My biggest takeaway from the ending of THE GLORY was that I HATE split seasons. I will not do it again. It is too burdensome to binge 8 episodes to finish without spoilers and trying to remember secondary characters popping up on the screen. There was no reason for it (the show was filmed straight through) except for Netflix's anal retentive marketing plans.

The second best drama of 2023 was the SM Entertainment take-over battle. But like a lot of k-dramas, the last episode fizzled to a conclusion with HYBE dropping out of the bidding leaving Kakao to overpay for 40 percent controlling stake in the carcass of the industry giant. HYBE needed to diversify quickly because BTS military service is going to greatly reduce revenues. Kakao and the new SM 3.0 executives are going to push for AI artists and groups which is going to offend and push out many current producers and singers.

I was reading a webtoon about virtual idol bands (which was making it harder for real, human idols to break into the industry or maintain popularity) and I had no idea this was actually a thing. That's so weird.
Robots really are going to end up taking over the world, aren't they?

There are already a couple of idol groups with AI “members” - I’m old so I’m like “rhat’s a ridiculous gimmick, it’s basically an elaborate cartoon” but if you grow up used to that (especially if interactions in an immersive online space increase) I can see that a younger person might have a different opinion. I think it’s pretty creepy.

I don't understand why people keep talking about spilt seasons as being a hassle because they can't remember what happened in the first half; can't you just rewatch the first half?

With The Glory in particular, I think they had a recap/overview of pt 1 before pt 2 was released.

Neither The Glory neither Island were good enough to make me rewatch the first part. The time between the 2 parts wasn't long enough to rewatch it or short enough to remember everything.

heat - March is hot - spring is what i enjoy but feels like summer.

If summer act like a summer then upcoming months gonna be pretty fun. Season need to shine and if summer is playing beautifully then you can expect good storms - that much energy needs to escape and that brings in storms, strong storms into the game.

Time to enjoy the cherry blossom for at least one week.

XI - scored home run - oh man - you can get jealous. this guy.

Imran - cricketer turned politician - made huge impact

Neto - people had it coming. earlier you were supporting him, then you were slightly against his work and now cokpletely against him because things aren't good for you. the typical delusional facemasks n privileged class. least sympathy for them but atleast with this protest they are trying to redeem themselves. neto baldy played same stupid shot that many other machismo do all across world. from putin to erdogan to duterte to bolso

there are many more strongmen who play more conservative and less public machismo but all in all human world works out in very similar style of direction.

I have put Aug-May for months - let's see how it goes.

vote - why - never did - u can escape one too even if law forces u to do. Our system says to avoid politics -
that means - no vote , no participation in any political activity.

I said in 2022 want 3rd and 4th front. from 2010 - and now is 2023 - woah - that's how much foolish our system is. Once a path is taken everyone walks on - This is why i always talk about change -
with change u can expect - a group - virtual - then a real group - then u can get approval by law - party name, members, flag, slogan, constitution, ideology, objectives and goals, positions, appointments and more.

trouble is - system says no politics - if there can't even be an virtual group, leave alone having unofficial real one.

Seems like it's upto me to turn things around.

Its absolutely amazing that in less than 10 years and with only a handful of roles under his belt Junho has somehow managed to establish himself as a legitimate actor free of "talentless" stink associated with idols-actors.

The only other person i can think of who's pulled it off that quickly and effectively is Uhm Jung-hwa.

yo happy friday.
a non korean drama movie: The Last Sentinel. This is a curious project. There was a script and a Hollywood production company, they were looking for location, ended in Estonia. then they hired local producer, most of the staff and sound and effects department, and even director, tanel Toom. Four actors, who stayed here 3 months.
you see, I have been obsessed with apocalypse movies for the past half a year. and I have watched 47 of them. No kidding. But this is the best one - hands down! that I have seen.
I HIGHLY recommend it. It shows why moviemaking is as much about what you DON´T see - and what they are NOT telling you, as it is the story.
The script is SUPERB. The tension keeps up until the very last second. You can not predict ANYTHING. The use of sound is also excellent here.
If it should be screening near you, go see it. NB! I saw it at a museum and it didn´t have the surround sound. that is a must!

other than that, last week was hard. I am frustrated about some friends still trying to use me, get me to do stuff for them after disrespecting me and siding with bullies over and over. I will NOT be taken advantage of again. I have learned to keep it brief. Jut state my decision, no explanation needed. I dont owe it.

