Adamas: Episodes 15-16 (Final)

What a finale! We have followed our twins on their journey and taken every twist and turn with them. There are tons more to be had in the drama’s conclusion, but the wallop it packs isn’t only about the action — it’s also about the culmination of long-fought fights and deep familial bonds and emotions. Also, Ji Sung is amazing.

EPISODES 15-16 WEECAP

If it was up to me I would have delayed watching this finale for weeks! I don’t want it to be over, I don’t want to say goodbye to our twins, and and and… what if one of them doesn’t make it!?

But, getting right into it, we pick up with the cliffhangers from last week: Woo-shin’s eureka moment over the adamas’ hiding spot, and Soo-hyun and the SIH discovering what is essentially Team A’s mass grave site.

Interestingly, Episode 15 is a pretty quiet episode — low on action, heavy on planning and setup, and mostly centered around the brothers coming to terms with everything that they’ve uncovered. And you know what? It was a perfect episode because not only were they laying ground for the final episode, but the emotions were so raw and heartrending that — dangit, Ji Sung — I’m just completely carried away by his portrayal of these brothers. In fact, most of my notes for these scenes between them consisted of this: adjajkdhjkashddfkjasjdhasjdjkahdjah!!!!!!! which is the only way to really explain them.

The first is when Woo-shin, in his meditative way, finally meets up with the far-more-harried Soo-hyun and gently helps him realize where the adamas is. This scene is just packed out with amazing story and amazing acting — from Ji Sung playing both sides of this exchange so masterfully, to the willful decision of Woo-shin to share the truth, even though he knows it will break his brother.

And it does. Seeing Soo-hyun’s agony is just… agonizing. Lee Chang-woo is nearby and witnesses the whole thing, eventually becoming a part of the exchange. First, Soo-hyun is furious for the danger they were in all along (how he shattered that precious toy!!), but then just has to laugh over the irony of it all — that the boys had the adamas all along. It’s the best part of the drama, right here, not only the way it’s drenched in irony and heartache, but the way the brothers’ intentions are overlapping, too.

Woo-shin, we learn, embarked on this whole thing out of love for his brother, knowing the agony he was in all his life, blaming himself for his father’s death. And just like that Soo-hyun’s whole life of guilt and grief is turned upside down.

But it just gets ever better, because while the team is planning out what the heck they’re going to do — and Seo-hee follows a creepy “doctor” and finds Team A’s current hideout — there’s all this far deeper stuff going on too.

The brothers meet up yet again and this time it’s even more heart-wrenching, if you can believe it, with Soo-hyun breaking down in sobs, and Woo-shin putting his hand on his brother’s heart and wishing he wasn’t in pain. GAH!! This story has just transcended wildly well-written suspense drama and hit me directly in the heart with my favorite sort of story ever: about family, brothers, heartache, and sacrifice. I need a moment.

We continue with a whole lot of hatching of plans and making deals until we finally get to the action that sets off most everything to come. Soo-hyun and what’s left of the SIH need to get their hands on Team Leader Lee, so they make a plan to head to the chairman’s funeral where Team A will be gathered.

But it all goes to the devil quite fast when their hideout is raided by Team A and their endless supply of rifles. Our good guys have a couple of handguns and are running for their lives (leaving the dead behind and also the rat in their midst!) until they’re boxed into a tiny room and prepare to make a final stand.

It’s here where I literally gasped loud enough to wake up the entire neighborhood. Lee Chang-woo motions for Soo-hyun to move behind him so that he’s protected… except he says, “Woo-shin-ah, move behind me.” OMG, sure enough it’s Woo-shin! The boys not only switched for a second time, but Lee Chang-woo knew the difference between his estranged identical twin sons and holy moly it’s just one of the best moments the drama has packaged up thus far. It says everything that we need to know about Lee Chang-woo as a father, and it makes his inevitable and sacrificial death all the more devastating.

Woo-shin and the SIH are saved thanks to Seo-hee who contacted Hyuk-pil and convinced him to help them. And so, all of Team A is apprehended, and boy is it satisfying.

But there are a lot more moments of realization to come, because Seo-hee realizes that Soo-hyun is actually Woo-shin, and Woo-shin realizes that the very person they need to capture is not there: Team Leader Lee.

The final episode backs up and gives us more context on how that whole operation played out, but I’m glad they kept it from us because those twists were everything.

Woo-shin might be safe for now, but it’s Soo-hyun who is in danger. While all of Team A was supposedly offsite, he was going to their hideout to snoop around. But Team Leader Lee is there waiting, and the two have a truly horrific fight. Like, some fast-forwarding was necessary, that’s how brutal it got.

Soo-hyun puts up an impressive fight against this trained killer, but in the end he’s strangled by Lee and it’s… horrifying. And what’s worse is Lee’s laughing and hollering afterwards. He’s truly an animal. And Soo-hyun is really dead!? Disbelief is the only thing keeping me from sobbing right now.

