Our Blooming Youth: Episodes 15-16
by alathe
Another death sets the city in uproar! Meanwhile, our four protagonists start taking stabs in the dark at each other’s hidden identities, some of them more accurate than others. But one mystery continues to elude our hero: who precisely is this awful man our heroine claims to love?!
EPISODES 15-16
Rest in peace, Woodpecker Lady! You will be — well, perhaps “missed” is too strong a word. Still, accidental poisoning is harsh narrative retribution for being mean to Myung-jin for like fifteen seconds. Nonetheless, as our heroes deduce, that’s exactly what happened. The bracelet originally owned by Young is actually a hollow container for arsenic. Turns out, when Young grabbed Jae-yi’s wrist that fatal morning, it was to sneakily garnish her family’s meal with poison. Meanwhile, our Woodpecker gal — who, as it turns out, had a name all along! It’s SOO-HYANG! — inadvertently tipped poison onto her evening snack. Jae-yi is distraught: just how far back in their friendship was her best buddy plotting homicide?
Myung-jin’s also pretty miffed — why is he the last one to learn about the bracelet’s significance? Just what else have his friends been hiding up their capacious sleeves? Could it be that Eunuch Go is actually… his highness?! Okay, false alarm; everyone got very weirded out by that suggestion. But later, burning the midnight oil whilst devising a Joseon-style murder-board, we’re reminded that once in a blue moon, he can be very, very cool. Suave as anything, he recites his conclusions. Scholar Park, whose disappearance aligned with the prince’s, and who still, after all this time, can’t shovel? He’s Crown Prince Hwan. His eunuch must therefore be Min Jae-yi. And as for Myung-jin’s beloved apprentice? You, he thinks, are Jang Ga-ram.
Meanwhile, Hwan has also done the necessary math: he knows who Ga-ram is too — and that Jae-yi is determined that he protect her. He asks Jae-yi outright: where will she go once her name is cleared? Jae-yi considers. Get a house in Hanyang, she decides. Gaeseong has painful associations. But here, she can teach children their Hangul alphabet, and maybe solve the odd murder case with Myung-jin. (In Hanyang, she promises, wordlessly, I can catch a glimpse of your procession.) One thing’s for certain: she wants an apricot tree in the yard.
Hwan asks if she’ll think of him. Jae-yi pretends to consider. I’ll be reminded of you, she reasons, whenever the sun rises in the east. Come to think of it — that’s every day, isn’t it? (Cute.) Hwan admits that he’ll think of her too. Y’know. Occasionally. When he comes across an insubordinate eunuch, for instance. At this, they catch each other’s eyes and grin, while Hwan steadfastly refuses to admit that “occasionally” is the understatement of the century.
Alas, things are getting politically sticky: the king warns Hwan that his wedding is imminent. Half the court is in the Jo family’s stranglehold; it’s a forced move, but the only safe bet is for a union between Hwan and the Han family. Ever the dutiful heir, Hwan takes a breath, summons the fortitude of years of fierce repression, and prepares to forget he ever heard the word “feelings.” He casts the bracelet he bought for Jae-yi into the water — and, with it, his heart. But a careless word from Sung-on about Jae-yi’s leg injury puts this to the test. I’m no anatomist, but Hwan’s resulting alarm seems the tiniest bit heart-adjacent.
Jae-yi didn’t get the repression memo. As a reward for passing last week’s loyalty test, she’s got cakes from the king. Glowing with excitement, she hides them under Hwan’s desk — only for Hwan to storm in, berate her for lying about her wound, and deliver an excoriating list of her character flaws. (He doesn’t even have the grace to list them to a pond.) She’s loud! She selfish! She lacks maidenly virtue! Don’t get him started on her scandalous habit of drinking alcohol! She’s in love with some awful, awful man, and she never listens, and she fights everyone, and —
He ends, somewhat limply, by insisting that Jae-yi isn’t — isn’t beautiful. So there! This is the last straw. Sure! she cries. I’m so ugly the dimwit I love seems to hate me! She wishes him joy of the cakes she brought him; she’s off to clean the library and not to sulk in the slightest.
Although Hwan appears selectively deaf to exactly who Jae-yi is calling dimwit, his (still functional) heart’s in the right place. Handing Tae-gang a very specific checklist, he sets about finding the house of Jae-yi’s dreams. It’s a beautiful, spacious building, with desks for a school, the all-important apricot tree, and — naturally — a gorgeous view of the eastern sunrise. Later, he meets Jae-yi and graciously declares that he has a gift for her. Cross the bridge, take a left at the first fork in the road, and — okay, no, he can’t do this — who is he? Who is Jae-yi in love with??
Stunned and disgruntled, Jae-yi is faced with the unenviable task of describing Hwan to himself. Subtly. The man she loves is tall and handsome (Hwan bridles), excelling in both pen and sword (here, he scoffs). Jae-yi’s voice gentles: he has immense inner fortitude and compassion. He opened up a new path for a woman trapped in dire circumstances. Subtlety has long left the building, but Hwan, resolutely unimpressed, decides that this man is the stuff of trashy fantasy. (Harsh! Arguably, Our Blooming Youth is a very classy fantasy!) Jae-yi retorts that the man in question is an idiot for not recognizing himself.
But romance is only one concern: elsewhere in the palace, all is paranoia and dark revelations. Grand Prince Myungan is sick to the point of hallucinating. His sister and mother try to pacify him as he mutters fearfully about murder. He’s talking, it seems, to the dead crown prince — apologizing unnervingly to the empty air. He’s so sorry. He didn’t know his brother was taking medication. If he had… he would never have given him a peach.
Wide-eyed, the queen slaps a hand against his mouth. No one has heard — yet. Later, when it’s just the two of them, she hears his explanation in horror: Councilor Jo gave Myungan a box of peaches to share with his older brother. Frantically, the queen urges Myungan to forget anything ever happened. But alone, she rages. Councilor Jo bloodied her child’s hands; for this, she’ll rend him limb from limb.
Meanwhile, Hayeon, having lied unblinking to the king about Myungan’s distress — that girl’s quick in a crisis — elects to seek help. Who else but her steadfast older brother? Sadly, Hwan’s busy investigating leads incognito; she’s obliged to choose the second-best solution. Still half in shock, she confides in everyone’s favorite detective-eunuch extraordinaire: Jae-yi.
The palace holds further intrigue. Sung-on has been charged with accompanying his cousin, HAN SO-EUN (whose actress is, believe it or not, also Han So-eun), Hwan’s would-be fiancée. Sung-on already confides in her; besides Hwan, she’s the only one who knows of his complex loyalty towards Jae-yi. But So-eun keeps her own secrets closer to her chest. Every night, she burns mugwort, ostensibly to discourage bugs. But mugwort is used in mourning rituals. The Jo family suspect foul play: a rumor suggests her mother’s recent death has been hushed up. The king is desperate to bind the Han family to Hwan — but, without two living parents, her candidacy as princess is forfeit.
Back in the city, more secrets come to light. Further cloak-and-dagger shenanigans await our innkeeper couple; they’re smuggling supplies to Byeokcheon — including some awfully weapon-like sickles. In the meantime, they’ve more or less adopted Dal-rae and Meo-ru as their own. They’re determined the kids know there’s more to their heritage than bandit stereotypes. The people of Byeokcheon had empty stomachs but keen compassion: they’d share even the few scraps they possessed.
Dal-rae’s memories are hazy, but she recalls her best friend, OH-WOL. At this, both Bok-soon and Man-deok dissolve into tears. Oh-wol was their child, brutally cut down by Councilor Jo and his men — and the children’s parents, their best friends. But Dal-rae remembers more than the carnage of those last moments. Her mother once prayed to a brightly-colored fish said to be a thousand years old, a tradition upheld across the generations. This fish had no offspring, but its eggs could induce madness.
The mystery of Byeokcheon is beginning to unravel. To this end, Hwan aims to drop in on gambling addict Park Han-soo, the ex-commander whom Tae-gang has been tailing. They arrive just in time to interrupt him bleeding out in the streets. Councilor Jo is at it again: no one holds their tongue quite like a murdered witness. But Han-soo manages to croak out a few last, crucial words. Ten years ago, the Byeokcheon rebels never declared themselves an independent nation. Far from it. They hung white flags of surrender. They were slaughtered anyway. There’s more — Han-soo himself witnessed a woman from the Song family exit Councilor Jo’s residence… and enter the palace.
What a totally-not-significant time to check in on our queen! She looks thoroughly battered by the events of the day. Hayeon visits her, determined to extinguish her doubts. Myungan is the last person to have harbored ill intent towards the late crown prince; his sickness must have made him delusional. She will do all she can to cure him. After all, she adores the queen, whom she regards as a mother.
When Hayeon leaves, the queen is miserable and silent. Slowly, she writes an order. It is placed underneath the usual secret stone, and uncovered by Tae-gang. Assassinate Princess Hayeon, it reads. No sooner than this is issued, Hayeon is approached by Court Lady Kwon. There’s a monk in the city famous for his ability to cure the grieving, through use of forbidden sorcery. Needless to say, it’s dangerous. But Hayeon is determined: she and Myungan leave the palace under cover of night. As Tae-gang meets with Monk Moojin to share the assassination command, the queen sits alone, face glistening with tears. It’s so cold — did Hayeon dress warmly? Oof, I say. And oof again. That one hurts.
Meanwhile, our four heroes cluster around Myung-jin’s murder-board. Myung-jin’s finally connected the dots regarding the mystery of Tae-gang. Jae-yi saw him in the city when letters rained from the sky; simultaneously, he was by the burning tree. Myung-jin saw a black-clad Tae-gang in the streets who refused to recognize him; meanwhile, Tae-gang was at Hwan’s side in the palace. How could he be in two places at once? (The others wrinkle their noses in confusion.) The answer is clear: there are two of him! (Okay, now they’re milking it.) Hwan and Jae-yi exchange a glance of sudden realization. Tae-gang must have a twin!
With palace intrigue in superabundance, these past few episodes have been fun. What a brutally efficient way to illustrate — well, the queen’s brutal efficiency! Revenge-obsessed schemers who marry into the house of their enemy are my favorite thing. So far, the Byeokcheon plot has been incredibly compelling. Using Bok-soon and Man-deok to show that there’s a rich culture and community driven underground by political violence — and ordinary people suffering from the actions of the elite — was a masterstroke. I’m a fan of a sageuk that roots for the underdog, especially when stuff gets morally complex. Even the most vicious of the Byeokcheon schemers have reason for their tactics. It’s a nice contrast to Councilor “My Evil Laugh Gives Me Super Strength” Jo!
That said, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Hayeon’s survival: she’s too adorable to die! But this show certainly isn’t afraid to go there. As for our leads — I love how everyone’s beginning to suss out everyone else’s identity. I love even more that everyone’s scrambling to catch up with who knows what about whom. I even enjoy the spun-out ridiculousness of Hwan struggling to identify Jae-yi’s totally-a-mystery man; it adds to the general chaos that’s part of this show’s charm. And although I was lukewarm about the twin reveal, I actually like it in light of that muddled identity theme. This show truly knows what it wants: to have endless fun with alter-egos. And hey, I respect that. I can only hope that the explanation for Tae-gang’s twin is as twisty, unlikely, and oddly satisfying as everything else has been so far!