Korean culture club: gonna talk about the mascots, symbols, characters - like Boogi the seagull from Busan. Or how friggin cute is the lighthouse Deungdaeri? On one hand I read how the symbols are immensely popular, but I think the current president doesn´t favor such things much, and he decreased the budget of the cultural sector? Thinks that high tech and business tourism is more important than "cutesy" things. However I think not only tourism but people need some relief from the seriousness, hence the popularity of such cute mascots. I think it is very therapeutic but of course it takes resources, and you must hire people to wear costumes, or if you have a statue, it needs to be maintained etc.
And funny how gender neutrality has invaded Korean mascots, Posuni for example. it doesnt look neither as a he or a she now. wonder why it is necessary, what was wrong with an obvious policeWOMAN?

anyway, it is interesting and it also cheers me up a lot.

My daughter and I are going to a quilt show in Pensacola, FL tomorrow and plan to eat at either Lee's Korean BBQ and Hotpot or Kalbi Ichiban. We're still undecided. Also going to hit up every Korean and Asian market we can find to restock my pantry.

I know this month is supposed to celebrate women, but I just want it to end so I can go back to pretend that having my period is the worst part of being a woman.

I'm sorry but the last thing I like to talk as a woman, is about being a woman. All those conversations end up in traumatic revelations, suppressed memories coming back to the surface and nightmares.

I think the most disturbing conversations I've had in my life are "the casuals 'this happened to me' girl talks", and this month reminds me of all of them.

I guess watching Doña Diabla wasn't enough to help me recover from Nanette, that conversation with my friend, that (old) news, and that freaking Greenpeace email.
Maybe I should go for something stronger like Lady Vengeance, Ahgassi, Audition or Hard Candy... I think I'm a little angry. LOL. I should chill and watch Moonlit Winter.

So... anyone else feeling great this month? 🙈😆😖

By the way, anyone watching Peak Time. Lee Seung Gi is killing me, for real. He was the highlight of this week. "He doesn't need to hide his bald head, instead he should hide that cap" that's what I thought when he started joking about the 3mm.

Tbh, this show is saving me.
It's the only thing I can't overthink. The only thing that gives me energy and doesn't take it back later.

Hopefully this will change for you. I hate talking about myself, but I happen to like celebrating any month that wants to fix the historical wrongs that society imposed on its subgroups, especially women and Asian-Americans. That being said, hoping more happy memories are created for you as a woman. I tend to complain a lot about women's injustice, but given the choice, I'll always choose being a woman to any alternatives.

I feel the same tho. Despite everything, I wouldn't choose to be anything else. I'm proud of being a woman and I love my fellow girls.

I'm not really into KPop and this is my time watching a show like this but I'm wondering if the dancing is the most appealing part of a KPop group. This week was the dance stages and it was even called the highlight of the collab challenges.

I really thought Group B was going to win. I thought them and Group C (I think that was the team that won) were definitely rightly chosen as the leads for the #1 spot but I was still surprised by the final results.

This is my first time seeing Seung Gi as a host like this

I do!
I'm a little behind (ep 7) but I still enjoy the show.
I like all the members. Since I've watched the whole first season I feel comfortable with everyone (and I'm an ahgase -GOT7 fan- so I'm happy Bam is now part of the crew).

The only problem I find is that the PDs didn't hire a new leader. Since day 1 they seemed kinda lost. Seung Gi was great at leading the group, taking the first steps, helping the others, reacting to the masters... I miss him. 😔

0

@enriquequierecagar I have only watched a couple of episodes of S2 and that was mainly because I wanted to see what the dynamic was without Seung Gi. I *thought* the former baseball guy & BamBam were going to somehow fill the space Seung Gi left but all they do is make me miss him more.