Seo-hee and Woo-shin, followed by Tae-sung and [my new oppa] Agent Han (Won Tae-min), drive like crazy people following the GPS tracker in Soo-hyun’s hand. It’s a race against the clock and I don’t know what. is. happening.

It’s a testament to this drama’s amazing screenwriting, though, that when we find out what’s happened to Soo-hyun, we don’t really need any dialogue at all. The GPS signal goes out and as they all pull up to the spot, all we need to see is the looks on Tae-sung and Agent Han’s faces to know exactly what’s going on.

Woo-shin and crew run out to the shoreline, and it’s just empty water in front of them. This scene is so powerful; it’s like the drama knew that it didn’t even need words.

The heartbreak level is off the charts, but they still need to catch Team Leader Lee, which leads to another vicious fight, first with him and Tae-sung (and oppa Han), and then a truly horrifying standoff with Woo-shin.

I could start every sentence in this weecap with “Ji Sung’s acting is aMAZing” and it still wouldn’t be enough because he blew me away in these episodes. In this scene, Woo-shin endures Lee’s taunts about how he killed his brother, and with a self-restraint that’s hard to imagine, somehow keeps himself from shooting Lee fatally during his taunts, and instead incapacitates him.

“It’s over,” Tae-sung says to Woo-shin as they apprehend Lee — but Woo-shin just collapses onto him and sobs. Dude, I don’t know how many more of these sobbing broken hero scenes my heart can handle.

But of course, apprehending the culprits isn’t really the end, and even though they’re in custody, the “higher ups” are pulling the strings, and we see the SIH/good guys struggle to get anywhere.

Backtracking a bit is Woo-shin’s earlier deal with Hye-soo — Woo-shin will give her the adamas for Team Leader Lee, and his end-goal of a retrial. She’s already got her own deal going on with Lee, though, and she and Team A have quickly formed an alliance that’s (seemingly) untouchable.

In the space of mere days Hye-soo has effectively usurped Haesong from her husband’s grip, and with Team A behind her, she’s the new master. Literally. I guess after so many years of living in that hell she learned how to become a master chess player and manipulator because we see her outwit and outplay everyone with what she can now offer from her throne.

She gives Lee what he wants (Soo-hyun), and then she even fearlessly maneuvers her way out of the hit on her own head, offering Sun what she wants (to torture her sister, and boy does she).

All the action feels over, but we have no real resolution. Seo-hee mourns for her parents and regrets everything that brought her to that point. Woo-shin sits on the shorefront where Soo-hyun disappeared — as does Seo-hee — and they mourn for him. It’s another beautiful scene where Woo-shin grieves and admits how guilty he feels: “I started this whole thing to make Soo-hyun feel less guilty, but it’s like I pushed him into that sea myself.” More crying. And I’m crying, too.

For a little while, it seems like Woo-shin is tempted to enact revenge on Lee, but even Tae-sung (I love how these two so openly trust and rely on each other now!) tells him it’s not worth it. That getting rid of Lee won’t get rid of the pain — or the root of the corruption.

And so, that makes Woo-shin’s visit to Haesong mansion all the more powerful. We get a lot of callbacks to the opening of the drama, but this time Woo-shin is greeted with a smile by Dragon Lady Kwon and welcomed to see the new master… Hye-soo.

Woo-shin seems lighter than when we last saw him. He tosses a duffel bag at Hye-soo’s feet and says it’s the adamas, and in exchange for it, he wants her to keep Team Leader Lee alive, so he can be punished by the law. She says she thought their deal was off, and Woo-shin says disappointedly exactly what I’ve been riding on the whole time: I thought that you of all people in this house would have the most decent heart.

It strikes me that where we’ve landed at the end of this drama is this: each character has suffered incomparable losses and there’s so much grief — some that comes out in vengeance, and some that comes out as a desire for truth.

The plot feels settled… ish? Woo-shin and Seo-hee meet up and talk about how no one wants to believe the truth about Haesong and Team A, despite her convincing journalist and Hwang’s testimony. Woo-shin agrees, and says he’s going to write a book about it; people are more likely to believe fiction, anyway. And maybe they’ll put the dots together then.

I loved this as the ending of the story — that although there was no way for them to completely beat the mountain of power in front of them, they will continue fighting to reveal the truth (as Woo-shin so eloquently says to Hye-soo).

And then we get to our twist. And I’ll be honest, I’m not quite sure how I feel about this yet, and I haven’t had enough time to digest it. But, Seo-hee heads over to Woo-shin’s apartment to get interviewed for the aforementioned book, and offhandedly notices a letter on his desk that’s left opened as if it was read in a hurry. It reads: Song Soo-hyun is alive. Find the adamas.

WHAT! Just, what!? There are a million different ways to read this — beyond bait for a second season — but in our closing shots, we see Woo-shin (I think?) at the shore again. The slightest smile dashes across his face, and we pan down to see the adamas in his hand.

