Kim Hyun-joo, Kim Sung-chul

  • Netflix announced their lineup for Hellbound’s second season, with Kim Hyun-joo (Trolley), Yang Ik-joon (Bad Guys: City of Evil), and Kim Shin-rok (Reborn Rich) reprising their roles while Kim Sung-chul (Our Beloved Summer) will be stepping in for Yoo Ah-in (Chicago Typewriter). Alongside new characters played by Yang Dong-geun (The Forbidden Marriage) and Im Sung-jae (Extraordinary Attorney Woo), we’ll also be getting a special guest appearance from Moon Geun-young (Catch the Ghost). Filming is set to begin this summer with production continuing under the trusted hands of filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho (Monstrous) and writer Choi Kyu-seok. [News1]

  • KBS has finally confirmed an air date for the long delayed Run Into You, which will be coming to our screens in two more months on the first of May. Starring Kim Dong-wook (King of Pigs) and Jin Ki-joo (Showtime Begins), the fantasy timeslip will be zooming us back (again) to 1987 with scripts by Baek So-yeon (Tale of Nokdu) and directing helmed collaboratively by PD Kang Soo-yeon (Tale of Nokdu, Ghost Detective) and PD Lee Woong-hee. [News1]

  • In the meantime, KBS is lining up a new drama called Fantasy Sonata, and reports have Park Ji-hoon (Weak Hero Class 1) and rookie actor Hong Ye-ji (2037) on the casting table for the lead roles. Based on a popular webtoon by the same title, the romance sageuk is still in the planning stages. [Star News]
  • Jung Ji-so (The Glory) has been signed on for the drama remake of Miss Granny, taking on the main character played by Shim Eun-kyung (Money Game) and Na Moon-hee (Navillera) in the comedy-fantasy movie back in 2014. The original had a lot of charm, so here’s hoping the drama is a win! There is no news yet on who will be playing Jung’s older counterpart, but filming is set to begin later this year with PD Park Yong-soon directing and scripts penned by Heo Seung-min. [News1]

  • A new poster has dropped for TVING’s upcoming Duty After School, featuring our student soldiers who need to help defend the planet. Starring Shin Hyun-soo (Critical X), Im Se-mi (The Empire), and Kim Ki-hae (End of Broadcast) among a large ensemble cast, the sci-fi thriller will be launching at the end of this month on March 31. [Daily Sports Hankook]
  • On the other side of the genre spectrum, Woo Do-hwan (The King: Eternal Monarch) is fighting to defend the nation’s people in MBC’s Joseon Lawyer, together with Bona (Twenty Five Twenty One) and Cha Hak-yeon (Tomorrow). Also premiering on March 31, the newly released stills showcase our two leads partnering up while the new video teaser unveils a little more about all of our main characters. [MBC]

I think I’m in love with every musical actor in Korea. 😂 I blame Oh Man-Seok and Cho Cheong-woo for my obsession. I’m so happy for “Shakespeare In Love’s” Kim Sung-chul. He has big shoes to fill but love a good challenge.

@wishfultoki, looks like “Joseon Lawyer”and “Rebel” are around the same timeline. May we’ll get to see the same cliff of non-doom again. 😂

I agree. Musical actors are on a completely different level.

Yesterday I watched the musical Miss Saigon 25th Aniversary (it's filmed in a theatre but it seems a movie) and one of the main actors is Hong Kwang Ho, a musical actor from South Korea. What a voice!!

Hong Kwang Ho was love at first ost. He made a fan out of me when he sang the ost, "Balbambalbam," for Queen Seon Deok. It's been on my playlist for over a decade now.

I was fortunate to watch "Miss Saigon" live in Seattle a while back. I hoped to see Lea Salonga, but she wasn't part of the show.

Thanks for sharing! I haven't seen the 25th Anniversary show yet, so I will look for it.

I have had "Balbambalbam" on my playlist since I watched Queen Seon Deok (wonderful OST!) last summer, but I had not listened other themes sung by him yet.
And yesterday I found all the musicals he has starred. He has even been Quasimodo!