I don't know what he did or how he led the show but apparently he was doing something. Then I thought Eun Jiwon is a bit of a variety veteran and he was a leader in his group so he could step up but I've never seen him take a leadership role in the variety shows I've seen him in. I guess Se Hyung is better at bouncing off of people? I don't know.

I really can't explain the dynamics. All they have to do is talk and engage with the masters and yet it seems to different. Maybe Seung Gi's jumping up and calling out things made a difference.

You have no idea how much I want to talk about this show & its changes.

1

@britney If you watch the first episode of season 2 you can see their personalities. All the boys are the same. They can't enter their master's house, no one wants to be the first one.

Bambam is the maknae and the other ahjussi is new to variety shows so I doubt they could lead the group.
And after the first episodes we know that they are as soft (and scared) as the rest of the members. They all give me a similar vibe, we need someone to break that. And that was Seung Gi 🥺

We have a lot of members but it feels empty...
I think the only way we forget about the emptiness is when we have a master that can lead them. If the master is a variety pro the boys seem more relaxed and are able to do their job better.
I wonder what's going to happen in the future... I hope Seung Gi comes back.

Here's my unglorious confession about a certain revenge-drama. I watched it with high hopes because I like badass FLs. But as someone who has suffered from bullying in distant past, I couldn't find a single relatable incident or character, let alone the heroine. All I could see was gratuitous violence, a bunch of hedonistic characters with the common goal of brazenly advertising luxury brands, an elementary school teacher who can surprisingly afford two luxury cars without going to school for a single day while she is busy planning a glamorous revenge. I was just about done when he revealed that his choice of bride in an arranged match was based on a brand of clothes. Yes, revenge shouldn't be glorious. But it shouldn't be glamorous either 🤣.

May I ask what drama? I'm not one for revenge dramas myself, but I do like badass females dishing out justice. I think that's why Agency was such a refreshing drama, even if the FL may not be relatable by every woman. If you ignore the details and watch for the pro-female message, perhaps that may be more your line of revenge?

Required fields are marked *

I'm talking about The Glory. Revenge is not my genre either. I don't even know why I got into this one. I guess, I wanted some vicarious satisfaction as I couldn't respond when I was bullied myself. I found it to be very shallow and unimaginative. Class divide is not the only thing that can create dangerous power dynamics among classmates. Somewhere an adult unknowingly plants the seed of that false sense of superiority in a bully's mind by favoring them over other kids. And that bias, if it comes from the school system, is most certainly based on academic performance. There are many Kdramas based on bullying, but not one truly addresses this root cause. School 2017 came close by atleast highlighting this type of class-divide exists.

Ah, I see. I skipped that drama because it wasn't very relevant to me, but given the prevalence of the topic, I'm assuming it is an issue. If this is something you continually face, perhaps reach out to an authority figure in your school or your parents? It's tough being a student, particularly if you're in a school system with minimal resources, but there's always help somewhere. Best of luck and my sympathies!

You meant to respond to Anne18 with this comment, yes? It's been 7 months since I got out my toxic environment, but mine was unrelated to school or educational issues. But I appreciate the encouragement and will share it with Anne18! 😁

2

@wheguhreh sorry unless I tagged you in I had to answer this point earlier in the conversation.

0

Oh yeah, thank you. I wish no one to be in that position again. It leaves scars on the mind of a child. Much more real than those shown in The Glory 🤣. But in a way I'm thankful it didn't happen in high school, so I was able to outgrow it with the encouragement of kinder teachers. Too much competitiveness and pushing students to chase certain academic goals through comparison/ fear is something I abhor to this day. It was the reason that triggered that toxic environment. Even if grading system cannot be abolished completely, educators and guardians shouldn't be using it to discriminate among and judge children's natural abilities. I believe such nagging adults are either the first step in the chain of bullying or the reason children grow a poor self esteem. A teacher starts a hierarchial system of preference, the kids very likely follow suit among themselves. My grades steadily improved because I regained my confidence via a kind teacher's encouragement. A few years down, I see a teacher threatening my classmates about failing them in year-end exams. That was his way of encouragement 🙄. Even I felt it was too harsh. Do they really have to publically humiliate kids every time? It was middle school. I think I gave a gentle encouragement to my friend who was thus 'encouraged'. It wasn't that she lacked the ability, she just had different interests. She reached out when we we started college. I'm proud that she's doing very well and remembers me to this day.
PS: sorry for the blabbering. Every child, at any academic-level, is like a flower. Water them with care so they can bloom on their own, instead of shriveling them up with too much heat, if you are in a position to do either.