So, are we right to think that once again there’s a fake one in the possession of Haesong? And who sent the letter? My knee-jerk reaction was Hye-soo, because it’s so circular, but I’m not sure, since she didn’t seem to hold to his request to keep Lee alive (ordering the hit via Sun). Or, maybe Soo-hyun himself sent the letter? And is that Soo-hyun on the beach with the adamas, not Woo-shin? That might make more sense, but of course the left/wounded hand is in a pocket, killing our only clue as to which twin it is… I need a few days to ponder through that twist and all the clues there, but honestly I’m not even ready to think about that too deeply right now.

My heart is still lost in these last few episodes, and I can’t think beyond them yet. All those emotions and tears and brutal deaths. Everything that was between our brothers, spoken and unspoken. Dammit, what an amazing show.

@missvictrix Am I wrong to think that they might have chose this ending purposefully and were/are planning for 2nd season??

S2 is not confirmed.. so it's hard to tell if there is one planned or if the writer just left it open just for the heck of it. Given the ratings, i doubt it will happen..
Woo Shin does say he will meet Hye Soo again but they will be on the opposite end.. so may be its a possibility?
But I am not convinced Hye-Soo got this 'chaebol' virus suddenly. . her motive is so unclear to me.. it was until about Ep 10 - revenge for MinJo's death.. but now, not sure..

You r so right! I wonder when exactly she got infected with that virus.

So, if they r not going to make 2nd season ( credit to the ratings ) I'll assume that they were originally planning to make it conclusive with Soo Hyun's death but then they saw us praying nd requesting so hard for both the twins to make this out alive, they threw the logic out of window and gave us an open ending so that we can assume that Soo Hyun is alive with that crap letter and small smirk on little to sexy Ji sung( ◜‿◝ )♡'s face.

I am with you on Hye Soo. They wrote her character to be a mystery and consistenly maintained it till the end because her sudden desire to own Haesong is befuddling.

**sobs**** Its over.. Why is it over..

Those 2 scenes in Ep 15 got me.. so much emotions. I don't know how Ji Sung does this. He gets these emotions so dang right.. every single time.. And Woo ShinAAAA.. he did that for this brother..
Brothers!! awwww..

OMG! @missvictrix, where did this Oppa come from?? Like, you found an oppa amidst all this chaos and bloodshed??? Really?? lol..

ok.. the ending - No, me NOT happy.. I was confused last night. and was hoping to get more clarity.. but nope.. it doesn't make sense..
I find it hard to believe Soo-Hyun will fake his own death without his brother knowing. I believe they know what it means if one of them dies.. so if it was Hye-Soo who sent the letter (A tie back to her sending the letter and hence starting the whole thing) why does Adamas matter? TO her, of all people?
And the show did not explain her motive till the end.. and that doesn't make sense to me.. If she did turn dark (like Chairman) i am NOT convinced. lol..When did it start.. and why??
Is this set up for S2? or is it just an open ending?
How much ever I think about it, it doesn't make sense to me.

so in my head, Soo Hyun and Seo-Hee are walking on the beach side by side (my power couple) and Woo Shin is sitting on the shore thinking pensively (while looking sexy while doing so).. Hye Soo listed the company public, gave the shares to employees and killed the family business, ending the chaebol rule..
and Sun somehow died because those shoes, clothes and bike dont belong together.. lol.. THE END.

p.s Ji Sung, my heart.. Such an incredible fine actor..

I knew that it was Woo-sin with the SIH because he kept his hand in his pocket the whole time. Plus when the first person got shot, he forgot himself in shock and we see the bandage. I like that the show allowed us to have that little moment of smugness and also give us the feels when Chang-woo knew it too.

I'm with you @missvictrix - not really sure how to feel about the twist at the end. One part of me feels the last 5 minutes of the finale were unnecessary. I'd braced myself for one of the twins to die pretty much from Ep. 1 when Woo-sin made that "I'll call you hyung once before death" crack.

But then I'm so happy Soo-hyun is alive that story and logic go out of the window 😭. I doubt the show will get a second season, given the ratings, but if it does I'm all in!

We always knew they both were connected. They might not show it in words but we always felt it. But to see all this come together and see how much they care for each other, was...emotional.
And when Ji Sung cries, it really hurts.. he is just so vulnerable when he cries or breakdown..
He is just so so good.

The ending leaves me a little perplexed. Is it just an open ending and/or is season 2 planned?
I wasn't really surprised that Soo-hyun is probably not dead. It was too noticeable that his body wasn't found.

That Hye-soo turns to the (light) dark side didn't really shock me. At the latest when she had Ms Kwon brought to the hospital so she could kill Chairman Kwon, this was foreseeable.

I didn't like the penultimate episode as much as the previous ones. One reason might be that I'm not really interested in shoot-outs, I'm more a fan of intrigue and surprises.
It's good that Hyun-jo got his just punishment, but it bugs me that Sun was able to drive off.

How Sun wasn't done away with is one of the high ranking mysteries of Adamas. How did she manage to keep her head? Or better still, how did it not occur to any character, even Kang Hyuk-Pil of the SIH to place a mark on her head? Did they forget, or did they suddenly undergo a lobotomy? It doesn't bother me, but it has me asking questions.