Thanks for the recap @alathe!
Random thoughts:
1) Honestly I was not shocked by any of the "big reveals" this week. The show would definitely have been better at 16 episodes.
2) I don't care at all for the new mystery related to the Han girl. If the king and Left State Council hid the fact that her mom died, she's not only disqualified but they have indeed given the Jo clan a reason to cackle. She seems like a convenient plot device, like the poor Woodpecker girl.
3) There's a new impediment to Jae-yi marrying Hwan and becoming Crown Princess: neither of her parents are alive. Yay.
4) I am VERY upset at the way the children are being treated. Poor little prince is going crazy because he thinks he's a criminal (did someone feed him a 1000-year-old fish egg to induce madness?) and the princess is being used and discarded by the cold-hearted queen. Argh.
5) I got to say, the queen might be the most compelling villain here if only she were given more screen time.
6) I think the only good thing about Right State Councilor is his taste in pottery. Goryeo celadon is indeed beautiful.

I agree with you on points 1-6.
The intricate network the Queen runs in the palace should have been the awakening but I didn't think it, despite the clearly-evil-from-day-1 court lady that served her.
I get if she's angry at the King, but to want to harm Ha-yeon who has been nothing but dependable is not it.

Her tears as she wondered whether the Princess was dressed warmly gave me chills. Oof indeed. That’s some super villain sh-t… I agree that she makes a great villain but also wish it could’ve been set up a bit earlier. I get they want a late reveal but I would’ve enjoyed seeing this actress more than cackle monster.
@wishfultoki on 1, I think the only thing I was shocked by was the Queen ordering Hayeon’s assassination. I knew she was involved but not that she would be so cold… as an aside, the Empress in the book was straight up Machiavellian, but this queen has been shown as so loving, I was surprised.
On 2, if they draw from the book, the deception around the prospective crown Princess should have bigger repercussions and reveal more nefarious agents… I don’t wanna spoil too much, and also they may deviate from the book more, but let me just say I wouldn’t be surprised if the Queen isn’t the only high ranking agent working with the Byeokcheon rebels. I’m interested how the drama will handle it, though. The crown Princess plot in the book had a lot of crazy elements they definitely haven’t included, but it was actually pretty great.

1. I was thinking more like a Lady Macbeth, but "Machiavellian" might be an apt term to describe her. I wonder what her end game is.
2. No please, no more nefarious agents! The only other "high ranking agent" I can think of would be Chief State Councilor (Myung-jin's father). He does hold control over half of the army, potentially. I'm used to seeing that actor play a villain so it's weird seeing him do nothing in this drama LOL.

Lady Macbeth is what she reminded me of too - she is already morning the Princess, doing what she thinks is necessary evil (apparently it's easier to get rid of royals than it is to rid of wicket murdering ministers).

@minniegupta1 I need them to explain, soon, why the Queen has the ability to order an assassination that easily and never did it to Councilor Jo home she loathes but does so on a drop to the Princess whom she appears to even love on some level? What’s happening?

@happyokaytales, I assume Queen wants to get rid of uncle dearest by framing him for Hwan's death and having him to be publicly executed for treason. She said as much - simple death is not enough, only thorough public humiliation, long suffering and begging in tears for final mercy will do. And I think she wants him to know who exactly orchestrated his downfall. Lady has been polishing her gloat speech for a decade now!

