shooting Stars make my week! Just started with From Now On, It's Showtime! and I love the hijinks these ghosts will get into to help our couple!

From Now, Showtime!: 8.0

Tomorrow: 6.5 Ending was environmentally friendly. BTW, since they had so many severed threads in this show, perhaps someone should have invested in some higher quality unbreakable thread for the bonds between people, instead of saving the good stuff only for the bonds of fate for the leads. #nylon #kevlar?

Again My Life: 6.6 Now we know why director Han opposed the baddie, and why the baddie trust her, now all we need from the finale is to find out how she becomes a Reaper.

Shooting Stars: 6.5 Many of the supporting cast deserve a better main show. But not the demented rich housekeeper.

Red Heart: 6.0 While others praise the acting and cinematography, I find it a dull series of conversations, punctuated only when Jang Hyuk makes one of his abrupt transitions from calmly menacing to shouty.

Love All Play: 4.5 💤 Separation? Idiocy? 🥱

How sad is it that the best "kdrama" I saw this week was in John Oliver's Subway episode?

Doctor Who: 10.0 Re-watched a few favorites from seasons 5/7 (with Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Jenna Coleman)

IMO Matt Smith's first season is one of the best nuWho seasons in terms of consistency. The episode that got a lot of attention at the time was Richard Curtis' Vincent and the Doctor, but the one I love the most is Simon Nye's Amy Choice, with the incomparable Toby Jones playing a kind of dark Doctor that is far more sinister than the Master.

A very satisfying watch from Bloody Heart.

My Liberation Notes – If Our Blues made me pause and let some tears through ep 7-8, MLN pulled its own gut punch. Cutting Mama Yeom’s life off just when her workloads reduced is really really unfair. This dose of reality doesn’t sit well, MLN. It's an unfair reminder of Life.
I’m definitely not ready to say goodbye to this great wonderful piece of art, and it’s close to real-life stories, characters and characterizations.

Our Blues - This time last week I really wanted Eun-hee and Mi-ran to break up their friendship. This week, I ate my words myself.
As per Jung-jun and Yeong-ok, it’s arrogant of him to say he’ll stay no matter what. Instead of an assurance that she has heard over and over which has broken her over and over, a work in progress response would have fared better. He has his family to walk through, and it’s like they are no easy piece to convince on matters like this. What if they opposed? Would he make Yeong-ok his choice then? It was really arrogant of him to make such a promise that doesn’t recognize the difficulty of the situation from Yeong-ok’s point of view.
At least I still have this one running. Saying goodbye to Our Blues and MLN would have been so hard. I certainly do not regret picking this up almost mid-run.

Kiss Sixth Sense - Where is Kim Ji-suk? I really thought he’d show up in the premiere episodes.
This one is a total disaster work project for Ye-sool.

It’s Beautiful Now Ep 3 - I’m really enjoying this one. I really hope my strength pushes me to finish this to the end despite anything. The older brother and his pair are one adorable set of romantic pair. His naivety and dumbness to matters of the womenfolk ,if true is…laughable.

Green Mothers Club - Eun-pyo is really full of herself and too dismissive of her husband.
GMC is a mess, not in a good way or a bad one. I don’t know what it was trying to be and it became its undoing. Everything was all over the place. Nice plot devices and storylines, but displaced puzzled pieces. They didn’t fit together we’ll. A lack of cohesion. This would have been another SKY Castle thematic piece but it threw it all away for the murder plot, which also blew up into a beautiful mess.
Had Chun-hui remained the bad guy, it would have been better though I would scream for a redemption arc for her. But making the husband a bad guy, without a properly grounded backstory plus follow-up of baddieness, it all fell flat.
When Chu Ja-hyun picked this up I thought it would be worth the script, and time. But it was just not it. This goes into the drama I finished despite hating it as it progressed.

Red Heart: I haven't the faintest idea what will happen next week but I do know the King messed up. Sir, stop being so emotional and start thinking.

