Just a heads up for any Beanies in the US: Prison Playbook is leaving Netflix on the 24th of January, so the last day to watch it is January 23! It's been on my list for a while, so I definitely moved it up. Also, the episodes are quite long, so don't wait until the last minute if you want to watch!

I really do not get the internet culture of malicious commentators and trolls. What is the point? To make an actress upset? Or harm their reputation?

The latest one involves Go Yoon Jung’ as her agency released an official statement announcing that they will be taking legal action against perpetrators who post malicious comments and edited photos of Go Yoon Jung.

Recently, Go Yoon Jung’s high school graduation photo was maliciously edited and spread online. The original photo was then belatedly released, proving that the previous photo was edited with ill intention.

A person can have an opinion whether an actor is pretty or not; or whether the actor is good at their craft. But to photoshop a high school picture to "prove" she is not a natural beauty because of plastic surgery is bad. Korean natural beauty standards are very high and valuable in the CF market. Such a charge could damage her reputation to advertisers.

As usual @welh640 you bring up a really interesting issue. As someone older, whose first half of life predates the Internet, I have not understood this either, and I think the intensity of the culture of "scandal" in Korea is ridiculous and damaging. (It does make for a reliable kdrama plot device though!)

Of course there are pre-Internet continuities, and cross-national similarities in the culture of scandal and the way it allows expression of hostility as well as curiosity. I know from the 1700s on, you can see a prurient interest in scandals in Europe and the U.S. usually directed against those in power, or, all too often against women.

Of course the Internet has unleashed this resentment, and especially misogynistic resentment, everywhere. The U.S. has plenty of this type of Internet participation. But it does seem to me as an outsider that Korea society encourages this kind of resentment and relishes its effects.

I'm not sure if that assessment is accurate, but if it is, I wonder what in the national culture explains this difference. I've read that the current politics in Korea actively encourage misogyny, so that might be a factor, but judging by Kdramas, which I'm sure are a completely accurate picture of Korean society (ha!) this Internet culture of attacks on female celebrities predates the current administration. So I wonder what explains this phenomenon?

I think part of it is cultural and part of it is lack of socialization skills. Cultures will class systems will usually look down upon lower class members.

Cyberbullying allows bullies to avoid facing their victims, so it requires less courage and provides the illusion that bullies will not get caught. Sociologists point to low self-esteem, lack of respect for others, lack of empathy, boredom, revenge, peer pressure/group think, empowerment, and thrill of getting reaction are some reasons people bully others. Some of these bullies may have been bullied themselves so the internet provides them a place to lash out.

About one third (32%) of all teenagers who use the internet say they have been targets of a range of annoying and potentially menacing online activities – such as receiving threatening messages; having their private emails or text messages forwarded without consent; having an embarrassing picture posted without permission; or having rumors about them spread online.

This makes the victim feel hurt, angry, afraid, helpless, hopeless, isolated, ashamed, and even guilty that the bullying is somehow your fault. They may even feel suicidal.

Sulli’s 2019 suicide got agencies to become proactive to seek legal action against malicious commentators. But in Korea, even if a defendant is caught and convicted the fine is only approximately $1,000. Malicious commentators will continue because there is no effective means to stop them.

Tbh, this is why I really want people to read English fluently. As an example, my country uses English as a foreign language, and we aren’t really a reading culture. People normally don’t read English at all, and they miss out good information from the rest of the world. Knowing people from different countries, understanding cultural differences and perspectives towards many things help widen a person’s view of the world and of the self. I really think that because I’m able to use English, I’m dont easily fall prey to these bullying, gaslighting, shaming things that aren’t true.

Knowing English will expose them to another world that a lot of people don’t and won’t tolerate such nasty behaviors.

And ofc the world needs more people who, with their good judgement, can call out bullying behaviors. I think bullies keep bullying others because nobody told them in their face in front of the whole crown that they are bullies.

8

Once again I don't think I'll be the most eloquent and this is probably just common knowledge but to answer your question about why malicious trolls exist, it's layered. The anonymity makes people feel braver to be jerks. There's envy & jealous at play because whoever is being targeted encompasses or has something the bully doesn't have, can't have, or can't handle. (What I mean by can't handle is for example popularity. It can be stressful and overwhelming to be popular because there's always judgements and expectations on you. Person A might be able to cope with that well because of whatever positive means such as healthy sense of self, healthy relationships with others, etc while person B just feels pressure and they can't let that show so that morphs into something twisted which then makes them feel negative feelings toward person A). It can be a high to get negative thoughts & feelings out through destructive means. Kinda like when you scream swear words out loud after injuring yourself or out of frustration. Gossip is titilating and usually the worse it it, the more interesting it is. Same with any drama.

