Anime fever in South Korea. The Number One movie so far this year is THE FIRST SLAM DUNK, a Japanese anime film that has 3.938 M views ($30.66 M) Korean box office since its opening on 1/4/23. It made it to number one a second time knocking out THE POINT MEN which did not make back its production and distribution costs (1.7 M views; $13.2 M). Last week the new DEMON SLAYER movie was #2. This weekend, Makoto Shinkai's new movie SUZUME has the most ticket pre-sales of the year. In Japan, SUZUME had 10 M views in the first three days of release.

Entertainment reporters cannot explain the sudden surge and interest in Japanese anime. However, theater owners must be pleased since SK box office still has not recovered from pre-pandemic days.

every year is almost same - uncertain human world - the uncertain future and yet too causal too mundane.

1000s of lightening each day - every month flood or flash floods - snow storms - thunderstorms - sea storms - typhoons - avalanches - shifts n more shifts - heat waves - hot summer - cold cold season

in one region or many - any n every month - so easy to see and analyse and make points

I demanded cold cold season in nov n dec - and as expected got one of the most beautiful storm - moth earth is just too too kind and benevolent. data turned into useful information comes out as your best best partner. this is why i get to see the most accurate outcome - it's just that i can't turn it into huge benefits.

only if i don't do foolish antics i could have and still do reap huge huge benefits.

The most powerful sly crook blood hungry guys n politician aka political leaders in world - XI and MOODY - they are enjoying their life to fullest. The style of control both is just unmatched. If trump and boris were as much astute 2020-2029 would have turned into a big big event to turn whole human world upside down.

This is so cliché and probably basic but every time I see this story, I wonder if it would make for a good drama adaptation.

I don't know enough Korean entertainers to imagine a fan cast but the ex boyfriend character *does* remind me of someone though I can't place him haha
Maybe the bad guy lawyer from While You Were Sleeping?

I think it was last week or the week before (oh how times flies) when there was a whols discussion thread about birth rate declines and choosing/wanting a child free life. I land in the not wanting children camp but this week my niece told me and my mother how she's trying or planning to try to get pregnant this year and it once again made me feel a certain way especially cause then my mother was like "you can babysit for her" and I was like "you will never see me taking care of a child."

I felt a bit of guilt and I always feel a little bit of guilt and an existiential crisis when I think about kids because the main thing about them is they're proof that you were here/existed. Since that's something I often think about, my legacy (for lack of a better term), I always feel weird about this.

my legacy is in the national museum, thanks to me both my grannies things, my grandpas´ uniform, even a night potty is in a museum not to mention crafts, tapestries, jewelry. and I have sent stories to 24 places, it is all in the archive - around 460 pages alltogether. I have also sent videos, sounds from my environment and else. so my legacy is preserved without children.
but my friends kids, and relatives kids - I am that funky aunt. I have no brothers or sisters so I cant really be an aunt but I find this important - to be a model of independence, creativity and free thought. I get to be the crazy aunt without any responsibilities. I have never babysat (sitted)?) anyone

Having a child is immortality for idiots.
It's not that it does not require efforts (I do not underestimate these efforts and that's the reason I do not have child, that and the fact that I never wanted one). It's not that it does not require efforts, it's that anybody can do it and is doing it.
In addition, why do people leave a trace ?
Why do people graffiti "I was here" ?
Maybe you will do something meaningful enough that it will be remembered. Maybe not. That's ok.

Holy crap. This is breathtakingly offensive. As for "anybody can do it and is doing it" - so is adopting a child after infertility something like immortality for really stupid idiots who've scraped together enough money and jumped through enough mind-numbing, humiliating bureaucratic hoops to do something truly meaningless?

When my friend Julie refers to my kids as my "legacy", it makes me laugh; I don't think of them that way. Not sure why I had them, because at the time, I wasn't crazy about kids. There's an old Italian saying: "When they're little, they're a pain in the neck, and when they grow up, they're a pain in the heart." Yet for me, it turned out to be a good thing in the end. Not sure I would have kids now though because of pressures, high expectations, out of sight expenses, school shootings, etc. I just wish women could feel good about their decision without feeling guilt or sadness. It seems we are never allowed peace of mind no matter which way we go.