Woori The Virgin: HUZZZAH, they broke up, so the good stuff can start.

Welcome to Wedding Hell: It was so boring. How can you make 30 min episodes feel so very very long. Dropped.

Kiss Sixth Sense: I was WRONG, happily. They gave us 2 episodes. I liked it, there is chemistry, and it is a fun premise.

Love at Play:😭😭😭😭, I dislike his mother so much. He didn't deserve that slap. They broke the cutest couple up and for what.

Sh**ting Stars: Poor Tae Sung. He has all my sympathies. This is the first time I am seeing a ML passing out. So yeah for gender flipping.

My Liberation Notes: Personally if the guy I was dating disappeared for two years and then randomly showed up again, I'd kick him in the shins rather than greet him with a smile, but maybe that's just me? Never really been a fan of the "men get to behave like dipshits and disappear for years to find themselves and women should just be grateful that they occasionally return" trope.

I actually had a guy do that to me, sorta. We dated briefly when I was 18 and just graduated high school, then he vanished and I didn't see or hear from him for several months. Then he shows up at my door without any notice one day, acting like he'd never been gone. Needless to say we did NOT pick up where we'd left off.

That trope is so ridiculous! It is one thing to take a break if you are moving to another country or mutually decided to end things. Even then you can't just walk back into the relationship as if its just a matter of pressing play.

Me 3.

I dont support any of the OTPs in MLN. They’re not swoony at all to me.

I continue to watch due to interesting arc of Lee Min Ki and Lee El. Mr. Gu occasionally too but he ceased to be interesting in the last few episodes. I don’t like Mi Gyeong as a character though no fault of Kim Ji Won, her acting is on point.

Overall, My Ahjussi was so much better but MLN is still watchable.

I'm not really a fan of shows where characters make self-destructive choices over and over again, and this show has a whole lot of that.

MY LIBERATION NOTES: Not one wasted minute in these two very emotionally raw and poetic episodes. Loved how ep 13 opened with a tight shot on Gu's miserable face, and 14 opened with a tight shot on MJ's equally sad one. I can't believe how much Chang-hee has grown on me, and I didn't mind the older sister asking to be a mom to her boyfriend's daughter. I think she sincerely does want to be close to that girl, and she is not making it easy at all. So why not simply ask "can I be your mom, please?" Also loved the flirty tone of Gu and MJ's reunion. It's clear that these two are happier together than apart, so I think they'll figure out a way to function as a unit. I will miss this show very much.

LOVE ALL PLAY: Romantic melos are my jam, so I can't and won't fault the show for being too angsty, but these two episodes were a bit of a slog. The FL is an excellent actress, and Taeyang's chronic sadness and self-hatred have been well documented by the writing, but her disregard for Taejoon's emotional needs is hard to watch. I hate Taejoon's mother. And I want Junghwan to have to work more for Yumi's affection.

RED HEART: Wonderful to see the FL drive the action and be smarter than the two men, but it's time for the King to get out of the corner he has been written into.

SHOOTING STARS: This couple is more adorable together than I anticipated, and I love all the ancillary couples, too. Not sure yet who I'm rooting for in the love triangle with the manager in love with her sunbae and oblivious to the star-in-training heavily crushing on her.

SHOWTIME BEGINS: Couldn't focus on this one this week so am behind. I still enjoy it, but don't feel an urgent need to watch.

Multiple couples - all with the most adorable chemistry. In ep 11, they never showed the Baek Ji Soo, but I just know from Lawyer Do's brother's reaction, they are adorable too. Even Eun Si Woo and StarForce CEO have cute chemistry, even though I don't think they will ever date.

Then you have the various bro-pairings with Taesung. They're all adorable.

