A K-drama with a great cast and easily available on Netflix - what can go wrong? Dystopia!

A Scifi can built any world, but it still must have internal integrity. What have we got here: A comet strike wipes out most of humanity with only 1% surviving (which would equal the world's population in Roman times). Korea is a desert. There is now a lack of oxygen and only a wealthy, selected group has access to it via a delivery system.

The oxygen is delivered by trucks which are attacked by bandits in cars. These cars look suspiciously old, as if they are running with a combustion engine - which can not work, if there is a lack of oxygen. But maybe they are running on electricity (how is this produced?) or something entirely futuristic.

Oxygen is produced by plants and 70% of these are in the sea - oceanic plankton. Does a a meteor strike dry out the world's oceans? It might block the sunlight for a while and affect plant life and oxygen production, but once light is back, oxygen will come back, too. Maybe all plant life is destroyed, but then there will be no oxygen at all and no humans either.

So, there is a little oxygen here which means there will also be some plants - for food. If there were food, and the survivors do not look malnourished, there will be oxygen produced by plants. Plants also need water to grow and Korea is a now desert - has the sun dried up all the water? Humans also need water to drink to survive. If there is light and water, there will be photosynthesis and oxygen. Oh dear, I am going round in a circle.

I am not a scientist and I can tolerate plot holes in a drama to a high degree, but in this case I cannot overlook the faults of this dystopia which makes it unwatchable for me, sadly so.

At least you watched enough to find plot holes. It was boring as hell that I could not watch ep 1 completely.

Glad to know I wasn't the only one to think "boring" when watching haha

this was to be predicted. I have been saying this since the first news, like how do cars run, and for example, no concrete building can stand without oxygen. they crumble. plus everyone would be deaf.

Glad to know I wasn't the only one who struggled to get through the first episode. I don't think the lengthy animated intro did the show any favors. It basically invited the viewer to think critically about the world-building and discover the lack of logic. The show might have fared better by dropping the viewers right into the conflict and gradually revealing the particulars of their dystopian society.

I agree. It was was a very weak opening.

I didn't mind the graphics too much because it just made me think it's homage to the source material.

You might have point about maybe starting in the middle of the action. But who knows

The cars had me as well: these models are on the streets right now or were several years ago!

The Volkswagen Golf / Rabbit "Refugee No 34" drives in the contest can take a lot, but it cannot run without fuel. Fuel for regular engines is so difficult to produce, it just does not make sense to have this kind of vehicle.

This would have been a cool movie, but six episodes are definitely too much.

Ah, a movie! Yeah, this could've probably been a movie. It wouldn't necessarily be a stand out movie but yeah, this certainly could edited down to a movie and everything would play out exactly the same.

I can't think of any point that was developed or involved enough to be seen in episodes rather than a single 2 hour movie.

my writer colleagues take is this is allgory not sci fi bc if they cannot explain it with real science you cannot call it science fiction and to apply a poetical brain when watching, bc allegory means a "what if" and it doesnt need the backing. If you add magic, it would be fantasy but I assume it doesnt.

It’s troubling to see Woo Bin’s character smoking given his health concerns.
Wish they had avoided it.

My sentiments exactly! Having him smoke is just reckless, especially since it is totally unnecessary for the plot.

I do not mind PPL in Kdramas, but the excessive Marlboro-PPL is just too much!

That was an insane plot hole. Ot of all the plot holes, this one made the least amount of sense to me.

That's what I thought! I mean a common person/casual viewer likely wouldn't know but the fact that I know he had some nose/throat thing made it so weird to me that of all things, he was smoking.

And this is why it's bad to know entertainers' personal/real lives.

I was surprised his agency didn’t take care of this. It’s not a minor health concern for them to let it pass.

Woo Bin wasn't smoking. He refused to. But the director wanted to keep it in as the webtoon character was always portrayed as such so he said they had to use CGI for the smoking scenes.

The director answered to this.

The original character of the webtoon always smokes, so PDwanted to stay faithful to the webtoon. But the smoke was 100% CGI to protect KWB's health.

Atleast here in the US, they don't use real cigarettes in smoking scenes. it's all fake. Like, using cola for "whiskey", or taking "stage sips". I just assumed that was the case here as well. Also, Woo Bin's cancer was not caused due to smoking ("Nasopharyngeal carcinoma, classified as a squamous cell cancer, has not been linked to excessive use of tobacco." - I know becoz I work for a cancer org). However, I agree that promoting smoking in general is not something "cool". Hence...atleast the fake cigarettes during filming to keep the actors safe. If the director wanted that character to be portrayed that way, I am sure Woo Bin was a professional and did it for the show in a safe way.

I am confused. Why do people remove the mask when they need to fight?
Is it for better visibility for us audiences :)

Well, at least it was short and wrapped up a single season because I certainly wouldn't watch 6 more episodes of it.

I don't even know how to describe it. It's not the worst thing a person could possibly watch but it's not something I would necessarily suggest for any particular reason. I'm sure there's people who enjoyed this and would rewatch or recommend this but I'm not one of them.

I didn't hate it and I did watch the entire thing but I'm just feeling like "well, that was a thing". The final episode really made me wonder if this was going to be another two parter because so much happened really fast and was also extremely underwhelming (to me) at the same time. The thing I disliked the most was the mutant deliverman's capture. To me, it was reliant on willful stupidity and that just grates on me. In my head I can rationalize it as he was just being emotional and reacting without thought but watching it play out just had me thinking "really was a useless death."

Oh! One thing that also came to mind is this is once again going to be a reason for people to be hesitant & reluctant to get vaccinated😮‍💨. (I'm American so...oh, the issues with vaccines).

I'm mildly curious the source material after seeing this version of the story.

I fell asleep twice within 30 mins of the first episode. Then i wondered why am i even making an effort to watch it.

The science doesn't make sense. Even worse is that there is no consistency. Someone takes off the mask while fighting, Someone puts it on - like is there oxygen or not.

But the worst part is that it is -------
Boring boring boring

The oxygen and mask was really confusing. It’s like there are no rules for this.
If you are basing an entire premise on lack of oxygen they should have Atleast got those rules to be consistent.
They take off the mask so we can see their face I guess.

This drama had different plots but never really deepened them like the mutant one. The young boy and 5-8 seemed different but we didn't really know how, why, etc. The villain was sick but again they didn't give informations...

There was the kind of drama based on action where is better to not think.

The best thing about this is its only 6 episodes and there's Kim Woo Bin. Might satisfy as a pure action binge watch but other than that it was hard to emotionally connect to or rationally make sense. It had a lot of elements haphazardly thrown in with no proper fleshing out of any so it sometimes just felt lacking even with so many plot devices in place. Wasn't the worst but definitely nothing to write home about.
Would give a 5/10.

I completed all 6 episodes during the weekend and I'm not ashamed to admit that I enjoy it. I didnt leave behind my brain when I watched it, but futuristic (I'm not allowed to call it sci-fi, right?) or cyberpunk is one of my favourite genres and why not to an actionpacked show loaded with handsomes like KWB and SSH? 😂

I feel like Kim Woo-bin didn't do much here, just sleep walking.
K drama never excels in this kind of genre, any way nice try.
They casted all actors with dramatic eyebrows for reason lol

Come on, suspend disbelief! This is a sci-fi with a great message about climate change, about using social inequality to create division and how money/power corrupts. Well acted over a short 6 episodes. Take heed this may be a taste of our future the way things are going.