Now about the beauty standards/plastic surgery thing, it's just honestly so sad and frustrating what people have to go through. They put *such* an emphasis on looks and even support or suggest plastic surgery (I think South Korea is considered a plastic surgery capital, right?) and yet they judge or scandalize people for doing it, no matter what the procedure.

The people who harmed others on the internet should all be punished.

I saw something about how Today's Webtoon didn't do too well because "it was adapted from a Japanese manga and therefore Korean audiences couldn't relate to it".
I am so confused by this because it's not like that was the first time a drama had been adapted from a Japanese source and it's also not like webtoons & comics don't exist in Korean culture.

I've been in along slump, I've only watched one drama last year (All of us are dead. I've started watching dramas again this year, since a week really, & I've already finished 3:
_ Through the darkness
_ Happiness
_ D.P.
All kind of depressing I know, they were still amazing.

On one hand I'm happy to have watched them, on the other hand I'm not so proud of myself since I've basically binged everything. Thankfully they were all short. I struggle with not doing things extremely: I either do not watch anything or I binge everything.
I haven't read a single book this year & I usually read at least 1 a day. I binge-read a lot of books last year, I replaced 1 addiction with another.

Now I don't know if I should try to find something depressing or try another genre. I really wanna watch the Glory but I really don't want to wait & watch the whole thing in one go.

(Sorry for the errors English is not my 1st language)

In case you are worried about bingeing, here is a defense of bingeing and how you can learn from it: https://www.wired.com/story/binge-watching-new-years-resolutions/
I don't know if the author is right in her assertion that binge watching is good for you, but I did like her argument that its better than New Year's resolutions. Of course, I've quit drinking for a week and run 5 miles one day, so I think I've fulfilled all resolutions for this year.

During the winter months, I never feel guilty for binging, as long as I keep up on the rest of my responsibilities. My husband calls it "enjoying a hobby". I watched all of the 1st half of Glory on Netflix the day it dropped, and spent this week watching all 28 episodes of Alchemy of Souls, so I'm ready for the finale this weekend. If you're looking for something that's not depressing, I highly recommend it, as it's very well done.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

I am feeling like a second lead, just a smidge too late, that is.😅 I did extend my best wishes to you all ahead of the festivities, since internet was not an option while I met up with people during the Christmas and New Year celebrations. Still, a tiny part of me regrets not being online to celebrate with you all. My first OT of the new year used to be the list of new year resolutions, until covid affected everything. I have finally admitted to myself that I cannot keep those promises, so I will not be restarting that trend.😅

2022 overall was all right with ups and downs, but it was also a state of limbo. Since mid-2021 I have been on sick leave from work to search for the root of my mental problems and to improve myself with the aid of therapy. In order to battle the burn-out, depression and panic disorder, I was advised to go out and do things I like to do, but those same diagnoses often kept me from doing that. Sick leave itself is also under strict rules to avoid abuse, so it feels more like being in hiding instead of being entirely free.

2023 might be a better year for me. The root of my mental problems turned out to be autism spectrum disorder. This diagnosis offers a lot of understanding of my past, an explanation for the other 3 diagnoses among many other things, and an important piece of paper to turn things around at work and other places in the future.

I was in the middle of a one-year government job internship when I fell ill. On paper I am currently expected to finish this internship in accordance with the rules that applied when I started work late 2020. Once I finish the internship, I get officially appointed as a civil servant and then I will continue doing my job. There are many options out there, like temporary medical part time, job counselling, changing departments… but of course only for employees who have finished their internship and are appointed. Apparently, I am the first intern ever to need such options for medical reasons.🙄

I foresee interesting discussions with about a dozen different departments to get things sorted, which may give me headaches at best and a lot more anxiety in the worst-case scenario.🤕Not to mention the dreadful fact that sooner or later I will have to face and inform my current team leader and coworkers that made me fall ill in the first place. On the other hand, behind all those hurdles lies job clarity in some still unknown form accompanied by freedom. That beats staying in limbo forever.💪🏻

All the best with the work situation. The good thing is that now you have a diagnosis, hopefully there is legislation and actionable policies that support your right to certain changes in the work place.