3

@anne18 I’m sorry you had to go through that. I once met a bad teacher, too. I learnt first-hand how encountering one can ruin a student’s life. That’s part of the reason I became a teacher.

Every good teacher knows that when we praise someone, we praise them in public. When we want to improve any behaviors, we tell the students in private. And it’s the behavior that is problematic, not the student themselves.

The profession comes with great responsibility and hard work. However, students look up to their teacher and the teacher has authority to do many things. It’s sad to acknowledge that there are also not so good teachers out there. It’s my dearest hope that students won’t meet such people.

2

@mmmmm I didn't know how else to say this. But I really want to add this part. I understand a teacher's authority and responsibilty is great, but in the execution of both he/she should not be putting too much trust in the grading system to guide them. My first school was a Montessori school, and I'm an advocate of that system - getting to know each child personally beyond grades. What happened to me in second grade after transferring to a large public school was not because the teacher was particularly bad, but because she didn't bother to know her students as individuals separate of their grade sheet. To help me, a mid-year transfer student, catch-up, she entrusted someone she favored because of her good grades. Now this girl was a good student, but not a nice kid. She had interpreted the teacher's favor as some authority she had over other kids. Being a quiet kid struggling with maladjustment made me an easy target for her and her clique. (God bless her, you'd have to be quite something to be a clique queen at that age 🤣). I had a hard time that year. I felt like I had no voice in that school which stressed on academic excellence beyond anything.
Since then, I've grown to appreciate teachers who pay equal attention to the last kid in the class, and acknowledge that kids can have abilities beyond grades. Like Mr Shim in the drama School 2017. Have you watched it? Please do if you haven't. Some parts of that drama are so real.

TGIF, beanies!

After another week I want to flush down the toilet, I'm looking forward to a relaxing weekend of minimal things I have to do and more interesting kdrama viewing. I just finished VIP, which reminded me of how unfair professional life can be but worth the pursuit of happiness regardless. If anything, the cinematography fitted my mood.

I'm not sure what to watch next since I'm in a blah mood, but I'm looking forward to something mindless for a change since I'm finally feeling more or less recovered after being under the weather for most of the week. Also enjoying the about-to-rain actual weather after months of annoying sunny days with no snow in the middle of winter on the East Coast (take that, global warming!). Hopefully many early showers will bring May flowers!

3

@britney depending on the post you can respond to a post on the day it is posted and get crickets!

I check the beanies section regularly and like or respond to posts there because I know that some posts are really quiet and if someone has made the effort to put some thoughts together it’s nice if they get acknowledgment. Sometimes if there is a busy weecap post with pages of comments then I might miss some of the other posts but that doesn’t happen often.

The main reason why comments are helpful even years after the drama has aired is that people come to dramas at all times and want to see what people thought of it so seeing a recent comment is always nice so you know whether the drama has stood up to the test of time or not.

I also try to read the later comments as people are in different time zones and have commitments that may keep them away from the site until later in the week.

Life update:
I went to a 90s/00s party. It was a bit of a culture shock to be outside with a big group for the first time in over 6 months.
I got sick last night. My head and stomach ache. I hope it doesn't last long.

Music

Hamilton: listening to the whole musical in a course of 4 or so days. I love the bookends that are Alexander Hamilton and Who Live, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story?
It's named Hamilton because it tells Eliza's story as much as it does Alex.
Miley Cyrus: I need to give her album another listen
Top 100 united: mainly hip hop an Latin music.
Disney Channel on YouTube has playlist of just the music videos
Descendants 2, 3:
HSM 1, 2:
Teen Beach 1, 2:
Camp Rock 1, 2:
Cheetah Girls 1, 2, One World: thus is my superior trilogy
Zombies 1: I need the rest of the movies.