I am pleased to see some others share my enthusiasm for Sh**ting Stars. I am surprised at just how much I am enjoying this show. Early on, I was mainly watching it for its funny cameos and industry jokes, but the couples have really won me over. I especially liked Tae Sung's transition. The idea that the "nation's boyfriend" (itself pretty funny phrase) is not a player, but insecure and deeply in love with one woman is very appealing. It changes the usual "male arrogance softens because of love" narrative in a good way, although of course there had to be a Mom-traum in there.

I don't necessarily have high expectations for the next 6 episodes--but I look forward to them more than any other show I'm watching, including Liberation Notes, which I admire, but am watching because its so well done, not because I love the story.

However, there is one BIG negative issue I'm having with Sh**ting Stars -- that song "My Secret, My Everything" is one of the worst ear worms I've encountered in a Kdrama OST! Its a pleasant song--Vincent Blue has a great voice, and he and Sondia harmonize well together--but its constantly stuck in my head. Any tips to scrub it from my temporal lobe?

I loved that OST 'My Secret, My Everything' from the first time it played. The lyrics also perfectly fits the characters and their story.

I am so surprised that I like Hanbyul and Taesong together. When I started the drama I just hoped that the ML isn't a completely asshole and the FL isn't besotted with him. I am loving how the moment he realized his feelings for Hanbyul he just went for it and isn't afraid to show his vulnerable side to her. I am also enjoying the scenes with reporter and lawyer, they have better chemistry than him and Hanbyul.

I’m really really liking this one. I started it because I wanted to watch some fluff, but I ended up liking or loving this one so much. Now I’ve come to a realization why I so like it: it’s a non-toxic fluff, meaning that I can just enjoy it without waiting for something in the story to blow up or dealt with inappropriately or something triggering. Its such a good-feeling great show that I eagerly wait for more every week.

OUR BLUES really impressed me with the way it handled the Downs syndrome twin story. I admired the honesty of the captain when he said that he has never learned or been taught how he should behave towards disabled people and has never met one before. His heart is in the right place and he seems to be a fast learner, too.

Bracing myself for the final episodes of LIBERATION NOTES.

LOVE ALL PLAY is developing as expected, not many surprises here. I will never get used to parents slapping their grown up children in Korean dramas - and the children somehow putting up with it. This is so common in the dramas that I fear that it is not frowned upon by their audience. As much as I like the lead actors, I might not tune in next week because of this.

As in so many sageuk, the main drama revolves around which woman the king is going to sleep with and the interested parties using the powers of a shaman to make sure it is a boy. RED HEART is no different. Much more enjoyable are the power games between Kang Han-na and Jang Hyuk.

WOORI and SHOOTING STARS are good entertainment and thankfully not too serious.

I struggle with the slapping as well. I know many countries still find it perfectly acceptable to spank or slap even their adult children, but it's very difficult for me to watch as a parent. And in this case, the mom's violent anger is impossible for me to justify. I can imagine having a hard time being nice to someone who I felt accidentally caused the end of my child's athletic career--but slapping my other child for dating him/her and feeling completely justified in doing so--would be egregiously wrong. She needed to step back and have a quiet conversation with her son in private and accept his own decisions as an adult man.

Frankly, even the scene where Taeyang's father attempts to apologize to the parents made me mad. We're talking about the actions of adult children, number one. Second, why would the father apologize to the parents anyway? It just feels like a socially sanctioned way to take out your frustration and anger on a person rather than trying to heal and move on.

I understand and have no problem with parents demanding respect from their children, but they need to show respect, too, and also accept that children may choose a different path in life than the one planned by the parents. The mother is clearly living her life through the success of her children - this will inevitably lead to frustrations. Violence is not the answer. What annoys me most is that the children do not show these parents the red card!

Hello.....

I think I've missed posting my comments in WWW threads in the last few months, but here I am.