@happyokaytales It's quitge apparent - for all the power they seem to possess, the royals are just puppets, solely surviving on devotion and loyalty of others. A killed minister of Jo's nature would bring the wrath of entire Jo clan who can easily oust the King, spilt open a succession war and destabilize the kingdom, but a Princess dissappearing would not have much repurcussion. The previous Crown prince dropped dead, the current crown prince was nearly deposed and had close shave so many times, and not even a ripple in the Kingdom. Heck, the king is so weak that despite knowing someone tried to actually kill his ultra talented and uber brave son, yet he did not even try to find out who was behind it. It's outrageous how weak he truly is as a king. Little Go Sun Dol has more courage in her little finger than the entire 6 ft something body of the King has.
Hwan, once he becomes the king, will have his work cut out for him.
I find it interesting how they have characterised the current king and juxtaposed him with a super strong crown prince. It's something that can repeatedly found in Josean history where there were Kings who were nincompoop puppets producing off springs who went on to become some of the greatest kings they had. While this story might be fictional, the terribly tragic lives of many of these royals was a reality .

Hmm could it have something to do with the weird comment from the lady’s maid to the queen about the princess when she asked “should I give her to the chief minister of state?” I thought it was a translation error and it was supposed to something like chief of the rebellion (the monk and his gang of ninjas), but maybe the real chief minister MJ’s dad) is not just browbeatened husband who wants to go work on a farm?

Yes I had likewise dismissed it as an error, but I've listened to it again a few times and think it did say chief minister - viki's korean subtitles haven't gone up yet but will doublecheck when do.
But have to say chief minister's involvement in the rebellion wouldn't altogether surprise me - I've been worried ever since king gave him military forces rights. And he keeps repeating that Left Minister's neck is on the line - was the selection of the niece a set up to take out Left State Minister (and if so, by King or Chief State Minister or both???).
In turns of ultimate outcomes, I can also see it as a very convenient way of finding a partner for Myunjin (who under Kdrama rules has to find a partner by the end of the show!) - family punished for treason but he is spared due to help to the cause, but made a commoner; Garam freed and so they can marry (or happily investigate together...).

4 - King's weak ass attempt at being a doting father made me gag. Where have you been when your other (most likely only blood related) sons were dropping dead and driven into madness respectively, mister?

Looking back, it is ruly gut wrenching how awfuly frightening it must have been for Hwan to just survive and fight it out all alone. He is, all said and done, just a very young man shouldering some God awful responsibilities. And after all the progress he has made, he is suddenly faced with another loyalty test - the man Friday who helped him through the most difficult period of his life might not be what he seems, which endangers all the progress he has made in the last year.

Honestly I dunno how he's not lying sushi roll style in his room catatonic 24/7 yet. Dude's ability to collect himself fast in ANY situation, under ANY amount of pressure is something else. Yes, he cries, he barks in uncalled rage, he trembles in fear - but he never fully gives up. He's been locked in and seemingly deposed? He cries it out and the next day is back all calm, scheming his way out. His best friend and woman he loves are likely dead because of his plan gone wrong, and he's also bleeding out rapidly from a nasty wound? He drags himself forward on a sheer willpower and faint hope they may be alive after all. Daddy sells him off as a breeding horse, tearing his heart away in process? He sighs, throws some small tantrums and things - and focuses on limited amount of things he still can do, not even for himself, but for people around him. If only he didn't suppress himself so much all the time, he'd be basically unstoppable. I'm SO waiting for a moment when he's finally 100% done with living that way and breaks free. We're about to witness something epic - of a volcano erupting level.

@minniegupta1, I want him to go completely off rails tbh - loudly refuse to sit still and be married off, kick some Jo folks where it hurts, threaten the whole court into wet pants submission with that beaming fake smile of his, personally lead his guards into capital defense battle, scare the whole palace while barking orders in his top kingly voice, drown the court lady that spied on him in that pond, makeout with Jaeyi right in daddy dearest's shocked face before announcing he's marrying her and only her, spit on Queen's skirt and call her a snake, force feed the creepy monk all the poisonous flowers that can be found in Joseon, toss the King to rebels with "now we're even, finish this and go home" line, strut to and sit on the throne like a winner while still in bloodied clothes, drag Jaeyi into "library" caveman style and lock the doors from inside with a final royal vow to behead everyone who dares to bother them in the next few days. Sadly it's highly unlikely we'll get even 25% of that, but a girl can dream)))

To note, the King himself has bypassed the actual reqs for the selection of Crown Princess, asking Minister Han to fake her horoscope, so eventually it will be easier for Hwan to choose the Crown Princess (or will be his Queen) of his own choice.
The Queen is now sure to die, and I am thinking King is on his way out too. With Han having the power to move forces to protect the CP, there is definitely a battle in the horizon.
I am also thinking, the house will be eventually used to show as a place where the CP had hidden Jay-yi all this time, so she gains her respectibility back as a maiden in hiding under royal protection till the case was solved because she was CP's Master's daughter.

I am beginning to rethink my theory. The state ministers are too out of the game at this moment to come back in.

I thought all along that Princess Haeyeon was there to be his consolation prize but that’s sure twisted out of line now! It’s not about the same last name but the same clan. She would be allowed to marry into a different Han clan.
For example, King Taejong (Yi Bang-won) had concubines from 3 different Yi clans. IIRC

Hats off to Myung-jin. The guy is good at his craft.
While it was reasonable for me to suspect Tae-gang and man, the guy gave me no reason to doubt my suspense, I'm glad that he's in the clear. Another Byeong-cheon indigene positioned to harm the Royal Family? While I will definitely love that and yet glad it isn't it, what I will not be looking forward to even though it might happen is a showdown between he and his twin. But dang! That was a plot twist I was expecting but came almost a tad late if not late, for me.
I never expected less from Councilor Jo, not did I find something of this sort far from him, but I didn't think he'll descend into that. Using a 7-year old as an accessory to murder was simply scaring. I'm sure he was going to use that as a means of leverage over the him and the Queen if he does succeed in his plan to crown Myung-ahn as CP.
The weakest point here for me is the romance. I know they're endgame and that doesn't make that arc any less intriguing but I'm not too invested in their story. I like the banters and teases from both of them but that's just it. I don't even want her ending up with anyone, at least not now. Just solve the final mystery cases and leave the romances as an open ending but I know that's not happening. And talking about romantic tieing, I don't know about actual history, but I do know that having a dead parent or both dead parents have never prevented a FL from becoming Queen. So I'll like to see how that provides a conflict for Jae-yi when she's relieved of her masculine identity. I know they'll go political about Han So-eun but I hope it isn't something that culminates in Councillor Jo gaining an edge over the Han family and the Han family bowing their head in shame or resigning to fate as if they do not have the capacity to fight Jo. I'll be highly disappointed if they go this way.
CP Hwan is dumb. Anyone in his right senses will know she was referring to him. With the way he carries himself, I'm not surprised that he didn't even try to claim the identity of Jae-yi's fantasy guy. I don't know if it is growth or self-preservation.
The Queen is something else. Respects Ma'am.

I don't see any indication that Original Tae-gang knows Evil Tae-gang exists - no self-conscious or alarmed reaction when Jae-yi says she just saw him near the kitchens, just sarcastic mockery consistent with how he's spoken to her before. But this actor is not the most expressive, so that's hardly conclusive. Like @jerrykuvira, I want Original TG to be a good guy, if only to validate Hwan's trust.