I want more. I hope I get Disney+ back so I can watch Miley'back yard session. And Grown-ish and MT: LB & CN.

My ultimate DCOM musical ranking is:
Cheetah Girls
Descendants
HSM
Zombies
Hannah Montana
Let It Shine
Camp Rock
Teen Beach
Lemonade Mouth
Sneakerella

Honestly, I adore Teen Beach movie but this speaks to how good the others are.

Editing:

Elizabeth the Jaded: on ch 8 posting wise. I'm editing ch 13 next week. I need feedback but I don't want to bug anyone. Maybe some messenger friends.
As It Could Have Been: book 3 of PoT saga. Jain is doing well. Still depressed sleeping any chance she gets. Aimee is 99 pounds at 5'5" and everyone just found out about her addiction. Tenielle realizes it's okay to be aromantic and she feels companionship towards D.
I need to add a scene to chapter 5. But it will because because it's from EtJ.

Writing:
As It Is: working title of book 4 of PoT. I will start typing this week.
Power of Three: book 5. Final volume. No progress this week. I really thought I'd done something at least but nope!
Silence is Not Golden: I didn't do a chapter in a week. And I didn't start typing. Maybe April. Writing Ri talking abut sex was more difficult than writing all of Ney's sex scenes combined. I had to give the vibe of wanting to but also being unwilling at the same time. I wish this girl wouldn't set expectations for herself.
Grant:Ney: picked up for one day to start a scene. But didn't know how everyone would interact. Would like to write Thanksgiving this month.
From Surviving to Thriving: I've finished a couple scenes. But next week would like to finish January 2011. I huess i should stop adding new shows. But I can write during shows now.

Reading: I read like 3-4 days this week.

The director who takes me to dinner: The sexi-ness! All it takes is his voice ti make the director hard? Why the blund date Dongbaek? Director is so jealous. Donghaek's heart is racing!!! Is Denis I'm this one? I'm sad they...

Yes!

I was recently thinking about how sometimes I don't like or can't get into things that seem super popular and successful. Like I recently watched Happiness and I didn't feel like it was some gem of a show and yet I saw people say how they loved it and other praise. I just hated most of the characters.

I couldn't get past the first episode of Crash Landing on You. I think I got up to the part when she got caught in the tree.

I know "to each their own" and all that but sometimes when I see these really popular shows, all I can think is "I wonder what the big deal is"

I've watched popular shows too (squid game, the glory, reborn rich, a business proposal, etc) and even those I still didn't understand what made them hit the way they did.
The things I liked about them probably aren't the same things others liked about them.

I feel like I can usually tell why a drama is popular - to a certain extent. Some sensational storyline or famous actor or something. But I know that I sometimes have very different tastes than the average Korean viewer who is going to show up in the ratings, for instance. And rightly so, I'm not Korean. I more often find it frustrating in the other direction, so not "Why is this so popular?" but "Why is this thing (that is so great!) not very popular?". Some really popular shows I know just aren't for me (Squid Game), and I'm generally pretty comfortable nowadays just liking the things I like and not feeling weird about it. It's always a shame to me, though, when I really love something and it doesn't do very well.

That's a bit how I felt about The Law Cafe. I know that it wasn't a masterpiece or going to necessarily go down in history amongst the classics but it was disappointing to me when it wasn't received better.

I think it was still considered successful but I still wanted it do better.

Like to me, it was better than one dollar lawyer at least. (Again, I don't think it was a flawless classic but I just mean overall. And being honest, I might sound biased haha)
Oh my god that show! Haha
I will say it was my first time seeing a drama like that; it did hard turns as if 2 different shows were smashed together. The season was shortened for some reason.

I think with The Law Cafe I would have enjoyed it more if I had stayed away from other people’s opinions. I had really high hopes but it wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be, which made it seem worse than it was, if that makes sense.

Yeah, that's one of the downfalls of not only watching things in real time but seeing others' takes on it; the influence others's opinions have can filter your own intrepretation or how you view the show.