Finished:
1. The Sound of Music: This left very bitter taste in my mouth. I was sticking with it because I liked the first episode, but then the show got creepier little by little, and at the end there was absolutely nothing that I liked about it. This is the second time I ended up hating the show I watched so much that warrants the word "hate". The Sound of Music dealt with the subjects of mental illnesses, negligent parents, bad teachers, bad parents, among others very badly. The show did not even try to solve these problems logically and efficiently, but introduced magic as an escape and the supposed "solution" to all the mentioned problems. I did not understand anything at the end, and that is what I called the worst of it all. I hate this one with the heat of 999 suns.

Currently watching:
1. Sh**ting Stars: Now this is absolutely the opposite of the above show. This is the show that I love so much at the moment. It has old-school vibe to it, and it doesn't force itself to be something that it isn't. It doesn't try too hard to impress its viewers, and perhaps this is something that I think has been missing in recent Kdramas. Plus, it has so MANY good-looking men and SO MANY actors and actresses cameoing. This is superb. I'm a very happy Bean.

I know some people said TY shouldn’t feel all guilty about the incident, maybe she shouldn’t. But, if TY move forward saying it’s not her fault, it was JY choice, I take no responsibility on it, it will make her a less decent human being. Tricky, huh?

Not watching much at the moment because life is so busy, but I'm keeping my eyes on a WtV and KSS to see how they go before I invest my time in downloading and watching them. The only drama I'm currently watching is the Cdrama You Are My Hero. I originally thought it was a DoTS remake but while it has the same vibe at times, it's definitely its own show and I like it a lot. I really like the main and secondary couples.

Liberation Notes ep13 - I was about to doze off (too much introspection at this late stage, even Mr Gu seems to be half sleep walking and ceased to be interesting) then Lee Min Ki’s great acting moment woke me up. LMK is not my favorite but I have great respect on his acting chops.

Red Heart - Kang Hana is badass, you go girl! I sympathise with Lee Joon’s deep longing but he needs to step up his scheming. Jang Hyuk -sadly -is in turns underacting then overacting. Where is the brilliant Chuno and Money Flower actor?

All in all - a lacklustre set of current airing series.

From Now On, Showtime! (up to ep 10): My happy pill even though there is serial-killing entity going about. The bowling scene had me in tears from laughter. Just lots of funny and bonding that makes me feel warm inside. I was a little disappointed that they didn't have a ghost-of-the-week.

Sh**ting Stars (up to ep 11): The creepy anti-fan stuff is sort of a drag, but the drama is still feeding me a lot of fun "a look at the entertainment business" and cute/potential couples. It was fun seeing Jin Ki-joo do a cameo.

Legally Romance (c-drama, finished) I enjoyed the coma-dream more than the modern day reality, but it was overall a sweet drama. The last 2 episodes were too overdramatic and ridiculous, but I love the wedding and the post-credits scene!

Master of Her Own (cdrama, finished) Wrapped up nicely and I love how the FL stayed the center of the drama. Tan Song-yun kills it whether she is playing a meek secretary or taking down foes like a boss. The ML (who is more like a supporting character to the FL) - his improvement was well-done, though I disliked how the last episodes tried to whitewash his earlier truly POS behavior.

Again My Life: I wish the show was more ambitious and creative. There was so much potential here and it was mostly squandered. Hopefully, Lee Joon-gi’s next project is better.

Bloody Heart: Yoo Jung is fast becoming one of my favourite female sageuk characters ever. Perhaps even outside the sageuk genre. This is a masterclass in every aspect.

It’s Beautiful Now: Yoon Shi-yoon has the most inconsistent hair in dramaland history. It’s absolutely hilarious.

Kiss Sixth Sense: It’s giving webdrama starring C-tier idols, but the production values and weirdly high-profile actors make up for it. Self-serious, but Seo Ji-hye is hot so I don’t care. I liked it.

Love All Play: Tae-joon’s family is awful. He’s a sweetheart who deserves the world and this is how they treat him. I hope we get back to the cuteness soon.

