[Drama chat] Your current top 10 dramas (2023 version)

Believe it or not, it has already been a year since we started chatting about and sharing lists of our top 10 dramas of all time.

Since we’re all fanatics here, it seems like a worthy practice to visit this list-making task annually and see what’s changed (or not changed). What new titles came along and claimed a spot on your list? Was there an older drama you watched that stole your heart (and booted off a title from your list)? Did your tastes and preferences change, causing one of last year’s favorites to drop to #11?

It’s time to reassess, readdress, and dive into your current top 10 dramas.

Share your (new) current top 10 drama list below!

Oooh, my top ten dramas EVER will look very different from my top ten K-dramas, so I'll do K-dramas first.

I Can Hear Your Voice, because it changed everything - it changed how I view my own tastes, opened me up, wrecked me, put me back together again, and although it has fallen from my graces as rewatches exposed its flaws, it will always have a place here
Thirty But Seventeen, because it depicts a perfect world that washes me clean with every rewatch
Age of Youth 2, because it sees me
You're Beautiful, because it was my second K-drama and my actual first taste of what is special about Korean dramas, and caused a fiercely loyal love for Park Shin-hye that has never left me
Healer, because I've never seen a story about intergenerational trauma done to such pitch-perfect perfection, and these actors were born to play these characters
You From the Stars, because it did everything right at exactly the right time and I literally crave it every winter
Extraordinary You, because it made me fall in love with existential fiction and the meta of storytelling
Reply 1988, because it was the last drama I watched with my Mum, a masterpiece I will never be able to finish
Finally Shining Inheritance, because it's an amalgamation of everything I love about K-dramas, and stories in general

I had to cut out Go Back Couple and Live for this, which was beyond painful, but this feels right - my list is made up of the dramas that bring me the most comfort.

Gaaaah, Cheese in the Trap and My Liberation Notes also just missed the cut, which hurts, and I'm sad that none of Seo Hyun-jin's dramas made it either - in a perfect world, all my favourite actresses would have made it

I want to make a list for J-dramas too, because they're my first love (and if I did a combined list, it would mostly be these, which are backed by the power of nostalgia and that feels like an unfair advantage).

Hana Yori Dango, because it was the first and is now a core part of my personality
Gokusen, because it makes my heart soar
Unnatural, because it's one of the few dramas that touches the sharp and squishy parts of my brain at once
Shiranakute ii Koto, because it encapsulates the uniqueness of how J-dramas are written, with a kickass heroine to boot
Hana Nochi Hare, because it had no right being as amazing as it is and it's everything good about shoujo
Hana Kimi, because it's still the funniest drama ever and massively informed my sense of humour - and Nakatsu is still one of my favourite characters in all of fiction
Buzzer Beat, because it's the best romance drama ever made
Jimi ni Sugoi, because it took fansubbers over a year to finish it for good reason
Nijiiro Karute, because there's no other drama about sickness like this, that is compassionate and not manipulative, that made me feel LESS afraid
Last Cinderella, because Haruma Miura is one of a kind

Orange Days, Pride, NigeHaji, Shitsuren Chocolatier, MIU 404, and Yamato Nadeshiko are ones that didn't make it

I’m glad you used that picture because that’s one of my new faves. My Top Ten list has not changed much but recent newcomers to the list are definitely CALL IT LOVE and pending the finale - don’t disappoint me!! - DR. CHA. Sorry to say that although there are many dramas I have enjoyed over the last couple of years, not many have touched my heart.

Looking at last year’s list…I would say nothing has changed yet.

1. Someday or One Day (Taiwanese)
2. King2Hearts (Korean)
3. Stranger (Korean)
4. Reply 1997/1988 (Korean)
5. Mare (Japanese)
6. Hormones (Thai)
7. It’s Okay Not to be Okay (Korean)
8. 1 Litre of Tears (Japanese)
9. Just Between Lovers (Korean)
10. Hospital Playlist (Korean)

The only two dramas I watched in the last year that came close to making it onto the list were Little Women(Korean) and Extraordinary Attorney Woo(Korean).

So I’ll try to do top 10 Kdramas instead:

1. King2Hearts
2. Stranger (Forest of Secrets)
3. Reply 1997/1988
4. It’s Okay Not to be Okay
5. Just Between Lovers
6. Hospital Playlist
7. Vincenzo
8. Extraordinary Attorney Woo
9. Our Beloved Summer
10. Move to Heaven

Honorable Mentions:
Life
Little Women

2. Reply 1988
3. Startup
4. Hometown chachacha
5. Business proposal
6. Cinderella and the four knights
7. Doctor Cha
8. Abyss

I didn’t like the others so much, so there are only 8. Hopefully over the years the list will grow

This type of post is a great way to find dramas to add to your watch list although some dramas on beanies lists are of their time. When we watch them now for the first time they don't make the criteria but watched at that point they really were classics.

