I didn't read the webtoon so I do not exactly have much to say on which one was a better landing. But I do know I enjoyed the drama well enough.
Just a word of thought though. Adaptations can be very tricky. There's the risk of following the material thoroughly to the point that it lacks ingenuity and flexibility even though its original. And there is the risk of it insulting its roots when the source material is taken for granted and used flimsily or without regards to the adapted or like the mess Business Proposal did. You know, for BP, it took reading a fixed ending to know what sort of a huge mess BP was with its ending and it was a major comment to the school of thought that adaptations should be strictly adhered to. But that's aside. All in all, I just hope adapted dramas stopped being critically screen when they veer off the expectations of viewers who have read or watched the adapted material. DB was well reasonable on how they critically criticized SYIM19L for going off material sometimes, but some forums weren't as forgiving.
SYIM19L was better than the webtoon? My biased answer will be yes.

How was a Business Proposal a mess? Didn't everyone end up together in the end?

Business Proposal was a mess? No. Was the last two episodes of Business Proposal a mess? A big fat yes. And while I thought it was normal and okay, it took reading a beanie's (I believe it was one of DB's recappers) Fix That Ending to know how much of a mess the ending particularly the finale episodes of Business Proposal was, and how much information was withdrawn/cut out from the drama, like Kim Min-kyu's character being Haraboji's hidden in plain sight grandson.
Business Proposal is one drama where I wished the screenwriter followed the source material to the very end. Perhaps they wanted to get creative...it didn't land well at all. I remember being shocked and taken aback as what should have been unfolded as I read the fix the ending on my screen. It felt like cheating. For one thing, it made me wish I understand the Korean language so I can go read the webtoon material myself and savor what I lost.

I beg to differ. It would have made Seol In-ah's characters father suffer a more substantial loss to his rejecting Kim Min-kyu's character dating his daughter. And for someone of his mindset, I can savor the look on his face when he realises what he threw away. Just imagine : his daughter called his bullshit and stuck to her decision, the her decision turned out to be a literal goldmine and he might have just threw away his chance at a mutant baby partnership born on love and also secure his daughter retaining control of his company since her husband will have no use for it nor envy her for it.

@jerrykuvira When I watched BP I was still very new to K drama world ( I still am) and it was one of the earliest dramas that I watched. I loved the series, until the last two eosides and I was like 'what the heck!' It was my son who told me it was based on Webtoon and he watched it because he had loved the webtoon and he didn't like the series because the end was awful.

The last episodes destroyed the drama by sticking to the old tropes instead of subverting them.
Go read the article "fix that ending" by @daebakgrits to see what it could have been.

Even though we loved it yes it was a mess precisely because it departed in significant ways from the webtoon (which is why we saw so little of Grandpa) and actually dropped two of the best moments from the webtoon. All because some idiot- probably a corporate executive- had to change the character of the 2 FL's father into a coldhearted calculating version of a Chaebol. In the webtoon he and his daughter may be at odds but he genuinely loves her. That stupid change cost us the wonderful moment when Grandpa rides to the rescue of his other actual grandson, the 2ML, and proves that in fact his daughter is marrying someone with suitable connections - and in fact the same connection to Grandpa' company that she would have made in marrying his other grandson (the ML).
The other great moment is when 2FL comes to the rescue of Grandpa's company by making a deal with her dad (who finally gets what he wants- for his daughter to eventually take over his company).
These things from the webtoon would have made BP far better and spared us the lame last episodes.
These opportunities were lost because someone had to import the tired "evil heartless Chaebol" into a story where it did not belong.
Had these changes not been made BP would have been one of the greatest romcoms of all time- in any language.

Hmm, based on this, I think I don't mind the drama's ending. From what I remember the 2nd couple just chose to do things on their own. She decided to start her own business and he decided to invest in her dream. There's something really nice about that. Maybe in part because I'm not all that into the chaebol thing, the idea of her taking over her father's company like he wants doesn't appeal to me much. And her choosing and deciding to stay with her boyfriend despite his background was way braver and awesome to me than "oh, turns out he really is worthy because he does come from money." I also don't care about her dad enough to care or feel some pleasure at him at the idea of him discovering he lost out on a gold mine of a son in law.
Personally, I prefer when characters separate from toxic influences which can include their parents.
But to each their own. I can understand the webtoon was cathartic and satisfying in its own way which made fans of it disappointed when certain elements weren't included.
For Weak Hero Class 1, I was disappointed about a girl being the straw that broke the camel's back when in the webtoon, there was no girl; just the guy's own feelings of insecurity, resentment, bitterness, jealousy, and envy. While that *is* featured in the drama, the inclusion of the girl just felt needless to me and while I'm still not a fan of it when I think about it, I now get that may have just been the simplest & fastest way of getting the guy to turn on his friend. Especially when she can just be used as a scapegoat ("it's all your fault! Why did you have to blah blah blah?!)