My Liberation Notes: Not ready to let go. I refuse to believe it’s the last week. Best show of 2022 for me. An uncontroversial, unchallengeable opinion so far.

Our Blues: Getting through it, one episode at a time. Very slowly. The acting is fantastic all-around, but I’m still having difficulties fully connecting to most characters.

Shooting Stars: I understand that dangerous sasaeng fans and anti-fans exist, but I did not care much for that storyline. I much rather prefer the sweet relationship stuff and behind-the-scenes look into PR work.

Showtime Begins!: I’m still enjoying this immensely. There is just so much fun to be had from most of the show. Jin Ki-joo is a treasure.

The Sound of Magic: I’m not binging this because I have no time. Neither is it engrossing enough to finish in one spot. Ji Chang-wook is still kinda creepy, but I love Choi Sung-eun and Hwang In-yeop here (I Mean It is on constant replay!).

Who Rules the World: I wish the storylines were as equal for our leads as the leads are in their power and standing.

Woori the Virgin: Raphael is easily the best character in the show. Which works perfectly for me as a closet, guilty-pleasure Sung Hoon fan. But I wish the other characters were just as fun because I find them okay at best, or obnoxious at worst.

Tomorrow: Shout out to the stylists and hair-and-makeup specialists. They truly gave it their all for the show. No shout out to the writer, who squandered every chance to make this show into a memorable, thoughtful story and instead stumbled into mediocrity with their every choice. At least they managed to make me stay through the sheer power of Kim Hee-sun and Lee Soo-hyuk’s hotness so that’s…something I guess. Maybe the casting directors will finally take mercy on my poor soul and cast him as the ML in the sageuk and/or romcom he so deserves. I will remember this exclusively for Lee Soo-hyuk in a vest. Truly a top five drama about guys in vests.

SHOOTING STARS- we are really loving this show. However, the insane housekeeper was stupid, although I understand that it does reflect an actual social problem with superfans in the ROK- but I still was not a good fit for the show.

We are also continuing to love WOORI THE VIRGIN. The story has moved along with just enough craziness to make it delightful.

But Netflix really blew it with WELCOME TO WEDDING HELL. It is a big company, so mistakes are going to be made, not that this same truth excuses the Disney Company’s irrational regional limitations on K-dramas. I will probably be looking into whether I can make Roku work with a VPN- is it possible without messing up my other connections?

We have also really enjoyed- as in being captivated by- by OUR BLUES. It has been an exceptional show.

My wife has been watching AGAIN MY LIFE not on a weekly basis but in batches- she waits until multiple episodes are available and then watches several together. Call it semi-bingeing. But she has really liked the show.

She has also watched THE KILLER’S SHOPPING LIST. And for something lighter she watched SPLISH SPLASH LOVE, which is fun. And for non-K or C drama watching she saw and loved the new and longer version of AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, starring David Tennant, which she thought was fantastic plus the fifth season of OUTLANDER, a show she really loves. She also found a J-drama which she finds incredibly insightful: DON’T CALL IT MYSTERY.

Thanks to the recent “Name Your Top Ten K-dramas” I took to watching the daily drama BRILLIANT HERITAGE. Most dailies leave me cold but this one is really good. But it has gotten in the way of watching some other shows.

Until now the weekender IT'S BEAUTIFUL NOW has really been a triple romcom but that just changed at the end of the most recent episode as our youngest future Sister-in-law, while trying on a wedding dress before the mother of our three brothers was so overwhelmed with guilt that she spilled the beans about the youngest brother’s plans for a fake marriage. So this weekend we get to watch as the cow byproduct hits the rotating blade- and it was about time for this show to fully engage the family in a crisis. It is what a weekender is all about after all: Family issues, angst and, when done well, poignant resolutions to those problems. Meanwhile our oldest brother and his lady lawyer are starting to become a real, couple (but what will happen when he finds out that she is the one whose lie kept him off the dating show?). Middle brother is really already there with his beautiful divorcee, with the tension heightened by a little jealousy- which can sometimes be useful in moving things forward.