It's not related to K-drama but it's related to K-pop. I read this recent article about the controversial segment of one of the popular reality TV show (KMJS) about a girl named Bea who stole P2m ($36,300) from her grandma Agnes' cash register in plastic bag store in Quezon City public market to buy K-pop merchandise. Her aunt Jasmine said it didn't answer total of her purchases and I don't know either if she will be angry and she might taking revenge to stop Bea from buying K-pop merchandise. As Bea's number of Kpop merchandises grew, her grandma Agnes' capital depleted because of Bea paid P2m to buy K-pop merchandise already and I also think that Agnes might be angry like Bea's aunt Jasmine did by finding ways to sell car and their house. As of last count, Bea's Kpop merchandise was now P2.7m ($49,000). Meanwhile, after airing this controversial, scandalous segment, some netizens called this segment either fictional, fake, fabricated, defamed and even mostly untrue story. I hope one day, TV show KMJS and its channel GMA might sue to the court for being aired this totally a fictional, untrue, defamed story.

period pain is underrepresented in dramas.

especially in bodyswapping dramas.

if a male character jumped into female body they would literally die from it.

and then we´d see their afterlife.

can we just have an afterlife drama

other news, im just totally messing up the schedule with korean culture club. im so bad at calendars and planners, I need a secretary plz. this is messed up, I am just about to draw a map on the door

Yes! if they're going to swap bodies I want to see the guy freak out at least the first month he gets his period and I want to see him in pain at least one day every month. And it's not only the cramps, your back and hips can hurt too.

I hope you can find a way to make things work with the club's schedule. Fighting!

I would definitely prefer this portrayal to what we currently get - particularly in cdrama - where the male lead gets to show off how romantic and enlightened he is by buying her pads 😱 and making her take a day off while simultaneously reinforcing stereotypes about how all women are unable to work or do anything when having periods and have no place outside the home. (It’s like there’s a mandatory scene of this in every cdrama and I find them so irritating - possibly because someone hovering over me being Caring is the opposite of what I want in that situation 😅)

Or there's sometimes drink more hot water only 😜
The cdrama, The Day of Becoming You did it quite well because it was also a body swap drama. It was similar to how redfox describes, he technically in a female lead body was dying from pain.

Drinking hot water fixes everything! 😄

I might have to check that one out, I never have much luck with cdramas.

2

I don't watch cdramas so I didn't know that, but it really doesn't sound good.

Wait, actually, everything they do would make sense with a swap bodies trope.
The guy wouldn't be prepared so she would have to buy the pads for him, it would be his first time experiencing the cramps so he would miss work.

LOL a male friend of mine can't see blood so a body swap would literally kill him. He literally would faint the first day. Or more like, everyday. Not going to work for a day? He would stay in a bathtub or shower the whole time.

4

Required fields are marked *

😄 I shouldn’t laugh because it would suck to have blood make you faint but also the idea of someone stuck in the shower for several days because they can’t stand blood is funny 😄

I sometimes watch cdramas because they sound interesting but the reality never measures up for me (I generally find them bland and infuriatingly sexist) and I usually end up dropping them.

3

@beffels I think it would be hilarious to see a guy do that in a kdrama.

So I'm not the only beanie that couldn't watch Love Between Fairy and Demon? Tell me I'm not alone, please.

1

@tabong I didn’t even try! even modern settings I find a struggle, fantasy cdrama is not a genre that appeals to me at all.

2

yes, plus constant crying and /or cussing, and random cussing outside, and feeling so cold you want to sit on fire.

I am watching the Chinese drama Once and forever: the sun rises. It’s covering current day with flashbacks to the female lead’s teenage years in 1997. They refer to the time of the month as being ‘unlucky’. They literally did a public announcement in a mixed gender dance practice asking if anyone was unlucky and the girl who put her hand up was told to sit out the practice. I can not imagine anything more humiliating as a teenager than to have EVERYONE know your ‘luck’ had run out! I don’t know if it is a translation issue and another phrase was actually being used as I have not noticed this in any of the body swap dramas but I may have missed it.

Going into the weekend, I have to vent about Yoo Jung-Sook, the three siblings mother. (Three Bold Siblings) What an unredeemable character...she has no manners, no sense, no self-awareness or reflection, is nasty and cruel, and does not seem to learn. Even when she has to apologize for appalling behavior, she does it resentfully but never changes her ways.

I haven't watch a single drama this week. Not even one episode. But yesterday I saw my mom wearing an awful outfit and I thought of you guys. LOL 😂😆

I watched Shrek with a friend and that movie is just the best. And even tho I go around telling people to never watch stuff dubbed but everything with subtitles, Shrek is just amazing in Spanish. I love Mexican voice actors, they make animated movies better (I did try watching the original but after tasting the good stuff you can't go back).

I've also heard people say Shrek in french is awesome, so I wonder if you have a movie, tv show, etc that you think it's better dubbed in a specific language than the original.

Anyway, I hope you all had a nice week and hope you'll enjoy this weekend. XOXO

I'm a firm believer in parents' absolute right to dress however they want, especially as they get older. While I'm normally a fashion police, I lay down my badge when I see my old parents in the most heinous but comfortable clothes because they deserve that comfort unilaterally.

