[Beanie Recs] Writers and writer’s block

Ahoy, Beanies! It’s time to gather your collective genius for a recommendation series that features you and your drama knowledge. Each week we’ll drop a drama conundrum and leave it up to you to provide a drama rec, and the appropriate rationale behind it, be it long or short. Respond below!

As a wannabe writer, I can relate so much to Yumi’s struggle to put words to the page in Yumi’s Cells. What are some other good dramas featuring writers and writing? Maybe seeing characters overcome their writer’s block will help inspire me!

I hope this two here helps. It only highlights what they did so you might not really see the how when you watch it.

1. Because This is My First Life - Yoon Jiho didn't exactly experience writer's block, but she found inspiration flowing in whenever she's handling chores around the house. The words just come in and they fall just in the right place.
P.S : It's just one scene in BTLIMF, so ...

2. Oh! Master : Han Bi-soo. His block stemmed from a change in location. So if you could try writing at a different number of places, perhaps one of those places could help your writing persona come to the fore when you need it.

Mother of mine it was a weekender from 2019 so its 108 episodes long! There was a writer who published an acclaimed piece but was unable to get her next book completed. There are a number of episodes about how various strategies are put into place to help her and I think her friend was connected to dramas he was successful in his role.

Marriage Chaos she writes and illustrates children’s books. She has difficulty finding a publisher as it’s an unusual style of storytelling.

The male lead in In Need of Romance 2012 (I Need Romance 2) is a writer, and him dealing with finding inspiration/feeling blocked is a big part of some episodes. As a writer myself I found it relatable.

Ki Hoon in My Ajusshi had screenwriter's block for years due to lack of self-confidence. Not to discourage you though! He did start up again eventually, inspired by his own crazy experience and the continued belief in him by his girl. Pighting!

I have only seen it with idols or other contemporary musicians composing their own songs, The miracle, Imitation, To Jenny, Soundtrack#1, Coffee Prince, Her bucket List, One more Time, One fine week, The liar and his lover, Let me be your knight.

I can’t remember if there were composers on Do you like Brahms.

Yes, so simple but catchy. Grab me was my other favourite from that show. The whole collaboration process was a joy to witness. I find it amazing that someone ‘hears’ a song in their head, captures the notes, adds words and voila the rest of us can now hear it too.

I like the Ha-Ha song at the very beginning.
As for composing, I write music for piano, so I don't know how to write lyrics.

Composing the music is the skill that amazes me the most.

Run-on comes to mind. The FL is a translator and not a writer in the strictest sense, but she struggles with finding the right words to convey certain thoughts and emotions when she's adding subtitles to films. I also think that drama exhibits a general love of both written and verbal communication, as well as exploring how we can sometimes flub both of them.

Romance is a Bonus Book and Chicago Typewriter also feature writers and in the case of the first, there's a realistic and yet idealized depiction of the publishing world as well. Both dramas show a deep love of books and respect for writers.

Maybe My Liberation Notes would be a helpful, even if they're not actual writers.

Chicago Typewriter would be my recommendation. For a show so focused on its historical and supernatural elements, it still has a surprisingly powerful story beat throughout on writers and the power of stories. There’s a deep love and appreciation of literature embedded within the narrative. After all, the title literally has the word “typewriter” in it.

And yes, the protagonist is a writer. No list of kdrama authors would be complete without the one and only Seo Hwi-young. And Han Se-joo as well.

In CHICAGO TYPEWRITER Go Kyung-po’s character’s name Yoo Jin-oh was a play on the name of the American playwright Eugene O’Neill.
I concur on all the recommendations for CHICAGO TYPEWRITER.

Chicago Typewriter is a given and also Scripting Your Destiny is a favorite of mine. But Moonlight, It's okay to Not Be Okay and Melo is My Nature are also good dramas that feature writers.

Although there are a lot of dramas that come to mind that has leads as budding or not-so-successful writers, but the one drama that comes to mind when that specifically depicted Writer's block would be Temperature of Love (2017) especially in the 1st half.

Jo Yeo Jeong is a mystery writer in CHEAT ON ME IF YOU CAN. To get over any writer's block, she thinks about ways to kill her husband if he cheats on her. Not recommended for real aspiring writers.

These don't answer the question. I was just reminded of them and made myself laugh.

In 365 Days, Repeat the Year, the FL is a manga writer. She travels back in time amd gets bored because she has to draw everything again!

In W the FL's father is a manga writer who puts things in the story carelessly and has to answer for it later!

Temperature of Love. The FL is a drama writer. ML is a chef. This show had my name on it, but an obnoxious mother derailed me.

Lord Typo! I love it.The evil Lord has somehow gained control of my iPad.

Lord Typo has moved into my house and is sitting in a corner drinking all my gin and sniggering every time I spellcheck my report, knowing perfectly well that I've typed 'form' for 'from' and 'food' for 'good.' He observes with glee that all of the buildings I've inspected are in food condition now. I would slay him, but I'm too weak to draw my sword.

He is most fickle with infidelity and a fiendish villain indeed, is he not! I wish you both vigilance! in your respective battles against him. They will be, alas, never ending.

(There's actually an element of non joke to this though- in that I find inspiration or knowledge in any written form simply by analysing it, lol. Perhaps not a method for everyone but you know ^^)

The Romance of Tiger and Rose: The FL is a script writer who becomes trapped in her own badly written drama, and comes to greatly regret her poor story choices. Her “writing conferences” with the professional storytellers and the fruits are LOL funny.

Can we include "w the two worlds"? The FL stuck in a novel.
Forcasting love and weather, This one had a side character who met his love through illustrating her book about pinguins, which was cute
