Premiere Watch: Black Knight

Time slot: Friday (single drop)
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Sci-fi, action
Episode count: 6

Reasons to watch: Another sci-fi series from Netflix arrives, and I’m about as excited as I am skeptical — but funny enough, both of those emotions seem to coexist just fine. Our setting is a futuristic dying Earth that’s depleted of oxygen and, from the looks of it, full of crime and desperation. Kim Woo-bin plays one of the heroic deliverymen responsible for getting oxygen to people. But it’s never as simple as a (deadly) day job, right? He winds up going against the story’s big bad (Song Seung-heon), with Esom and Kang Yoo-seok joining the fight.

Sci-fi world-building is arguably hard to pull off in any capacity, but it’s especially hard for K-dramas. Since they’re generally more character focused and built around established patterns, it’s challenging to get stories that can pull off both concept and plot. But you have to hand it to them for trying. Lord knows I’ll keep tuning in.

TL;DR: KIM. WOO. BIN.

Dystopic future! Song SeungHeon! WooBin!!

I'm all in for the trainwreck and if it's any good I'll be delighted.

I like this cast photo, with Esom's dress having one leg exposed, mirrored by the stars pocketed hand restraining one side of his jacket, and then the frontless waistcoat of Kang Yoo-seok. The fashion all says "oxygen depleted dystopia" to me.

Can you provide an analysis of the olive green suit jacket as well?

I believe this photo was taken early in the shooting process, when the working title was "Green Acres" and Woo-bin was cast as a high end real estate agent marketing oxygen-producing pasture properties--hence the khakis and stylish sandals.

Song Seung-heon's hanbok-collared suit jacket clearly places him within the tradition of corrupt old-money elites whose greed created and exacerbates economic inequality by exploiting the basic needs of the working class. I'm still trying to figure out if the red panel behind his backside is part of the stage set or the exposed drop seat of his long johns underwear, demonstrating that he is so powerful he can literally show his a** to the masses without consequence.

“TL;DR: KIM. WOO. BIN.”

Exactly! It’s been awhile since I’ve seen him. Couldn’t finish Our Blues.
