[Drama chat] That one drama from 2022 that you missed

After all the Year in Review festivities, I’m sure we all have a stack of recommended or highly referred to dramas to add to our watch lists. But what’s that one drama that was either super big, super popular, or super loved that you painfully and obviously missed?

For me, it’s… Extraordinary Attorney Woo. Yeah, despite this drama smashing records and being universally adored, I didn’t watch it when it was on, and I still haven’t gotten a chance to binge it. But, rather than feel apologetic (or completely embarrassed), I’m taking it as a final parting gift from 2022.

What’s that one drama from 2022 that you missed?

Let the chatting begin!

The two popular dramas I missed were Through the Darkness & Little Women

The two hidden gems I missed were
Glitch & Unicorn

One that want to watch personally
The Fabulous

Recipe For Farewell technically ended this year so it would count as 2023 drama but I’m seeing some really positive reviews and want to check it out

Adamas. Because of one of the cast member. (Please don't take his name in the comments, I like to ignore his existence because dramaland can clearly not).
It looked like a show that I would certainly enjoy. And there were TWO Ji Sung!!!
Under the Queen's Umbrella is a close second but in the category of "I dropped it early on when it wasn't that appealing and then everyone started raving about it".
When you're live watching shows it's really hard to catch up. Once a certain number of episodes are done, I will probably never catch up to a show.

I am looking aside every time that actor is in a drama, Wapz, so I fee you deep. I am on episode 11 of Adamas and I love almost everything about it. Hoping you give a chance to the drama, although I totally feel you.

As for UTQU, I also want to watch, but I became sageuk drained in 2021, and only watched Bloody Heart and it was so good, I didn’t want to try anything else.

I know, I kept comparing UTQU to Bloody Heart. Though the praises for it were sky high, it will be probably better watched some other time.

I have the same problem. When I live watch and keep up with the schedule I can finish it. Once I accumulate episodes it’s hard to catch up. Like I have 4 episodes of Cheer up to mark it complete but I will probably never get to it.

Adamas. Such a bummer. I loved the drama to bits inspite of that.
Ji Sung is truly amazing here. But, yeah, I hear you.

I couldn’t make it last year to finishing Tracer, The Good detective 2, Adamas and Never give up, but I hope I can finish them in January. Good intentions for the New Year.

I also left behind some dramas that I hope I will watch this year like Kiss sixth sense ot Anna.

Maybe I am being a bit too ambitious?

I really wanted to watch Anna but by the time i found it, I was already watching some stuff and never quite got round to it again.

Everything I wanted to watch I started and dropped if it turned into something I did not like or I delayed starting it and read the recaps and chose not to start it.
Recipe for Farewell is my one regret due to availability angst. I am hopeful that like all the others I could not access initially they either turned up later or I decided to let it go as they were not showing up.

I completely missed Extraordinary Attorney Woo. I am not sure what I was doing or what I was watching at that time. There was so much hype but I just didn’t get to it.
Also, Through the Darkness seemed like a drama I would enjoy. But never got the time to start.

2023 is already giving me FOMO with Trolley . I was supposed to catch up this weekend but I haven’t. Hope I don’t miss this one.

I just restarted Bravo My Life from mid-2022 and will likely restart Secret House after. They're both long ones with crazy plot lines and evil characters, but unless a show is really a snoozer, I'm a finisher. I tried to see what the reviews would be like on here, but neither are reviewed (not that I'm complaining, since they're not exactly quality with a capital Q)! Still, sometimes these angsty ones are good for cathartic purposes.

Gauss Electronics. I started live watching the first week, and then I don't know what happened. Suddenly, everyone was raving about it and it was over.

Definitely got sucked into some sort of "real life" wormhole that pulled me out of the kdrama world!

Under the Queen's Umbrella and Little Women were both available to me, and just didn't peak my interest, but ended up being decently popular, so I guess I missed them? But I'm probably not going to go back and watch them anytime soon, because I still can't quite work up the desire to do it.

Since I didn't have Viki until late in the year though, two dramas I do really want to watch that I missed at the time are Sh**ting Stars and Showtime Begins! I don't really remember if they were huge or popular or anything, but those are the ones that stand out to me as being something that I would thoroughly enjoy that I didn't get to watch as they aired and am excited to get to soon.

I'd also really like to watch Adamas, but have no idea if I'll be able to find it anywhere.

"Under the Queen's Umbrella." I watched the first 15 minutes when it premiered and it just didn't grab me. But I love sageuks, everyone praises it, and it's on Netflix (which makes it easily accessible). So I keep meaning to hit play again. Maybe I'll give it another try once AoS is over.

Missed in a sense "didn't watch but planning to" or "didn't watch and not planning to"? Because if it's former then I have none, and if it's the latter, then it's definitely AoS - avoiding Hong sisters dramas is a self-care)))

Dr. Park's Clinic(I'll never be able to press play to this one), Tracer and Big Bet(It began airing in December so😁). I was so enthusiastic for Big Bet but it's proving to not be my thing.

My proper 2022 gift will the The Good Detective 2. The desire to or not to press play on this one is on equal footing.

Hmm there are a lot of dramas that aired last year that were super hyped but I’m not interested in beginning them. These include Attorney Woo, UTQU, Alchemy, Squid Game, etc. Real life has been somewhat difficult, so no more angst and stress for me from Kdrama world.

