[Beanie Recs] Thoughtful “dear diary” dramas

Ahoy, Beanies! It’s time to gather your collective genius for a recommendation series that features you and your drama knowledge. Each week we’ll drop a drama conundrum and leave it up to you to provide a drama rec, and the appropriate rationale behind it, be it long or short. Respond below!

@redfox: I am sending in this question because I’m doing some reflecting and journaling myself, so I’d like to know of any “dear diary” kind of dramas. I’m looking for stories where a character is journaling and reflecting on their experiences, whether to catalog daily emotions, follow a plan, or just dump frustrations.

Have a very particular drama itch that needs scratching? In need of a Beanie Rec? Email us at hello @ dramabeans.com and we’ll feature your topic in a future post.

Psychopath Diary 😁😁

Jokes aside, Scent of a Woman had a bucketlist which was a bit similar to a diary, and although the reason for it was tragic, it was written very thoughtfully and sensitively.

I don’t think this is completely what you are looking for but in THE INTEREST OF LOVE the FL gives the ML her notebook of all her mistakes and how to fix them for their job. Aside from that there is no other journaling but I will say, it’s an incredibly reflective drama and doesn’t subscribe to any clear cut answers. Just watched episode 10 and here are a few snippets of the reflective dialogue:

“The bus route
This is exactly what life is like
A circle
You fool yourself into thinking that you’re going somewhere
But then you’re back to square one
You’re just going in circles
Our entire life is just one big, never-ending circle.”

ML: That was a classical piece, right?

FL: Chopin once loved a woman. He wrote that piece for her

ML: Musicians are romantic even when they’re in love. He must’ve loved her a lot

FL: But they broke up

ML: Why?

FL: They came face-to-face with reality
Social status differences, family disapproval issues, and other such things
That’s why it’s called the ‘The Farewell Waltz’

Also for a more fun one in EXTRAORDINARY ATTORNEY WOO, Woo young-woo made a list of all her date ideas with Jun-ho, it was super cute. And they actually did some of them! ♥️

Here for the The Interest of Love appreciation! 👏👏👏

The drama is so reflective and poetic, and considering how it's mostly about people making stupid mistakes and trying their best to learn from them, it's not irrelevant here.

Oh you included Ahn Soo young's favourite dialogue of mine. The representation of life through a circle was quite philosophic.

The insertment of Farewell Waltz was somewhat aesthetic ,imo. Loved it.

My Liberation Notes maybe? I think the Korean title is actually My Liberation Diary. Not a lot of journaling per se happens but the process by which some of the characters begin keeping the journal and how it impacts their lives is very nicely done.

Sorry I’m going to stop spamming but in Twenty Five, Twenty One, the daughter reads her mother’s journal and thus we get transported to her mother’s (Hee-do) love of sport, the friendships she had in her youth and the romantic love of her life

Hum...

In Heart to Heart to FL needs to write in a diary as a treatment and her "doctor/boss" will read.

In Recipe of Farewell, the ML is writing a blog and you can hear the wonderful voice of Han Seok-Kyu.

In 2521, the FL's daughter is reading the diary of her mother.

You Are My Spring. It's didn't have a physical dear diary. But it had this monologues that seemed like reciting a line from a diary from years ago.

"Because This Is My First Life." The thoughtful and heartfelt life lessons are narrated by the heroine in a voiceover, but they feel very much like diary entries.

Flower Boy Next Door! The heroine journals about her trauma, her insecurities, her excuses and avoidances. At one point, the hero reads it, which obviously infuriates her because what she writes is so raw and deeply personal, but it ultimately gives him insight into her headspace that helps him to help her!

I’m trying so hard to not bash Enrique here because you obviously like this drama. I have typed and deleted, typed and deleted, and typed and deleted until landing on these words.

I'll Go Find You If the Weather is Nice.
Eun-seop kept a journal, and a rather poetic one at that. Great, soothing drama.

I'm here for this drama! It's easily one of my top 3 dramas ever.

Eun-seob's diary entries beautifully sum up the episodes. Hae-won teasing him about it was cute and second-hand embarassment-inducing!

I can't think of a show right now. Seems uncommon.

I just wanted to say I love journaling & stationery things so I always perk up when I see someone using a journal or writing in a notebook. I like to see what pen they're using lollll. It's usually nondescript though. XP

In Faith, Eunsoo has a diary that was left/found in another time. The diary contains information that needs to be translated / deciphered, and is important to people for different reasons. In the Goryeo time period where she time travels, the diary is referred as Hwata’s diary. Eunsoo saves Choi Young, as the diary (pre)records.

Choi Woong's narrative in 'Our Beloved Summer' feels close to a diary. Reflecting on his love life featuring every season in it.

Arang and the Magistrate if I remember correctly? The female lead loses her memory and the diary helps her understand her past self.. or was it some other Shin Mina drama..