I don’t think he’s an idol, just super green, and exactly 10 years younger than PHS, who isn’t exactly old himself (they celebrated their bdays together on set), so he is 21. I think his only other credit is as a child actor. So while he’s tall, he’s basically a baby. In one of the BTS, both Sonee and Hyungsik were calling him “agi” and teasing him.

Agree. It seems like the fact that he walked by the tavern folks and didn’t seem to recognize them at all implied he doesn’t know them. They should know his twin since I think the husband probably went on missions with him.
I agree that he seems to always have the cat dog relationship with JaeYi even when she asks him about being in a different place. He doesn’t seem like a quick enough thinker to be using snarky to hide facts.

I think Tae Gang is clueless. The fakester possibly makes sure he is never near the Prince or any other servants to escape notice. They also possibly has his movements and schedule down to pat so the fake one can work around it. The Queen's network possibly aids him actively (cue - the Eunich is suspicious of Guardian warrior and keeps a knife).

I think it would be really really hard to escape notice going in and out of the palace since he has to identify himself. It's a wonder nobody ever caught on.

I'm not convinced he knows nothing about his twin. He may not be the greatest actor in reality, but he may be the greatest actor in the Palace. What better way to engineer events and manipulate than to have two identical men deliberately be in two places at once and both working for the same cause? That's not to say Palace Tae-gang is as evil as his brother, but he may be very deluded and easily fooled into thinking he is actually helping and protecting the CP, so being used himself.

She definitely wants to end with someone lol! She is readying herself for pining for the rest of her life - not a very 'live my life my way' kind of of a girl, our Jay yi. Even her Head Eunuch thing that she said was only because she wanted to stick by Hwan. The poor girl is blind with love and devotion, and our CP keeps being crazy about her - in his head ( he gives her the looks, and but then verbally tells her he will miss her ONLY when he sees a clumsy Eunuch?).

You seem to have taken out her desire to be free entirely out of the equation. That’s an important theme of this drama even if she has fallen in love with Hwan. It isn’t as simple as that.

She wants to be free to make the choices, not necessarily to live independently. She has the courage to do so - which is why she has already chosen the way she wants to live (interestingly, opening a detective agency was not one of them, rather she would teach kids and maybe help out Young master at times). She has all the desires that any young girl has, be it ribbons or getting excited about getting a bracelet from the man she loves. We forget that she was completely OK to give up all semblance of freedom and be tied to a stranger for life - someone like her who effectively jumped cliffs, fought off dozens of soldiers, survived wounds that take big men down, took on the Crown Prince no less and solved murders at the risk of her life just to prove her innocence. I have mentioned it before - she is the kind of girl who knows where she has to be once the drinks are over. Given the limited opportunities noblewomen like her have in the Josean period, her choices were limited and still are. Without Hwan's support, it would still be an uphill battle to survive the conservative society as an unmarried orphaned girl whose worst nightmare in life is actually to be labelled as a woman of loose morals. The girls of this era had no rights, so falling prey to corrupt old politicians would just be a matter of time. Only with the support of someone as powerful as Hwan would she be safe anyway, no matter how liberal her thoughts are.

I don’t agree with your views. You minimise her agency and make her an appendage to Hwan. The entire point to this series has been to imagine the possibility of empowerment for a young woman - not a girl as that is patronising - such as Jaeyi.
Let’s agree to disagree

@dncingemma: And they have time and again retierated that she could only come so far because of Hwan. Before this she had to hide behind her brother's name. We are equating her ability to be free with the kind of freedom we have today. We need to remember she is happy having a man's name, even a fake one, because that was the only way she could actually speak her mind and be heard, only then she actually has agency. No matter how brave, talented, brilliant and progressive she is, she still could not do much unless she was 'allowed' at the end of the day. Which is why her progress to independence has to come where she can actually exercise it to make those changes for coming generations, give a better world to the child she saved, which might mean she gets next to absolute power beside the future King.
Not much different from the 18th, even 19th century Europe and America where women scientists, poets and writers either hid behind men's names or gave away rights to their work to a male (case in point - Wuthering Heights).

well! It took only 16 episodes for them to figure out who is who!
Though illogical, I find it amusing that Hwan is such a dimwit when it comes to matters of heart. I totally feel Jae-Yi's exasperation. That girl cannot be more vocal. Even Tae-Gang implied that she spends ALL his time alone with the Crown Prince.. Pffftt..
The Queen is turning out to be such an interesting character. I hope the princess survives this.
Not a big fan of the occult part of the show. Like the magical 1000 year old fish, or hair turning hair. I am hoping they have a good explanation for all the events.

I do wonder how the bracelet cap got screwed again and contains poison again. Didn't the guy open the cap so the poison drops into the cauldron?
🤔🤔The wondering is mutual. But I just had to employ a suspension of belief and wait for OBY to give an answer to that next week.
But my weak logical guess is that the heat from the cauldron prevented all the poison from pouring out being that it's a powdery substance. After the steam cooled off, the particles on the sides collected to the base of the bracelet. And when she(the now deceased noble daughter) touched the cap again and it opened, those remaining collected poison particles landed on her snacks, hence her death.

There could be a scientific explanation for poisonous fish eggs that turn people mad and their hair white when ingested… the fish being 1000 years old is probably a local legend, who’s been around 1000 years to confirm it? Maybe it’s got sea turtle longevity and is a couple hundred years old or something?

We made so much mystery progress this week! Jae-i knows how her family was killed (and that she was also targeted), our investigators know the basics of what happened in Byeokcheon, Seong-on knows that his relative is mourning her mother, Hwan and Myung-jin both know the identity of both of our leading ladies (and Myung-jin figured out who Hwan is), princess and queen found out who gave Elder Hyungnim a peach (and queen found out the murder can be attributed to, surprise suprise, her uncle), AND we got confirmation that Tae-gang has a twin. Points all around!
Now, if only Hwan could figure out who Jae-i is in love with. I can’t decide if I’m excited to watch his face change from frustration/disgust to shock/understanding or if I’m just ready for this part of their relationship to be done. I don’t hate it, but I wasn’t expecting it to go on for this long. Does she know that he’s madly in love with her? I hope so. Otherwise, nothing says, “I’ll secretly pine for you forever” quite like a house designed to the exact specifications you said on a whim that one time, so hopefully she’ll figure it out pretty quickly. And then there’s the angst of the royal wedding to contend with. Hwan throwing away the bracelet and telling Head Eunuch that it was his heart sent a pang through mine for sure.
I think it would have been too coincidental for the orphan kiddos to be the actual long-lost kids of our tavern couple, so I’m glad for the reveal that they are from an adjacent family. That scene when they were fleeing the army and their little girl was killed was just awful. I’d be harboring strong resentment too. I’m glad they’ve had a chance to interact with Hwan, even if they don’t know it yet, so they can see what kind of person he is and that he’s not going to stand for the same mistakes as his father.

