L calculates his revenge in Numbers

Well, it looks like I may have to eat my words. MBC’s upcoming drama Numbers: Watchdogs in a Concrete Jungle isn’t just about math after all — murder just got added to the mix. Am I thrilled about this latest development? Not entirely, since I was hoping for something along the lines of Misaeng. Am I intrigued by the infinite (heh) possibilities this brings to the table, though? Most definitely.

The drama’s first teaser opens with our protagonist Jang Ho-woo, played by L (Secret Royal Investigator). Awakening on the cold, hard ground on a snowy night, he’s faced with his worst nightmare. His loved one — presumably a parent, judging by the gray hair — lies dead next to him, bleeding out from a head wound. Above them, up on a ledge and just out of sight, a man watches.

Is he the murderer? Is he merely a witness? We don’t know just yet, but Ho-woo is determined to track him down. He’s found one lead he can follow, and he’s not about to lose its scent. And so, Ho-woo steels himself, puts on a brave face, and gets himself employed at Taeil Accounting Firm.

That’s how he meets the senior manager Han Seung-jo, played by Choi Jin-hyuk (Zombie Detective). Right off the bat, the two don’t get along. Our first glimpse of their interaction consists of Seung-jo grabbing Ho-woo’s collar and slamming him up against a wall, and judging by Ho-woo’s furious glare, the antagonism is mutual.

We don’t see them in this teaser, but rounding out the cast are Choi Min-soo (Extracurricular) as Taeil’s vice president; Yeonwoo (The Golden Spoon) as Ho-woo’s direct superior; and fellow Infinite member Lee Sung-yeol (Time of Memory) as a deal partner director at Taeil.

As much as I love a good mystery, I’m hoping the accounting firm setting doesn’t get reduced to a mere backdrop. Being the only high school graduate in an office of bachelor’s degree holders, Ho-woo already has an underdog story all laid out for him. In the midst of solving the root cause of that devastating tragedy, I’d like to see Ho-woo overcome the odds and work his way up the corporate ladder.

Directed by Kim Chil-bong (The Second Husband) with scripts written by Jung Ahn and Oh Hye-seok, Numbers: Watchdogs in a Concrete Jungle premieres in June.

Choi Min-soo! I'm happy to see him in new drama! He was great in Extracurricular.

L in a new drama and Infinite members who get the name and the rights of their group, I'm really happy for them.

Perhaps MBC’s NUMBERS is sliding from MISAENG (2014) into TRACER (2021). Regardless I will be there. I am not passing on a Choi Jin-hyuk and Choi Min-soo reunion.

O/T. Both these guys have been favorites of mine since my early days in kdramaland when I watched both in the great PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (2014/15) (Kocowa). Highly recommended.

As to CJH slamming L into a wall perhaps he was channeling his inner Park Gwang-ho from TUNNEL (2017). Another 5 start performance from CJH and highly recommended.

Ohh… another number cruncher drama. I’ll watch out for this.

I second Solstices in “hoping the accounting firm setting doesn’t get reduced to a mere backdrop”. I have already high expectations it will be number-crunching based on the title alone. 😉

The preview of the drama looks promising. Due to the presence of CJH in the cast, I immediately remembered one of his dramas - "Justice". This was one of my favorite dramas of 2019 with a dark and tragic plot.

Excuse me Trailer, you focussed on the wrong male lead.
What this drama needs is more Choi Jin Hyuk voiceover. I hope this will be rectified in the final cut.

Apparently not a normal day in an South Korean corporate office if someone isn't plotting revenge and/or murder (or both if you're the Evil Chaebol with some tragic villain origin story) 😂 Revenge by numbers (with numbers) - sounds cool though, I'm in still. Hoping the revenge won't be too generic that I feel the need to fast-forward - or if this does happen to be the case, please let there be compelling side plots or relationships that I can emotionally invest in instead!

So there's murder in it? Not surprised, but sort of disappointed.
