Premiere Watch: Link – Eat Love Kill; Insider; Yumi’s Cells 2

The June barrage of drama premieres continues this week, and we have three new shows. First, the emotional linkage romance with Yeo Jin-gu and Moon Ga-young that, if nothing else, will be a great pairing. Next, a thriller featuring another great pairing: Kang Haneul and Lee Yoo-young. And last but not least, Yumi’s Cells is back for season 2! And that screeching sound you hear is just me, gearing myself up for more great writing.

Link: Eat, Love, Kill

Time slot: Monday-Tuesday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Romance, fantasy, mystery, drama
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: I love the idea of this pairing, and the premise of a mysterious emotional link seems as good as any for cute K-drama hijinks, appropriate tragic backstory, and the like. I have no doubt that our leads will bring the story to life — but the script is where the rubber meets the road, and our writer here has Suspicious Partner and I Remember You on their resume. Though not perfect, I’m okay with both of those as frames of reference, and with chef Yeo Jin-gu thrown into the mix, I’m hoping this is a lot of fun.

Insider

Time slot: Wednesday-Thursday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Action, thriller, drama
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Kang Haneul is back in dramaland as a judicial trainee whose undercover mission goes terribly awry and lands him in prison. That logline is enough to pull me in, for sure, because there’s nothing quite like a hero who’s been wronged and has to somehow turn the tables. Also starring are Lee Yoo-young, Heo Sung-tae, and Kim Sang-ho, among the other talent, and I have a feeling we’ll have a dark and gritty tale ahead.

Yumi’s Cells 2

Time slot: Fridays
Broadcaster: TVING
Genre: Romance, slice-of-life
Episode count: 14

Reasons to watch: I will just about deny the need for any K-drama to have multiple seasons, but there are a few exceptions, and Yumi’s Cells is one of them. First, because it fits the form of the source material, and second, because I loved the first season so very much, I’m ready and waiting for more. Somehow, Yumi’s Cells managed to take a concept that sounded juvenile and turn it into a lovely layer of metaphor, and I’m expecting more of the same from season 2. (The only question mark here is why in the world tvN doesn’t want to broadcast it directly instead of streaming.)

I'm hoping for good things from the Link and Insider. Yumi didn't do anything for me season 1, so I'll skip season 2.

@magajesj: Disney is evil and it has made me act hypocritically as it is the only legal way I get to watch some dramas. But, down with The Mouse’s (near) omnipotence anyway.

Oh thanks!! I was wondering about Insider!! So glad it's on Viki, since I was planning to try it!!

Now if only D+ would stop buying dramas just to stream them to only a handful of countries that would be much appreciated :)

Ahh, at least 2 of them are on Viki....WHY IS LINK ON DISNEY+???? I HATE IT. Cuz we don't get to watch it in the US :(

Ugh, I used to hate Netflix for stealing all the dramas but now I hate Disney for taking them to then only stream them in certain countries. :(

Adding Link and Insider to my list~~ I had no idea June would be so packed.

Feels like I haven't seen Kang Haneul in a lead/main role in a while.

I’m looking forward to all three. *Sigh* My “what I’m watching” roster is about to be a mess.

I'm still trying to decide on whether I should live-watch any the 3 dramas which premiered last week and now these 3 too😩.

I'll definitely tune in for Yumi's Cells 2. I really liked the first season but didn't care for Jinyoung's character, which dims my excitement for season 2 somewhat.

It seems like there is very little buzz for Insider. It's a little curious that Jtbc did not hype it more, but I'm hoping for the best. I really like both Kang Haneul and Lee Yoo-young.

I'll wait and see the feedback on Link. The premise doesn't really grab me and Disney+ getting it means more work to watch.

For some reason since INSIDER came on my radar it has reminded me of another prison drama tvN’s CROSS (2018) where Go Kyung-po went dark. It was GKP’s drama following his terrific performances in CHICAGO TYPEWRITER (2017) and STRONGEST DELIVERYMAN (2017). Choosing to play the character he played in CROSS might have been gutsy but I thought it was a mistake. Then the production was jinxed by an off set scandal by another ML. Interestingly it wound up with a 3.9% average rating.
Lol when am I going with this? Not sure. My gut tells me that playing this character might not be a good idea for Kang Ha-neul who I thoroughly enjoyed in MISAENG, CAMELLIA and RIVER.

Also, I wish I could watch Yeo Jin-goo in LINK but residing in the US the mouse has decided I won’t have access.
Nevertheless my viewing card will be filling up quickly and without availability angst. I will be getting my sageuk fix with a watch of the oldie TALE OF ARANG (Viki) and upcoming KBS’s JINXED AT FIRST (Viki), tvN’s ALCHEMY OF SOULS (Netflix) and KBS and SIG’s CAFE MINAMDANG (Netflix).

I will try the 3 of them!

Link : I like the actors and the story looks fun.

Insider : I was very happy when KHN got his first role, but I dropped Camelia... So I hope this one is the one!

Yumi's Cells 2 : I really like the principle behind this drama : the cells, the fact it's not about one love story but about Yumi's life, the humor, etc. I'm not a big fan of Jin-Young but I'm curious about his cells in this season.

I'll probably just watch the first 2 episodes of each and let the story decide if I will continue watching
