[Drama chat] Oops, I dropped a drama (or twelve)

Our 2022 Year in Review festivities have begun, so we thought it would be fun if our Drama Chat space followed suit. And you know, with the Bean Count around the corner, it seemed like a good time to talk about BING: beans I’m not getting.

As per the Dramabeans tradition, you get an imaginary “bean” for every drama you watch in the year, which is the reasoning behind the often-employed explanation for sticking it out through a non-enjoyable drama – viz., I did it for the bean. But maybe even more interesting than the dramas you watched are the dramas you dropped, bean be damned. And that’s what this post is for.

For me, I think this was a record year from dropping beans dramas. That’s right, the days of suffering through shows I’m not loving are over. Whether I dropped a show because it just wasn’t my speed (Our Blues), because it was too poorly written (Cafe Minamdang), because it was too gory (All of Us Are Dead), or because I meant to finish it but ran out of hours in the day (Good Job, I’m sorry!) — I have a 2022 compost heap of unfinished dramas.

What dramas did you drop this year and why?

Let the chatting begin!

2022 wasn't a great year for K-Drama for me personally. I think I may have broken my own record in number of dramas dropped, so I'll stick to 2022 dramas for the sake of brevity (it's still a lot). And I'll skip the ones where I watched an episode to get a feel for them, and plan to come back later when they suit my current mood better.

Gaus Electronics : Barely got through the first episode. I remember laughing at some scenes but the workplace bullying and cartoonish violence put me off completely. I heard it gets better but, the opener just left too sour a taste in my mouth.

Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist: I thought this was alright. The female lead was cool and the cases were interesting but the tonal shifts were awkward and the background palace politics were dull and felt unnecessary. Less an intentional drop and more, I forgot about it? Would've circled back but learned a 2nd season was coming (why?) and I'm not invested enough to watch that much more of it.

Extraordinary Attorney Woo: Promising start, and I enjoyed the quirky vibe at first, but it was more a drama about an autistic character than the story of a woman who happened to be autistic and it started feeling like a PSA. As someone on the spectrum I appreciate the attempt, and I did like the actress and some of the side characters, but... It just rubbed me wrong. Tired of us always being put the 'idiot savant' cliché box. Plus I wasn't digging the romance. The male lead was too 'generic good guy' and I was bored in their scenes together.

Military Prosecutor Doberman: Another 'I liked it but forgot about it, but didn't like it enough to come back' drama. The concept was neat and the leads were interesting, but the tone didn't land for me. I wanted to be into it but somehow wasn't.

Business Proposal: Loved it at the beginning, but got bored around the time the couples got together. Put it on hold because I was watching other dramas I liked more, but heard it went downhill near the end so I didn't bother to continue.

Grid: I think I only watched one or two episodes of this one? The set up was really intriguing but it was a bit heavy for what I was in the mood for (lots of work-related stress at the time) so I put it on hold for later. But then I read the ending was disappointing and left viewers frustrated so I decided to skip it.

Looking back, I apparently finished only 4 dramas this year that were actually from 2022? I rarely live watch, but I'll lurk in the recap comments to see how it's going and a lot of the ones on my to-watch list either had terrible endings, went downhill somewhere in he middle, or were just disappointing in some way or another. There's some upcoming dramas I'm really excited for though, so fingers crossed for 2023!

My dropped list this year is really short, just one:
Bulgasal: Immortal Souls

The big list is the dramas I had planned to watch, but never did.

I watched that one through to the end and I think you were right to drop it!

I just posted my bean count, but I guess I want to keep track of my dropped dramas too. XD

Doctor Lawyer - dropped after EP 10
Tomorrow - dropped after EP 12

Ugh so close~! I have a completist mindset most of the time so part of me wanted to finish these so bad, but the bigger part has moved on.

I fell behind DL when I was busy with other things or shows. Then I skimmed reviews and it seemed like it turned out average so I didn't feel like catching up anymore.

Tomorrow... started off interesting, but then just lacked something. The snippets of the main female lead's storyline/mystery were dragged out.

I'm behind on Golden Spoon (among others), but gosh darnit, I'm gonna finish it!

I don't participate in the bean count, so I don't try too hard to finish if something more interesting comes up in front of me.

Dramas that I've watched half or more.

Good Job - I think I'm like an episode or half an episode away from finishing.
Cafe Minamdang - I'm like 2 episodes away from finishing this.
Crazy Love
Kiss Sixth Sense
Love in Contract

The following dramas, I put in the category of previewing 1-4 episodes and ending up not continuing...
Our Blues
Behind Every Star
Thirty Nine
It's Beautiful Now

After seeing the list of dramas mentioned, I realized that I put on a few dramas that I never watched but I just had it on in the background haha

- Snowdrop
- My Name
- Itaewon Class
- Cinderella and the Four Knights (this one might definitely be considered a dropped one haha)
- Bulgasal: Immortal Souls
- Tomorrow
- The Bride of Haebak (this might be considered dropped too cause I think I looked at like 5 minutes worth and then turned it off. It wasn't even background noise)
- Glitch

I hesitate to admit that I dropped Twenty-Five Twenty-One. I was really enjoying it right up until the lead characters became a couple, but after that I lost interest. I don't know why!

Others I dropped:
Behind Every Star
Gaus Electronics
Our Blues
Law Cafe (I am not sure I made it through the first episode!)
Once Upon a Small Town

Probably some others too!
I also finished some that I *should* have dropped. But that's a different story.

