Stealer: The Treasure Keeper: Episodes 7-8

Our little team is growing, but so is the danger of their mission. Theirs is a game of wits, and one that requires thinking ten steps ahead of their opponent — but they’ve got more than one opponent to stay ahead of, and none should be underestimated.

Dae-myung retrieves the coin from Boss Jang’s laser-filled safe, but there are two problems: 1) moving the coin made the laser patterns change and 2) Boss Jang’s minions are on the way. Thinking quickly, Dae-myung slides the coin harmlessly across the floor to Min-woo and Chang-hoon, so they can get it out of the hotel while he and Choon-ja figure out how to disarm the lasers.

Fortunately, there’s another power switch on this end of the room. Unfortunately, it’s password-protected. But fortune wins out, because Boss Jang did give Min-woo the second password, and she’s stayed behind to help Dae-myung.

After disabling the lasers, the two have to fight their way through Boss Jang’s minions, and they make a pretty great team. Things get a little hairy once they escape out into the hotel common areas — Dae-myung has to shield Min-woo from a volley of bullets, and they end up swinging to ground level together on his wire — but in the end the whole team gets out safely. Everyone lets out a huge sigh of relief, and Dae-myung logs out of his suit for some much-needed rest and alone time.

Correction: they’re all out, but they’re not all safe. On the way back, Chang-hoon is waylaid by Hwin-dal, who knows he’s carrying the coin. Chang-hoon puts up a tremendous fight, even after Hwin-dal pulls out his stabbing pen, but Hwin-dal bludgeons him senseless and takes the coin. With Skunk AWOL, the team can’t get there in time to catch Hwin-dal. But — thank goodness! — Chang-hoon just needs a quick trip to the hospital to get patched up and back on his feet.

So how did Hwin-dal know where the coin would be? Dr. Go sold them out — and that’s why he joined the team in the first place. Not only does Hwin-dal take Boss Jang’s coin from Chang-hoon, but Dr. Go takes the other coin (the one he handed over when Tae-in caught him) and rejoins Hwin-dal elsewhere. Now Chairman Kim has the whole set of seven coins, and Team Karma has… one?

See, the betrayal may have been Dr. Go’s plan from the start, but it was actually Tae-in’s plan all along. He asked Choon-ja to make an exact replica of Dr. Go’s coin (with a slightly adjusted design so as to make it useless for treasure-hunting), confident Dr. Go would steal it back. Best of all, the tracker Choon-ja placed in the fake coin tells them both where it is at all times and whenever it’s close to the other coins.

It’s not long before Chairman Kim moves the coins to his super-secret, super-secure vault. Even Choon-ja can’t discover what all is in there, but she does dig up an interview with the award-winning Japanese architect who designed its booby-trap system: a creepy old man who seems to delight in trapping people in his “games” and who kinda makes the show feel like it’s heading into horror territory. Especially when paired with that unexplained, sinister-looking wooden doll that makes its way into Min-woo’s dreams.

While scoping out the vault facility, Team Karma spends some time getting to know each other better. A surprise party for Min-woo’s birthday, full of food, laughter, and a few tears, drops hints for two potential romances: Dae-myung and Min-woo, of course, but also Tae-in and Choon-ja.

Everyone’s a bit tipsy, and both couples end up in a stumble-and-catch kind of situation, with Tae-in saving Choon-ja from falling in the pool, and Dae-myung stopping Min-woo from tumbling down the stairs (and reminding her of her close encounter with Skunk back in Jeju).

We also learn how Dae-myung and Choon-ja started working together, as she reminisces to distract him from a thunderstorm-induced panic attack. Turns out, she was his first “target.” He’d attempted to “borrow” an artifact from her house just long enough to catch the thieves who sold it to her before the statute of limitations ran out.

Joo-won in Stealer: The Treasure Keeper: Episodes 7-8

She’d incapacitated him and brought him inside for further questioning, partly moved by his passion and the story of his father’s life and murder, and partly intrigued by his intent to find his father’s killer in the process of recovering national treasures. Now, he’s not sure if revenge still drives his mission, but his determination has only gotten stronger.

