Kim Se-jung shows her heart and strength in Today’s Webtoon

More promos have been released for SBS’s office drama Today’s Webtoon, featuring our adorable heroine Kim Se-jung (Business Proposal) as the judo athlete turned webtoon editor, Ohn Ma-eum.

Exploring the inner workings of the webtoon industry, the story follows Ohn’s growth as she begins her new career as a rookie editor. Sharing her journey is fellow rookie Gu Joon-young – played by Nam Yoon-soo (The King’s Affection) — who also has a lot to learn. Guiding them both as a mentor is managing editor Seok Ji-hyung, who is played by Daniel Choi (Ghost Detective).

In the newly released stills, we also get a peek at Go Chang-seok (Memorist), who takes on the role of our heroine’s dad and high school judo coach, Ohn Ki-bong.

The new teaser begins with Ohn Ma-eum getting ready for a judo attack as she narrates, “The future always brings the unexpected.” Lo and behold, her “opponent” turns out to be her soon-to-be-boss, editor-in-chief Park Ho-san (Monstrous) and she belatedly realizes her mistake. Thankfully, Park shows appreciation for Ohn’s passion and believes she’ll work hard if she’s hired for their team.

In response, Ohn pledges to put her whole heart into the work and not cause trouble for the team. Downing drinks at the work dinner afterwards, she cutely comments on the sweet taste and that they can’t go home. The team is then  shocked when Ohn easily piggybacks her drunk fellow rookie Gu. In the intermittent text screens we read: “The judo athlete who dreamed of getting a gold medal becomes a webtoon editor?!”

Back at work, managing editor Seok questions what it means to be a true editor and we watch Ohn try her best to support one of the company’s writers, Im Chul-soo (Alchemy of Souls). The teaser then comes to a close with Ohn hanging her new work ID badge next to her judo medals. She explains that she does love judo, but she loves webtoons just as much.

Premiering July 29 in SBS’s Friday-Saturday slot, production for Today’s Webtoon is led by a team of four with PD Jo Soo-won (Pinocchio, Thirty But Seventeen) and PD Kim Young-hwan co-directing alongside writers Jo Yeh-rang and Lee Jae-eun.

The original was great as i went in with not much expectation and ended up loving it...It had a lot of heart and hope this version will keep it as well...The original had very subtle romance as that wasn't the point and the "male lead" even was kinda unlikable at start so hope here won't ruin it adding romance just because....

Looking at these stills, all I can say is that I wish Kim Se-jung was playing the FL in Cafe Minamdang right now.

@laurensophie: So true. I also imagined SIG with Jung Somin given their scorching chemistry in ‘The Smile has left your Eyes’.

I always wonder how such miscasting occurs. If they are legitimately auditioned, observed and assessed, how could the acting shortcomings and absence of chemistry not be obvious to see for the showrunners?

I feel like the FL role is written so badly, I'm not sure if I want to inflict Kim Se-jeong or anyone who is still struggling to establish themselves with it. It's what I think of as a "it's a paycheck/got to get my face out there so they still remember I'm in the business" sort of role. OYS's has her share of good and bad dramas, but is an established lead and had a good role in Mad For Each Other, so having a bad one now won't hurt as bad.

I don't think k-dramas do an auditioning process for the lead roles for actors who have already been established leads. I think once you've hit a certain level, you're not asked to audition. They're churning out entire new dramas every couple of months and the pace is fast. In American shows, you film pilot episodes and commit to the cast for years.

I remember when Yeon Yuh-jeong was tapped to audition for Pachinko, which was headed by Apple TV, she felt insulted and didn't take up the offer for an audition. She joined only when they decided to give her the role. Lee Minho went through the audition process though. The Pachinko audition was his first audition in 13 years. So I'm guessing, he hadn't auditioned since BOF.

You make excellent points about the writing, but my only criteria here is that I think Kim Se-jeong would have better chemistry with SIG. Maybe I'll see if I'm right about that in a future project.

I'm excited for this, especially since it's being led by Kim Se-jung, and I like webtoons (and manhwas, though the two overlap now that manhwa can be read on mobile devices too). I also miss Daniel Choi. Nice to see Im Chul-soo showing up here too! I used to be a japanese shoujo and josei manga fan in my teens and early twenties. Even read some manhwas back when they were in black and white. Then got into the occasional korean webtoon about 5 or 6 years ago. This past year, I got more into webtoons and manhwas and just discovered a whole wealth of stories and beautiful art and really handsome webtoon male leads. I hope they make a comment on the number of male leads with black hair and red eyes and the plight of the blond male characters.

This role sounds like it was made for KSJ. I’m watching the j-drama now (the heroine is so likeable and full of life, right up KSJ’s alley) but i have a feeling k-version will most likely differ in the storyline.