In my house my mom herself is the proud member of the fashion police and I'm the criminal. 😆

The usual thing is for us to tell each other when something doesn't look good tho. She cares a lot even if she's just going to wear something comfortable tbh. Yesterday was an exception.

2

I can remember when I was a young teenager not wanting to be seen with my dad 😂 (sorry Dad!) but now I have embraced the policy of just wearing whatever is comfortable and practical - soon my children will be the ones to cringe 😈

3

@tabong... I've been the criminal to my mom's fashion police numerous times as well, so I empathize. I, too, do the same consults with my mother, since usually her concerns are about looking old and mine are about looking polished.

To be fair, my parents dress well for the most part, considering their age, and especially when going out in public, but we all have our disheveled moments.

2

@beffels Teenage years are the worst for that kind of thing. I was a particularly rebellious teenager despite my intellectual promiscuity, so for putting up with that alone, I feel like I can't say anything bad about my parents. I'll never have my own children, but I empathize with my relatives and friends when they encounter this with their own kids.

2

The Little Mermaid is awesome in Swedish. Not only is Sissel Kyrkebo a fenomenal singer and really matches the hype of Ariel's voice but the witch is glorious. She has the most amazing swag and the lyrics to Poor Unfortunate Soul is bolder. I have never heard an actor in musical or other surpass her, though Titus Burgess is in a league of his own.

I can see the rationale for that argument, but it's another one of those dramas that I take for face value without reading into any themes. Although completely off-topic, I have not-so-secretly anymore wished Dalja would end up with the EGJ character due to his gentlemanly ways. I'm so over seeing couples-to-be in dramas butting heads in order to realize their love since I'm a hopeless romantic. What an exhausting way to find true love.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

The convention last weekend was fun, but very exhausting. My friend and I went to bed practically as soon as we got back home, but as I am learning, that is what sensory overload feels like. There were plenty of pastries and cake slices left for breakfast after that long beauty sleep, which started the week off well.🍰

The calories were necessary to survive this week, because a lot of supposedly future changes suddenly got moved up to this week. It has been chaotic to implement the changes while also still recovering from last weekend. For that reason, I am treating myself to another lazy Saturday tomorrow to finally recharge properly. Everything will fall into place after that.🙏🏻

I wonder what makes a Kdrama a *really* successful drama. Like Crash Landing on You, Crash Course in Romance, Reborn Rich, etc.

I feel like stars have to align or something.

I mean all scripts must seem interesting when the actors sign on and yet the results can be soooooooo different.

I’ve been imagining an alternative storyline where she stayed, prevailed and contrary to her birth circumstances became a class traitor/liberator and was an instigator for systemic change ahead of Yul who in my imagined storyline was inspired by her example and joined her efforts. I would love to have seen that version. Sigh.

I feel like I'm probably being annoying but I just have alot of random thoughts haha
My current random thought: I wonder what kind of acting project I would like to see Lee Seung Gi in.

I was reading over comments from the law cafe and I saw one that mentioned they were mad Jeong Ho was such a liar and it made me think "I wonder if I would like to see Seung Gi play a devious liar type character". Maybe a con man? A meek character?
I don't know.
I just want projects where I can't believe he's the same guy from my girlfriend is a gumiho.

It's always so hard for me to imagine roles or situations which maybe kinda weird considering kdrama characters tend to fall into certain boxes (though maybe that's changing more these days)

You might be interested in a non-drama Lee Seung-gi fix. I can recommend the delightful travel reality show on Netflix US: TWOGETHER (2020) (8 eps.). Jasper Liu joins LSG as they travel to six Asian cities. They have missions to complete in each city and the experienced (and a bit devious) LSG often takes advantage of the rookie Jasper. It is a mash if Korean, Mandarin but mostly English. I loved it.

I saw that before I saw him on 1n2d and it's so funny to see how he's changed into the variety "guru/master/veteran" from his maknae days.

He really is mischievous scamp at times such as when he charmed one of the local merchant to give him something and the PD came in to shut it down haha.
Oh! And then there was the time he gave the PD homecooked food and then when the PD tried to make them pay for something so Seung Gi brought up and then the PD backed down.

I just finished watching Crash Course in Romance and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yeah, the end was tied up a little too rushed and neat but it made sense with the rest of the story. Good thing "mom" left soon but it helped cement the true mom-daughter relationship and the killer guy at least made a point about not really knowing anyone's intent all the way. At least it made sense even if it was kind of dumb. Anyway, the leads were delightful as the always are and boy, the looks he gave her made my heart flutter. The kids really carried their part of the story and so did the bratty moms being bratty til the end. No drama is perfect, some more, some less so but overall the cast carried this one for me and I'm glad I watched it.