I thought so too. She could have called in a doc. But, it's Hye-soo's father's hospital, and Hye-soo placed a mark on Hyunjo. Yoon calling in a doc might not help. And we don't know how long it has been since the substance has been residing in his system so who says it would help cleanse his system? And I'm sure Sun would do a perfect job in rendering Hyunjo close to invalid.

2

what is Sun's backstory? Did I miss anything?

The weecap is out so fast, I haven't had time to gather my thoughts. Thank you @missvictrix for the timely and amazing weecaps these past eight weeks.

There's no way this is getting a S2 given the ratings and lack of buzz (I don't think this was fully preproduced so they should have known that when the finale was filmed), so I will just view it as an open ending. It doesn't really make sense to me, but I'm happy thinking Soo-hyun is alive. I knew he was going to die or "die" from the first week given the foreshadowing.

Ji Sung was amazing. This PD needs to get lots of work.

I had this slim tiny hope that Song Su-hyeon wasn’t ending up dead by the time ep 16 ends. The twins must be complete by the end of this long scuffle. ‘His eyes were opened at the end of the strangulation and there was still some life in it', ‘He couldn’t be dead just like that’. These were the thoughts running through my head as the ending drew closer. And in Adamas’s last 90 secs of runtime of which at that point I was accepting that pfft, Su-hyeon is gone for real, two bombs had me in delightful rejoicing. Su-hyeon being alive, and Woo-shin freaking gave Hye-soo a fake Adamas. 'Like what the…😮? That's the exact same stunt Lee Changwoo pulled on Chairman Kwon'. Applaudissez, Woo-shin. You blew my mind to higher levels.

Woo-shin is my favorite twin. Sometimes I ask why he isn’t working in the criminal department because he’ll be so good at it. Cho Yeo-jung was really good with her writer instincts in Cheat On Me, If You Can, but Ji Sung’s Ha Woo-shin has me in absolute awe. His mind works at high levels.

The Adamas reveal scene at the SIH new base between father and sons, it was crystal clear who was who. Ji Sung did wonders characterizing two people distinctly. Woo-shin crying silently or Su-hyeon crying loudly had me in awe with Ji Sung's acting. He's so good and I can't stop praising him.

I thought Hye-soo had a decent heart to be different, turns out she's as crazy as Chairman Kwon. Min-jo would be disappointed to see what she has turned out to be. But I must say that the punishment she meted out on Hyunjo and Yoon had me in a mix reaction of shivers and respect.

Ha Woo-shin vs Hye-soo. I’m in for this sugar-fest for season 2. They are way different from the people we have as adversaries in season 1 - refined, calm, regal, serene individuals. To see them go against each other has me salivating, the kind of adversaries I've wanted in dramaland.

Despite my dislike of the drama ending, I would watch S2 for Hye Soo against Woo Shin because both are a force to reckon, but part me thinks there is a third player in the mix and Hye Soo isn't an all out antagonist.

The person who saved Su-hyeon. Possibly there could be a third player. That message came from a 2nd person perspective but it could be Su-hyeon sending the message himself.
But Hye-soo being an all out antagonist, I'm definitely sure of it. She's been acting of her own accord all this while. Years of being in the Kwon family must have thought her a lot of a thing or two more about the dangerous world cause I'm sure she's exposed to it because she is no enthusiast, but not to see her implement it professionally to this fashion and to this extent. Her love for Min-jo might have pushed her to the front but I don't think it's Min-jo's love motivating her anymore. Does she want to rebrand Haesong from the ground up? Or does she want to go sinister? She's written and portrayed so jaded that I can't tell. Which is why I want to see her go all out against Woo-shin. Both of them are alike than not and I'm sure they've realized that already.

I refuse to believe that she is the ultimate baddie because she never showed any greed unlike the others in the family. There were literally zero scenes of her leading to her current desire. Also, the last scene of Team Leader Lee showed that she kept her end of the bargain with Woo Shin. She trapped Lee with a choice of being jailed and staying under Haesong protection or get killed by Sun. Scenes like these portray her as a grey character than as an evil person.

Oh no! I never saw her as an evil antagonist. She's definitely a grey antagonist.

Same. I am not convinced about the ending. But, I will take these 2 actors in the same frame anytime. Like jerry said, they both are calm and thinkers. They will make a great pair. But alas, I wanted to see them on the same team.

Third player? I can't think of one. I don't think the writer has thought/planned for S2.
I think it was Hye-Soo saving him (same way she saved Lee from the lake) and sending the letter (Same way she sent the letter at the start of the drama)... What's missing is - What is her agenda? What's her motive?

Loved how Jisung cried to match the personalities: reckless sobbing for Suhyeon and restrained tears for Wooshin.

Tbh, was kind of disappointed at 16. I spent the middle 90% waiting for the drama to bring Suhyeon back alive and speculating the # of days that must have passed by, which kept me from paying attention to anything else. Would have preferred if they kept it a thriller until the end.