My point about BP and the alternate story created by the drama writers created for the 2ML and 2FL is not that it somehow was not nice- but rather that it created a false narrative that actually threw the story off track- hence the lame last episodes.
In the webtoon the 2FL's father is absolutely not toxic. A little pushy now that his daughter is starting to get a little long in the tooth, but he is otherwise a fairly indulgent father cares about his daughter and her future (and bawls his head off at her wedding BTW). Sure, he wants her to marry the 'right sort of guy' but that comes with the territory that he occupies. Nor was he dead set on marrying her off to Grandpa's family- remember that this was not the first blind date that our 2FL had been set up with.
The first change in course prevented the second great scene- when our 2FL rescues Grandpa's company, thereby paying him back for rescuing her by making it possible for her to marry the 2ML.
The changes that were made were the reason Grandpa largely disappeared from the last episodes- which disappointed even those members of the audience who had never seen the webtoon.

How can you tell whether it was better or not if you didn't read it? XD
You can evaluate the drama, but obv not the comic 😅
Any story can be flawed no matter the type of media, comic, drama, movie, novel...adaptations can change things, potentially make things better, but that's not what happened here! (Of course that's still up for debate ahahah)

Well, I am definitely not an expert here at all. And I can tell from your reply that I might have picked wrongly. But, I can make a guess based on the POVs I came across. They sounded a bit especially petty and more like a do it by the book fan service than a legit food for thought.
I equally have my own grievance with the drama but I do not know if it's in the comics. Cho-won and Do-yoon also appearing in their first lives...that's was the first time in a long time that a past connection trope irked me. Is it the same way in the webtoon @cubely ? If it is, then there's no difference between the comic and the drama, for me.

No, only Ha Do Yoon does appear but in a very unexpected way.**
And in the first life no one (so basically we're just talking about Jieum and Doyoon here) looks like they do in their 19th life, they are different people.
**[tagging SPOILERS just in case] JE and DY were twin sisters in that life 😂
They had to live hiding their identities after their family was falsely accused of treason; then were found out by an old acquaintance and soon after died because of said person..that's what prompted the whole remembering past lives for Jieum..what ended it wasn't her forgiving someone, but her 1st life sister (now Doyoon) being finally happy (with Chowon).

My issue is that major themes and plot points were changed. The drama 19th Life is not the same story as the webcomic, not even remotely. Only the characters' names are the same, and a few random scenes that they decided to keep.

🤣 I liked the adaption made in Yumi’s cells to one charter but I stopped reading the webtoon for 19th life when people started to get killed re the car ‘accident’. I liked the flashbacks to multiple lives in the drama but think they spent too much of the end episodes in the first life so we didn’t see the leads and second couple get together in any real depth.

adaptations are close to never better. and typically they do have plot holes that weren t in the book/manga. Ex. in this case they messed up the adaptation BIG TIME. They cut up a whole plotline, changed storylines and made some ppl from friends to enemies... like what are you even smoking

Webtoon is overall better, no doubt.
But the real problem with the drama is not that it's different but that it is not that good itself.
The pacing, the editing, sometimes the script are not great.
For me it started fine, but slowly went downhill (like its ratings 😭) and never recovered, and by the time I watched the last episodes I just didn't care anymore..that's never a good sign.
I mean, I've been anticipating this drama since last July!! I really wanted to like it, it just didn't work out 🥲

How the first life unfolded was the biggest change probably, and the hardest to accept..
Listen, I understand why they wanted the main actors playing those parts, but it felt so forced!
In the end they added so much more (and unnecessary) drama that the characters development and their relationships suffered 😔