For most shows I refuse to do this- even the ones Disney+ has locked away from the North American audience. I do find that eventually some of those dramas do became available somewhere. A good example of that is HOGU'S LOVE, not officially available to me for years but now I can stream it on my Roku stick (or my Firestick) thanks to, I kid you not, Amazon Prime.

I've been enjoying everyone's comments on My Liberation Dairy/ MLN, both on the weecap and the WWW every week, so I didn't make any of my own.
But just now, I've finished watching ep 15 of MLN and I'm a mess, blisfull mess i guess. I know that there's an ep left, the finale, but I want to say that it has different trajectory with what I felt about My Ajusshi (MA).
with MA, the ep 1-4 was the hardest, bleak, but starting ep 5 it was just sublime, right to the final ep.
with MLN, to me, the first 4 ep was sublime, then it started to become more 'ordinary', didn't give some punched hole but still really good show until the teen ep, and then ep 13-14 picked up with the death, family in grief and family in amend. I wasn't won over for the lover's reunion of ep 14 (felt disjointed with the week's eps tone) but this ep 15 just hit me on all the right spots, and now I'm back to eagerly anticipate the final ep to bid farewell to the story that already felt like a celebration of feeling good to be alive, feeling good to be living day by day with no fanfare, and just being a hero in our own story in life.
as Park Dong Hoon said in the farewell to Lee Ji An: just let's be happy!

My Ajusshi was very much a Buddhist show. MLN is more of a Christian show, you could say, so comes up with different kinds of life lessons at the end. One thing both have in common is the horrifying level of alcohol consumption portrayed, and not in a cute K-drama 'Give the girl a piggly-back ride kind'a way.

I have not watched more than a few minutes of either show so can’t comment on the different perspectives they represent I may try to get into them again just to see.
I have been increasingly concerned about the alcohol consumption and the easy fix medication and hangover soup with less emphasis on the long term effects physically, mentally or financially. I noticed in Once Again they showed alcohol induced dementia caused by daily drinking and from what I have seen of My Liberation Notes it was a feature with Mr Gu. The majority of the dramas I have seen either make it seem cute or occasionally it’s a key feature in domestic violence or sexual harassment.

I find the whole alcohol consumption too much in most k-shows. And the whole idea of women consuming enough alcohol to black out (and in a lot of east Asian dramas think they slept with someone or sometimes do sleep with someone) and not remembering what happened is alarming.

And this is shown as a romantic trope where the couple meet. In reality, this is super dubious consent and happens to a lot of women (and to some men) and it is a crime.

And the whole people forcing others (including women) to drink is considered very bad manner in my country of origin as well as where I live now.

Agreed on all the above. The quick check of clothes to determine if something has happened is so bad.

I saw somewhere that the forcing of alcohol in work meal settings is no longer seen as acceptable so people can refuse without feeling it will have a consequence for their work lives.

It was a shock for me when I saw my first few K-Dramas that it was a norm to force people (men/women alike) to drink.

I guess it is not as acceptable as it was earlier but it seems still a lot of middle aged people and elderly seem to think it is okay if they are forcing others to drink.

Showtime Now: I haven't watched this week's episodes but so far this drama is something I turn on to without paying much attention. I like the comedy aspect with the ghosts but I am not really into the romance.

Shooting Stars: I had hoped that the whole thing with the anti-fan would be resolved by 12th episode and the next episodes will be about their romance being revealed. But it seems that we may see a noble idiocy breakup next week. I hope that OHB and GTS stay together and are not forced to breakup just to unite at end of last episode. I did enjoy the camping scene where GTS reassured OHB and told her how important she is to her. Actually, I am enjoying the straight forward honesty in this relationship. Its really refreshing.