And finally, Team Karma gets a new team member to replace Dr. Go. Dae-myung’s co-worker, JIN AE-RI (Choi Seol), accidentally finds his Skunk suit while they’re all in Jeju. She initially writes it off as a kink thing (and judges him hard for it), but when the video of him and Min-woo rappelling down to the hotel lobby gets plastered all over the news, Dae-myung has to tell her the truth so she won’t turn him in to the police.

Having found herself sucked into a secret agent caper, Ae-ri assumes her new role with gusto. She even creates passwords for herself and Dae-myung to use at work if they need to talk about secret plans. Dae-myung has no intention of letting her do anything for him, until it becomes clear she’s the perfect person to get Chairman Kim’s fingerprint so they can enter the vault.

With her many masseuse licenses, Ae-ri has an easy in to get up close and personal with Chairman Kim. And she’s so great at the job, too! She gets Chairman Kim talking, laughing, and playing a little game, all so she can put him at ease and convince him to leave his fingerprint on her arm (I’m no expert, but I’m not sure that’s how fingerprints work…).

When it’s finally time to break into the vault, Min-woo and Dae-myung (as Skunk) go in together, while the others watch from their van. The fingerprint works perfectly, but as they enter, the door closes ominously behind them.

That’s because there’s one last reversal in store, and it’s a doozy: Chairman Kim was never fooled. He gave Ae-ri his fingerprint knowing he was letting Team Karma into his vault, and he’s very excited to watch them try to get out alive, let alone steal the coins.

A quick flash-forward sequence shows our heroes separated and in various states of pain and distress, seeming to confirm Hwin-dal’s warning to Dr. Go that death awaits anyone who tries to enter that vault.

Between the giant death trap Team Karma has just stepped into, a new hitman being called in (who massacred a roomful of people and stole their teeth for some reason), and that demon-eyed doll, things are getting dire. But there’s also some interesting movement on Hwin-dal’s side, like letting Chang-hoon live and killing the mentor who made him a killer.

And then there’s Dr. Go, who’s conflicted about sending Team Karma to their doom (probably because he’s Min-woo’s longtime anonymous benefactor). There’s an awful lot of manipulation and betrayal going on, so it’ll be interesting to see where everyone is standing — and who’s standing — when all’s said and done.

I can't even hyperfixate on this show properly because there is no content for it anywhere. 😅😂

Still my favourite thing every week.

The beat-down Viper gave Chang-hoon was properly scary. I flinched when he hit his head. The rest continues to be fun. I liked the conversation on revenge being an inadequate/inappropriate motivator - pretty rare for a kdrama.

I have to say my favourite part of this day remains what a dumbass Skunk is. And not that his cover identity is pretending to be a dumbass but that he himself is a dumbass. It's so endearing.

This show is so much fun while being so self-aware and, while not entirely clever, at the least witty. I continue to enjoy the heck out of it.

Any other Kdrama would have made the birth story of Skunk boring and unimpressive or emotional and pathetic, but this show did it right by making Dae Myung dumb and endearing😂😂

Its always hard for me to know what to say about this one, since its mostly enjoyable fluffy entertainment, but I was struck by the show coming down as hard as it did on the side of patriotism, with the peripheral-to-the-plot visit of Tae-In to the man who donated a cultural treasure in his families possession, flying the Korean flag on on his gate. Of course, it contrasted with the collaborator villain, but it really made explicit the nationalist bent of Skunk's efforts. Maybe that's why what he steals back remains in the basement--it doesn't matter that the public sees it, as long as its somewhere within the bosom of the nation!

The one scene that sent me to google (to no avail, at least in English-language sources) was the scene about whether the descendants of patriots should receive public funds. It felt as though it was referring to a current issue of some debate domestically but I don't know enough about it to say.

It's certainly true that a lot of the children of patriots were kept in poverty while the collaborators, who were part of the ruling class in Joseon, simply moved into positions of power and authority in the new Korea. It's been a theme of a lot of dramas from Gaksital to Good Thief Bad Thief and now this as well. They get rid of the leaders but those who followed them get folded into the new administration.

I'm not sure if the children are getting direct payments or what exactly the show was referring to but I find it interesting this drama could be seen as a call for redistribution. Although with a hefty dose of patriotism layered on top of it.

I did not know donating cultural assets would get continuous payment out of public funds, because usually it is a one time reward along with medals/honour and such stuff. Though I agree, that it is not fair for the descendants of the patriots to continue to live in poverty, I also get why tax payers are against it because from their perspective they would want the money to be spent on better things like education or health infrastructure/facilities/affordability and what not.

