Shaman Seo In-gook serves coffee and justice in Cafe Minamdang

We’ve been treated to a steady stream of stills from KBS for the upcoming Cafe Minamdang, which features our ragtag team of heroes: Seo In-gook (Doom at Your Service), Oh Yeon-seo (Mad for Each Other), Kwak Shi-yang (IDOL: The Coup), Kwon Soo-hyun (Crime Puzzle), and Kang Mina (Moonshine).

The comedy-mystery stars Seo In-gook as the once criminal profiler Nam Han-joon. On the surface, he changed his career path completely by becoming a shaman and opening up a coffee shop that offers fortune telling services. But his end goal remains the same. He and his team are always striving to help their customers, fulfilling their requests to right wrongs, and fighting for justice in their own creative ways.

Oh Yeon-seo plays detective Han Jae-hee, who came to know Seo In-gook through a mysterious incident two years back, and the two have been bickering since. Passionate and stubborn, once she takes on a case, she needs to see it through to the end — whatever it takes.

Meanwhile, Kwak Shi-yang’s character, Gong Su-cheol, is pulling double duty. Out of loyalty to Seo In-gook, he works as a barista at Seo’s cafe during the day. But at night, he goes back to his detective job, where he works with Oh Yeon-seo in the violent crimes unit.

Kwon Soo-hyun, on the other hand, is the principled prosecutor Cha Do-won. It’s unclear if he’s friend or foe, since his smiles are described as friendly but chilling. However, we’re told that he somehow gets involved with the Minamdang crew and that he has a crush on one of the characters.

Last but not least, Kang Mina takes on the role of hacker Nam Hye-joon, Seo In-gook’s younger sister. She used to work for the NIS, but quit on a whim, wanting to become a professional gamer instead. She then starts helping Seo with his cafe and eventually becomes part of the Minamdang team.

Written by Park Hye-jin (Ruler – Master of the Mask) and directed by PD Go Jae-hyun (Will You Have Dinner With Me), Cafe Minamdang is currently set to premiere June 27, following Red Heart in the Monday-Tuesday slot, and will be available internationally on Netflix. However, in light of recent production disputes, the debut may be delayed.

I hate SIG's hair. It's been a long time since I've a SIG drama but hopefully this turns out okay. The plot doesn't exactly thrill me.

The hair is so bad! I really hope this is good too, because it really has been ages since I’ve liked a SIG drama. I guess it was Shopping King Louis!

I at least hope this one is fun!

A SQUAD 38 ensemble type spin-off with SIG. On Netflix with no availability angst. I am there. This will be great. Maybe the person responsible for NGM’s hair in THE VEIL is responsible for SIG’s hair here. That’s ok.

Taking a look down the cast it looks like Kwak Shi-yang will finally be coming out of the my dog house that he entered for his role in CHICAGO TYPEWRITER (my only KSY drama). Kang Mina was terrific in MOONSHINE and should be great as SIG’s sis. Then there is also character actor Jung Man-sik who oftentimes plays a heavy.

“… Written by Park Hye-jin (Ruler – Master of the Mask).”

Literal nightmare-inducing. I need this to be my man Ziggy’s triumphant comeback post-Doom at Your Service and holy sh*t that does not make me happy. The actors could be perfect, but it will not make up for a mediocre script. So I am begging the writer to not hurt me.

But in better news, hurray Kwak Shi-yang for finally beating the endless typecasting. He’s way too good to not one day be a leading man in his own right. I also hope Kwon Soo-hyun’s character doesn’t start some silly love triangle. But idk who else he can have a crush on. Kang Mina is way too young. Unless… they make him queer. Ok now that’s my headcanon and they better make it happen.

Netflix distribution means guaranteed english subs. Quality aside, the easy accessibility is welcome. My undying love for SIG will never be defeated.

@ladynightshade: /Em’s ran to google Kwak Shiyang!/.
Oh. Now I know thanks to you.
He was in Chicago Typewriter which I still haven’t seen despite my best efforts.

@dncingemma: So my quest to bully everyone (nicely, of course 😊) into watching Chicago Typewriter continues. You WILL get to it soon. I’m manifesting this right now.

Watch it, it is one of my favorite dramas people didn't watch. Maybe because the first few episodes aren't the most interesting, but My God does it make up for it later.

CHICAGO TYPEWRITER is a terrific drama but I think it suffered (along with INAR imo) on how the characters were introduced in the early episodes. I think some found them off-putting and dropped it. For me blame goes to the writer.
After the screaming stops around episode 5 CT settled into a wonderful drama.
Also if you think SIG’s hair is attracting attention beanies had a ball commenting on Yoo In-ah’s hair.

I don't know if this is unfair or not, but I rate dramas based on rewatches.
To me, on first watch CT was ok. Not fantastic, but ok. But then on rewatch it was so boring that I couldn't get through it even with fast forwarding a lot. The scenes dragged endlessly, and the mystery fell completely flat, which was very disappointing considering that I always rewatch crime shows.

@midnight, it is interesting to see if dramas hold up after time or on a rewatch. I am not a rewatcher. One exception might have been HEALER a long time ago. I do occasionally rewatch a scene in an episode that I found moving but I can only think of a couple recent examples e.g. the last 10 minutes of episode 8 of NAVILLERA.

I love rewatching shows. My top favorites are shows I have rewatched tens of times.

3

@midnight: I am not typically a rewatcher, but your way of rating dramas based on how they hold up in rewatches is great. Chicago Typewriter is one of the few dramas I do actually rewatch time-to-time. And yeah, I basically have the opposite opinion of you on that front. Maybe I’ll try rewatching more of my favourites from now on.

There were comments on his terrible hair in the modern-day scenes (I think he had a buzz cut because he was anticipating doing military service and then was exempt due to a tumor) and his beautiful wig in the japanese-occupation era. That hair/makeup artist was a wizard. Yeah the first 2 weeks of CT were a slog. I'm so glad I had stuck around.

Thanks for mentioning that it will be on Netflix, that’s helpful to know!

Fingers crossed for this one 🤔

Was poor Seo Ingook’s hair cut by gardening shears as that is one horrific do. Surely, that should be a contract breach as I’m assuming there is a clause there stating that his hotness should not be interfered with under any circumstances!

The reminder to the great IRY makes it all the more exciting! And wasn't his character in Doom a sort of shaman/reaper? Hopefully It'll all come together in perfect harmony. Good knows how bad Doom was despite not watching further than the pilot...

I really hope it will be a good drama for SIG, but I'm not a big fan of OYS.

I am cautiously excited for this one. I'm a huge SIG fan and while I loved him and PBY in Doom, the writing for that was super disappointing.

Seo In Gook is still my favorite Korean actor despite the fact that I haven't really cared for some of the most recent projects. I never even watched the last episode of Doom at Your Service because I didn't like the pairing of the lead female with Seo In Gook. I think I liked his project choices better when he was still with Jellyfish Entertainment. But I do have high hopes that this new drama will be wonderful and something we can fall in love with.