This is really difficult because there are dramas that could be in this list (according to the grades I gave them or to how much I enjoyed watching them). Anyways, this is a list of some of my favorite k-dramas:

_ Prison Playbook.
_ Queen Seon Deok.
_ Flower Boy Next Door.
_ Misaeng.
_ Live up to your name.
_ Twenty-five twenty-one.
_ At a distance, spring is green.
_ Hospital Playlist.
_ The Nokdu Flower.
_ Start-up.

The only C-drama that could be in the list is Meet Yourself (but I have only watched two C-dramas so far).

It's a nice mix of shows I'm really fond of and objective masterpieces - what was your criteria for choosing these? I focused on ones I rewatch all the time

Required fields are marked *

These are dramas that I graded 10 (Prison Playbook) or 9'5 or 9. All of these are series that I enjoyed watching, which made me feel lots of different emotions, or left me with a "feel good" sensation, or I fell in love with some of the characters... or are dramas which I have thought a lot about, even months after finishing them.

But as I said, there are some other shows that I could have included too.
As a side note I have to say that I have been watching dramas only for a year and a half (and about a hundred dramas) and I have lots of series to watch yet :)

- Arang and the Magistrate
- My Mister
- Sky Castle
- Just Between Lovers

I've been reading and enjoying this site for a while, and this is my first post on Dramabeans. I just graduated with my PhD, and am enjoying my drama hobby before starting a new job in July. I watched my first drama in 2018, and got my mom into dramas a couple of years ago, so now it's a shared hobby! My current top ten dramas are:
1. Into the Ring/Memorials (I love the principled main leads, the unique cinematography, and that it's a true quirky rom-com while also being a political satire.)
2. Hello, Me! (I love the personal growth in confidence and self acceptance, and Kim Young Kwang as one of the sweetest chaebols ever.)
3. Thirty But Seventeen (watched while taking my 17 day comprehensive written exam last spring; so comforting and cathartic.)
4. The Best Hit (so heart-warming!)
5. Unlock My Boss (loved the relationships, and the nice and kind ML who positively influenced others.)
6. The Fiery Priest (so much fun, and such a wonderful cast of characters - every interaction was fascinating to watch.)
7. Bossam: Steal the Fate (Jung Il Woo & Kwon Yuri are magnetic. I listened to the instrumental OST on repeat while writing my dissertation.)
8. Pegasus Market (quirky, eccentric, warm, and utterly delightful.)
9. Moonshine (loved the ML's character and the cinematography style.)
10. The Tale of Nokdu (it has everything, including a great ending.)

Huge congratulations! I discovered dramas in the wake of finishing my PhD and they helped so much with my recovery. I'm so glad to hear that you have a bit of time before starting your new job, and dramas seem like a great way to spend it!

Dramas have been a great hobby for me to cope with the stress of the PhD :) I love the great storytelling and the emotions. Yay, I'm so glad you're also an Unlock My Boss fan!!! I absolutely agree about the ML. I watched it during a binge of absolutely everything Gong hyo-jin's done back in, like, 2014 or something 😂

My first drama of hers was Biscuit Teacher Star Candy, and for Jang Hyuk it was Fated to Love You (which has one of my favourite first halfs - if the back half was as good, it would have easily made this list)

Fated to Love You (which has one of my favourite first halfs - if the back half was as good, it would have easily made this list)

Same! I loved the first half and still think it should have ended at ep. 14 with Jang Na-ra's character accepting the SML's proposal. "Top Ten First Halves of Dramas" would be another list entirely.

5

Gong Hyo-jin is also in my list with Ruler of Your Own World. Lee Bo-young and Lee Sun-kyun are also in their twice. If I was more strategic I'd try to get more of my favorite actors in there, but then it wouldn't quite be the same kind of list.

2

@elinor Oh! I have a "Top Ten First Halves of Dramas" too!

4

@elinor top ten first halves of dramas would be brilliant but I think it would definitely need to be top 25 as so many dramas didn’t make the cut because the endings sucked but I had loved them up to a point.

6

Fated to Love You was my first encounter with both Jangs. I loved everything about it except for the Noble Idiocy, though it did set the stage for that hot kiss at the press conference!

