Drama viewership ratings for the week of Oct. 3-9, 2022

Everything feels out of sorts this week, with three dramas beginning, one ending, and our ratings all across the board. First off, Little Women completed its 12-episode run breaking into double digits, so yahoo there! Then we have Bad Prosecutor, which premiered to a nice 5% by its second episode.

It’s ENA where the hurt is being felt — both Gaus Electronics and Love is for Suckers are barely making a dent in the numbers, and while it’s good to remember that Extraordinary Attorney Woo also started off tiny, it’s left to be seen if another drama will blow up to that extent. At any rate, it’s encouraging to see Love is for Suckers jump for its second episode.

In other news, One Dollar Lawyer continues to soar — geez, 14.9%?! — and JTBC’s The Empire also popped up to almost 4%.

I hope one dollar lawyers numbers are not about the murder storyline so now that’s done they will drop.

😭 Watching Love is for Suckers and seeing our PD's show having a 0.5% rating, and then the actual show gets 0,8%...
And then my Gaus gets 0,3% T.T
At least LIFS increased to 1,2%
That's 500,000 viewers! 🥲

My Golden Spoon deserves better.

And I know 3BSibilings isn't like the best weekender ever or wtv but damn.

> My Golden Spoon deserves better.

Does it though? The writer is so preoccupied trying to make Seungcheon the good guy, that everything else, including logic and other characters, are compromised.
There is a poverty, and then there is Golden Spoon poverty. I even made a joke that next episode, Russian's would demand Seungcheon's family to pay for Crimean bridge. That is just how the show feels now.

I do not think the writer is portraying Seung cheon as a good guy because Tae Young is coming across as more of a sympathetic hero. After the 1 month switch Tae Young is subconsciously showing more kindness and sensibility than SC who is aware of and has lived in the extremities of life. It is going to be a costly lesson for SC.

The problem with the drama is not with the characterisation, but rather the situational set-up for plot progression which is making the swapping rendundant and draggy.

I have a hard time deciding whether Tae Young comes as a more sympathetic hero because of plot or because the actor does a better job with the script.
In the webtoon, TY is the real hero, however, the writer gave parts of his dialogues/his loveline to SC. In addition, the new revelation about TY made me think that it was done so to make SC seem like a better option in comparison.

100% agreed on second paragraph. Even here, I feel like all that would have been avoided if only the writer didn't need SC absolutely forced to make the hard decision. If only Seungcheon swapped solely because his future seemed bleak/the pressure to maintain the scholarship was too heavy for him, we would not have that ridiculous debt storyline.

Ooo! I did not read the webtoon/comic, but reading your reply makes me think they are on the path to ruining YSJ's character. Although, he is billed as the hero, making him an anti-hero would not have made him any less likeable or the drama any less enjoyable.

I agree with the debt plot because it is making SC's mom and dad look like selfish people who keep burdening their kids and making them miserable.

"Russian's would demand Seungcheon's family to pay for Crimean bridge. That is just how the show feels now."😂😂😂

Okay, I just saw episode 5 (I commented before watching last week's episodes because I have faith in the writer lol), and it felt a little different from the others that's true.

A lot of things happened but I don't think the writer is trying to make Seung Cheon look like a good guy.

For me it feels more like they're trying to develop other subplots (Ye Jin) but they don't know how to make it without getting SC involved (or they're trying to get him involved in everything for no reason, idk).

Nam's show with that rating - deserve that? what does it have to show for? heroine in pink suit!!?
even edgy teen prosecutor is too many viewers for its meager storyline. Washed out season - better to wait for December shows now.

Yikes! Three Brave Siblings' numbers are awfully low for a KBS weekender. There are a lot of issues with it though. Will the next weekender be all out makjang?

I absolutely love Gaus Electronics, but it's on the wrong nights and wrong platform.

I hope Love is For Suckers rises, but I think these kind of numbers will be the norm for ENA. It's a shame because they've had some good dramas. I actually liked Never Give Up more than Extraordinary Attorney Woo.

I would like to think that we will see numbers rise for THREE BOLD SIBLINGS now that we are actually beginning to see them interact with each other. Too much time has been spent on the lead characters until now and an overly fragmented story has caused the numbers to drop. But when I compare these numbers to what we saw last year with YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN, which served up loads of makjang nonsense, I fully appreciate you concern.

It was a big mistake to spend so much time on the leads. I think the numbers will settle in the 20 percent range eventually. I think KBS really needs to work on casting for the next weekender.

I agree. Part of the strength of YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN was the cast- they had indeed taken grea t care with that.

You are also rught that too much time is being taken with the leads- that pacing of their story would be more consistent with a sixteen episode romcom, complete with a second lead character- and this is a big mistake, a true misallocation of time.

Having just finished Never Give Up, I agree. I also enjoyed it more than EAW, not least because it didn't fall apart in the last third. I wish it had gotten more attention.

Please, more love for Love is For Suckers. How are they not watching this wonderful piece of art?
Double Digits for Little Women's finale. Yay! Well after that ep 11 ending, I knew they were going to tune in for Sunday's.
What's up with ENA? This shows deserve better.

The weekender THREE BOLD SIBLINGS are actually dropping overall. This is a shame as the story is gradually becoming more coherent.