Turtie, you are a very different person than when you started this journey. You are now informed and educated about the causes and triggers for what happened. Watching dramas is a good way to stop thinking... works for me at least.
One way I dealt with my overthinking is to accept it. I will not change, that's the way my mind works. What I can do is redirect the thoughts. If I notice I spirall on something, I try to focus on something else. Make a list, put it aside.
The good part of overthinking, is that we are quite well prepared. My friends like to travel with me: I'm able to tell them stories, facts and organise the journey.

I found out that JTBC's Fly High Butterfly was released first in Taiwan (Just like Dear M which this drama aired in Japan first). It was now titled Salon de Nabi, aired from July 22 to September 16 last year (2022), its co-production with South Korea and Taiwan and it was a 16-episode Kdrama that never released yet. It starred Daniel Choi and Kim Hwang-yi and of course, it aired on Taiwan's MyVideo and Amazon Prime for selected countries only. That means that Dramabeans didn't covered this Kdrama yet (as well as Dear M too). I hope Dramabeans will might get a series reviews for this and Dear M soon once this and Dear M finally released on South Korea in the near future.

In other news, I watched all episodes for Watcha's Recipe for Farewell (now available through Kocowa), I got bean for Recipe for Farewell already and I felt shocked that Dramabeans didn't listed this 12-episode Kdrama yet. So it might also get into Dramabeans series review soon. As I wondered, this was now one of my best Kdramas that I watched ever because of most impressive performances from Han Suk-kyu (as Changwook) and Kim Seo-hyung (as Da-jeong) in this 12-episode tearjerker. It was based on writer Kang Chang-rae's true story and I hoped some Beanies like me will definitely going to watch this.

I'm new Drama Beans, which I found by doing an online search trying to find out why all the free shows on Kocowa disappeared a couple of days ago. I've been using Ondemandkorea and Kocowa, but I was wondering if any of you have better suggestions for a bigger selection of shows? I've also used Netflix and Viki before, but didn't like the small selection of the former and not being able to use an adblocker on the latter. I've also made a general rule not to use torrents given the number of devices I've lost due to viruses. In combing through this website, I've realized that my two main sources don't have nearly the amount of new shows that I've been looking for. Any suggestions would be great, regardless of whether it's a free or pay service since having access to the latest shows is my main priority. Thanks.

For new shows, I think you can a complete catalog with Hi TV and Viki.
Hi Tv has any regular drama on air. Viki would be useful to you if you like specials, web dramas, weekenders or daily dramas.

The problem is the I think Hi TV is only available in a few regions. I use VPN for Netflix and Hi TV doesn't work if I leave the VPN on. So if you're from the US or any other country where Hi TV doesn't work, I would recommend Netflix and Disney plus.

For old shows I would recommend Viki and YouTube.

I tend to be a bit curmudgeonly when it comes to what services I like to use, and more so if I have to do an added step of downloading an app. :)

Oh, dang. I don't know how that works.
Like Reply said, I use the app on my cell. On the computer I use the browser.

Welcome aboard and good luck. Availability angst. We all suffer from it from time to time. Last year I cancelled my paid subscriptions to both Kocowa and ODK for lack of English subbed current or new dramas particularly with Kocowa being a joint venture of the big three: KBS, SBS and MBC. I watched as many of the big three dramas wound up in places like Disney+ rather than on Kocowa/Viki. As a US viewer my main access to kdramas are Viki US and Netflix US. I have access to Prime Video through my Amazon Prime account. For Cdramas I recently subscribed to iQIYI and I am pleased so far. YouTube is also available but I haven’t broken down to pay to go ad free. That may happen.

Hello everyone. I know "Through the Darkness" was a drama with a huge fan number and high quality. Which is why I decided to consult you here. Hoping that among the fellow beanies, I can find someone who is still willing to talk about it. Here is my question ❓
During the events of the drama, we see our Profilers changed their outfits and tried wearing suits. What was the reason?
Was it because the first time they did it, the interviewed prisoner said that he felt he was important and they could stat the interview easier?

0

I think they were trying to seperate their cop and profiler image. They needed the killers to talk, they were doing a favour by accepting to share their feelings. So the suits were more formal and helped to make the criminals feeling important.