I encourage you to search Miss Saigon 25th Anniversary.
The Engineer is magnificently played by Jon Jon Briones.

Waow, they really matched Woo Do-Hwan and Bona's clothes.

2 - not sure about this one, but I have such a soft spot for team behind Nokdu and cast is nice. Maybe?

3 - another youth romance sageuk? Well, there's demand it seems...

4 - I loved original movie, so NOPE. Making the whole thing longer will ruin it.

6 - oh, they gave Hakyeon 2 more seconds of screentime, nice! Nah, I'm joking. Still nothing clear about his character. Also, is ML a fake noble? Not sure how OTP is gonna work then with FL being princess and all...

Woo Do-hwan sure looks dashing in his Joseon get-up! The sleeves look like wings, perfect for his free as a bird character :))

No. 3. KBS’s FANTASY SONATA. An addition to my list of possible upcoming sageuk and historical dramas. The two leads are blank slates for me but PJH has experience in the business as a child actor and now young adult actor. The role of king with two personalities sounds like a great opportunity for him.
(I really have to get my notes together and get an updated list out. It is get unwieldy. I think I am in the 10-12 drama range now.)

No. 6. MBC’s JOSEON LAWYER. As a US viewer I am still experiencing severe availability angst. MBC, what is the problem?
Also, WDH, what’s the story on BLOODHOUNDS?

Absolutely! Why is the US cut out of streaming so frequently? Frustrating! And often it's the really good ones, while mediocre shows go on both Kocowa and Viki, grrrr!

--This is a really good opportunity for Kim Sung-chul, although, of course, the reasons behind Yoo Ah-in's firing are very sad. I did watch the first season of "Hellbound" and am not sure how any of these characters can be returning, though.

--Why was "Run Into You" delayed for so long?

--Even though the plot of "Joseon Lawyer" doesn't sound interesting, there's so much talent involved I'm definitely going to watch.

On Hellbound, Kim Shin-rok was going through a ‘rebirth’ in the final scene of S1. But YAI’s character was dead - not sure how he’d still be in S2 unless it’s another rebirth or S2 tells his back story like a prequel.

Good to see Kim Sung-chul stepping up into a lead role.

KBS decided to stop airing drama on Wednesday-Thursday. The line up for Monday-Tuesday was already full with Brain Works and then Oasis...

1. Kim Sung-chul is an incredible actor (and longtime actor crush) and I’m sure he’s ready to step up the challenge. That said, Yoo Ah-in’s presence just had this quality that was so magnetic and the circumstances behind his departure is so sad. I hope he’s doing okay, but I doubt it.

2. So KBS finally remembered this drama exists. Not gonna lie, the repeated delays does make me a little concerned about the show’s quality, but I hope I’m proven wrong because i like the lead actors.

3. Newcomer actors! Anyone who’s seen my older posts know how much I love it when dramas prominently showcase talented new new faces. Park Ji-hoon’s been active for a while now so I’m familiar with him, but Hong Ye-ji is a complete blank for me and that makes me excited.

4. Jung Ji-so is a wonderful actress and I’m sure she’ll do well here, but I’m not sure this movie needed a remake. The original Miss Granny is a charming, heartfelt movie that can be enjoyed by anyone. I don’t see the point in re-adapting something that still works.

5. Poster looks fine I guess, but the girl’s short sleeves is extremely distracting for some reason. Don’t know why, but it just feels… jarring.

6. I don’t even know if this will be good, but oh my god they both look absolutely gorgeous. Woo Do-hwan will be the death of me.

I feel sadness for Yoo Ain and I can’t shake it. I have enormous sympathy for all those who are infinitely less privileged and empowered than he is as I said before but I’ve loved him in some wonderful roles and wish that it was possible for his friends and colleagues to speak publicly with compassion about him but the likely punitive blowback has rendered everyone into cowards. Humans are so disappointing at times. The fact that he might have been struggling with depression, anxiety or grief isn’t even entertained and all that remains is the draconian response, loss of standing, reputation and roles.