I realized I cannot stand an annoying high school kid character in shows. Unfortunately, they are ubiquitous in K-dramas so I end up not finishing most of them. I also drop good ones because I want to see it with a family member, then we never find time to watch it together. On the other hand I get done tons of work :).

Same, I've never been dropping that many drama. I only got 8 beans.

Those are the drama I was afraid of the ending or bore by the obvious or uneventful ending so I dropped them... but maybe I should I kept watching for the bean:
- Twenty Five Twenty One (afraid of what I read. I loved that drama, I'm so sad they weren't able to grow together and kept supporting each other. Also, after the obstacles they overcame I don't believe one second the ending. I can't or I wont believe ever that you can live through obstacles as frieds and couple and then decide that somewhere else there is something more powerful awaiting for you. I do believe in the stress of mental illness creating a strain on a relationship tho. )
- Forecasting Love and Weather (story was becoming annoying)
- Thirty-Nine (I came to see 3 friends, but all I saw was a 3rd wheel and Song Ye Jin love life... disappointing)
- Business Proposal (boring? too anime"esque")
Military Prosecutor Doberman (ending was pretty obvious)
-Tomorrow (I think I just got bored and I didnt finished it - but I can't remember if I did or did not finish it)

And those are the drama, I dropped after 2 to 8 ep:
- Bad and Crazy (When I saw he had bipolar disorder, it felt Meh and ... too much shouting/screaming)
- Ghost Doctor (Boring? UEE was too soft, too much crying and shouting and quarel btw family is something we have seen too many times)
- Dr. Park’s Clinic ( boring? humor was stale too)
Rookie Cops (I just wasn't invested anymore, but I'm keeping a good memory of that one)
- Our Blues (recap and comments got me disapointed before starting it... and the first episodes made me agree to not give him too much time. It was slow, too slow, I wasn't ready for that drama)
- Love All Play (I liked it.. I have no clue why I dropped it, afraid?)
The Killer’s Shopping List (uhm... weird?)
The Sound of Magic (... I think I strted it :/)
Welcome to Wedding Hell ( I really wanted to like it, but nothing kept me engaged, I reallly really wanted to like it, maybe I will try again... but the story was really plain, felt like I already watched it)
Kiss Sixth Sense (I really enjoyed the first 6 / 8 episode, but again it felt like the 2nd part was going to be boring )
Doctor Lawyer (well, what can I say, again I went full in but left full "out", why are the story always the same, the story in itself was "already done, already seen", nothing kept me watching, too much angst, corruption. Forest of secret season 1 was perfect why do you want to do the same but with medecine as a back ground. I could have been just perfect to see the background of the debate and lawsuit in medecine, to see it from the doctor, the hospital, the pation point of view)
Yumi’s Cells 2 (where were the "emotions"? I missed them!! why did Woong come back for two full epidode?, that was my cue to drop the drama)
Alchemy of Souls (my bad, I left midway,I didn't feel engaged enough to come back to it.)
Money...

I probably dropped over 90% of any shows I started. The last one was "Somebody" because the vibe of That Cat Scene in the first episode just wasn't my thing and I couldn't be bothered to continue. The only show I (almost) regret dropping is "Link: Eat, Love, Kill" because I actually enjoyed it and didn't mean to drop it. Just never managed to finish it and now it's been too long to simply pick it up again.

My first ever dramabeans comment... so here goes the list of the dramas I dropped this year:

25 21 - I love Kim Tae Ri but the ML can't act

Big Mouth - just ridiculous

Extraordinary Attorney Woo - was looking forward to this as I love mental health plots but it rubbed me the wrong way. I know it is almost everyone's favourite

Narco Saints - dropped after episode 1

Love in Contract - distracted by PMY's new face

Business Proposal - cringy cheesiness

Behind Every Star - was excited as I enjoyed Ten Percent (the British adaptation, fab cameos). Dropped the k version after one episode sadly

Glitch - my biggest disappointment. Too hyped but it was so boring. I must say Nana is a GODDESS

Interesting subject. I am the kind of viewer who likes to finish a Kdrama that I started, however, lately I have dropped several after just a few episodes. Also, I have really followed the reviews and rankings before I begin a new show. Offically dropped:

Gaus Electronics - just couldn't get into the humor
Love is for Suckers
Our Blues (I made it through it's "sister drama" My Liberation Notes
Cafe Minamdang
Money Heist Korea
Alchemy of Souls - fantasy a favorite genre but love Lee Jae Wook

Forced myself to finish:
The Sound of Magic
25/21 - hated the ending
Snowdrop - was that this year?
Tracer - was that this year? May go back to this one.

Not sure if I'm ready to commit to Reborn Rich yet.....

I consider a drama dropped only if i didnt continue after 2 or more episodes..watching a first episode or part of it is like a preview to see if i’d like it. Most times i don’t continue because of timing issues, not the drama’s fault. One such case is Sell Your Haunted House. I dropped My Blues cos it wasn’t the breezy summer story i expected..then it got my interest again after i read some Beanies comments but i still havent picked it up again..

I tend to be a finisher, so I don't even bother starting dubious ones. However, the two main ones I dropped last year were Secret House and Gold Mask. I started them as background tv when I started because of the great cast in both, but just thinking about restarting them is making me exhausted. It's bad enough not having a real winter this year that I can't be bothered with bad narratives no matter how great the cast.