GAUS ELECTRONICS is not getting the love it deserves but ONE DOLLAR LAWYER is. Too many shows packed onto the weekend.

LOVE IS FOR SUCKERS should also be doing better.

The Monday-Tuesday viewership is really lagging behind. Even with Law Cafe‘s dismal quality, I could see it doing a lot better on the weekend. Oh well, I suppose 6% ain’t nothing to laugh at these days.

I… don’t get the increased ratings for Bad Prosecutor. No offense meant towards anybody enjoying it, but not even the power of a good D.O performance can cover for that script. Yeesh.

Not surprised about Love in Contract. Go Kyung-pyo is a hoot as Ji-ho, but that show is a mess in a thousand different kind of ways.

I wish The Golden Spoon was doing better. The show is surprisingly good (not flawless, obviously) and I think the people not watching it are missing out.

One Dollar Lawyer, holy shit. I’m happy for Namgoong Min and his gorgeously eccentric suits. Not even being sarcastic because the show can be quite fun to breeze through. It’s good to see that there’s still an actor in the industry who can consistently bring high ratings.

Now for the ENA siblings, yikes. Extraordinary Attorney Woo was like a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon so I don’t expect anything to hit those stratospheres, but both Gaus and Love Is for Suckers is doing abysmally. Tbh, as much as it pains me to say this about Kwak Dong-yeon-lead show, I get the low ratings for Gaus. Comedy can be an incredibly subjective thing and the show’s unique brand of bizarre humour is not exactly appealing to a broad audience. As in, I like the show but I’m not sure I’d sit down in front of the TV with my family to watch it - a key determinator in whether a weekend prime time drama is successful. As for the other show, I have more hope for Love Is for Suckers. It’s already a good sign that ratings increased within week one and broke the 1% barrier. I don’t expect it to be a hit per say, but I can see it doing well. Maybe aiming for a solid 4-5%? In an ideal world, it’d be doing better but given the time slot, the genre, the leads, and the channel… I’m trying to be realistic.

What the hell is going on with Three Bold Siblings? I would hate to see KBS take this as a sign to return to more makjang-y fare àla Young Lady and Gentleman.

The new weekender THREE BOLD SIBLINGS is suffering from a lack of balance: Far too much time has been devoted to the story of the two leads, far too little to the heir families and the two younger siblings. The pace of their story, and early inclusion of a sort of second ML character, match what we would usually see in a sixteen-episode rom-com.

Not only that, but the writer is pulling punches with the love lives of the other two siblings. It turns out that cheating by our middle sibling's fiance is not that big of a deal to him: He was only going to marry her to please his mom so dumping her instead is actually simply an act of common sense which he can do without any sense of devastation. Where is the angst and the need for his family to rally around him and support him in his time of need? Answer: It is simply not necessary in this case. Instead, our brother is acting with about the same level of emotion as deciding to change his socks.

At least the little sister's coming breakup will be a major disappointment to her. But even she was looking for a marriage as a pragmatic life decision.

Do not get me wrong, I could see how it is possible that these views of our younger siblings's situations could be the starting points for two great stories but at this point in the drama they simply lack any emotional punch as far as the audience is concerned.

If you are simply running a standard romcom at this point why would anyone expect weekender ratings?

I too worry that the wrong lessons will be learned. YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN may have been a ratings hit but plot wise went completely off the rails. What really old the show was a very solid performance by the ML and a fabulous performance by Lee Sehee as the FL. It was indeed far too makjangy (two amnesia arcs is at least one too many) and that actually reduced the dramatic quality of the show. But makjang sells and that could be the lesson that is mis-learned here.

Usually, you'll get multiple potential couples to look forward to. Like are those 2 other siblings going to make up with their cheating partners? The ML's second-cousins feel too young and the ML's sister is thoroughly too mean to be paired up with the FL's younger bro, who is like 1 out of only 3 characters that I find likable in the drama (and the male lead is not one of those 3).

Good point about potential partners. I do not see reconciliation as likely so, either the writer needs to bring in additional characters or we get some unlikely pairings. For the youngest sibling perhaps she gets to meet the "second lead" character who is presently mooning over the FL. For the brother- who knows? We are only six episodes in so one new character could be added now, with room left in cast by the departure of his cheating ex.

Those are some glaring weaknesses for a weekender, just as you described. It’s the wider family ensemble and multiple intertwining storylines consisting of both PG love stories and heartwarming family drama that really make a weekender what it is. What you’re describing is more prime-time material and I get why that doesn’t appeal to this audience. Why watch this when you could get this same material, but much better writing and budget, from other shows?

I guess Gaus is on ENA because no other station will pick it up. I like Gaus, but I agree that its humor doesn't lead to mass appeal. It feels like a web series.

LfS is decent for a romcom that's filled with every cliché there is.

I missed Cheer up's premiere, off to the dark side of the net!

a reality check for ENA. it's showing that extraordinary woo brought the ratings but not the channel's audience. now they're back to what they usually are? I feel bad for the staff involved, but these dramas started production before EAW hit it big so everyone involved knew to expect low ratings bcs it's not a big channel at all.

not watching this new weekender, but I thought KBS was in hot waters with its beautiful you ratings but this one looks worse.