I don't know how ANYONE who read the comic could agree that the drama was better! I should have known after Kiss Sixth Sense barely resembled its source material, but I had high hopes because of the cast, the creative team, and Lee Hye being involved with the production. I should have known, though, that drama adaptations of webcomics apparently are incredibly unfaithful to the source material. Even fans of Summer Strike and A Business Proposal (btw, I loved that drama so no complaints from me there) said as much. Is Yumi's Cells the only exception? Not sure.
Anyway, the comic was actually quite a fresh and modern take on the reincarnated love trope. The drama took all of that and turned it into the same tired cliches we've seen over and over again. There was no need to change any of it. And the drama just BUTCHERED it. I don't know why they even bothered adapting it if they were gonna change it that much. The webcomic's theme was about choice, and the drama made it into a theme about predestination. Pretty much the opposite. If you're gonna adapt material, it's fine to make changes, but when you change themes I'm gonna throw fists. Not only did they change major plot points, they even changed the ending! THE ENDING. They added in a bunch of unnecessary angst that complicated the series and made a story that I was already worried about fitting into 12 episodes even more bloated. They also changed the atmosphere. The webcomic was quite lighthearted and even funny--perhaps too much, considering the story content--but the drama was SO SERIOUS all of the time. I missed some of the funniest moments and jokes from the webcomic.
The comic also placed the characters and relationships first. Ji-eum and her relationships with Seo-ha, Do-yun (yes, in the comic she has a relationship with Do-yun, although it's never romantic), and Cho-won were given top priority. The drama barely focused on the relationships. Poor Do-yun and Cho-won's story was slaughtered. The scenes that they left were rushed. They left out a lot of important story development in terms of both their relationship and Do-yun as an individual overcoming his reluctance to being with Cho-won. They decided to set their romantic scene, which was incredibly intense and romantic in the webcomic, next to a pool for some reason (what is with this director and pools, btw?) when it was supposed to be outside in the rain, mirroring how they met.
They also added in a bunch of weird complications and cliches that the webcomic avoided. They made Seo-ha, Do-yun, and Cho-won all in Ji-eum's first life. They made Min-gi all mysterious and knowledgeable. They made Seo-ha's father a jerk (yet they kept the ultimate ending they gave him, which was perplexing given how different his character in the drama was). They added an evil stepmom-type figure for some reason. They added weird things that they spent way too much time on, like Seo-ha sitting in pools, and a lot of scenes about...

vienibenmio
July 24, 2023 at 4:39 PM
... a lot of scenes about Ji-eum's past lives that were cool cinematically but took up precious time and also made the romance feel a bit weird.
Speaking of the romance, the decision to make Ji-eum retain skills from her past lives made the romance stranger. They also decided to have her constantly reference Ju-won, which she doesn't do in the comic. In the comic, he falls for Ji-eum, not Ju-won. It wasn't helped by the lack of focus in the writing as well as the frantic pace of the plot giving the couple little time to breathe and just be together.
Personally, I think that the writer and maybe director thought the premise was interesting but ultimately decided that they wanted to tell a different story. A story that they seemed to think was better, even though the majority of the stuff that people have been complaining about was the stuff the drama added and the webcomic avoided. I find it incredibly disrespectful. If you're going to adapt material, at least keep the core themes, ideas, and ending. Otherwise, write your own story.
It's sad because I love the cinematography and visuals, and the acting was top notch (although ABY and SHS lacked chemistry, sadly, and I still don't think ABH felt like Seo-ha and was miscast). The OST original tracks were great, too. It had SO much potential and if they had just stuck with the general story structure of the webcomic, with maybe some changes, this could have been SO good.
Things the drama added, for those who haven't been reading my fanwall:
- Ji-eum's father and Do-yun's father weren't involved in Seo-ha's accident
- No one gets sick, there are no negative consequences for meeting people from your past lives (my first "uhhh what" moment of this adaptation)
- Min-gi has a more minor role
- Ji-eum wasn't raised by Ae-gyeong, although she hangs out at her restaurant as an adult
- Seo-ha, Do-yun, and Cho-won were not in Ji-eum's first life (this is officially what made the drama "jump the shark" for me, btw)
- Ji-eum's remembering was about grief and guilt, not revenge
- There is no mistress. Seo-ha's dad loves Seo-ha in his own way and did not cheat, he genuinely grieved his wife.
- The mistress's role is assumed by Seo-ha's aunt, and the mistress's son is Seo-ha's cousin.
- There is far more of a relationship between Seo-ha's uncle and Seo-ha, especially as his dad was more distant.
- Cho-won is not a landscaper, she works for her family's entertainment company that she is set to inherit.
- Ji-eum doesn't remember abilities from her past lives, she just remembers the memory.
- There is nothing about Seo-ha's mom reincarnating. She doesn't show up at all after she dies.
- Ji-eum doesn't forget her 19th life; the comic ends with Seo-ha proposing.
- There are no pools and no flamenco.
- We don't see much of Ji-eum's past lives

I agree I struggled with this. I read the manhwa in between eps and preferred webtoon Seoha & Doyun (omg I loved webtoon Doyun) a lot more as they were so charismatic and funny compared to their drama counterparts.
Yes, SHS & ABH lacked chemistry as well. It was quite off as one scene we had Seo-ha trashing his place cuz he was realizing his feelings for Jieum and was crazy upset and the next he was happily dancing with her at the beach like ???
Their development was not as in-depth and we have the limited number of eps to blame, sadly.