I know I keep repeating this but I still want to say JISUNG IS AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING!!!! Even if you wake me from sleep I will say this 😬

Although, I will miss these weekly episodes and be amazed by his acting. I can't wait to see him soon in his next project. Hopefully a much better project and reach( ratings)

Since I'm mostly going mention only Ji Sung, here goes. He put me in a emotional rollercoaster mostly with angst, fear and pain. My heart ached when Soo Hyun sobbed and Wooshin comforting him. Also, when Wooshin confronted Lee, I wanted Wooshin to shoot him right then, and when he did I was way beyond pleased. (I cheered when he shot his other leg too!!! ) Which was followed by Wooshin's breakdown, which was heartwrenching for me, his eyes when he endured Lee's taunts and how is hand was shaking when Lee will not reveal what he did to Soo Hyun!! Jisung made me cry here and it doesn't end here. That beach scene with Seo Hee, OMG! His words filled with pain ' I miss Soo Hyun!', ' I did everything for him but he was pushed into the sea by myself' and 'nothing matters now Soo Hyun is gone' it's endless and I was drained like Wooshin at the end of it.

Honestly I would've accepted that Soo Hyun died if they are going for the darker route (or he shouldn't have died in the first place) instead of turning this to a bait for s2😐. There were many hints that Soo Hyun might not make it but still it doesn't make it easier to watch that horrific fight with Lee, I was denial when he was strangled and went limp (later carried to his car). I mean how did he survive? I just to threw the logic out of window ☹️. If they want to show that he survived, prove me !! Who sent this letter to Wooshin? My guess was Hye Soo too but I don't think she knows it's a fake?! I don't think she really cares anything now?! She was the reason Soo Hyun died in the first place 🤷🏼‍♀️ I don't think it was Soo Hyun who sent the letter either! He was shot and strangled, and who rescued him? Was it Wooshin/Soo Hyun at the end?

I get Wooshin plan to expose corruption and it will be a starting point?! But we need closure atleast with the twins - we deserve that. The good guys lost - terribly.

I don't think we will get s2 either, but they can't let the audience to hang in there?! Remember vagabond? If there was any S2 happening I would definitely watch it, just to see Wooshin taking down Haesong and Hye Soo.

On a side note - Jisung is way too hot ( and sexy) in that suit and with that gun. I want see him a action role?! 😬

Kdramas and mucked up endings will give any other tropes a run for its money. I completely disliked the ending even though there were scenes that I enjoyed.

Hyuk Pil resigned but he could still call the special-ops to save the SIH team? If so, why did no one on the SIH team think of it and why Seo Hee wasted time on Byung Cheol instead of convincing Hyuk Pil to gather special-ops?

Lee Changwoo's death after a great build up of him as former Team A leader had me rolling my eyes. With his experience, he couldn't identify the black sheep in the team? When he simply kept sitting and watching the SIH team, I thought he was observing them and would catch the spy. I guess, I expected so much after the stunning Ep 13/14.

Seo Hee visting the sea more than her parents graveyard made me question if she even cared for her parents. She was more gutted by Soo Hyun's absence than her own parents.

Hye Soo's sudden ambitions and Woo Shin's idea to inform the public of the deception through the book was very confusing. I do not understand their end goal.

The entire lead up to the SIH team getting ambushed to Soo Hyun getting killed in Team A's site was very disappointing.

Inspite of my complaints, I am actually amazed at the directing because I wanted both Ji Sungs on screen at the same time, but for most part of their conversation in EP 15 the camera had them in either long shot or singular focused shot (despite them sitting side by side in a car) and I was pretty frustated, but everything vanished the moment Woo Shin consoled Soo Hyun. It was at this point I realized the director's brilliance because the camera work of separating the twins till that scene, made the tears all the more powerful and real.

Nothing on Ji Sung because he is a fabulous actor ❤ and if you haven't watched "Familiar Wife" what are you waiting for?

Thank you @missvictrix for the recaps and LOL at you finding a new oppa in unlikely scenes😂

I enjoyed the drama until Ep 14 and I am going to pretend that everything worked according to Soo Hyun's plan and Lee Changwoo confronted Lee at the funeral room and both got arrested in the end. The drama ends with both brothers having a burger in the same spot as the opening scene.

She started out with dark mysterious edges but once she committed to her path the web around her just go so much more dark/obscured. Good thing Seo Ji-hye has such great screen presence, too, or else this role could have felt too femme fatale and flat. Anyway, there's not one actor that I didn't love here (well, except our "Sun" haha)

I knew he wasn't dead. As bombastic as the show is, his death was super anti-climatic, so I didn't believe it for a second. I didn't like the ending. Sun is still alive being annoying. Her older sister didn't call for doctors because Sun claimed he would be comatose. Hye Soo is doing something. I couldn't tell if Woo Shin had a fake Adamas or not. SIGH, this a throw back to OG kdramas where the ending was open ended. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now. Otherwise it was a fun ride.