I do think it's not yet the right moment for them to start on their much awaited PDA. They are not the touchy feely couple but are rock solid in their compatibility and so very comfortable in each other's company, almost like an old married couple ( they sure argue as one, the way Jay-yi folded her sleeves to counter him was priceless lol!).
And him being so super mean becuase of jealousy, worry and his helpnessness (and heartbroken at the same time) was so lame that even she saw right through it - "I see you want to hurt me today"...
And his - "You are not beautiful" - come again? and he goes on to envision this ethereal vision of beauty on a porch ( So-nee is absolutely gorgeous, it's hard to match PHS's beauty but she was right up there in that scene). I loved how he can actually see the real her through all the drab clothes she wears all the time. A man as beautiful as he actually sees the woman he loves for who she is, drop dead beautiful, sassy, unconventional to a fault, brilliant and supremely kind. The relationship graph of this series has been off the charts.
I think she does not want to tell him becasue she wants him to realize it himself. The day he finally realizes, it will be beautiful.

Ended up that the list of things he’s supposed to not like about her are the exact reasons why he does. Well, except for the ugly part (lie) and him being mad about her loving someone else (this he hates).
Agree on their old-married-couple-ish type of arguing. Maybe that’s why I enjoy it so much. They’re bickering but it also shows how close and comfortable they already are. And they can be petty but don’t hold grudges.

Agree, the childish tantrum was tiresome as well as hurtful and if I were Jae-yi, I'd want something to take the bad taste out of my mouth after that. The benefit of leaving the cakes behind, though, is that they will be a continuing silent reproach to him even after she's out of the room (even if it's a little juvenile of her, too). That kind of payback might be sweeter than the momentary pleasure of eating them.

It was very jerk-ish of him, BUT in the long run, I think, for the better - his self-control is pretty much free-falling now when it comes to her. I just hope Jo won't be involved in any dramatic reveals - other than breaking the "fake eunuch" news to King/court which is inevitable - because I'm getting creeps and nausea even thinking about it. Sung On is likely to figure it out himself imo - either everything at once or at least OTP's mutual feelings. He's been picking up clues for a while now - and kind of already mentally preparing himself to be officially dumped based on that talk with his cousin.

April 1, 2023 at 1:08 PM
I seriously hope there won't be MUCH drama between Sung On and Hwan. What was the point of her helping to restore their friendship if she's gonna end it for good? Hwan has been suffering for ages now in the name of that friendship, among other things, so Sung On better to consider his noble efforts. If he really needs to have a heated talk with someone over the situation, that's Jaeyi herself. Typical macho showdown over FL won't fit this story at this point - we already had one in form of a polo match, but that was then, when end result wasn't as clear yet. Sung On as he is nowadays is better than that - or I want to believe he is... I don't want Hwan to lose any of them permanently, it's too unfair.
Jo will definitely do something nasty with his "ace card", I'm just not sure what he's waiting for - for Crown Princess to be selected so families of all the rejected girls will be in no mood to forgive Hwan's misconduct? He also totally will present the issue in the most sordid way possible. That's where real nausea comes from...
Minnie_thelady8home
April 1, 2023 at 2:21 PM
I think Sung On pretty quickly will catch on where the actual resistance is coming from if it at all goes to that.
There will be some resistance to Hwan for sure, because it will be hard for Hwan to explain why she was not sent packing to Sung On right from the beginning - a subject can't really tell your majesty what they want - even to his own ears that would be unconvincing. Truth is, he could have sent her to Seargent right off the bat, and continued to investigate everything after that (even if Seargent wasn't his most trusted guy at that time, he would not have harmed Jay Yi, that Hwan knows).
But one volley of "You bastard" and my guess is our Crown Prince was lost. Forever. So he conveniently kept pushing the onus onto her, hoping she would never take it. She didn't. Now with this 'third' secret love over his martyred ass' as you so aply put @gikata, he is not even sure he wants to send her anywhere at all! So Sung On will resent Hwan to some degree, until he realizes where the actual resistance is coming from. He has not been at the end of Jay-Yi's famous temper up until now. His 'maiden' is no ordinary maiden, and to hot for anyone but Hwan to handle. He will be pretty quick to step out of the scorching heat the path will blaze if our dorky CP even tries "Go to Seargent' line one more time to Jay Yi.
Sigh! It will be fun watch. I hope the writers are planning some of these things.

I still don't like the idea of any serious confrontation between guys. Hwan has been steeling himself into letting Jaeyi go when time comes since day 1 which already took a great toll on him. Adding to that fear of loosing his just re-found friend - all while any hopes of future with Jaeyi are non-existent - sounds like too much pain at once for me. If show really needs to stab our hearts with that, make it quick and call anesthesiologist beforehand!
Btw Hwan already sort of explained his actions - by telling Sung On he investigates the case out of respect/duty for his late teacher. That's a valid excuse - and Sung On will have to swallow it, unless Hwan in his usual fashion tries to put all the blame on himself, insisting it was him who indecently and selfishly held onto Jaeyi because... long panicked pause... cue the woman in question, thoroughly shocked by what she just heard and very interested in hearing the rest)))

I think showing this early basically is this shows way of showing their separation even before they get together. This would make sense if - the CP dutifully marries the chosen Crown Princess and settles down into a peaceful Crown Prince life.
We all know that's not going to happen. Things will now blow up huge.
The wistful way Jay-Yi is mopping around at the annoucement of Hwan's marriage breaks my heart. The telling glance she gave to the broom and the bucket she was holding when the Crown Princess procession passed her by is ample indication of where her heart truly lies - she is happy to be anything - head Eunuch to Queen, as long as she gets to be by Hwan's side.
Her reasons for falling in love with him are so pure and uplifting, and the reasons he loves are equally adorable (she drinks, hahaha!). They make such a good match.

If you bypass everything and just watch their moments together, their relationship progress is slow but very steady. She literally told him she loved him, and all he could do was throw a tantrum because he is so jealous of himself. Poor guy is still very low on self esteem when it comes to relationships. He now trusts other people but can't see the goodness he himself possesses.

His marriage? Wasn't a pressing matter 2 episodes ago. His insistence of her returning to Sung On? He's given up on that after her first "I love another" claim. His petty jealousy? Well, most of that she caused herself with non-confession confession, and only keeps adding more fuel. Her feminine shyness and desire to leave the biggest step to a man to make? After everything she's said and done up until this point? Girl's all talk and no action then!

@Gikata I think for JaeYi she isn’t sure he likes her any more than as a loyal subject and friend. He has always been very careful/guarded around her even when she asked him if he would think about her after they separate. He said maybe occasionally he’ll be reminded of her. Sure doesn’t sound like much pining from her perspective unlike her daily thinking of him when the sun rises.
He seems to have accepted the upcoming marriage and it’s really starting with the candidates arrival and all… so I think she doesn’t want to cause him more suffering by confessing now when it is pretty hopeless anyway. If we can’t see the path forward even when we know how crazy he is about her, how could she without much of an inkling of his feelings. At least not with the current court trying to find any excuse to dethrone him and the strict requirements for the crown princess.

I don't mind a little angst, but I tend to be (perhaps too) harsh when there some combination of noble idiocy and overly-chaste stupidity, which I see in the Prince's willful failure to read the signals that Jaeyi is giving him. And @gikata I'm with you, up to a point. But in defense of the writing of Jae-yi's character, the stubbornness, already revealed to be part of Jaeyi's character must come into play here--a feeling that if he doesn't get it, then he really isn't committed enough himself.