Agreed. Seo-ha and Do-yun both lost their personalities in the drama (I also really missed webtoon Do-yun and his humor). And I also found Seo-ha's feelings for Ji-eum inconsistent and poorly developed. They could have spent more time making the main romance a nice slow burn with a believable build up instead of cramming in every single tragic plot element imaginable.

I should add, I'm not saying the webcomic is perfect. In fact, I didn't really feel that strongly about the main couple there. But it had a very tightly written story that avoided a lot of cliches and the plot devices that can make drama plots frustrating (like miscommunications and noble idiocy) were either outright avoided or minimal.
I wish I knew how Lee Hye really feels about this. She seems to love the drama, but I also imagine she can't take to social media and express outrage, either. If it's genuine, she's far more chill than I am because I can't imagine putting one's heart and soul into a work and seeing it chopped up like this.

In the drama Cho-won is her sister in her first life. Seo-ha, Do-yun, and Min-gi were all in her first life, too.
In the comic Seo-ha wasn't in Ji-eum's first life, so the point is she chooses him. He wasn't some epic hundred year old love story but it didn't matter because she loved him like he was. And ultimately her choices are what set her free.

Can you explain a bit more about what you think was the message of choice in the webtoon? Why did she remember the past lives? What made her change in the 19th life and the how did she do it?
vienibenmio
July 25, 2023 at 8:36 AM
@lixie In the webcomic, Ji-eum has the choice to pursue her lost relationship with what she thinks is her husband (reincarnated as Do-yun) from her first life, which she believes will end the cycle, or stay with Seo-ha. She chooses to stay with Seo-ha and not end the cycle, and that's ultimately what sets her free. It turns out that Do-yun was not her husband but actually her twin sister, and she keeps remembering her past lives because of the guilt she has over her role in her twin sister's death. She is able to let go of that guilt because she sees her "sister" Do-yun happy, because he is now with Cho-won. So, her choice to be with people from her 18th life in her 19th life set in motion the circumstances that in the end allows her to resolve kept her remembering through seeing her "sister" from her first life happy. Which is actually an outcome that she brought about, again, through her own actions of pushing Do-yun towards Cho-won.

Thanks, like I said before it was nice to have all these detailed explanations of the webtoon because it's fun to compare all the crazy decisions.
Speaking of crazy, I'm going to seem a bit when I say I don't like this part of the webtoon and fully understand why they would change it. Guilt? Imagine if all the hundreds of thousands that have felt guilt would start remembering past lives. So, as silly and simple as it seems I much prefer the magical bell and the promise being the reason.
Also don't like the sister being happy as part of the reason she would finally resolve anything. It was never about the sister, it was about herself, her immaturity and stubbornness, so it was much better to make her reach alone the way to forgive and forget the curse for her own benefit.
vienibenmio
July 25, 2023 at 9:58 AM
@lixie That's fair, you're free to feel about the story however you do! In the comic, though, she specifically wished to remember her first life forever because of her guilt, and her wish was granted. So it was a specific decision she made, not just a byproduct of her guilt.

Your views are similar to mine. In my case, it's Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. In my opinion, there is something very intangibly different about written media compared to visual media. The black ink and white paper are so immersive, perhaps due to their simplicity. There are many instances where I enjoyed reading a manga more than watching its anime adaptation, and bear in mind anime adaptations generally follow their original mangas faithfully. I wonder what the opinion of people who watched the drama first and then read the webtoon later instead? I found myself more forgiving of an adaptation when I did that. I truly enjoyed the adaptations of Howl's Moving Castle and Cheese in the Trap when I watched them. After reading the source materials, I found myself justifying why the changes were made and was more accepting of them.

I saw the movie of Howl first, and it was the first I had ever seen of what I understood was the anime style where a hero like Howl's face was drawn in that very stylised idealised elfin fashion. One thing I found strange about Sophie in the film was that she was a girl who was changed into the appearance of an old woman via a spell, which was supposed to be very significant, but then later in the film seemed to have changed back into a girl again without it being clear why.

I think you make a good point about the format where you first meet the characters shapes how you experience them on the second meeting. I think our imaginations add something to books but with webtoons you see the character and then in drama you live with them in a different way as you see the world they live in. I think you are probably right starting in the big world of drama/film and reducing down to the smaller frames of the webtoon is probably easier.