I think I’m going to have to say that the ending is unsatisfying for me.

“Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”
- Neil Gaiman (who in turn paraphrases the original G. K. Chesterton quote that I will put at the very bottom of this)

I swing the other way from you on this, @missvictrix.

Sometimes, a story’s purpose is to leave you with the message that the fight against the dragon is a constant and ongoing battle, but it is a noble battle that must be fought, over and over again, if necessary, nonetheless. And that’s fine.
But sometimes your story should just let the dragon be beaten, and properly, wholly defeated, as the end note instead. And that’s also fine, because that’s what fiction is for.

For me, this show should’ve been the latter, rather than the former.

Although Woosin’s comments to Seohee about constantly fighting for truth are not WRONG, I felt the show had better set up for a proper takedown, and indeed would’ve been more narratively satisfying if so, than a “well the battle is fought (or is it though) but the war is not over” approach, instead, and used Haesong as the metaphorical dragon to instill a sense of hope and fulfillment in both the characters and the audience.
You can do that you know; you don’t HAVE to torture your characters for all eternity. You don’t have to succumb to a kind of (purportedly) inevitable meaninglessness or cynicism.

I think it would’ve been stronger for this.
To end on a note of true defeat for Haesong, and for the Twins and Seohee on a note of peace, or the beginning of finding peace.

I think this would’ve made the Twins’ (and Seohee’s) fight, for each other, their adoptive father, their real father, and all the people that died on the way more worthwhile; why leave Seohee and Woosin fumbling to pick up the pieces (which aren’t even necessary if Soohyun isn’t dead) at all. Why not give them a moment of respite, that the dragon has been beaten, not without sacrifice, but still beaten, and then they can go and nurse their wounds and each other’s?

And similarly, I think I would’ve given this kind of ending to, and favored this for Hye-soo also.
As interesting in some ways as it is for her to decide to steal Haesong from those who have wronged her and her dead lover, instead of being its downfall, I think I would’ve preferred overall had she stolen it from out under the Chairman and her husband, and then just utterly destroyed it.

I felt like they were originally going for that also; a ”I will take down this entire company and burn it to the ground, for you have killed my lover and you will rue the day" arc for Hye-soo, and then decided to switch to and end on a ”I will take everything from you and have it for myself as revenge whilst you suffer in silence/death whilst I succumb to my thirst for retribution turning to a thirst for power"...

... arc instead.

But I felt like this switch wasn’t as earnt as it should’ve been, and the more I think about it, the more sudden and out of place I find it. Both can work, but for this story, I think sticking to the former would’ve made more sense and would’ve been easier to resolve.

I think a better ending then, would’ve been something along the lines of the following:

> Hye-soo kills Chairman Kwon at the hand of Lady Kwon. (What happens to Lady Kwon after that I don’t know. Maybe she turns herself in, after the below. Whatever is most necessary for her arc to resolve other than killing the Chairman, that I haven’t thought of yet.)

> Hye-soo steals Haesong from under her husband, but instead of merely ruling in his stead, she tears it to the ground: although opening it to the public and stepping down is AN option, I think I’d prefer full collapse, as we all know most of the shareholders are shady and ex-Team A and implicit in the company’s sins anyway. She exposes everything. She throws Team A under the bus. She doesn’t just dissemble Ares, she pulls the entire rug out from under Haesong and watches it burn; she razes it to the ground.

> And, SHE’s the one that saves Soohyun somehow.
(N.B. this could happen MULTIPLE ways- multiple scenarios here could work to the same effect, some of which don’t even necessarily involve her saving Soohyun outright, not going into all the HOWS right now-)
But the important thing is that she does so because of her line to Secretary Yoon through Sun: ”at least the one you love most is alive.”

Essentially, she saves Soohyun and betrays Team Leader A and Team A, because Soohyun is the one Woosin (and Seohee) loves the most. This would be more in line with her actions to Hyunjo, and her motivations pertaining to Minjo, and would also resolve the arc between her and Woosin thematically (imo.)

> Of course, the entire set up for the finale could be changed so Soohyun is never in danger either of his own stupidity, the script’s stupidity, OR Lee Teamjangnim, who, should he have been following his motivations with more accuracy, should’ve gone after Woosin instead and attempted to make Soohyun watch, which Hye-Soo and Lee Changwoo would’ve then interfered on, thus saving the twins, and ending on a more cathartic note, wherein Lee Changwoo dies fighting Lee, to the horror of the brothers, enabling his death to have more impact than it did in current canon (which I found very disenchanting after so much build up), and resolving his arc thematically with the twins, and the twins with the Adamas.

> But EITHER WAY you do it, I need an angsty reunion scene between both Woosin and Soohyun, and Soohyun and Seohee, which is shot in parallel to the collapse of Haesong, Lee Changwoo and Lee’s deaths, and Adamas sinking to the bottom of the ocean, never to be seen again, and then a final series of shots with everybody Less Sad ™.