@gikata: I think at this point it's more self preservation. She knows his hands are tied, assuming she thought they would have a bit more time to develop if his marriage had not been announced right away.
As I have mentioned before, a lot of her behavior can be contradictory because of her conservative upbringing. It's easy for her to say generic shocking things, but difficult to voice anything that is personal.
She is independent in spirit, but she never truly sought an independent life for herself. She is the kind of girl who always knew where she had to be when the drinking was over. She ran around catching theives and murderers, and yet was perfectly chill marrying an unknown guy and then assigning herself to 'darning socks' in her own language. She is still a virgin, so elemental shyness given the society she has been raised in is a more natural than we can think in our modern times. Proposing a Crown Prince is not easy, and she also might have these tiny tiny doubts in her mind - what if he does not appreciate? After all he kept sending her off to the Seargent everytime they got some alone time.
She also has quite a bit of self respect. I don't blame her. The bloke needs to walk at least quater way to meet her. All he does is talk in his head, send her to seargent, and throws jealous fits.

I have admired the drama version of Koreans for baldly stating, "I can't help how I feel" before/after unsuccessfully confessing their feelings, even when they suspect it might not go well for them. It's really not something the drama version of westerners would do, as we are busy weaving our emotional and egotistical armour and pretending we're not interested or don't care. (Confess? Moi? Bwhahaha!!).
So even though there may be huge blocks to these two marrying, surely one of them at least should make the shocking "saranghae" announcement because they "can't help how they feel" - unless that brave justification wasn't in common drama use until more recent times.

@gikata: I think yes. Her being fiesty and yet being shy can go hand in hand if we keep in mind the times. Women throwing themselves at men can be deemed loose in many societies even today, and lose respect very fast, even from men who love them. It's complicated. The fact that she can speak so freely to men, meet them in the eye while speaking and not be afraid of body contact could have rendered her 'of loose morals' had her gender been known. It makes her prudent subconciously. She is brave, but not unwise.
She just told him once, and she might have come clean had he not been so adament about sending her to seargent (in fact it was almost a last resort she blurted it out and had she named him, he might have resisted her even harder, considering that was why he was in that painful pushing away mode in the first place) and instead of dropping it (or respecting her choice - what if she truly loved someone else) he is the one who keeps flogging it. At this point she has no intention of taking it anywhere, and she has clearly outlined how she wants to live after she leaves. Not once did she say she would go to a man.
Our green horned guy just cannot get past it. She is resigned to his marriage and he wants her all to himself, his marriage be damned.

@gikata, true. Yes, Hwan may be a dimwit for not realizing or even noticing her almost-confessions.
But Hwan is also being very obvious with his bouts of jealousy. Does Jaeyi not wonder why he keeps bringing it up and gets mad about it? There were times where it even felt like she enjoyed watching him react that way.
Although, she did mention (in her head) that the thing she wanted to say back in Paju (confession?) wasn’t something she wanted to say now when he’s about to get married.

Nailed it. She suspects, but she knows even with her 100% in there it won't go anywhere. When he was dying in her arms, it was easy for her to bleed her heart onto him.
Things have changed since. Right now she is watching a parade of beautiful ladies beelining to become the Crown Princess while she sweeps their path - the irony could not have been more painful. The CP is committed to the marriage, do his duty.
" summons the fortitude of years of fierce repression, and prepares to forget he ever heard the word “feelings.” - pretty much sums up our prince charming's current state. Coupled with the fact he never opens up about his feelings to Jay yi (unlike the audience who is practically sitting inside CP's head), she can't but help deflect the volleys he throws. Just one answer on that infamous day - "Would you really be OK is I married Seargent" would have given her the opening. Instead he tells her he saying all of it for her own good.....ugh! @kaddicted, Hwan himself literally said once "you can't decide who to love" line so maybe drama has the shock of century prepared for us in form of him blurting it out first. It's gonna be HARD to rile him up to that level, but not entirely impossible. His legendary self-control is already in shambles and damage seems to be piling up.

Just what are we supposed to do with TWO prude clammed up idiots? Push them to each other forcefully?
@mmsik16, if she thinks his FUTURE marriage is a reason to retract her confession, then someone has to friendly point out to her that future part. Hwan's not married YET. He may very well end up there unless something - or someone - stops him before it's too late. She's actually in a better position than him rn - no pesky relatives or duties nudging her into it anymore. Perfectly comfortable position to be jealous of a bride he never claimed to want, unlike with her and Sung On.

@everyone in this thread (too many of you to type out!) I agree with the defenses of Jaeyi. She was willing to confess in life or death, but after she tried a couple times only to be met with minimal if any verbal support from Hwan of his returned feelings, she chickened out. I agree with whoever said that even modern humans have difficulty confessing when not met with close to 100% certainty of success.
Besides which, Jaeyi has always been practical. Even if she’s 80% sure of Hwan’s feelings and brave, she can’t see a future for them so why confess and potentially cause him more pain when he has to let him go? Because she can’t see a way where she can marry him, and she’s still traditional enough that to her, “being together” means through marriage. There’s no, let’s confess and have an illicit affair in the here and now. To her, she’s living for the now by just enjoying her time left with him as much as possible, snatching moments of happiness and memories to hold onto for when she has to leave him and basically pine for the rest of her life. That’s her expectation, anyway. Because ultimately Jaeyi knows dutiful, honorable Hwan who kept trying to send her back to Sung On will never abandon Joseon to choose her. He will throw away his heart for his people. That beautiful confession he made to her at his dead brother’s fave overlook? It was 50% about her and what she means to him, has done for him, and wanting to protect her, and 50% about Joseon, how she’s made him into a better man and future king, *for Joseson*. She can’t see this man not do his duty and she loves him for it, so she’ll never expect him to not. Anyway, this is how I expect she sees things. The optimistic viewer in me is still hoping for an anticipating a happy ending somehow!

There's that one scene from highlight video that's yet to happen, hinting that we may be giving Hwan too little (or too much? depends on what you consider the "right" thing to do) credit for his duty vs love dilemma. Yes, he's been choosing the former all his life - but he's also terribly exhausted from trying to fill his hyung's big shoes, not understanding that ultimately this is never gonna work, no matter how much efforts and sacrifices he makes. He's bound to have an eureka moment of realizing that his long quest of becoming someone else's stand in leads only to him losing what's personally his. And it'll happen soon because we've got only 2 weeks left)))
Jaeyi relaxed too early too fast. As far as I'm concerned constant danger to Hwan's life never got away, it's just looming somewhere nearby instead of punching him - and her - in the face directly. For now. This calm before the storm won't last long. I'd rather do without another arrow to his guts to stimulate her! Even irl today one can never be 100% sure they'll get another day and another chance to say what's really important... Stop being silly, you two! You DO NOT wanna learn this lesson the hard way.

