News bites: April 19, 2023

Lee Jae-wook, Jo Boa

  • A new mystery-romance sageuk called Tangeum (Romanized title) is being planned with Lee Jae-wook (Alchemy of Souls) and Jo Boa (Tale of the Nine Tailed) in talks to headline the series as half-siblings. In childhood, the younger brother had mysteriously disappeared and now, ten years later, he has suddenly returned home. PD Kim Hong-sun (Bait) is attached to direct with writing by Kim Jin-ah (Dr. Brain). [Sports World, Xports News]

  • Hwang In-yub (Why Her) and Jung Chae-yeon (The Golden Spoon) have reportedly been cast in A Prefabricated Family (roughly translated, working title). Adapted from the hit Chinese drama Go Ahead, the coming-of-age story about finding family and love will have scripts by Kim Shi-young for the Korean remake. [MBC]

  • In another busy week for casting announcements, Oh Jung-se (Uncle) has been tapped for the rom-com Mr. Plankton, potentially joining Woo Do-hwan (Joseon Attorney) and Lee Yumi (Mental Coach Jegal). Production is still in the planning stages and, if Oh accepts, it’ll be his second time working with the rom-com’s writer Jo Yong, after It’s Okay to Not Be Okay. [JTBC]
  • Go Ah-sung (Tracer) has been cast in TVING’s new romance sageuk The Love Story of Choon-hwa (working title). In the lead role, Go will be playing a princess on two important missions. She needs to find the artist who dared to use her face in a racy drawing and to also find a husband of her own choosing, rather than marry a match her father has made. [Star News]

Go Ah-sung

  • Not that I’m complaining, but we are swimming in sageuks as of late and another one on the horizon is KBS’s The Battle of Marriage (roughly translated). The rom-com currently has offers out to Jo Yi-hyun (All of Us Are Dead) and Kim Ro-woon (Tomorrow). The rom-com will be penned by Ha Soo-jin (Sell Your Haunted House) with PD Hwang Seung-gi (Memorials) at the helm. [Star News]
  • Choo Young-woo (Oasis) is considering the medical drama Severe Trauma Center: Golden Hour for his next project, playing a student to the character currently offered to Joo Ji-hoon (Jirisan). The original webnovel is written by real-life doctor and YouTuber Lee Nak-joon, who modeled the story on the famed general surgeon Lee Guk-jong. [Star News]
  • Over on JTBC, The Good Bad Mother is gearing up for its premiere next week and the last round of promos include new stills and a new teaser. Starring Ra Mi-ran (Dr. Park’s Clinic), Lee Do-hyun (The Glory), Ahn Eun-jin (The One and Only), and Yoo In-soo (Alchemy of Souls), the series will be launching on April 26. [JTBC, News1]

1. Lee Jae Wook is always welcome.
2. Go Ahead: Not sure about Jung Chae Yeon. Also, hoping they remove the problematic elements that the original had: Villainized mothers, the incest(ish) angle in the leads relationship, the ML's weirdness.
4. A princess?
7. Good Bad Mother: Excited for this.

It’s raining sageuks, hallelujah it’s raining sageuks, Amen.
What is up with the sageuk gods?

@marcusnyc20, bong-soo, your list is already long and it’s not even halfway through the year yet.

You said it @kiara! On my list of upcoming possible sageuks and period dramas I already have Rowoon’s (No. 4) THE BATTLE OF MARRIAGE on my list as SENDING ME TO YOU.
So from above there are two additions:

18. TANGEUM (Lee Jae-wook, Jo Bo-ah).
19. TVING’s THE LOVE STORY OF CHOON-HWA (Go Ah-sung).

(TANGEUMlike a number of the upcoming dramas still don’t indicate a network.)

There are only 3 sageuks that I want to check out and only one writer who knows how to write a proper sageuk.
Sadly, we have quantity over quality.

I loved Rowoon in TKA and will be happy to see him in a good rom comey sageuk.

Yes, I know. I don’t normally disagree with you but you are far too harsh on him. He wasn’t sleazy (IIRC, that was the adjective you used to describe him once) in the least in TKA. He was really likeable. There. Them are my fighting words!

FYI Sic (and you probably are aware) I have Rowoon and now Jo Yi-hyun’s possible upcoming rom-com sageuk listed at No. 4 above as THE BATTLE OF MARRIAGE already on my list under the title SENDING ME TO YOU which if I recall you lined through. In other words I know of only one possible upcoming Rowoon sageuk not two if that helps.
(For the record I like the guy but I only have two dramas to go by: WHERE STARS LAND (2018) (Viki US) and TOMORROW (2022) (Netflix US). I guess there is no accounting for taste lol.)

“ I guess there is no accounting for taste lol”. 😂😂. A dig each way. Nicely done.

Oh! It is that one! Hahahaha.
You had it under a different name and I think I saw Rowoon and went, "nope, I can't commit to sitting through two of his shows in a year for reasons other than him" and striked it without looking at more 😂😂 so I didn't make the writer connection earlier. Oh well.
It has more strikes against it than not (Rowoon, and the story doesn't interest me), so the only plus is that I liked Sell Your Haunted House enough to keep tabs on the writer.
But I'd wish she'd write another horror fantasy...
I'll keep it where it is for now and maybe by some miracle he doesn't take the role AND it's a 2024 drama 😂😂😂

I would like to watch sageuks as little as possible because they do irritate the bejaysus out of me, but I can happily stare at Rowoon. Although I do admit I haven't plucked up the necessary attention span to watch TKA and gave up on Tomorrow not long after he got dressed at the hospital. Maybe I should just settle for a poster.

