Park Hyung-shik shows his resolve in Our Blooming Youth

The first teaser has been released for tvN’s mystery-thriller romance Our Blooming Youth, focusing on our fictional sageuk’s hero Park Hyung-shik (Sountrack #1). The teaser is intense, and gives us the mystery-thriller vibe, while the newly released poster sheds the thrills for the cute.

There are whispers across the country about the gloomy Crown Prince Lee Hwan (Park Hyung-shik), who is said to be hiding secrets and suffering from a dark curse. But our heroine Min Jae-yi – played by Jeon So-ni (Dr. Brain) – has her own troubles as well. Wrongly accused of murdering her family, she is now on a mission with her best friend/maidservant Pyo Ye-jin (Taxi Driver) to restore their household’s reputation. Also entangled in the investigations is Jae-yi’s almost-fiancé Yoon Jong-seok (Crime Puzzle), as well as the aspiring coroner Lee Tae-seon (Next Door Witch J).

The new video teaser begins with our crown prince out in the foggy woods alone, when a lone arrow is suddenly shot in his direction. Hwan is soon joined by the rest of his troops and he asks in voiceover, “Did you hear as well that I’ve been cursed by a ghost? I’m told that people are gossiping about it.”

Hwan tries to stay focused as he readies his own bow, but when he releases his arrow, we jump to a quick sequence of an unknown woman getting attacked. We then return to our crown prince who stands in his ceremonial robes and the video ends on his determined declaration: “Even if we say I did get cursed, I will not be shaken.”

Written by Jung Hyun-jung (Lovestruck in the City) with PD Lee Jong-jae (Psychopath Diary) at the helm, tvN’s Our Blooming Youth premieres next month on February 6.

New trend? No obvious lawyer yet though 🤣. I am looking forward to this and intrigued about whether any of the original “Golden Hairpin” book plot was kept (at least book 1). For sure there was only 1 gender bender character in that book so having 2 is different. The nearly 2 year wait is nearly over!

I enjoyed the novel “The Golden Hairpin” also. It was in 2021 so it has been awhile. The group pic at the end (which is very nice) jogged my memory for the one gender bender character. What’s the second?
I am concerned that making the prince into a CP and being stuck in the palace would limit his ability operate outside. These guys seem to find a way to get out.

Yeah, you know, like borrowing their servants clothes and sneaking out in the hour between dog and owl and no one recognizes them at all.

@bong-soo. No 2nd one in the book but there are 2 girls wearing boy clothes in the group picture official poster. I think I read somewhere that the 2nd non-eunuch gender bender is a friend of the FL and helping her investigate.

That is what’s going on.

if I were a haunted prince I would con the pants off ghost and force them to confess. Then turn it into a drinking / gambling buddy and a spare stand-in for when I got errands to run. or I shall call a shaman.

But what if the ghost that haunts him is a female? It'll be inappropriate then... As a man of honor (a prince no less!) he'll have to take a responsibility and marry her (abandoning FL in process). And last time I saw someone trying to do that in a kdrama, things didn't go smoothly at all... Better to call shaman right away.

what if she is a ghost of a murdered gisaeng who used to be a princess

Long-lost sister you mean (cause my imagination is surely not wild enough to explain how an actual crown princess could possibly end up as a gisaeng)? And she haunts him only to ask to avenge her death? Ah, family love...

Excited for this one. Hope we get some up close freeze shots of Park Hyung-shik to, you know, check out his lip gloss.

Such a cute, lighthearted poster... and then there's a teaser that only lacks some zombies to naturally join Kingdom franchise lol. Well, after Happiness I'm confident that my boy can handle such crossover with ease anytime, so there's one thing less to worry about at least.

The whole "cursed by ghost" theme here is rather intriguing - I somehow expected a more vague "strange things always happen around Crown Prince, is he cursed or what?" explanation, not something seemingly specific with detailed origins. Since I don't recall drama having fantasy tag, someone must've been working hard for a long time to create and fuel all those rumors... Bring in the family tree next time pls so we can start guessing!

Another intriguing thing is the newest description of ML - that's more or less directly calls him as a nasty-tempered royal ass who smiles genuinely as often as pigs are flying. Isn't it promising? I love Hyungsik's trademark brand of sass so really looking forward to see how far he can take it, especially in a not-so-comedic story.

P.S. What's the festive outfit for? Is he getting crowned (too easy), married (too complicated) or performing some ritual (doesn't sound like a legit reason to grin this darkly)?