What I’d come around to watch it at a later date: Our Beloved Summer. Dunno why I still haven’t begun it. Was sucked into Cdramaworld lately and right now I’m rewatching Romance is a Bonus Book. In dire need of more rainbow and sunshine and happy romcom. I have to admit I rewatched it partly because of LJS’s letter to fans informing them that he thought of IU as his Kang Dan-I (FL of RIBB).

I don’t have any particular feelings for LJS or IU (apart from thinking that they are both talented and bright), but when I saw the reference to Kang Dani, it made me really happy for them.😊

I’m loving it all over again. It’s totally my kind of shows. 🙂

I think comparing IU to Kang Dan-i is one of the sweetest declaration of love I’ve ever heard in my life. It’s like telling her he’s been in love with her for a long, long time. And more than that, they are really good friends.

It’s been a long time since the last time I saw such hype on fan walls.

But I do not think I will watch AoS, I remember watching the 1st season's 4eps but that's about it and will probably not continue.

I stumbled upon and quickly fell down the K-drama rabbit hole only about 2½ years ago. I'm still playing catch-up with older shows while at the same time trying to keep up with the new ones that I can get on Netflix and Viki. I feel a bit like Sisyphus—no matter how much I watch, I seem to fall more and more behind! At least I can't complain that there's nothing I want to watch.

In terms of the 2022 shows, I just started Through the Darkness. Next up in the queue is Under the Queen's Umbrella. There are more than a half-dozen others on the list—and that doesn't count the ones on Disney+, to which I don't subscribe (yet), as well as the ones that I can't seem to find on any platform. I foresee a VPN in my near future...

I really must thank the Dramabeans community for giving me an entertaining and insightful education about K-dramas, as well as a place to commune with like-minded folks!

At the moment, I would pick Little Women and Gaus Electronics as two dramas I missed out on. These two got a lot of comments and some raves so that made me kinda curious.

I don't know if I'll circle back (lol) to them because 2023 dramas are out to get me. x)

Alchemy of Souls used to be my regret. I’m like a lot of you, I miss a few episodes and don’t make the time to catch up. However, I didn’t get into it and then when I heard the FL wasn’t returning it seemed to be a good reason to give it up. Everyone says it works out just fine with the new lead but at this point? I’m honestly meh about it.
For those who missed Extraordinary Attorney Woo, I cannot recommend it enough! Park Eun-Bin was amazing and Kang Tae-Oh was perfection. It’s one of those shows where everyone played their roles so well you couldn’t imagine anyone else as the characters. Absolutely the best kdrama of 2022, bar none!

I watched Bad and Crazy in December 2022. I think it came out in January 2022? I thought it was fantastic, which makes me want to go back and watch some of the others I missed in 2022. My dad has been watching Kiss Sixth Sense, so I want to try that. (My dad lives in another city and I don't get to watch TV with him. I hear there is a way to watch things together but I think he's using my Netflix account, so I probably can't do that! 🤣) It's really a mystery why some shows grab me and some don't. I came to terms with the idea that books are only good if you read them at the right time in your life. Maybe TV is like that too?

The one I missed was Little Women. I love young adult literature especially the classics (Anne of Green Gables, etc.). So, it was hard for me to pass this one by, but I felt uncomfortable with the tenuous and negative connection to source material. This was a particularly hard decision because of how visually beautiful viewers said the show was. So, as time passes, I might give it a try. As for Attorney Woo, I was one of those viewers that felt it was a kind of ordinary drama, so I got half way through and stopped. I just read in article in the NYtimes this morning that talked about the popularity of lawyer/police shows that had an episodic structure with a team that worked together like Attorney Woo. I thought it said well why we will be seeing more lawyers and episodic, multi season shows in the future. It turns out those kinds of stories get lots of watchers and remained watched year over year so lots of money to be made. Here is a link, hope it works. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/08/business/media/police-crime-tv-shows-streaming.html

Interesting article. Hospital shows would seem to fit this category, too; they are built around a regular cast of characters working as a team to solve a case, with a particular case being solved/resolved within one episode.

Required fields are marked *

Yes! Isn't that so interesting! I don't like episodic shows usually myself (probably one reason Attorney Woo didn't interest me enough to finish). But, I think we are seeing a direction of k-dramas moving towards this kind of structure more and more. Even the Good Doctor from quite a few years back (which was redone as a successful American show) had that episodic structure with a positive team working towards a feel good goal at the end of each episode. Throw in a tiny bit of tension (a greedy hospital administrator), a feel good premise (someone with a disability succeeding) and you have a successful show. Well, I guess we will see what next year brings!!

You will be incredibly angry on Louisa May Alcott's behalf if you choose to watch this one. I still am - and I only got to episode 6 before I got suffocated by it and gave up. Let me tell you, I can watch all kinds of bad television (I actually love several dramas that most people hated)... but I could not get through this one.

Love Between Fairy and Devil.
Despite it getting rave reviews I'm really apprehensive going in as I love the source material. It is a very dark and sad story and it doesn't connect to the bright fluffy drama trailers I've watched. I'll probably get around to it someday, when my memory is hazier and I can appreciate it as something of an alternate reality. And though I hear Dylan Wang has improved, he has not impressed me in earlier projects. His hair impressed me a lot in Meteor Garden, it's the only fond memory I have left of it.