As a romance drama, Rowoon was very good in She Would Never Know.

I know that a lot of people stopped the drama after the 2 first episodes because of his character. But he evolved a lot and the romance was really good.

This review is very precise :

"we are swimming in sageuks as of late"

"Swimming" indeed, as Sageukland is notably ToD-deprived and doesn't even have many Rooftops, but is instead infested with Cliffs and the accompanying Rivers.

Not to mention the deeper-than-the-Mariana-Trench palace ponds and lakes where they fall only to be rescued by the ML/FL.

2. Despite the visuals I don’t think they will make a strong couple in k-drama. JCY’s acting is still bland based on her last project and I think HIY should outgrow high school student role.

Ooooh Hwang In Yub & Jung Chae Yeon. Can they be in a good drama this time? Won't be two duds in a row, right? XD

4. Go Ah Sung 🖤
5. Please don't accept please don't accept please. I would actually like to check out SYHH's writernim's next work, thanks very much; I would like to watch Rowoon as little as possible 😂😂😂

Do you think Go Ah Sung will accept a NC 19 sageuk? I’m 50/50 on this.

Lee Jae wook! I feel like I’ll almost always watch anything he’s in but jo boa, I don’t know. I have yet to see something she is on where she isn’t a doll and actually emoting something. I like her as a person, she is nice and fun in interviews but her acting is always always extremely flat.

Remake of go ahead, nice I really liked the c drama but it had a weird incesty relationship thingy going on that needs to go. Also the weird villain mom has to go in the remake please

Resident Jo Boa Apologist here:
Have you seen My Strange Hero? I think that was probably one of if not her best.

She also emotes in her bitchy second lead roles but I don't think I can safely recc any of the shows themselves 😂, and she was typecast for ages and got a bad rap.

I know she's not like, the best of the best actress haha so I won't try to claim so, and if you're not a fan, I understand; hey, she's been controversial her whole career 😂😂 but she's a personal fave despite everything; I just enjoy and like watching her.

Yeah, she isn't best, but I think she is passable in her roles or at least in the dramas I have wached, so why she has a bad rep and controversial career? What am I missing?

She played a lot of hateable bitchy characters (espcially SFLs) all in a row and I think that put people off her a lot and lots of people didn't like her so I think it was like a bit of a red flag when she got cast. That was my impression over previous years anyway.
Personally I think it was more casting and show misfortune than anything, cos I think she can really shine in a good role. I'd love to see her play a sexy villainess, for example (as she did great as imoogi possessed Ji A in 9T.)
I even liked her as the bitchy SFL in Man Living in Our House tbh, so she can be fun when she leans into it haha, but some of the roles I think she got more flak for I haven't actually seen.

I also don't mind her more simple roles. There's just something I like watching about her. I was so happy just to see her on my screen again in Military Prosecutor lol.

1) It's funny to see Jo-Bah to play with Lee Jae-Wook after acting with Rowoon, know LJW and Rowoon are best friend since Extraordinary You.

2) HIH had finally left hischool for college! Poor guy, they will send him back... After his performance in Why Her?, I'm kinda scared about him beaing a lead.

3) I like the casting. Lee Yu-Mi deserves a true romance and not the disaster of Mental Coach Jegal.

4) I love Go Ah-sung! She's really good with comedy.

5) I really don't like Jo Yi-hyun as an actress. Until now, she was pretty disapointing in main role in School 2021 (fortunaly there was the super cute second couple) and All of Us Are Dead, she wasn't better in HP 1 and HP2 (she gave the same crying scene in both season...). I really hope she will get better.

6) I like Choo Young-woo because he was the cute second male lead in School 2021 :p And he was good in Once Upon a Small Town.

1 - at first got me excited with sibling leads, but then I double-checked genres... It's actually fauxcest, isn't it? Then NOPE.
3 - Oh Jung Se and IOTNBO writer? Now that deserves a second glance at least.
4 - that's only one mission because no way in kdrama hell the guy who did her this dirty isn't ML and future disapproved-by-daddy-king husband)))
5 - no words on plot yet? Romcom sageuk alone isn't tempting enough.
6 - why my men are so obsessed with medical dramas this year? *head-desks*

Incest - or, rather, fauxcest - is a classical kdrama melo trope, it was VERY huge in '00s before slowly dying out due to likely overexposure. It kept popping out here and there during last decade too, ofc, but never made real waves anymore. Now I'm wondering whether this particular trend actively tries to make a comeback (should we blame current makjang craze for that?) or it's simply coincidence.

They had me at “Lee Jae-wook” and then had me again at “mystery-romance sageuk” so that’s one I’m watching out for. Hopefully the romance is each of them with other people though…

But so much of this sounds so fun! I’d love to see Hwang In-youp be in something I can actually watch (stayed far away from Why Her?), and Oh Jung-se is always great. I’ve only seen Go Ah-sung in Tracer (and Snowpiercer), but she’s solid and something tells me the artist and husband are going to be the same person, which already sounds entertaining to watch.

Ro-woon is always worth watching for the height differences with FLs alone (though I like him in other capacities too), and Choo young-woo and Ju Ji-hoon together would be way too much to resist. I’m even going to try out The Good Bad Mother, so it’s a clean sweep of interest!

Trigger Warning: I know this is not the place but please indulge me. I read about yet another young life lost all too soon from the KPop world. This genre is the source of so much joy to countless people worldwide but it seems surviving in it is arduous in the extreme (and the KD world is not much better). This is a brutal industry and it decimates sensitive souls. It is hard not to be affected by the loss of anyone in so much pain be it famous or not. I wish they could have endured and felt better. Vale.