But at least, we got an end in GoT, I'm still waiting for it for the books 😅

For GoT, the big issue is that they switched from character-based storytelling to goal-based storytelling. That's why it start slow, as the books. And the end feels/is rushed with characters acting out-of-characters to reach the ending point.
I personally will never understand why they did not make two more seasons, to take the need time to develop the story. They could have taken other directors if these two wanted off. The audience would have watched more seasons, and be less aggravated.
I'm also quite weary of adaptations. They just do not unfold as they did in my head.

Deep breath. This is a painful topic right now.
I want to start with a comparison to Howl's Moving Castle. I love the book to pieces and I think Miyazaki's adaptation is stunning. But actually there are only a few key similarities between the two. Yet, it works because the movie takes the essence of the book to make commentary on the relevant issue of the cost of war (in the book the war is barely a footnote) while keeping the best of the Sophie and Howl.
If the changes had served a understandable purpose and if the end product could have stood on its own, I would have been fine with the changes (I think). But, the way See You in My 19th Life was adapted made no sense and felt more like a betrayal of the characters and themes of the original. SHS was wonderful as Ban Ji Eum, who is quite an unusual character in that she has qualities-- like her straightforwardness and extreme confidence--that are more often associated with a male lead. And the remaining cast did well with their characters as well. Truly, the acting from the kids to the main 4 was delightful.
It was the writing and directing choices that disappointed me. The emphasis on angst and overuse of the crash to the point it lost all emotional power. The additional character of HaNa (what?!) and the added consequences of knowing about past lives for Jieum's loved ones (are you kidding me?) served no apparent purpose except for angst for the purpose of angst. I honestly do not know what the writer and production wanted to say here. It was just dreary--beautiful to look at but painful to watch.
The webtoon on the other hand keeps the balance of humor and drama with time spent on relationships between the main four characters. It is witty and thought provoking at the same time. And you just feel GOOD reading it.
I regret what it could have been.
I now know how Cheese in the Trap fans felt. Ugh.

Yes, it was just like they were adding angst for no real reason. I think that even if I hadn't read the webcomic I would have found this drama just way too heavy and tragic.

Also, the webcomic was written in a way that is very cinematic. I would read certain chapters and think "wow, this would be SO good in a live action scene." In fact, the drama even did that for some scenes, like Seo-ha finding Ju-won's story and the carousel. That's why I don't really agree that these changes were necessary because of the move from one medium to the next. The webcomic itself was very cinematic. Like, one reason I'm really mad about the climactic Do-yun/Cho-won scene being changed is because the webcomic version would have made a far better live action scene in terms of the setup and scenery--why would you take a confession scene set in the rain and move it indoors? Especially when the rain is an important theme of their story...

I felt the same way as you waiting for certain of the scenes to be brought to life by actors. The webtoon does have that feel.
On another note, thank you for eloquently championing the webtoon. I have been following your comments since the first recap because you are able to say what I want to say.

Honestly when it comes to webtoon adaptations there's bound to be issues. From what I learnt during my time watching dramas its either they stuck to the webtoon too much (direct print to screen) or didn't stick to it enough(changed/reduced scenes, added stuff etc).
Either way there would still be people raising issues about it so it would boil down to ones personal preference I guess?
For long-term fans of webtoons it might hurt more as the plot we all know and love has been changed and "butchered" into something that takes the meaning out of the story we initially fell in love with and I get it. If they adapted any of the webtoons I love, especially Positively Yours in the future I would rage hard.

I am a firm believer that an adapted work needs to stand on its own merit.
Unless you are the creator/writer, director and producer of the work, those adapting it will want to put their spin and opinion into "their" product.
It does bring up the question whether webtoons are good source material for dramas. Webtoons are story boards of situational events while literary works are long prose, mental picture painting. One could argue that books offer more character development and less leeway than a webtoon adaptation.

I watched The Godfather years before I read the book and that was my first time reading a book a movie was based on. For me, reading the book made me appreciate the movie and when I rewatched the movie, I appreciated the book. I think it's probably really hard for adaptations to strike the right balance of "adapting" and building upon or expanding or reinterpreting on the idea. Especially for the different mediums.
Plus the time constraints.

I'm tempted to watch the drama now that's concluded and I've seen some of the comments. I've read the entire webtoon but I don't remember it as clearly @vienibenmio and my takeway of the webtoon was definitely different than theirs so I'm curious about how I'll intrepret the drama.
