News Bites: May 6, 2023

  • A string of new posters have been released Wavve’s slice-of-life series Park Ha-kyung’s Travels, following Lee Na-young (Romance Is a Bonus Book) through the countryside in South Korea. With the simple but relaxing goal of walking, eating, and staring off into space, we can wind down and rest with our heroine come May 24. [News]

  • As for tvN’s Delightfully Deceitful, the promos this week spend some time on the second leads, with Yoon Park (Please Send a Fan Letter) playing Chun Woo-hee’s (Be Melodramatic) probation officer, and Park So-jin (Bora! Deborah) as Kim Dong-wook’s (My Perfect Stranger) psychiatrist. The revenge drama premieres later this month on May 29. [Osen (1), (2)]

  • Apink’s Yoon Bomi (Please Don’t Date Him) is considering an offer for tvN’s Queen of Tears, taking on the role of Kim Ji-won’s (My Liberation Notes) secretary. The romance also stars Kim Soo-hyun (One Ordinary Day), with scripts by Park Ji-eun (Crash Landing on You) and co-directing by PD Jang Young-woo (Bulgasal: Immortal Souls) and PD Kim Hee-won (Little Women). [Ilgan Sports]
  • Speaking of tvN, Cha Chung-hwa (Kokdu: Season of Deity) confirmed casting for See You in My 19th Life, reuniting with Shin Hye-sun (Mr. Queen). Slated to broadcast this June, we may need to start a relationship flowchart with Cha playing a niece to Shin’s 17th reincarnation, who then re-meets her in her 19th form. [MBC]

  • With the premiere fast approaching, more stills have been released for Disney+’s Race, rouding out the story’s world with a look at the supporting cast. Starring Lee Yeon-hee (Welcome to Wedding Hell), Hong Jong-hyun (Stock Struck), Moon Sori (Queenmaker), and Yunho (Meloholic), the office series launches on May 10. [MBC]
  • ENA’s Happiness Battle released news stills as well, showcasing the main five in our group of moms: Lee El (My Liberation Notes), Jin Seo-yeon (One the Woman), Cha Ye-ryun (Gold Mask), Park Hyo-joo (Now We Are Breaking Up), and Woo Jung-won (Under the Queen’s Umbrella). The suspense-thriller premieres at the end of the month, on May 31. [Newsen (1), (2)]

I hope Yoon Bomi accepts the offer. I’ll watch Queen of Tears mainly for her if ever. Love her!

1. Looking forward to Delightfully Deceitful. And I must say, Yoon Park is looking good in those photos.

2. Can't wait to see Kim Ji-won and Kim Soo-hyun star together in Queen of Tears.

3. I hope Race is as good as it looks. Disney+ did something right with Call It Love, so I'm optimistic.

1. Park Ha-kyung’s Travels: Did Wavve think those lifeless posters would make people want to watch this?

2. Delightfully Deceitful: If nothing else, this will have lots of pretty people, although the first trailer looks really dark. More Yoon Park and more Sojin is never a bad thing. I'm still annoyed about Song Deok-ho missing out on this and trashing his career with his military service evasion stunt (although the far bigger issue is the entire mandatory service structure in the first place).

3. Queen of Tears: That cast! Please say yes, Bomi!

4. 19th Life: Somehow this show feels like a step down for Shin Hye-sun, but I like her and will probably give it a shot anyway.

@elinor As far as Park Ha-kyung's travels, you seem to think that this is a show that is supposed to be enjoyed. No. This is a meditative drama, involving serious contemplation. It involves Lee Na Young looking thoughtful for 16 episodes. I for one will welcome a break from dramas where things actually happen, one where I can doze off in front of the t.v. in peace.