That statement about them receiving public funds seemed to be implying he had been getting ongoing payments of some kind although it may just have been a translation error.
If it was just the one off payment then honestly it seems fair. If you're going to eschew a private sale in lieu of donating it then getting a reward seems only fair

You know, this show is so silly and goofy, I never really thought about it. I can agree with the premise that the nation’s cultural artifacts deserve to be held by the nation, not wealthy private collectors, but what’s the point if you’re just gonna shove them in the basement at a police station anyways? And, shouldn’t all of the nation’s cultural heritage be held by the state, not just those acquired illegally?

Honestly, I asked this week if patriotism counts as product placement. Is the SK government supporting the production in any way?

Ae Ri was my favorite character this week, but I wouldn't have imagined a BDSM joke in a Kdrama🤣🤣🤣 I hate toilet humour, but the show made it elegant and funny by giving it a golden bowl image. Also, the twist with the evil granpa knowingly allowing team Karma into his fort was good.

I usually loathe toilet humour but this has to be one of the best uses of it I've seen. Skunk spent an entire episode sneaking around trying to use a toilet 🤣🤣.

Back with, Things:
1. I need more Skunk X Minwoo circus act fights, cos that was so funny, I need to go rewatch it.
2. The Japanese turning lethal horror booby traps into an Art Form™ is like the most Japanese thing I can think of, spot on. (Why did the jar of teeth make me cackle, I have issues)
3. Their little matching Skunk Jackets 😭🥰🖤🤍🦨

The jar of teeth was just so weird and random, it's the kind of thing a serial killer does in a crime thriller but in this it's a group of assassins who carry around pickled teeth jars for literally no reason.

I wonder why the interview with the Reigning Booby Trap Champion where he does nothing but laugh maniacally about people's gruesome deaths for a full minute never aired?

I did find it funny to contemplate an annual Booby Trap Championship, sponsored by the Association of World Booby Trap Professionals. How would they determine the champion--a series of booby trap matches, where the winner would be the one whose booby trap did not allow the volunteer test subject (?) to escape? It would be quite a challenge to set up!

It felt rather like they were referencing the Death Game genre, which is ofc a bigger thing in Japan, as well as actual video games, to me.
Adding, along with several clear pokes at the Secret Agent/ Spy genre, three more genres to this freak show parody amalgamation 😂😂🤭

Anything in this show that is weirdly dark or should be serious, has this cartoonish brush over it.
Indiana Jones Comicbook Villain.
Chang Hoon gets his head smashed in but just walks off the brain damage.
Viper has killed probably 100 people with that pen by now.
Pickled Teeth Assassins.
Etc. 😂😂😂😂

I do love this show, it still continues to be hilarious. The Golden toilet thing was random and played a little bit into stereotypes about Arabs, that I wasn't a particular fan of. It breeds misinformation. I wish kdramas would stop doing that. The only person I have heard of with a golden toilet is an unfortunate former head of state of the US.

no analysis, all I have for this drama is stream of consciousness commentary:

I KNEW SHE WAS GONNA ASSUME HE WAS INTO BDSM... I'm not sure if they translated it correctly, istg she called him a perv

Not Ms. Lee and Captain Jang having a lil romantic moment... and then the other two have their own right after

Shota? More like, So-hot..a. Nvm.
But yeah, he's a 10 but he likes to collect human teeth.

The way you can tell these are Korean actors desperately trying to pronounce Japanese. It'd be cool if they hired actual Japanese actors. I would to love see my fav jdrama actors pop out of nowhere in this random kdrama lol

Things were too wholesome and sweet so far. I was just vibing and having fun but ik something bad was gonna happen and here we are... wtf was that ending scene?? now I'm so scared for Team Karma T-T

Lol we had the same thought about Shota, I see.

And yes I always have a bit of a giggle when you can hear the Korean accent so strongly when they speak Japanese, Mandarin, etc.

First of all, watching this is the most fun I've had watching any TV show in quite a while.

That being said, it's been eight episodes out of 12 and I don't feel I know Dae-myung any better than by the end of the first episode.

I think I understand even Ae-ri better, and she had much less screen time than him. Maybe (highly likely) I'm over thinking this...