2

Jang Hyuk was also the person who made me an obsessive kdrama watcher as well. I'd seen a couple of others before that -- Coffee Prince, Time Between Dog and Wolf -- but I didn't much care for them. But then I watched Robber (2008) and was completely hooked on kdrama. Jang Hyuk is the best gigolo ever!

Hospital Playlist - The main leads interactions and the patients’ stories
Prison Playbook - The cell crew and that everyone thought he was lacking in brains yet he had a proper understanding of the play, at all levels.
Reply 1988 - Just because….
Twenty Five, Twenty One - It’s the way this one made me feel
Be Melodramatic - so funny and yet so sad, I loved the Fab Four.
Yumi's Cells - The concept of the cell village, it was a joy to watch. Babi in real life was as gorgeous as I thought he would be.
Mr Queen - hysterically funny so I was able to cope with the palace politics.
Good Manager so much to love; the basement crew, the cleaner, the unspoken love that turned a cold hearted man into a bashful boy, Chief Kim’s interaction with the baddies. I laughed hysterically at least once every episode.
Jealousy Incarnate the friends’ battle on the beach
Salon de Nabi - new entry, well developed back stories for all the characters, great setting, sensitive issues handled well.

Meet yourself - Chinese A beautiful village setting and the best male lead across all three drama nations
Go Ahead - Chinese My favourite Chinese drama about family, with the best father figure
The Evolution of our love - Chinese I preferred it to Korean version I couldn’t watch the other versions as I remember too much of the story
Ten miles of Peach blossoms - My first Chinese fantasy, dealing with epic stories across thousands of years God’s fighting amongst themselves and living as humans at times.
Remembrance of things past - Chinese This covered some serious topics and had a great female friendship group of women
Silent - Japanese Shows the issues with identity and integration when transitioning between the hearing and deaf communities
First Love - Japanese The impact of a forced end to a beautiful first love following a dramatic event.
Why I dress up for love - Japanese Shows challenges of members of a house share during the time they live together.
Rational Life - Chinese A story about the challenges of making electric cars mainstream and the prejudices of relationships where the female is in her 30’s and the male is in his early 20’s.
Full time wife escapist - Japanese contract marriage exploring the division of labour

First Love was lovely in terms of what we remember when someone has touched your heart or moved you but simply can't recall. The storytelling device of slowly revealing what people knew about the female lead vs what she experienced was classic!

I didn’t have a full 10 last year because I was still too new to dramaland, and it’s changed a little – now I’m spoiled for choice! In alphabetical order, not ranking (which would be impossible):

• Alchemy of Souls, because it was such cracky, crazy fun and the best collective beanie watch
• Because This Life Is Our First for all the emotions of couplehood and Lee Min-ki’s second-best role – and that kiss.
• Beyond Evil for the mesmerizing, twisty plot and relationships, the atmospheric music, and most of all for the amazing pairing of Shin Ha-kyung and Yeo Jin-goo.
• Circle – did I say mesmerizing, twisty, and Jin-goo already?
• Extraordinary You for the meta-storytelling, gorgeous visuals, and fantastic young cast
• Healer for being Healer
• Just Between Lovers/Rain or Shine for the found family, heartbreak and recovery, perfect OST, and gritty/beautiful Busan
• My Liberation Notes for Lee Min-ki’s best role and its extraordinary writing and art direction
• Stove League for baseball, Park Eun-bin, Namgoong Min, the ensemble cast, and so much heart
• W - Two Worlds for the world-building, the layers of intricate clues and details, and Lee Jong-suk at his cockiest and coolest

Honorable mentions/tie for 10th:
• Chief Kim
• Crash Landing on You
• I’m Not a Robot
• Queen Inhyun’s Man/Queen and I

I’m in the middle of Stranger/Forest of Secrets right now; I completely expect this to break into the top 10.

When you mentioned BTLIOF as Lee Min-ki’s second-best role, I was ready to reply to ask what could be the first-best. Then I immediately thought My Liberation Notes, and there it is at #8. I couldn’t agree more. His first and second best role and performance.

When did you first enter beanieland? You've done a great job on watching some of the greats first if it was recently (last few years or so)

December 2021. I give DB 95% of the credit for steering me toward the good stuff - every pre-2022 show on my list except Crash Landing (my gateway drama) was a beanie rec. I could happily rewatch all of the ones you listed any time, but there are so many more good dramas out there. Just reading this post has added about 20 to my watch list.

Isn't cheating the point with lists like this? 😆

My frequent-rewatch and absolute-top-ten (or more) dramas lists would be different, too. And there are even a couple of scenes I rewatch from Nevertheless and Pretty Noona, which are otherwise on the short list of Dramas That Should Not Exist.