I don't think I ever had any expectations so it wasn't a big deal to me when things played out the way they did. One thing it did do was make me wish I could read the original webtoon but alas there's no english translations anywhere.

And one of the things I saw here was people say the show was trying to do too much (I don't see how but I don't think like others here haha) or they didn't like/enjoy it as much as they wanted but they also couldn't pinpoint what they would remove or change if they could.

Kim Yuri is still my favorite character. I admire her so much.

2

I totally get this. Sometimes I think dramas do much better with a binge-watch after the fact, or just not reading critical comments. Sometimes I LOVE critical comments and the conversations that go along with them, but sometimes I just want to enjoy whatever I was enjoying about the drama, even if it isn't perfect.

8

@jls943 I agree I prefer a binge watch over live watching as sometimes the week to week wait leads to disappointment or frustration which would have been avoided. Love to hate you was the perfect binge watch I don't think it would have stood up to scrutiny if it had been stretched into a 2.5 month season.

7

@jls943 yes! I totally agree about the binge watching or not having the critical comments to filter your opinions. I also like critical comments sometimes especially if it gives insights that I could never think of myself.

One of the things that amuses me thinking back on the show (but it amused me then too) is the fact from the very start Jeong Ho was saying how her business model was ridiculous and she would lose money, her take was she wanted to provide legal counsel & support/comfort to people and damn the technicalities, he could figure that stuff out and that's EXACTLY what ends up happening. If she had any other landlord, she might be evicted haha.
Maybe in the future, the consultations are the price of a cup of coffee but the actual legal work will be charged more (still a discount but still)

I completely understand where you coming from. I had to start Crash Landing several times. Let’s face it…the initial premise is very silly but once you get past the scene of her being up in the tree, it is so worth it. I’ve watched over 60 dramas and it is one of my all time favorites.

On the other hand, some popular dramas that I believe are very overrated are Goblin, Strong Woman Do Bong Soon and My Love from the Star.

I often do not like things that other people seem to love. This is not just about k-dramas, I'm the same way about many novels, movies, tv from UK or US, etc.

I'm usually disappointed that I don't enjoy the things that others find delightful. That said, the things I do like give me so much pleasure. I will rewatch or re-read them again and again.

I like Dramabean's comments & recaps a lot; they are their own type of entertainment. I'll read about a show that I stopped watching to find out what happened, or to see if I made a mistake by quitting, or to see if anyone else hated it as much as I did. Sometimes this convinces me to try again to watch a show.

These days I'm watching Flower of Evil, one of the most praised dramas in the last years. I have watched seven episodes and I don't find it so great. Sometimes it seems a makjang, sometimes the acting is exagerared, some dialogues are weird, not natural.
I don't mean it isn't good but I thought it was going to be better.

Something similar happened with Vincenzo.

Let me tell you a secret, of how to binge-watch kdramas if you want to protect your heart and continue watching for more than 15 years:
Never binge-watch a show BECAUSE of all the praise you've seen for it everywhere. If you see so much praise that you feel you can't curb your curiosity anymore, first find a reason why YOU would want to watch it. I watched FoE because I love Lee Jun Ki and Moon Chae Won. Yes it was ridiculous, but it was fun. If I had watched it only because of the popularity with no self-investment, I would have been rather disappointed. But because I love the actors very much I was able to take it very lightly.
I don't always take my own advice, and I have been burnt many times. But at least I try to.

I think this is a good point. I tend to watch recommendations because they are the type of drama I want to watch. If it doesn’t work for me I walk away usually it is because the drama hasn’t aged well or I dislike a character or theme. None of these factors are likely to change for me but occasionally I will try to hold out on the off chance it will redeem itself. Yes, Three Brave siblings I am talking about you; the poster drama for why hate watching doesn’t ever bring joy 😬

1

@britney NOBODY is watching Three brave siblings and taking it seriously. It’s a weekender so should have a captive audience but the story had to get really stupid to gain the figures and most of them probably just had it on in the background while they were vacuuming! The numbers went up but no one cares about the characters.