Scholar Who Walks the Night: I have to admit I am watching this for more Lee Soohyuk after Tomorrow ended. Lee Joonki was a bonus point. 2 minutes into the first episode and LSK is already seducing/drinking blood out of royal concubines while looking absolutely sexy. I thought I had moved on form my vampire phase but I guess I am not. Oh, and he has also choked three people by the end of the episodes. All the while LJK is doing everything to make this campy show more serious than it is.

Tomorrow (16): I just have complain about how the makers underutilized the potential of LSH. It is a decent watch and will definitely recommend it for watching.

Shooting stars (11-12): I loved the budding relationship between Lawyer and the Journalist. Good to see him getting his own bit other than being a rejected second lead. Manager Yu sung is good too. He was sincere in his work and I appreciate the way he handled the whole Ho young situation. I do feel like this ship might finally sail in the next week. I guessed the “terminal disease trope” coming up while watching ep 11. That’s one of the things that pissed me off a little bit in this week’s episode. GTS can’t get a break right!!! Week after week the poor guy is suffering. Its scary how the media publishes story lines just to feed the gossip. But thankfully he has a lot of good people by his side and I hope the next week to be a little less heavy.
PS: The journalist friend is totally badass. I loved how she handled the whole child situation. It takes a lot of guts to stand up to your boss like that.

My liberation notes (1-14): Yet to watch this week’s episodes. I am not much of a fan of this genre but strangely I couldn’t stop watching the series. It is an intelligent take on introverts and their difficulties in blending with people who often misunderstand them. The relationship between the siblings is portrayed so well. They are not particularly close and hardly share things but the writer showed how they cared about each other with little example sequences (Chang hee going for a rescue mission to save his sister from embarrassment and Mi jieong crying when she sees her sister in pain). I felt I was a part of the narrative and the director had brilliantly portrayed the lives of a typical middle-class family. I enjoyed the sequences between Gu and MJ (Also the rare moments when he manages to smile). I wasn’t expecting the tragedy to hit in the form of a death. Eager to see how they will tie all the ends and I wish our siblings find their peace ands happiness in the end.

Our Blues (1-14): I watched first two episodes and the story wasn’t intriguing enough to continue watching. I ended up reading the dramabean open thread and find the writeups more interesting.

Currently Watching: When you be me (Cdrama) : The only problem I have with this drama is the subtitle. Very bad. You can barely understand what they are saying but it is fun to watch.

The remake of I am not a robot. Fun watching it. The ML behaves like a baby. One time he is serious, the other time he is joking.

KDrama
Love All Play. One can see clearly that Taeyang blames herself for everything and the guilt is really eating her up. The painful part is, she not seeing that her actions were hurting Taejoon who cares so much for her. Her guilt and lack of love and care from her childhood made it difficult for her to see J
Taejoon.

Shooting Star: a lot of people fail to realize that celebrities are also human. They can get hurt. Our managernim had so many opportunities to let Gong TS that his mum came back but he failed.

Anime: Jijutsu Raisen. I enjoyed this anime. Waiting for Season 2.

There was a very good dialogue between TS and another person I can't remember who about why he had to tell the public every single thing about himself that he does not want to disclose. I love watching this show because it shows me how working in the media is like, and how human celebrities are.

Showtime Begins Cha Woong and Seul Hae were cute as always as they navigate their newfound feelings. They both got to pretend stakeout and  home date as the evil spirit lurks. Advisor Choi takes a hit and had to recuperate. I quite like this show a bit more than SS. Maybe because i find the leads more cute together.
My Liberation Notes last weekend's episodes were heartwrenching as the family dealt with their loss. It was sudden and the catalyst for the Yeom family to start reevaluating their lives and correcting past mistakes. I really felt for the siblings as they each stepped up to take care of the family.
Again My Life i found myself skipping through the episodes just to get to through it. I just want to know what happens next. The ending was lacklustre.
Shooting Stars i still watch this show mostly for certain characters and the continued peek behind the scenes of the entertainment industry. I really liked Lee Sang Yeob's cameo
Queendom2 I am not really a fan of any of the contestants before watching this show. But as I watch each episode, I enjoy watching each groups preparation for their performances. My fave has to be the episodes when they formed Dance and Vocal units. But now that we are on the final round, I find myself rooting for Brave Girls. I am a sucker for Brave Girls' underdog story.
Bloody Heart this is on pause until I can have more time to watch it (meaning once the other weekend show end) and when I find the mood for it.