It would be great to see everyone's "Most Fun Dramas Watched" - I feel like that's a different thing from "Best Dramas" and leaves room for those epically awful shows that were still highly entertaining.

That's actually a pretty long list - there are a surprisingly large number of shows where I nearly bailed after the first episode but was grateful later that I continued watching (The Return of Iljimae and Mixed Up Investigation Agency come to mind).

Ooooh that would be an interesting list. Or perhaps a list of dramas you didn't think you'd like and never watched... until you totally binged them months/years after they came out.

I think that would be a list too. I was like that with Our beloved summer. I didn't want to watch someone moping for most of the drama (hence my dropping Bora) I usually like Choi Wooshik dramas, I loved him in Hogu’s love so I decided to try it months after it came off air and I am so glad I did.

It’s true my top 50 leaves me most content as I don't feel like I am dismissing the dramas that got an 8 as mood wise they gave me what I wanted at the time. The main reason for watching K dramas is the way they make me feel. Sometimes, the only reason a drama got a lower mark is the the influence of the trends at the time, the noble idiocy that went on too long, the second female lead who was too much etc. A character dies for no reason…no, I can’t let it go, Unlock the boss🥺
Love all, play was a prime example the male lead’s family were toooooooo negative and took up too much air time. Adjusting for the unwanted elements and you have a really cute couple, with so many bonus couples and bromance.

Required fields are marked *

A character dieing for no reason is the reason Unlock the Boss isn't making the top 10 cut for me too. And then there's Trolley who went on the be something so jarring that I do not understand why it went that way.
They're clearly good pieces that were ready to knock off my standing list but they all did something that sent them off top 10.

3

Shooting stars is the one that I am most gutted about as the revenge plot and dodgy housekeeper were the two elements that stopped that being my place of joy for the duration. I nearly dropped it one week but the weecap and comment section kept me going until we came out the other side. I was so glad I stayed but the frustration with unnecessary darkness in my joyful watches really takes the edge off.

3

Agree! Kdramas are fabulous for bringing - wringing? - out emotions!! And, annoyances like that unnecessary TOT or a serial murderer in a rom com, and it will not join my top favorites list.

Hurray for That Fool!!

(in no particular order)

On The Verge of Insanity
Psychopath Diaries
Into The Ring
Sky Castle
Matrimonial Chaos
Do You Like Brahms?
My Ajusshi
Goblin
My Wife Is Having An Affair This Week
Misty

In a different mood I could write another ten that would included:
Secret Love Affair
A Wife's Credentials
The Smile Has Left Your Eyes
etc.

I was very sad when I realized I had to cut Mother from my top 10 because it was such an excellent show. And my introduction to Son Suk-koo. Was genuinely terrified of him until I watched BTS footage of him with the young (and great) Heo Yool. That's how convincing he was.

In no particular order (I don't have a top top, just 10 I love pretty much equally depending on what mood I'm in):

1. Vincenzo (I was never bored, the OST is awesome, and it has the perfect ending)
2. King2Hearts (The romance in this one is epic, LSG is so charming, and even with that goofy scene of the female villain wiping chocolate on the car window there was real suspense in almost every frame)
3. Seven Days Queen (A leading pair with excellent chemistry, a fast-paced plot, and an ending that acknowledged the true historical facts with just enough kdrama magic to leave a sweet and not bitter impression)
4. One Spring Night (My favorite JHI role, immersive setting and OST, and a slice-of-life feel that was never trite. Very romantic, too)
5. Call it Love: (Even though I wanted just a bit more from the ending, as far as I'm concerned this drama is pretty much the perfect character-driven romance)
6. Do You Like Brahms? (This one gave me all the feels and made me fall in love with both PEB and KMJ)
7. Alchemy of Souls: (Wildly entertaining. Plus, I love it when I think a drama is going to be a hot mess and I end up only loving it more with each episode. Jang Uk will forever be one of my favorite characters of all time, and the show deserves major props for successfully recasting the FL halfway through without missing a beat)
8. The Smile Has Left Your Eyes: (This drama is flawed, but I binged it over the course of three days, found SIG ridiculously compelling in a problematic role, and thought the main pair had explosive, believable chemistry.)
9. Secret Love Affair: (The writing, directing, and performances are spot-on with nary a stumble across 16 incredibly evocative, suspenseful, and, at times, dark episodes. Plus, the perfect ending)
10. Healer: (One of the very first kdramas I ever watched and the only 20-episode one that didn't waste one single second, imo. I love everything about this one, and fear JCW will never, ever get another role this good)

Honorable Mention: 25/21 (The ending still haunts me, but I acknowledge this is an extremely well done drama)