@minnie. There is a scene from the highlight where the CP is wearing what looks like sleep clothes (white only) and claiming he has sinned and begging to be dethroned. Totally looking forward to this and the possibility that it will be this repressed prince who breaks down first and publicly declare his love for JaeYi if hiding a murderess whom he loves is his major sin.
Gikata
March 31, 2023 at 3:56 AM
@minniegupta1, basically what @koalatown said - Hwan is doing classical Joseon thingy by publicly pleading to King, complete with undergarments look, self-humiliation and request to be punished - by being deposed in his case. I assume Jo will rat on CP and his fake eunuch... Btw I doubt this particular idea of Hwan is going to end well, unless there's more to it.
Minnie_thelady8home
March 31, 2023 at 8:05 AM
@gikatata and @koalatown: OK I just now saw it (it does not have subtitles so I wasn't sure).
To me that looks too simplistic - him asking to be deposed for Jay Yi. Me thinks it might be something to do with the Queen instead. The Jo jerk will probably end up blackmailing CP with the info that he has on Jay Yi so CP stops persuing the whole rebellion affair. Just ratting on Jay Yi won't do much, because Jay Yi will take it all on herself and save the CP, and Jo knows that will defeat the purpose. Plus the king will gleefully have Jay Yi killed right in front of his precious son (what rotten luck this poor guy has).
It could be that the our smart CP finally figures out about the Queen and makes a plea to his father to depose him if he thinks he has sinned or believe what he is saying. I can see the King dying for not beliving his son.
But yes, I don't put past Hwan to publicly declare his love if he so much as inhales danger for her.
In Portugal, there is this church in Alcobaca where a King (Pedro I) and his lover (Innes) are buried side by side. Pedro would not leave her and was ready to give up the throne becasue the King refused to accept Innes as his DIL, so the King had her murdered, which enraged Pedro so much that he killed his father, took the throne, exumed her body, had the whole court kneel to her and declare her their queen, and made the biggest memorial possible for his beloved and eventually got hilself buried beside her.
These love stories were more common than we think.

@minniegupta1, no way Hwan would let Jaeyi take the fall alone if she's busted, tho I agree that she'll totally try to do exactly that. Hey, what if the whole thing is actually about Hwan blackmailing his dad this way? Along the "leave my woman alone or find yourself another heir to order around" lines. Probably not, but if only... Anyway finale is near - expect logic thrown out of the window while pathos and angst levels go UP. Something grandly heroic and romantic (and likely also dumb at the same time) will be done by our smart CP for sure to prove his "perfect ML only found in trashy fantasy novels" status lol

I am dead sure it won't be cut. It sure is heading that way. This is the best build up of all the dramas I have seen so far, and most tastefullydone. They are keeping so much in character (none of those 'accidental' lip locking nonsense that makes me roll my eyes). The collective anguish at the absence of PDA during their month together now makes so much sense. The writing is brilliant. The tone of the crime at the background is too dark for their PDA to take off right at this moment, especially if we are gearing up for several deaths, especially the Queen's and possibly the King's. My guess it will be around the 19th episode at a very high emotinal octave.

I also don't think it will be cut - and I didn't mind that nothing happened during lockdown month - but cannot 100% agree about tastefully done label. Show jumped the shark with that hug 3 episodes ago and since then has been ANYTHING but tasteful and tactful about lead's troubled path to mutual love epiphany. Hwan refused to even THINK about that hug? Ok, regrettable - and how! - but still in character. Jaeyi chickening out in the middle of confession? Hmm, but also acceptable. Her doing the same again and again on a daily basis just to ruffle Hwan's feathers? Eh... All the above combined? Starts to smell like an overcooked dish now. What for, other than stalling time for few more hours? I'm really worried that when Big Damn Kiss finally happens, high emotional octave won't be as high as we hoped all along. Timing of events is arguably - not really, I'm just trying to be nice - show's biggest weakness so far. Actors I do trust in delivering all they could - can't say the same about writer. Or PD, for that matter.

@dncingemma: Hwan has gone from 'go to seargent' to absolutely crazy thinking of her in someone else's arms. At this point, if he knows it's him, especially at a point when he is supremely vulnerable, he will reach out to her unconciously. He has done in unthinkingly a couple of times (the wrist grab while buying that knife) or reaching out to caress her when she was sleeping....He is ready to claim her as his own. I do think at the back of his mind he knows he can still have her by his side - he is the crown prince who is allowed to have as many women by his side as he pleases if he so desires, but not if she loves someone else. So the knowledge that it's him she loves, it opens the flood gates for him. That's what this trajectory has done for this couple.

When he does figure out she means him, though, I expect him to fall into a self-sacrificing snit and push her away (or run away) even harder, in the short term. He doesn’t yet believe he deserves happiness or love and he’s still trying to put everything back the way it was between Jae-yi and Seung-on, like a kid trying to glue together a broken toy, as a substitute for fixing his own broken heart.

Personally, as a committed rulebreaker myself, I think when he does realise, he should go on a rampage, dethrone the King and Queen, take over, get rid of every cackling minister and appoint honest ones, exonerate Jae-yi, exonerate Ga-ram, change the rules, proclaim himself King, marry Jae-yi, marry his sister to Sung-on, marry Ga-ram to Myung-jin, buy his brother a better wig, rehabilitate the Tae-gangs, bring Beokchyong back into the fold, kill the bloodthirsty fish, banish the guy who ferries it around and have a big party at the Tavern.
Minnie_thelady8home
March 31, 2023 at 5:28 AM
The secret room definitely should come to play.
There are two forces at play in the palace, both out to kill the Crown Prince. My guess is a huge movement is coming where the king will be killed and the CP will have to hide until the forces arrive to secure his position (through the ministers).
And our ever dependable Jay yi is not going to leave her CP's side. And by this time, with King out of the way, all bets will be off.
Eventully a change of rules and Jay Yi joining the bride selection - it will be sweet.
I am hoping it will go that way. 100 days my Prince had shown quite a few twists towards the end of the show (director), while I wasn't too impressed with the screenplay for Romance is a bonus book (writer). So far they have done a better job at OBY (barring episode 16 which all of us feel dragged a bit for stating the obvious). But four episodes can pack a punch. Hopefully they can unpack everything and still give us some sweet PDA scenes all of us have been starving for lol!

@minniegupta1, but Crown Princess selection is usually supervised by Queen - who is in villain team. Even when we're done with her, who could replace her in the matter? Sweet little Princess who's still single herself? Unconvincing. Plus we don't know how she'll react to reveal of eunuch Go's real identity - or that Jaeyi and her oraboni are an item. All Hyungsik's previous romantic drama roles (total number of 7, and 5 among 20s age range - I assume he was playing 30+ in Soundtrack) did. @gikata I believe in Soundtrack, his and Han So Hee’s characters were supposed to be 28 because they met as kids at 9 and they’d been friends 19 years (don’t judge, it’s a short watch, and I enjoyed it more than most!)
In Happiness, he’s around 32 in Korean age as they graduate at 19/20 and they flash forwarded 12 years.
I’m trying to stack my brain for the horny fantasies in What Happens to My Family, Hwarang, and Suits… plenty of cute kisses and hugs in WHTMF but not horny iirc, and Hwarang he didn’t even get the girl, even though there was an icky kiss. In Suits, I just remembered the romance was meh but they had a couple of decent kiss scenes.