2

Thank you!! :)

I am very selective with k-dramas because I'm quite new (a year and a few months) and I know I can't watch what everybody else has watched along the years. But my Plan to watch list has more than 160 series, so the selection is big... XD

I only can rely on my own intuition and other people reviews to decide what to watch next.

Flower of Evil was on my list only for the high marks everywhere.
After this year and a half watching k-dramas (almost 90) and two c-dramas I can say that my favorite genre is slice-of-life, and that Asians really know how to do it. However... thrillers are another story.

Maybe because premise seemed interesting? I think I did know of Lee Joon Gi from lawless lawyer (don't know why I watched that either lol) and I knew Moon Chae Won from shining inheritence (but I liked her most when she guested on Running Man with Seung Gi).

Anywho, I liked the show. Particularly the relationships. The lead characters and their daughter. I don't know if the reporter and Joon Gi's character would be considered frenemies haha

FoE popularity is still baffling to me because, honestly, why now? LJG has been constantly putting decent-to-great performances for like 2 DECADES now, how come it was the first drama that made so many people actually see it? It's not even his best work, drama or acting wise! Yet it got both hype and critical acclaim... I was very glad for him and everyone else in the show, but I just don't get it.

LGK has been a famous heartthrob for 2 decades. The only reason it SEEMS like FoE has suddenly made him famous is because of social media and the younger generation of non-korean audiences that have discovered kdramas more recently.

4

@midnight, I thought that younger international generation widely discovered him during Moon Lovers craze *scratched head* And korean audience no matter what age didn't really need to do any re-discovery because they've never forgot him in the first place. Dude's one of Hallyu pioneers and THE OG flower boy, not just any heartthrob which SK has so many. One may argue that they DID forget for a while WHY they loved him so much... But that we should "thank" SK bitchy government for. And his lack (to put it mildly) of desire to do mainstream romance shows to maintain trendy status. Maybe it's just stars finally aligned the right way for him and his loyal fans, who knows)))

3

It's so surprising to me when I footage from his "flower boy" days. Like how is he the same guy?! Is it the hair?!

Cause even now he still sometimes has the fuller face.

I really don't know when I learned of him but I did see The King & the Clown (I think that's what it's called) and I don't know if I knew he was the same guy in Lawless Lawyer.

1

@Britney, yes, The Hair - and 15+ years between then and now, during which he went through A LOT both career wise and as a person and it shows. Quite literally 2 different guys)))

How dare you! Not liking Happiness is a blasphemy LOL))) *sigh* You're not alone in that though, other people also didn't love it as much as I and many others did because... how to put it? It's a show with super stressful setup, full cast of flawed characters and very hard to digest topics raised. Some hated characters - all of them. Some couldn't stomach all the injustice and violence. Some questioned final resolution and overall logic. Some just clicked on the wrong drama it seems))) Which is fine as long as those who didn't like don't start the hate train. I'm tired of good shows being bashed unfairly even more than I'm tired of mediocre shows becoming universally loved hits. Most of which I also can't stomach no matter what when it comes to k-dramas. Thankfully I've always been rather... peculiar with my tastes so it's been ages since I just accepted the fact and moved on completely from berating myself for not getting with the flow. Embrace your individuality, be rebellious and proud about it!)))

Heard a news piece recently about how movie trailers don’t always match the movie resulting in disappointing sales and movie watchers. I suspect some kdramas also suffer from this promotional mismatch to the final product. For example the current drama Our Blooming Youth had such flowery pastel character posters and couple poster as the main poster that many viewers were upset when it was a darker historical mystery with light (so far) romance. I don’t think this bait and switch works. Anyone know of a show that it did work?

Yeah, I've found that genre keywords to be much more accurate than promotional materials. I know one Beanie (can't remember who) saw the word "suspense" or something on the Viki page for Summer Strike, and I think that could have saved a lot of people a lot of heartache and time. I don't know why there is often a mismatch between promotional material and actual drama, and I've never seen it done well that I can think of. I think you're right that it's much more likely to end in disappointment than anything else. For Our Blooming Youth, for some reason I did not go into it expecting it to be something different than it is - I think because so many of the promos were up front about what the set up would be (cursed ML and falsely accused FL) and I assumed that would be a majority of the plot regardless of the posters.