> (I don’t particularly care what happens to Sun. I know some...

... people do. I don’t really. Oh ok, rewrite her to have more depth with her sister earlier on and make us like her as much as the writer seems to, to justify their current ending, or kill them both off somehow in whatever way is most satisfying narratively, which I can’t really think of right now, because I don’t really care. Same with the SIH. (Except that Woosin really shouldn’t be so nice to Taesung for killing that innocent guard lmao.))

> Logistically, I don’t know how this all works as it doesn’t answer or solve everything, but it doesn’t really matter as long as the narrative and thematic beats are the same and have the same conclusion: Haesong collapses. Lee Changwoo dies saving the Twins. The Adamas is lost. The Twins and Seohee take a VERY LONG ACTUAL HOLIDAY (maybe a permanent one) as per @mayhemf's beach scene above. (Hye-soo fades from public view and goes back to her flowers somewhere, having avenged her beloved’s death, and leaving viewers to argue about whether this would send a too positive message regarding revenge or not :P)

I kept trying to figure out why they decided to end the show like they did, instead of above.
In my opinion they had more than enough incentive and set up and narrative direction, to justify the above, indeed, the above seemed most likely in a lot of ways.
They also had enough brains behind the writing and directing team imo, to write a version of the above that might not’ve made 100% sense or addressed EVERYTHING, but would’ve made enough sense to feel resolved, and right.

But they just didn’t. I can’t say I think it’s wholly that it “lost its way” or “didn’t know where it was going”, because too much of every other week implied otherwise. I do think it lacked some of the “how to get there” in the last quarter particularly (the cracks in which became more obvious after the finale for me), but not enough for this to be the sole problem.

Instead, the most obvious answer to me seems to be that they decided to push for a second season.

But that just leaves me with another “why”, in place of the first, one that I constantly have for writers everywhere when they decide to keep going, when they should just stop, and one I still don’t have an answer for, besides the material, and one that I am thus in constant frustration over.

Why. Just end your story well there. Better to end it well now, than to never end it at all, or to open up the possibility of ending it badly in another year. Just. Why. You had all the pieces. Why didn’t you use them. What was stopping you. What is your fatal flaw? You seemed to have enough vision at least. Was I just blinded by the pretty all show and you didn’t actually ever have it? Did you get an idea bug that to end on another Adamas twist parallel was better than to end on an episode 1 opening parallel, or, God forbid, you deny your cynicism the light of day and end on a Eucatastrophe instead? Gosh.
*heavy and hearfelt sigh*...

... Despite all this, and everything else unmentioned, I have to say I enjoyed the ride and journey of this show immensely. I was pretty much never bored or bothered by the pacing, (which I know wasn’t the case for some people who watched this elsewhere, and is quite the feat for me in general, since boredom is a frequent killer), I loved the directing especially- it was so enjoying to watch visually and technically from that perspective and I will be keeping an eye out of the PDnim in future projects, I ended up enjoying several characters (y’all know who) enough (a lot) to keep me invested (another feat) for the full run time, and I found the plot FUN for most of it, rather than anything else… which is a feat in itself again, and perhaps a bit of an oddity, because I could’ve easily found it annoying instead.

Anyway, an honourable shout out to the scene this week where the Twins uncover the Adamas in the figurine, because that was phenomenal, and, I’ve been drafting reunion scenes between Woosin and Seohee, and Soohyun in my head all morning (under or over arm hugs?) so… brb going to write some indulgent fanfiction lmao.

"The timidity of the child or the savage is entirely reasonable; they are alarmed at this world, because this world is a very alarming place. They dislike being alone because it is verily and indeed an awful idea to be alone. Barbarians fear the unknown for the same reason that Agnostics worship it– because it is a fact. Fairy tales, then, are not responsible for producing in children fear, or any of the shapes of fear; fairy tales do not give the child the idea of the evil or the ugly; that is in the child already, because it is in the world already. Fairy tales do not give the child his first idea of bogey. What fairy tales give the child is his first clear idea of the possible defeat of bogey. The baby has known the dragon intimately ever since he had an imagination. What the fairy tale provides for him is a St. George to kill the dragon."
~ G. K. Chesterton, The Red Angel in Tremendous Trifles

To be honest, I always felt that this show was indeed part, or a kind of fairytale:
The haunted castle. The evil king. The creepy grounds. The Twins. The missing treasure. The quest. The secret passages and forbidden rooms. The eerie settings, the warring factions, the disturbing butler, and the trapped princess in the tower.
Whilst it lost a little (or maybe a lot) of it's modern gothic fairytaleness as it went on, instead settling into an indulgent thriller (whilst still somehow maintaining a similar tone, and its particular style), nonetheless I think it deserved a fairytale ending ;)

Given the lacklustre ratings and lack of buzz (boo!!), I seriously doubt Adamas is getting a second season to answer the questions left behind by the open ending. Regardless, I don’t think it’s quite so open-ended that I’m left dissatisfied by the ending. It’s not much of an happy ending or even a bittersweet one, but it feels thematically right, I guess. I don’t know. I still don’t fully know how to feel about episode 16 yet.

