News bites: November 2, 2022

  • Lee Young-ae (Inspector Koo) is on the casting table for a new series called Maestra. Adapted from a French production by the same title, the drama is centered around our heroine’s journey as she learns to overcome her challenges as an orchestra conductor. Still in the planning stages, filming is set to begin next year once the cast has been finalized. [YTN]

  • After favorable reviews during its viewing at the Busan Film Festival, Highway Family released in theaters today and I would love to see this cast together in a drama like yesterday. Starring Ra Mi-ran (Dr. Park’s Clinic), Jung Il-woo (Good Job), and Kim Seul-gi (The Law Cafe), the story explores what it means to be human as we follow a nomadic family who camps off of highway rest stops. [SpoTV News]

  • Kim Ji-eun (One Dollar Lawyer) will be joining Na In-woo (Jinxed at First) in a new crime-mystery that takes place in a secluded countryside. Titled I Have Waited a Long Time for You, PD Han Chul-soo (Again My Life) is attached to direct, and this will be his second time working with Kim Ji-eun. [Osen]
  • SBS’s Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3 announced their supporting lineup, which includes some familiar faces from our ragtag hospital team: Kim Joo-hun (Mouse), Jin Kyung (Love in Contract), Jung Ji-ahn (Alchemy of Souls), and Im Won-hee (Crazy Love) among others. New faces include Lee Shin-young (Rookie Cops) and Lee Hong-nae (Inspector Koo). Filming for this third season is aiming to start in the new year. [Osen (1), (2)]

  • A new teaser has dropped for the 2022 season of KBS’s Drama Specials program, which will be launching this month on November 16. Providing a platform for rookie directors and writers to spread their wings, the new season will feature eight short dramas and two films. The starring cast – across the many projects – includes Cha Hak-yeon (Bad and Crazy), Shin Eun-soo (A Model Family), Han Ji-eun (Stock Struck), and Joo Jong-hyuk (Extraordinary Attorney Woo) among others. [KBS]
  • Over on tvN, a new highlights teaser has been released for the upcoming Behind Every Star. Starring Lee Seo-jin (Dr. Park’s Clinic), Kwak Sun-young (Inspector Koo), Seo Hyun-woo (Adamas), and Joo Hyun-young (Extraordinary Attorney Woo), the comedy premieres in just a few days on November 7. [News]
  • More character stills have come out for MBC’s The Forbidden Marriage and there’s no shortage of pretty from Kim Young-dae (Shooting Stars), Kim Woo-seok (Military Prosecutor Doberman), and Kim Min-joo. The also beautiful Park Joo-hyun (Love All Play) co-stars in this sageuk rom-com, which will be coming to our screens next month on December 9. [MBC (1), (2), (3)]

I spy a new purple hanbok to add to my collection. Excellent.

Whoever is responsible for costuming on MBC’s THE FORBIDDEN MARRIAGE is doing great.

So many news tidbits that are interesting to me for different reasons. LYA looks simply elegant. It’s difficult -if not impossible, to look that elegant if one is not.

The movie led by Ramiran looks fun. Kim Seul-gi is always charming and the poster looks like something light and heartwarming.

The news of Kim Young-dae comes as a surprise for me. He was lovely in Sh**ting Stars (with that bad-boy-looking face), and I’m surprised to see how much I’m anticipating seeing him in this gorgeous-wardrobe sageuk. The costume look amazingly good. Considering my sageuk allergy, this one is definitely a maybe.

I'm in the same boat for Forbidden Marriage. Love the hanbok, love the cast, but I break out in hives at the sight of a gat. I wonder if I could just focus intently on KYD's eyebrows and ignore everything above them?

😂 I think I am like that, too, at the sight of a gat. I might be able to endure it if I focus hard enough on his face. His whole face looks adorable.

All the more gats for me then~!
I will protect them from this most egregious gat slander, tsk tsk 🤭🤭🤭

😅 Yes, you can have all the gats! The wardrobe here looks fabulous. With them mostly in light colors, I predict that the show won’t be too serious in the tone. Something that is a plus for me.

That's so interesting! To me, men's hairstyles/headgear in sageuks are often less offensive than those set in modern times. I sometimes think men look prettier in top knots/headbands/gats because at least then their hair is out of their eyes and you can see what are usually pretty fantastic eyebrows. Plus, there is almost no chance of a bowl cut, mullet, or the dreaded hybrid of the two.

The new LYA drama sounds a lot like Cate Blanchett's newest masterpiece film : TAR. Hopefully this also can be as good.

Also LYA : how can someone looked THAT gorgeous in her 50s?

Sometimes, I would like they don't give news of the drama so soon... The wait can be long! Just one trailer when the drama is ready to be released and the date/network and voilà!

I think I will avoid the number 3, I don't trust Na In-Woo's choices of dramas and I don't specially like Kim Ji-Eun's acting.

I'm very exciting to watch the KBS special dramas, they often make some gems. The last year, I really liked The Palace with Kim Sae-Ron and Jung Da-Eun.

I'm not convinced by Kim Young-dae look as a King. He looks like they gave him clothes too big for him, like he was eaten by them, and not like he's the King.

Romantic Doctor Kim Season 3...Okay. Voice has 4 seasons, Save me has 3. Well this is an avenue to be amongst those who've seen RDK.

Na In-woo and Kim Ji-eun. I hope this project is good. I'm not a fan of Na In-woo's projects since Mr. Queen and River.

6. It's just 5 days away☺️

The Forbidden Marriage is packed with fine faces. Those colorful dresses. Hmmmm.

Can I add another news bite? Well maybe not a bite, a possible crumb. Writer Park Kyung-su's new drama is reported to be about politics, working title "Whirlwind," with Kim Hee-ae and movie actor Sol Kyung-gu. She's a deputy prime minister and he's the prime minister who becomes an acting president.

Has Sol Kyung-gu ever done a drama?

He started in dramas before he became a big star in Chungmuro.
It’s always a treat to see movie veterans return to the small screen.

I thought Han Suk-kyu was attached to this project? I was excited for a third time reunion with Kim Hee-ae.

I love Romantic Doctor Kim, so will toon in.

I'll try Forbidden marriage, KYD has really grown on me, so this can be fun.

I am also super hopeful for Behind the stars.

I didn't realize forbidden marriage was turning into a drama lol. Loved that webtoon. I'm guessing kim min joo is just a cameo/special appearance then? Wary of kim young dae but somehow i do like him despite the questionable acting chops so we'll see. He suits the role looks-wise but idk if he has the gravitas to play a king, even if it's just a fluff rom-com. But then again, I'm so starved for sageuks i'll watch anything with traditional garb at this point lol.

Thanks for mentioning the source material! Haven't read a good webtoon in a while. And I agree with the sageuk starvation, i've resorted to rewatching and catching up with the few that slipped through my radar.