Work was a total killer this week so I sidelined all my current dramas in favor of re-watching You Are My Glory and Scripting Your Destiny. I can function again. This time around I wasn't distraught over the ending of the latter. Perhaps I was too infused with the bubbly bliss of the former or maybe it was because this time around the clock hadn't passed 2 am, but I came out with a more positive outlook on the ending.

Again My Life
So, we watched the final episodes together on our vacation at Lake Garda, which is why I’m late posting this. We were both a little disappointed… even ep. 15 didn’t clear anything up, and in the final episode, a TV discussion and an unannounced interview with Hui Ah were the end of Tae Sub? We had expected a much more dramatic development. The grim reaper sending him back to live his live again wasn’t explained at all, and the romance just being “we saw each other more often, and now we are dating??” At least show some glances or physical closeness in the episodes before, PD-nim! So, we enjoyed the show all in all, but the final was a letdown. If this is leading up to a season two, I’m not sure I would want to watch that.
Tomorrow
The other show I’m watching with my friend. Since we were one week behind on Netflix Europe, we also finished this on our vacation. Loved this finale, loved the devil that is hot, very powerful, but not so smart 😉, loved the conclusion!
Our Blues
Missed out on this week’s episodes…
Shooting Stars
Also not watched this week, sat at the lakefront instead!
Love All Play
Only saw ep. 11. With the same reasoning as Jun Young’s, Jung Hwan could now blame it all on her: she was the reason that he punched his teammate and so it’s her fault that he got expelled from the national team and now his career and his life are ruined. I’m waiting for a lot of character development on Jun Young. Our couple is still great together, I love exuberant Tae Joon and the way Tae Yang accepted his confession of being Jun Young’s brother.
My Liberation Notes
Since I started late, I bingewatched up to Ep. 14 in two days and loved it. There were so many insightful comments on Dramabeans that I don’t have much else to say. Such a good drama, wonderful actors, great director. I will have to add this to my 10 Kdramas that stayed with me, because it surely will. Looking forward to watching the final episodes tonight!
Kiss Sixth Sense
Tried out the first two episodes because my friend loved the setup, but we both were not really convinced to like it… Maybe I’ll check out the next two episodes to make up my mind.
Extraordinary You
Started this for something light and fun to watch with my friend, and we both love it so far!

Welcome to Wedding Hell - eek, the first 10 min were both boring and lacking chemistry

Our Blues (Ep1) - bit hard to keep track of all the characters. His poor toe! How was there no first aid kit?

Sh**ting Stars - having a hard time not thinking of the problem as ridiculous and the over-exaggerated online response doesn't help. Missing shenanigans.
But is Mr. Organic Bar maybe suspicious?

Love All Play - continuing to hate their parents... want some karma to happen!

Kiss Sixth Sense - that was too much caffeine. Don't those energy drinks say not to drink more than 2 a day? Not at least 3 and a 5-shot espresso with PILLS. Was almost expecting her to have a g-dd-mn heart attack.

The Killer's Shopping List - omg, I was so worried for Fish! Split second there thought they would fridge her and was so relieved that wasn't the case.
For a show about a serial killer, it was oddly heartwarming. His mom still is the best.

If you are a fan of SK, you might want to check out Nevillera and Nevthertheless. The latter is all about dysfunctional relationships, so you have been informed.
