Casting news for MBC’s fantasy drama Kkokdu’s Season

MBC’s upcoming fantasy drama Kkokdu’s Season marks the return of Kim Jung-hyun (Mr. Queen) to our screens, and the premise already seems like an intriguing one. Kim Jung-hyun plays the titular Kkokdu, a grim reaper who makes his way to the mortal realm after every 99 years of vacation time.

Somehow, he’s managed to anger the Creator, which means he’s saddled with double the work. In the underworld, Kkokdu is in charge of corralling resentful souls, whereas in the overworld, he’s tasked with tracking down immoral “human trash” and murdering them. Whoa there.

In order to carry out such an extreme job, Kkokdu possesses the human Do Jin-woo, which is how he meets our heroine. Played by Im Soo-hyang (Doctor Lawyer), her name is Han Gye-jeol, which means “one season.” The drama’s title is a little on the nose there, huh? Having graduated from the lowest-ranking medical school in the country, Gye-jeol is a doctor, albeit not a very proud one. That’s where Jin-woo comes in — he’s the only one who hears her out and takes her side.

Rounding out the main cast, we have Ahn Woo-yeon (Young Lady and Gentleman) as Han Cheol, a diligent detective with top-grade intuition. Dasom (Dramaworld) plays Tae Jung-won, the stellar doctor who never achieves anything less than first place. In addition, we also have an extended Mr. Queen reunion in the form of Cha Chung-hwa (Why Her?) and Kim In-kwon (Cleaning Up) as half-gods.

Regrettably, actor Lee Ji-han (Today Was Another Nam Hyun Day) lost his life in the Itaewon crowd crush tragedy. The role of Gye-jeol’s ex-boyfriend has since been filled by Lee Jung-joon (Cheer Up!).

Directed by Baek Soo-chan (Alice) and Kim Ji-hoon (Please Check Out The Event), with scripts written by Kang Yi-heon and Heo Joon-woo (Less Than Evil), Kkokdu’s Season will premiere on MBC in 2023.

Nothing in this drama appeals to me whether the directors (Alice and Please Check Out The Even were both very bad), the story or the casting...

I'm trying to remember how I felt about Alice's directing but it's all kind of messed up with the general awful. These screenwriters only have one drama under the belt as well.

Also, doesn't this premise sound like Black? Between that and Alice, this whole thing seems like a PTSD trigger.

Kim Jung-hyun is so good, I really want him to have a successful, scandal free drama for once.

Personally, I don't specially like Kim Jung-Hyun. He always was the least interesting part of the drama I watched with him for me (School 2017, Welcome to Waikiki, Crash Landing on You, Mr. Queen).

You really need to see his performance in Time
Except - that would involve watching Time
I do not recommend watching Time

Yeah, no thank you.

The whole love/slavery relationship behind the scene, the fact I'm not a fan of Seohyun neither, they had to change the story don't really me want to waste my time with this drama :p

I feel the same. I do not think his acting is a problem, but he lacks a strong onscreen presence.

So sad to be reminded how many died needlessly in one fun event. I guess it was inevitable that it would effect the spectrum of the population including someone famous. So sad for his family and what a wake up call for the rest of the cast about how tomorrow is not guaranteed for any of us when they turned up to work and he was no longer there.

I will try this. I really like KJH dramas, I can take or leave ISH dramas though.

oh I like the leads. Hoping for a good story. Pleas downplay the killing the human trash stuff though. We shall see how they choose to portray the story.

I'm very happy that Kim Jung-hyun will be back in dramaland, and his role sounds interesting, but I'm not wild about his co-star, and the creative team is questionable. Oh well. At least he's working again.

All of this! I'm glad KJH is back, and the premise sounds mildly intriguing, but I still have a bad taste in my mouth from ISH's turn in Woori. I'll probably wait a few episodes to see what beanies think before making a decision. It's at least theoretically possible for PDs and writers to learn and improve, right?

Absolutely! There have definitely been times when I heard about a specific creative team and inwardly wrote off the drama before even watching. But then it pleasantly surprised me. I'm hoping exactly that happens this time around.