I should remember more of the original novel but it is a bit vague now. The impression I am getting is that the Korean drama will be its own story based on a general outline from the original.
Anyway in the novel fwir there was a story line about an arranged marriage for the prince which he was trying to get out of. Maybe that pic up there has something to do with that.
I will have to roll with it. I do remember thinking that casting Park Hyung-sik as the prince was perfect.
Also, the novel was set up for a sequel which may have already been published in China.

The book is Golden Hairpin which reportedly has 4 books but only book 1 has been translated into English and available on Amazon. Sadly I don’t read Chinese so maybe someone who does has read the series in the original language. In the first book the FL plays a large role with the ML more a support but so far the teasers suggest a larger role for the ML. In the book the ML is only a prince but not the crown price so that is new!

4 books? Last time I checked there were only 3... Author is a productive one it seems)))

Making a novel adaptation more ML-centric compared to source material is nothing new to kdramas, people often complain about it (even here) actually. Funny thing is that for PHS himself it's gonna be his first such role - he never headlined a drama alone before, and of all his main roles vast majority were in FL-centric shows.

Unwanted arranged marriage? Of course, I expected no less from an angsty palace intrigue about struggling CP))) Though at the stage when reluctant groom has to wear wedding robes it's usually WAY too late to try getting out of the whole thing - one does not simply walk out from the altar in Joseon^^ But hope dies last.

If rumors are to be trusted, producers wanted him from the get-go, even contacted him before he was officially discharged from army... That must've meant something. Pity we'll never know how the original script he was offered to looked like.

Agree. Can’t wait to see PHS play a tsundere. I can’t remember a prior role like that for him. I thought in an interview for Music Soundtrack #1 he said his role was a nervous prince but that could be a translation error.

I assumed his robe was just royal crown prince normal wear since he wears it everywhere including the palace, forest and random group shot…. Although seems like it would make him an easy target for an assassin. 🤣

Some of his previous roles were hot-tempered/mischievous, but not the extent of being outright mean to everyone around him for sure. Promos did say that he's doing it all deliberately for self-protection - to create "don't mess with me" reputation. Which is a totally valid reason for someone of his birth status. I'm still waiting for HS to play a really bad guy though (very challenging for someone so naturally charming and he expressed such desire repeatedly), but I don't really see it happening in the near future, tho who knows...

That's... a bit complicated. I'm a no expert ofc (10+ years of watching sageuks and some research is all I have), but from what I can tell he's wearing 3 types of royal robes in promos (maybe 4, archery scenes are too zoomed-in):
1) the basic everyday Crown Prince robe (poster and that shot of him on the throne);
2) what I call "action dress" robe for training/battle/hunting - the more fitting one with a prominent belt and short-sleeved outer piece (forest scenes);
3) and the most formal one among them all - blue-white-red robe with a beaded hat. This one is reserved purely for huge celebratory occasions like marriage, crowning, religious rituals etc. Him wearing that means big event for sure.

Yeah, as a Crown Prince he's supposed to wear royal robes on a daily basis, but there's still some variety to them, thankfully. And all sageuk princes love to underdress for obligatory sneaking out of the palace fun... So we can still expect a bit of a fashion show from him - both to please beauty lovers and confuse assassins (those guys really have it too easy with royals, you're 100% right).

If I can wander way off thread here. I thought Yeo Jin-goo looked particularly fine in the ‘fighting’ blue outfit he wore in THE CROWNED CLOWN (2019) (Viki US). As king he was dressed in the traditional red robes (and looked great also lol).
Some nice bts pics for TCC:

Yeo Jin Goo is one of the few actors who wear hanbok like a second skin (to the point that sometimes I wonder if this is why his modern projects don't do as well as his sageuks), and TCC was a visual masterpiece overall. Agree that blue robes look especially good - kingly bright red isn't exactly the best color for him, though in a drama thanks to lightning and filters it was barely an issue...
Wouldn't it be wonderful if along with Director X and Screenwriter Y production news usually included the names of costume designers and the whole stylists team? Those are the people who can elevate or ruin drama's visuals like no other!

Yes! The year of Sageuks has begun! Give me dark curses, but pretty people and I’m in.

Ooh... I'm getting excited for this one! It's been a couple years since a Sageuk I really loved came out but this looks promising. Especially with Park Hyung-shik as the lead. Only saw him in a couple dramas but was impressed by him in both.