@Reply1988, then don't, because it IS scary - and not just because of zombie gore. Regular non-infected humans there are FAR more terrifying than any bloodthirsty monsters. That drama is STRESS personified.

1

Yes, I know to stay away🤣 I have a feeling I accidentally watched an episode of Kingdom because I didn’t know there could be sageuk horror. I just remembered the hero finding people that were being held captive in a camp they had a weird plague that was activated by something I think there were some insects involved and at one point they came out of the camp to attack the main town. Thankfully, I only watched some of the drama and thought it was too weird/scary to continue. It was sometime later I heard about Kingdom and had a light bulb moment.

Just finished watching the 2021 Chinese short web (18 ten minute episodes) time-travel (ML time travels to current day) drama, Emperor or Boss. For a short web drama it was surprising good. Overall, a very cute, fun drama.

I've now watched 5 short web dramas with Yang Ze as the lead actor (the other four were: The Killer is Also Romantic, Destined to Meet You, Bossy Husband Who Loved Me (waiting for season 2), and The Origin of Eternity). All have been good. As it relates to these short dramas, he certainly knows how to pick winners. Unfortunately, he's only had support roles in full length dramas.

While not a Yang Ze drama, another really good Chinese short web drama is Night of Love With You. The storyline itself is somewhat reminiscent of Extraordinary You where all of the action takes place inside a comic/manga. The female lead, who in all of her past comic/manga roles has been the villain, suddenly finds herself due to a glitch in the comic as the sickly heroine (bad clothes and all). She's a pretty engaging character, both strong and somewhat manipulative. The male lead is the villain of the drama.

This drama clocks in at about 4 hours in total and Tencent has combined all of the episodes into one on their youtube channel. Overall, this drama has good production quality, sound track, plotline and acting.

I don't know.

On your fanwall, you can post what you want but the number of characters is very limited, so if you want to write more, you can write on word or other and copy / paste.

If you follow someone, you get a notification if this person posted a comment.

For the abbreviations, I'm not sure what are talking about. We often use abbreviation for the name of the dramas but you can ask if you don't know and the actors.

It's because if you click on Beans (at the top), you can see the last posts on the different fanwalls or the last comments in the different topics.

Beanies are very friendly and helpful so just ask here and people will respond. You can also ask people directly in response to a comment if there are abbreviations of the dramas or initials for the actors you don't understand.

Following someone or them following you does nothing at this moment in time. You just get notified if someone follows you.

You get notifications when someone likes or replies to a comment you leave on the main site or if they like or reply to a post on your fan wall. The most recent posts from beanies’ fan walls are shown on the Beanie tab and as you scroll down the page this also shows a selection of beanies so clicking on their picture here is another way to see their fan wall posts. The most recent comments on the main site are shown on this page too. You can use the button to go to the comment in context.

Beginner's Guide: no, not that I know of.

Fan wall: click on your avatar, top right corner, scroll down to "Fanwall". The place to gush about whatever you want (hopefully kdrama related but there's no rule about that). You are limited to 200 characters so if it's a lengthy post type somewhere else and paste it.

Beanie fan wall: at the top of this page, click on "Beanies". You will find recent posts from all beanies and can scroll away until infinity and beyond.

Abbreviations: commonly used ones are
FL= female lead. (I like to type it out in full but anyway).
ML=male lead.
SL= Second Lead.
SLS=Second Lead Syndrome
OTP= One True Pairing (it sounds so cringey like this)
ToD= Truck of Doom.
DB: Dramabeans.

Names of people are abbreviated into 3 letters (LJK = Lee Jun-ki) and dramas are also abbreviated, which sometimes gets confusing (MLFTS=My Love from the Star; CLOY=Crash Landing on You)

etc and so forth.

I hope this helps!

To further complicate things, you have to paste using the cursor and the toolbar - in Chrome or Safari, for example, click Edit then Paste. Keyboard shortcuts (Control-V or ⌘-V) don't work. Don't touch the keyboard after you paste or anything over 200 characters will disappear again.
