Kim Min-kyu time-slips into the body of The Heavenly Idol

If you woke up as an idol, what would you do? Kim Min-kyu (Business Proposal) finds himself in this exact situation in the first teaser for tvN’s upcoming fantasy rom-com The Heavenly Idol, and I’m already anticipating lots of laughter.

The teaser opens with a solemn tone — our protagonist Rembrary (Kim Min-kyu) is a high priest, revered by all amidst a time of horseback battles and religious worship. That all changes one day when the bright rays of sunlight suddenly morph into the harsh glare of stage lights, and Rembrary finds himself in a completely different world.

Blinking his bewilderment away, Rembrary realizes he’s onstage, his regal priest robes exchanged for a crop top and form-fitting leather pants. As his groupmates launch into synchronized choreography around him, Rembrary strikes a confident pose… and then he brashly declares, “I don’t know how to dance!” HAHAHA.

Thus begins Rembrary’s life as idol Woo Yeon-woo, which involves flailing around like a fish out of water in the practice room. Afterwards, he faces his next challenge — cohabiting in a cluttered dorm with four other messy boys. With a sigh, Rembrary resigns himself to his fate as part of the “mang-dol” — failed idol — group Wild Animal. But who knows? He might just be the second wind that they need to hit big.

Though we don’t get to see the rest of the cast just yet, the drama also stars Go Bo-kyul (Hi Bye, Mama!) as Kim Dal, the manager of Wild Animal and Yeon-woo’s biggest fan. They’ll have to face off Lee Jang-woo (Oh! Samkwang Villa) as Shin Jo-woon, the vice-chairman of the largest entertainment company in Korea — who gets possessed by a demon king from Rembrary’s world. Yikes.

Rounding out the cast, we have Tak Jae-hoon (Dark Hole), Yeh Ji-won (Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol), Hong Seung-beom (Old School Intern), and Lee Woo-tae in his dramaland debut.

Directed by Park So-yeon and Lee So-yoon, with scripts penned by Lee Chun-geum, The Heavenly Idol is slated for a February 15 premiere.

Too obvious to say how much I’m looking forward to seeing this? I hope that it will live up to its promise and that I’ll get to see it.

Alternate working title: Any Excuse for Abs.

This has the potential to be incredibly fun, incredibly stupid, or incredibly stupid fun. But what is up with the spate of dramas featuring priests?

Priests, and divorce lawyers and ghosts/ghost fighters. I’m already mentally running a tally for 2023 Beanie Career of the Year.

The Heavenly Idol is adapted from a pretty successful web novel, so the drama adaptation was an expected output, but your comment does make me wonder if there's a drama forecast like the one for fashion trend predictions 😆

“Wild Animal”. Just crack me up. How has no one used this name before, in the real world?

Exactly! 😆 I’m sure there’s a garage band somewhere that had to have considered this.

I find it a tongue-in-cheek reference to the term "beastdol", which was the general concept of Korean male idol groups who were formed in the noughties. They were defined by aggressive choreo, their angry love serenades, and there was a heavy emphasis on their abs. Popular examples are 2PM, B2ST (literally pronounced "beast", but they have changed their name to HIGHLIGHT) and MBLAQ.

Mad props for extremely realistic portrayal of a typical boy group's dorm - the image is so spot on it's hysterical))) Keep this true to life approach going, show, I'm begging you!

The most important question though - will ML save the (kpop) world from demon king by the holy art of lipsync?

he seems a bit wooden with his reactions but the premise is fun so I guess this is a light no effort watch for a tired worknight

Now this looks fun and fresh! Hooray to whoever came up with a different storyline and who wants to guess on how many dramas will follow suit this year and take us away from lawyers? OR, will there be one that has a lawyer turned singer? LOL I look forward to this one. He looks good in that awful crop top.

Speaking about lawyers, I'm wondering why there hasn't been a Korean remake of Legally Blonde when they have been a lot of lawyer protagonists who did not go through the traditional route. A blessing or a curse?

I was expecting to see bleach-haired Kim Min-kyu (both his priest and idol characters have white hair in the source material), but alas. Still the positive side is that we could see him sport idol make-up that he definitely rocks. Woo Yeon-woo and his fellow group mates actually wore suits(?) and harnesses (at least from what I remember in the webtoon adaptation), but the crop top and leather pants are not just legit representations of male idols' (slightly adventurous) stage fashion, but they also help to highlight Rembrary's fish-out-of-water situation.

I think The Heavenly Idol could be a joyful ride if it just sticks to the fun nonsensicality of its out-of-the-world premise and explains well the reasons behind Rembrary's transmigration.

Oho. This sounds really interesting. Please let this be a fun, laughter-filled greatness. I need something this absurd (with possibility to turn thoughtful too) to start my drama-adventure in 2023.

If they manage to pull it off, this could easily become at the minimum a top five drama of 2023 for me.

This looks super fun. I'm also really looking forward to the romance angle considering the male lead's past as a priest. Also curious about how they'll deal with the way his background most certainly clashes with his new, sexy idol image.