Mixed feelings about the ending aside, holy shit. What a show. Ji Sung is best. Ji Sung is the best. Ji Sung is the freaking BEST. I never want to see anybody ever question his place as one of the best actors working in the industry. The supporting actors were all incredible as well - with particular praise to Seo Ji-hye as the enigmatic and ambiguous Hye-soo, Hwang Jung-min as the complicated Dragon Lady Kwon, and Heo Sung-tae as the not-bad-guy Tae-sung. They would’ve been one-note caricatures in many a lesser drama, but Adamas took the time and effort to see what made them tick underneath the easy stereotypes they initially came off as and the drama is so much more better for it. Plus, it’s nice to see Heo Sung-tae not be an irredeemable piece of shit for once.

The writer has instantly shot to my must-watch list with just their debut work, which is also unbelievable to me. Imagine debuting into this notoriously competitive and saturated industry with a work this brilliantly crafted, this remarkably consistent in suspense and narrative structure. I have nothing but utmost admiration for writer Choi Tae-kang. He’s going places, that’s for sure to me. PD Park Seung-woo too, has done stellar work here. His previous drama Kairos is also amongst my favourite shows and it’s great to see him continuing his streak of excellent thrillers. I hope this writer + PD duo collaborates again. We deserve more dramas of this calibre.

This was a fun few weeks, guys. The comment sections and the ensuing discourse were a blast to participate in. It really did feel like a tight-knit community hyperfixating over our niche little drama. I’m gonna miss it. Thank you, @missvictrix, for the wonderful recaps. They were just as part of the viewing experience for me as the drama itself and all the chatter in the comments. Adios y’all and all hail King Ji Sung!

It has been a delight watching Ji Sung act. It was cool seeing him taking on the two characters and making them different.

For the finale, I just don't know. Lots of it was compelling and nerve-wracking. Gosh, the silent view of the sea was bleak and heartbreaking. I still held on the hope that Soo Hyun survived. I think the finale wasn't as strong as the other episodes. There was plenty of strong acting. I'm unsettled when it comes to the story/ending though.

The show coming back full circle with the mansion again was a nice touch. Chuckled slightly seeing Dragon Lady Kwon there, waiting to greet Woo Shin, just like before. This time I can imagine Ms. Oh would not be as submissive previously. She was probably thrilled being free from Dragon Lady Kwon's command.

The body count was less than expected. Team A survived. Tae Sung. Dong Rim! Sun too. I did like how she got her revenge against her sister instead of doing a simple kill.

The good guys in their secret warehouse knew that there were moles in SIH so I wish they had been prepared for that. Did they think the 4 "trusted" members were that trustworthy?

Hye Soo remained mysterious to the end. Was her goal always Haesong? She wanted revenge for Min Jo. She wanted Chairman Kwon destroyed because she thought he was behind his death. Then Hyun Jo was her target when she learned the truth. But Sun was the actual killer and she is still alive. Perhaps because she has been a pawn and is still a useful weapon for now. Or taking over Haesong is the best, most satisfying revenge. Or she grew to enjoy her new level of power.

The twist at the end... Eh it's an open ending when there's no guarantee a second season is happening. For this drama, I wouldn't mind a second one as long as the writing and acting remained tight and stellar.

So both twins got the bioimplant GPS tracker in their left hand. I'm thinking it could be Soo Hyun who was holding the real adamas at the end. He injured his hand just like his brother and some way somehow, they wanted to fake his death so Team Leader Lee would no longer target him. By offering the (fake) adamas to Hye Soo, she keeps Lee alive to be punished by the law/courts/etc. But it's mind-boggling that Woo Shin can trust her? I wish they had shared a plan with the viewers. Maybe I'm used to Woo Shin having some plans or I want more of his deep thinking scenes lol. I think that's it. His plan and execution were missing from the last hour. I get that they needed time to show his grief though. *sighs* An open ending is just not a good way to end things.

It started real good, murder and the missing weapon, it was intense and on edge when watching, excited to watch the next episode every week to come crushing down in final 2 episodes. The moment, it reveal real adamas is in the toy but why as the twin asked, puting them in danger and why their bio father agree to steal it knowing he might die, does not makes sense. When the bio father was with them, all he did was watch, explain nothing much and why he is a thief in team A stealing for the chairman? The writer under-developed his/her the plot, kept focus on adamas, which is the title but fail to tell or show what so important about that other than $$$ or prestige. It also under-developed n wasted characters such as the bio father, as team a, writer can show his skill such as detecting the spy n turn things around that will be more interesting. And the plan, it screams failure, how can soo hyun alone went to the site to get evidence, how is he alone to carry them out, and the father who has experience did not say a word. Disappointed, yes, waste of time, not really, enjoy at least 12 episodes, good acting. Must find out who is the writer, so to avoid watching.
