News bites: April 15, 2023

Sohn Seok-gu

  • The Hong sisters (Alchemy of Souls) — Hong Jung-eun and Hong Mi-ran — are working on a new romance, and with Sohn Seok-gu (Big Bet) in talks for the lead role, it’s going to be mighty hard to keep my expectations in check. Please be good, please! Titled Can This Love Be Translated (roughly translated), the drama is still in the planning stages with PD Yoo Young-eun (Red Heart) attached to direct. [News1]

  • Another new romance in the works is Eun-joong and Sang-yeon (working title), which has Kim Go-eun (Little Women) considering the title role of drama writer Ryu Eun-joong. The story will explore the industry of TV and film production, with scripts by Song Hye-jin (Hundred Million Stars From the Sky) and PD Jo Young-min (The Interest of Love, Do You Like Brahms) at the helm. [News1]

Kim Go-eun

  • In a busy week of casting news, Lee Je-hoon (Taxi Driver 2) is in discussions with MBC to star in the period investigative drama Chief Inspector 1963 (working title). If Lee accepts, he’ll be taking on the iconic role played by veteran actor Choi Bool-am (Goodbye to Goodbye) in the long-running original series, which aired a whopping 880 episodes between 1971-1989. The remake is planning to broadcast towards the end of 2023. [Osen]
  • The also busy Woo Do-hwan (Joseon Attorney) is already reviewing offers for his next project and one contender has the fun title of Mr. Plankton. Should the stars align, the rom-com will have Woo playing the main character Hae-jo, who dreams of a brighter future when he can finally escape his empty and dreary life. Production is being led by writer Jo Yong (It’s Okay to Not Be Okay) and PD Hong Jong-chan (Link: Eat Love Kill). [Dispatch]

Woo Do-hwan

  • Over on tvN, Queen of Tears announced their plans to begin filming by June and is slated to premiere in the latter half of this year. Starring Kim Soo-hyun (One Ordinary Day) and Kim Ji-won (My Liberation Notes), the romance has also tapped Park Sung-hoon (The Glory) and Kwak Dong-yeon (Gaus Electronics), who are currently reviewing the roles. Scripts are being penned by Park Ji-eun (Crash Landing on You) with co-directing by PD Jang Young-woo (Bulgasal: Immortal Souls) and PD Kim Hee-won (Little Women). [Xports News]
  • tvN also announced that The Uncanny Counter 2 is coming this July, with Jo Byung-kyu (Stove League), Yoo Joon-sang (Alchemy of Souls), Kim Se-jung (Today’s Webtoon), and Yeom Hye-ran (The Glory) all reprising their roles. Newly joining the second season is Jin Seon-gyu (Behind Every Star), Kang Ki-young (Extraordinary Attorney Woo), Kim Hieora (The Glory), and Yoo In-soo (The Good Bad Mother). Written by Kim Sae-bom, PD Yoo Sun-dong remains at the helm. [Newsen]
  • In the meantime, the story continues for TVING’s Duty After School in the upcoming Part 2, which stars soldier Shin Hyun-soo (Critical X) and teacher Im Se-mi (The Empire) along with our student soldier troops. With the alien war resuming next week on April 21, the sci-fi released new promos, including a group poster and an action-packed video teaser. [MBC]

Hong Sisters' drama are a ten, but sometimes their male leads are complete asshats, and their male and female protagonists don't get equal development.

2. *writer on blacklist* *avoid*
3. -
4. premise sounds bland and vague af, but it could be ok considering the crew. And ofc, WDH.
5. at this point the PD/Writer match up is actually a draw; I want to see what madness Kim Hee Won will direct for a Park Ji Eun script and whether or not I will hate it lmfao. you know, and the cast I guess...
6. I still haven't watched the first one, pfft

1. WTF? No. This should exist only as a 15-second clip on YouTube of SSK saying NO in every language.

2, 4, and 5. These might be descriptions of the same drama for all the info provided. The casts are intriguing if they really happen; #4 sounds too good to be true and therefore I assume will not really happen.

1) At least, there is no fantasy and they only can do better than Warm and Cozy. For SSG in a romantic drama, I'm ready to watch the worst.

2) It looks good.

3) 880 episodes? How will they shorten the story?

4) I'm curious why they release information about casting so early.

5) I'm really excited to watch this one. I love the main actors and I'm really curious to watch them together.

I loved Hotel del Luna but hated Alchemy of Souls (especially season 2). Haven't seen their other works, might give it a try. This new series one seems doesn't have any fantasy elements though.

1. Hong Sisters, SSK, what could go wrong?😏🤔
2. I am always here for a Kim Go Eun drama.
3. Lee Je Hoon going back in time, I hope to try this because I quit Taxi driver for it's trauma porn, I hope this is better. Also 880 episodes is ALOT.
4. WDH is good in a romance, why not.
5. Queen of Tears🥰🥰
6. I'm excited to have our team back together.

I read on namuwiki that Can This Love Be Translated? was actually set for filming first, before Alchemy of Souls, back in 2019, but COVID-19 got in the way, and it seems obvious the latter project got greenlighted first because it would generate more buzz. Interpretation and translation is a field that hasn’t been given the center stage in K-dramas, so I hope we get to see it in action, and not as a filler premise. Not really a fun fact, but the title is actually the same as the Korean title for Sophia Coppola’s film Lost in Translation.
So when they mean by “romance thriller”, do they mean “melo with company politics and hitmen on the side” or “Female Gothic story with comedy” which is the case of the film Killing Romance starring Honey Lee and Lee Sun-kyun?

- I don't like Hong sisters' writing. At all. But I always end up checking out their shows.
- Can they get Wi Ha Joon for Kim Go Eun's drama?
- At this point, Dramaland is making sure that Lee Je Hoon would not be unemployed even for a day. With how fast Taxi Driver was confirmed for another season, I think the show would be on air for a loooong time.
- I know for a fact I would not check out the show named Queen of Tears. Life is difficult as it is. I don't need sixteen hours of impending sense of doom.

these all sound good to me and will make it on my coming this year lists. The only one I didn't watch is Duty After School so part 2 is up for the grabbing by those who did watch it.

1. I'm not ready for another Hong Sisters, but I'm ready for another Sohn Seok-ku and will put confidence in Red Hearts PD to tether to earth whatever the Hong Sisters have planned.

It's everything about good feelings with Queen of Tears' casting.

Now it's really impossible to turn away from The Uncanny Counter 2.