March 30, 2023 at 6:57 AM
@happyokaytales, 28?! Well, that explains a thing or two... actually not, I just never can pass an opportunity to roast that drama lol)))
WHTMF is an interesting case actually - seemingly the most innocent one due to actors age, but not only it covers a long period of nearly 1,5 years, there's also A LOT things happening during the time. OTP lives in the same house, date very seriously since almost the start, he (after some initial tomato blushing jumpiness over the smallest things, not unlike his current counterpart) is awfully clingy with her, always stealing kisses/hugs and such... Basically they're de facto married way before officially getting married, complete with his imagination doodles of how this whole cohabitation+dating thing is supposed to work. No amount of pink colored brush can convince me he was blushing THAT hard for nothing)))
In Hwarang there was no dating, but he was a regular listener of her R-rated stories. Even tho dude slept through most of it, some likely stuck. Suggestive behavior and few attempts to move relationship forward with bold skinship leave very little room to doubt.
Suits simply went for a classical ramyun double entendre and looong beat with zoom on ML's omg face after his lady suggested that post-kiss)))

@gikata fair enough with your Hwarang and WHTMF explanations (man, you also reminded me that PHS's first drama pairing is to this day among my top faves. He had the easiest chemistry with Nam Ji Hyun.)

Maybe her turn will come pretty soon too, who knows))) I probably should just rewatch their cut in that drama - it's been a while and I need some additional sugar to prepare myself for OBY's final stretch angst.
It's easy to recall everything about love line in Suits - wasn't that much of it in the first place lol. I could never understand that story arc, honestly. Did they even like each other for real? He mostly seemed flattered by attention of a woman way above his usual class and she was just... weak for the cutie, I guess. Relatable, but boring.

Those even made it to news sites and production company was FUMING. Then we had no official news whatsoever for 2+ months)))

The lack of their physical intimacy despite their such intimate setting is mind boggling - they sit in each other's bedroom, she sleeps in his bed, she dresses him, she hovers over him with her entire body hanging over him - Good God, it's unbelievable how believable they have made their no-touchy feely relationship just by developing Hwan's character into who he is. MVP for me this week was Myungjin. I cheered for my man, he was sharp throughout, from the very first moment he spotted Jaeyi, Hwan, and Garam all in on something about the bracelet, through all the identity reveals and his investigation board— like a Joseon police detective board.
Even the moments when it seemed like he was being a momentary idiot, I don’t think he was. When he stared at Scholar Park first, then immediately turned over to Jaeyi to claim she was the CP, I also facepalmed for a moment, but in hindsight, I think he already knew Hwan was the CP at that moment, but immediately realized nothing good would come of making the CP realize his identity was busted. So he shrewdly made a big show of bowing to Jaeyi to deflect and put them back at ease. When he shared with Garam that Jaeyi was a girl because of her hand bones, and then seemingly agreed with Garam that he was wrong because Garam has similar hands as a man, I think he was doing the same thing again. He pretended to be appeased by Garam when in fact he was not only not convinced by her that Jaeyi wasn’t a women, he had just pretty much confirmed his suspicions on Garam’s gender and identity. He just kept it to himself bc again, to put her at ease and he didn’t want to stir up too much trouble while they still had to work together to finish solving the case.
And he figured out the Taegang twin thing! Sure, the audience knew a while ago, but Hwan and Jaeyi had only recently realized he was showing up in two places at once, and Hwan was initially convinced Jaeyi had muddled her memory. So this was brand new info to our Scooby Gang, and it took Myungjin pondering his investigation board a while, and he came to quite a few conclusions. Bravo Myungjin. I knew you had it in you.

I felt like this week was slow. I was impatient for more action and developments. Most of us already guessed that Tae Gang was a twin. Hwan being stumped by the 'mystery man' was/is draggy.
The poignant scene of Dal Rae & Meo Ru and the tavern couple was a good bonding moment. It was good to know more about Bok Soon and Man Deok too. I'm glad the kids know the truth.
The queen's swift order to assassinate the princess was the only shocker.

I do appreciate the fact that the villains here are an oppressed group of people who had cried out for help and instead got slaughtered and now seek revenge for all the prejudice and mistreatment they have sustained since then as well. So you still want to root for them especially when they’re after the cackling evil right minister who used an innocent child to remove an obstacle to the throne.
I am super interested in whether the queen really is a Jo or perhaps was a distant relative they never met so is actually not even a Jo but the wife of Song who stole the real Jo niece’s identify and probably life to save herself and her unborn child during the massacre. How did she get the uncle to quickly get her married off to the king before her pregnancy is known? Perhaps something hypnotic about those petals during the wedding night?
While the fact that the CP is so jealous of himself seems odd for someone so smart, I find those scenes so funny that I don’t mind that they drag it on. I want MJ to be the one to reveal it to him and tease him relentlessly for his ignorance.

That was a very satisfying recap! It turned out that the weird thing where the prince doesn't realize that Jae-yi is in love with him is actually kind of fun. I also feel validated in my suspicion that Tae-gang was two people. I thought my heart was going to break when the queen, having ordered her step-daughter's assassination, bursts into tears wondering whether the princess is dressed warmly enough. (And this is why we do not want to be a Joseon queen! ) If I'd had to guess whether she would kill, I would have said exactly this, "she'll do it, but she won't like it!" There are still a lot of mysteries to unpack, and I can't figure out how the prince can have a happy ending. Maybe his brother just--hid in exile? That would be cool!

Dear DB, I watched this week's episodes and now EVERYTHING hurts... Essay warning.
I thought I couldn't be MORE unhappy with the show than during Ep14, but here we are – Ep15 specifically was a pure concentrated depression. I know, every drama has this angsty phase where leads do nothing but suffer cinematographically, but here it was even worse than usual for some reason. Said reason's likely wtf pace of the romance – not just the fact that we're still denied of any significant progress 80% of drama in, but also dumb “who is it?” comedy writer apparently thinks makes the struggle more exciting. Short answer to that is no, hell, let it go already! I can live with Hwan being a total clinical idiot when it comes to his love life (the wisest of us has been there!), but I cannot forgive turning his misery and heartbreak into non-stop running gag. Not to mention it also ruins the significance of his painful decision to leave his feelings forever unspoken. That scene about throwing away his heart, for all its cliché nature, was gut wrenchingly beautiful, so was his farewell gift to Jaeyi (what did I told ya last week about this boy and his grand presents?). But do we really need to see him go full deaf monkey on EVERYONE'S hints so often? Once was enough methinks. And it's not just me nitpicking – when the most viral thing about your show's latest episodes is meme clip of lead actor's silly dancing behind the scene, you know something is NOT right here.
Most reveals sucked. We've guessed long before about twins, fake rebellion, poison in bracelet, Queen being the main baddie etc. Truth behind peach poisoning did make me gasp. That's... not really smart of Jo, honestly – too much risk for his human ticket to power. He doesn't seem all that concerned about boy lately – extra busy with evil cackling? Come on, dude, it's been months, you'll soon have no puppet king material at your disposal! I feel bad for the kid, but ugh, he'd better to never get anywhere near throne even if he miraculously grows up to be 180 degrees from his current self. The fact that he seemingly lived just fine for 3 years despite knowing what happened, despite rumors about Hwan being the killer all around the palace yet only started to show some panicked guilt NOW gives me nausea. I'm so sorry, Hwan, I wished hard for you to get away from all this and be free, but fate clearly has other plans. Just don't let it take away any other choice from you, ok?
Myungjin is love. He even held small mourning ceremony for that undeserving of such kindness from him lady! And he's not angry over his other guesses, just a bit disappointed he didn't get all the info earlier. That was pretty dumb of them, actually. Dude surely can connect the dots. Him guessing female hands by holding them was pretty funny. Toilet invention and water bills joke tho... Exactly what show lacked all his time! *sarcasm*
