News bites: December 14, 2022

  • Park Eun-bin (Extraordinary Attorney Woo) is currently in talks for Desert Island Diva (roughly translated), a Cast Away-esque story that has our aspiring singer heroine finally being found after 15 years lost on a deserted island. The rom-com marks the newest collaboration by PD Oh Choong-hwan (Big Mouth) and writer Park Hye-ryun (Pinnochio), who worked together twice before on Start-Up and While You Were Sleeping. Filming is set to begin once casting has been finalized. [Sports Chosun]

  • The first poster has arrived for Brain Cooperation and our brain scientist hero Jung Yong-hwa (Sell Your Haunted House) is here to save his swooning damsel Cha Tae-hyun (Police University). Written by Park Kyung-sun with PD Lee Jin-seo (Revolutionary Sisters) and PD Gu Sung-joon co-directing, the investigative comedy will be setting off the new year with a January 2 premiere. [KBS]

  • Netflix confirmed the college romance Doona! (previously The Girl Downstairs) in their upcoming lineup, starring Suzy (Anna) and Yang Se-jong (My Country: The New Age) in his first post-army project. Directed by PD Lee Jung-hyo (Crash Landing on You) with scripts by Jang Yoo-ha, the webtoon adaptation follows a retired idol as she starts life anew by going back to school and finding love with one of her housemates. [Sports Chosun]
  • The office romance Race, on the other hand, has been picked up by Disney+, headlined by Lee Yeon-hee (Welcome to Wedding Hell ), Hong Jong-hyun (Stock Struck), Moon Sori (On the Verge of Insanity), and Yunho (Meloholic). Slated to air in the early half of 2023, production is being led by writer Kim Ru-ri (Hyena) and PD Lee Dong-yoon (Sunbae, Don’t Put on that Lipstick). [News1]

  • Continuing to explore the horizons outside of South Korea, Shim Eun-kyung (Money Game) confirmed joining the cast of Japanese drama I Should Have Said 1 Million Times (Hyakuman Kai Ieba Yokatta) in the part of neurosurgeon Song Ha-young. The supernatural mystery-romance will be releasing on TBS in January 2023. [News1]
  • Lee Jung-eun (Yonder) crossed the borders as well, appearing in the first episode of Apple TV’s Little America (Season 2), which aired last week on December 9. It’s another (deservedly) busy year for actor Lee, who will soon be returning to our screens in tvN’s Missing: The Other Side 2 in addition to the Netflix series Daily Dose of Sunshine. [News1]
  • New character stills and a poster have been released for SBS’s Payback (previously Law Money), featuring Lee Seon-kyun (Dr. Brain) in a mullet that my eyes regret seeing and a steely Moon Chae-won (Flower of Evil). The legal revenge drama premieres next month on January 6 with scripts penned by Kim Won-seok (Man to Man) and filmmaker Lee Won-tae (The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil) at the helm. Haha the male lead hasn’t been announced yet… who knows, it might be Lee Jong Suk (as a geeeeenius detective / talent manager who finds her after the 15 years - and don’t forget they most definitely have a childhood connection).

After Extraordinary I'll watch anything with Park Eun-bin. Or at least start it.

Suzy as retired idol going back to school? Well, the "idol" part should be fine.

Oh God! The mullet 😱😱😱

Mullet hairstyle is tricky to pull off ... so far on many Kdramas i've watched only Lee Je-Hoon looks oozing hot with it (sorry, Yoo In Soo ...)

Try watching her old sageuks too. She was always good, and I'm glad she is gaining more fans.
I hope she doesn't accept dramas from famous writers just because they suddenly want her. "Extraordinary Woo" was written by a new/unknown writer, but it brought out the best in her.

I am also worried about this pairing of director/writer with her. It doesn’t feel like a stylistic fit.

Lee Sun-kyun's mullet here is best friends with Park Sung-hoon's mullet in The Glory stills. They could even be brothers!

And there's Minho's mullet in the stills for The Fabulous.

Once is happenstance.
Twice is coincidence.
Three times is enemy action a really unfortunate mini-trend that I pray does not catch on.

And considering Lee Je-hoon's mullet in Move to Heaven last year, it looks like a Mullet Extended Universe is brewing!

As someone who reached his peak (and his ability to grow a mullet) in the 1980s, I have to say I don't think you are appreciating the rich possibilities of the mullet as an expression of dynamic masculinity. Doona and Race (If it can be found) sound promising and Desert Island diva is a tentative possibility.

The hairstyle comments always make me laugh especially now I have seen the best shock response to a proposal ever, leading to the best wedding photo hairstyle. If you have seen the Japanese romance drama First Love you will know what I mean 😊

our aspiring singer heroine finally being found after 15 years lost on a deserted island

Um... was she an aspiring singer before being stranded on the island? How old does this make her? Or did she become one during? The description is funny.

People become idols so early in Korea, I thought this probably made her ~30, no? But I agree, it would be more funny if she started aspiring to be a singer once she was stranded!

Desert Island Diva The writer tends to forget her FL to make the ML shine, so I really hope she won't in this one.

Doona! I'm really happy with YSJ's return on my screen, less with Suzy as the FL...

Race I like the PD, he was cute on the She Would Never Know's BTS. But sadly, I'm not really interested by the casting.

Payback The mullet haircut should be forbidden! I can accept it only on Gargoyles' Goliath!

Brain Cooperation seems like a truly wild premise, but this poster makes me more interested in it than I was before. Well played.

Thank you @tccolb for using both words “desert” and “deserted” to describe the island. I always think that deserted must be correct but have been sloppily shortened by usage to desert. Doesn’t it seem unlikely that an island in a (assuming, tropical) ocean would also be a desert? Wouldn’t it be more like a rain forest? Well, these are the weird things I think about 🏝

I had the same thought process lol, but apparently it's sort of interchangeable - at least according to Google/Wikipedia. 🤷‍♀️ I also learned there is a Mount Desert Island in Maine, lol.

It has recently come to my attention that Park Eun-bin started acting at age 6 (in 1998). She clearly has more experience than her peers. She is now at the point of her career to pick and choose roles that she wants to do.

My thoughts:

1. Ooh Desert Island Diva actually sounds kinda fun

2. Doona! I read some of that webtoon I think. ... Unfortunately, I can't say I'm a huge fan of Suzy so we'll see.

3. ... the only man who I will never regret seeing in a Mullet is McGyver. Unfortunately, Lee Seon-kyun is not McGyver.

Fortunately, the mullet is nowhere to be seen in the first teaser released yesterday. Lots of different hairdos, but no mullet

On which legal sites can one watch SBS dramas nowadays?

Streaming sites don't normally have all of one network's shows, so it depends on what drama you want. Streaming services sometimes have partners with production companies but even then it doesn't guarantee they get all of those shows. I'd say in my region (North America) most of the public broadcasters' dramas are on Viki and/or Kocowa, but definitely not all.

Have SBS dramas landed on Netflix often? I am specifically looking for a platform to watch Payback in North America.

Sometimes! Recently, for example, Netflix had Business Proposal, Our Beloved Summer, and Racket Boys. Hopefully Payback will make it there, too!
