Childhood friends meet reality dating TV in Oh! Young-shim

Script reading stills for the new ENA rom-com Oh! Young-shim have arrived with our two leads Song Ha-yoon (Please Don’t Date Him) and Super Junior’s Lee Dong-hae (a.k.a. Donghae) (God’s Quiz 4).

The story follows Song Ha-yoon’s character — the titular Oh Young-shim. She’s a single, thirty-something variety show PD who’s been working for eight years, but lacks a hit program to show for it. While she’s always leaned toward comedic TV, she one day gets the opportunity to produce a reality dating show. Considering this her last chance, she pulls out all the stops, including casting the oh-so-famous unicorn start-up founder Mark Wang (Donghae) as one of the contestants.

However, things get messy when she finds out that not only does she know Mark Wang, he’s actually Wang Kyung-tae, a childhood friend that had a raging crush on her when they were kids. They had lost contact after his family moved to the States, but he’s now back in Korea, ready to win some lucky lady’s heart.

In the supporting cast, we have Lee Min-jae (Taxi Driver 2), playing Young-shim’s PD hoobae who’s also nursing a crush (cue: love triangle), and Jung Woo-yeon (Meant to Be), playing a YouTuber and Young-shim’s friend Goo Wol-sook.

This plot sounds similar to Love is for Suckers, and considering how in that drama fellow Super Junior member Siwon also played a well-to-do bachelor roped into a dating show while secretly in love with the PD, I’m excited to watch this show and compare how the two play out. Better yet, if we could make playing this type of character a Super Junior tradition, I think that would be endlessly entertaining. Someone please make it happen.

Written by Jeon Seon-young (A DeadbEAT’s Meal) and directed by Oh Hwan-min (Boss-dol Mart) and Kim Eun-kyung (Show Me the Ghost), Oh! Young-shim will premiere on May 15th on ENA and Genie streaming platforms.

So what we have here is A Reality Dating show PD + another Super Junior member and the same plot premise, including an ML with a long-standing crush on the FL, as a supposed romcom which completely crashed and burned- despite the fact that it had Siwon who is something of a comedic genius.

I seem to remember that Einstein had a definition for insanity that seems to mirror this situation.

That being said I thought that in fact LOVE IS FO9R SUCKERS could have been a good comedy if only the writer had remembered that comedies are supposed to be funny. I realize that this is a quaint, unsophisticated and possibly quite archaic idea but it does seem to have a certain logic to it and being the simple man that I am I am loathe to give it up.

Therefore, I will hope that this time it will work, even if Einstein suggests that it will not.

My only hope is that this doesn't derail Lee Min Jae's momentum from Crash Course in Romance ... he's pretty much the only one out of the 4 leads to have actually acted in the past 2 years (and it's not like anyone here was taking some sort of acting sabbatical).

The best thing to have come out of Love is for Suckers is John/Ji Wan so assuming that Oh! Young-shim is similar, Lee Min Jae will hopefully get the same arc as the chef who went on to overshadow the main leads. But I do sense a more traditional love triangle here where he'll be pining for the female lead for a good 1/2 of the show's length instead of moving on quickly and falling for someone else.

All in all, this looks so not promising. I don't think I would've bothered much if this wasn't Lee Min Jae's follow-up to his breakout role in Crash Course in Romance ... and one has to wonder if his agents intended for that to be because the next drama he's doing alongside Lee Bo Young and Lee Moo Saeng seems to suggest he's starting to get bigger and better roles, with this possibly being the last project where he's just slaving away in minor roles and garnering experience.

P.S. I don't remember him being in Taxi Driver 2 at all (I do recall he cameoed as part of a procedural in the 1st season) but somehow MDL has him as a supporting character. Is it just me or it that just erroneous?

Asianwiki doesn't mention Taxi Driver 2 on his dramas' list.

Right, the only good part of LifS was John/Ji-wan. All I want is a drama where the main leads are like them (or, better yet, just give them their own drama already)!

I don't need a synopsis or wtv, I would watch anything for Song Ha Yoon. I've missed her.

If people are comparing this with LifS maybe that's good. That show was so bad this one can't be worse, right?
At least I know I'll like the FL and main couple because SONG HA YOON! 😆

Aw I like her too. She brings out the vulnerability in her characters really well. Lifs started out great but went downhill from there. Still puzzled at how that could happen. This one can't possibly be worse. Righttttt

IKR? She's lovely.

I hope this show is as cute as her other dramas.

Hopefully this is better than the hot mess that was love is for suckers. I look forward to it.

This can only be better than Lifs. But I do want to waste my time again so I will wait for reviews and feedback before I decide IF I will watch this.

‘ This plot sounds similar to Love is for Suckers’👈🏾 I was thinking the same thing, if I was the writer of Love is for suckers I would be consulting my lawyer.

I am hopeful this will stay the course and be the drama that Love is for suckers started out as before someone over enthusiastically pitched their genius idea to make the show standout in the sea of rom coms ‘let’s make the trash reality tv show the main focus and then the leads will become extras in their own show’ and someone nursing a serious hangover said ‘ok ok! Anything to stop you talking’. The pitcher achieved their goal as Love is for suckers did stand out from the other rom coms, unfortunately for all the wrong reasons and the leads really did become extras in their own show.

It's interesting this drama is based on manhwa about a 14 years old girl but the drama is about the FL when she's an adult. So it's a new story. Lee Min-jae is playing a new character.

I am going to be watching this purely for the novelty value of Donghae in a drama again, and also because he is beautiful.

If it is entertaining that is a bonus 😅 I have my priorities 😅

Love is for Suckers was pretty disapointing. The story wasn't what I had understood from the synopsis. So I hope this time it will be the case!

I like more Donghae as an idol than an actor but he's cute. I din't really like Song Ha-Yoon's last dramas, I hope she got a better drama this time.

Uhh, this sounds almost identical to Love is for Suckers. But LifS the issue was the execution, not the premise. I want to give this a chance, but LifS REALLY scarred me (with the exception of John/Ji-wan, but I'm not expecting any other drama to pull off a coup like that again).
