Destined With You: Episodes 1-2
by Unit
Our fantasy rom-com premieres to a decent start with spells, haunted houses, and fake grim reapers. Our cursed leading man is finally on the verge of liberation, but is it really a K-drama if everything goes smoothly between him and his leading lady — the only one who can break his curse? Let’s find out.
EPISODES 1-2
We open on a rainy day in a deserted shaman shrine that doubles as a crime scene. Amidst tools of the shamanic trade and pools of water on the floor, a lady in a raincoat lays flat on her back. A side door creaks open to let out a man dressed in a black suit, and he looms over her. As she gazes at him, she notes the accuracy of dramas in their depiction of grim reapers as “handsome.” Lol. Typical of dying single women in dramaland, she wonders if she’s going to die like that without getting to date someone. And if that’s the case, she better make a date out of drinking tea with the handsome grim reaper. Heh.
Our raincoat lady is none other than our heroine, LEE HONG-JO (Jo Boa), a ninth-grade civil servant whose diligence at work is a contrast to the unbothered attitude of her colleagues. And no, she’s not dying. The creepy shrine business is just another regular day in the life of a hardworking civil servant in Onju city.
For more of the creeps, we’re introduced to the handsome not-a-grim-reaper, who is, in actual fact, our male lead, JANG SHIN-YU (Kim Ro-woon). As a hotshot lawyer in a fancy law firm, Shin-yu is no stranger to attracting attention from the ladies — including a really shy missus who only reveals her bloody hand to him. Red Hand, as she’s fondly and aptly named, is, well, an invisible-to-everyone-else-but-him hand that pops out every now and then in the dark to caress his neck and cheeks. K-dramas! They’ll string us along for weeks without skinship between an OTP, but here we are interlocking fingers with a creepy hand in the first episode. Nice!
Shin-yu’s involuntary romance with Red Hand isn’t the only creepy thing in store for us, and soon, a blood moon occurs. What’s the best thing to do during a blood moon? Why, visit a haunted house, of course! That’s exactly what a vlogger does on a live stream, and his haunted house of choice is the deserted shrine we saw earlier. Unfortunately, one fright leads to another, and in his haste to leave, he trips and lands on a cutter blade in the yard. Yikes! Wait, what’s the genre of this drama again? Slasher horror?
Speaking of horror, Hong-jo gets transferred to the Park Maintenance Team at City Hall where her nemesis in the person of GONG SEO-GOO (Hyun Bong-shik) is waiting for her. When she was still a rookie, Hong-jo erroneously reported Mr. Gong to the audit team after she saw him accept what she didn’t know then was condolence money for his mom’s funeral. Since then, Mr. Gong has had it out for her, and the rest of the team are firmly on his side.
After the vlogger’s death, the citizens petition City Hall to demolish the haunted shrine, but the responsibility is passed around. When the case lands in their department, Hong-jo volunteers to handle it, and Mr. Gong is only too happy to throw her under the bus onto the case.
Hong-jo and her raincoat visit the shrine for inspection, and when she faces a statue in the shrine, she hears a whisper, “What took you so long?” Erm… the rain? She dismisses the whisper as something from her imagination and continues her tour until she spots a shadowy figure in one of the rooms. Frightened, she falls to the floor, and we get a replay of the opening scene with Hong-jo’s grim reaper monologue, and her asking Shin-yu the reaper out for some tea. Heh.
What business does Shin-yu have in the haunted shrine? I’m glad you asked. Apparently, the land belongs to his family, and he was entrusted with the task of taking care of the shrine. Unfortunately, the caretaker he hired did a terrible job of managing the place and now the Poongsan Jang family has a death on the property. Shin-yu’s father, JANG SE-HEON (Lee Pil-mo), is not impressed with the outcome of things, and he tells his son to quit the law firm if he doesn’t have time to take care of the oh-so-very-important-to-our-family shrine.
But the shrine is the least of Shin-yu’s concerns at the moment due to a recent development of tremors in his right hand. He is diagnosed with a chromosome mutation that could lead to right hemiplegia, loss of sense in his hands and feet, and language impairment. And as for treatment options, well, you can’t treat a genetic disorder. Basically, Shin-yu’s got a time bomb in his head that could explode anytime, and he’s advised to be careful of stressful situations.
But stress comes around in the person of Hong-jo (in her quest to demolish the shrine), and she recognizes Shin-yu as the grim reaper she met. Shin-yu would rather restore the shrine than demolish it, and he orders Hong-jo to leave his office unless she wants to go to a tea house with a grim reaper. (But she already did! Duh!)
Hong-jo insists on a demolition because the shrine’s shaman is in a nursing home and there’s no point keeping up the building. And to Shin-yu’s question about why she’s going this far, Hong-jo replies that she is lonely. She wants to properly resolve the shrine issue so that Mr. Gong and the rest of the team will have lunch with her because she doesn’t want to eat alone at home and at work too. Awwww. Shin-yu ends up agreeing to demolish the shrine on the condition that the shaman permits it. He is so sure that she will turn Hong-jo down, but to his surprise, shaman EUN-WOL (Kim Hye-ok) consents to the demolition as well.
Shaman Eun-wol’s reason for siding with Hong-jo is simple: all the pain and curses accompanying Shin-yu’s karma for killing Red Hand (it is implied that he killed her, maybe in a previous life?) will be over soon because the owner of a certain wooden box has shown up. “Who is the owner?” Shin-yu asks, and the shaman replies that it’s the woman he’s thinking of. Hmmm. Shin-yu has another woman on his mind? Red Hand is gonna be so jealous. Lol.
It would seem that the woman in Shin-yu’s thoughts resides only in his thoughts, because the rest of the Park Maintenance Team don’t care, and they go out for dinner to celebrate the demolition without the team member that made it happen. Hong-jo crouches in a corner to cry in disappointment — but not for long, because Shin-yu shows up with the gift of a wooden box that supposedly belonged to her.
Hong-jo is suspicious of the “black mini coffin,” but since the gift is coming from the nice shaman who comforted her in her loneliness, she doesn’t think it’ll be anything weird. Hong-jo even gets a little excited at the thought that the box might contain an antique painting, and Shin-yu is also curious about the contents. But try as she might, Hong-jo cannot open the box. “People won’t open up to me. Even this lock won’t open up to me,” she complains in drunken frustration. But since she knows how painful it is to be abandoned, Hong-jo decides not to throw away the box regardless.
If there’s one person Hong-jo would like to open up to her, it’s KWON JAE-KYUNG (Ha Joon), a policy advisor at City Hall. Hong-jo has a massive crush on Jae-kyung, but she’s sandwiched between over a hundred other ladies who are vying for the attention of City Hall’s perfect visual. You know that Hong-jo has got it real bad when she imagines Jae-kyung (in matching colors!) coming to her aid following an injury she sustains at home. “Please, can you come?” Hong-jo whispers into the void for someone, anyone, to come. And that’s when she hears the lock on the box unlatch.
Meanwhile, Jae-kyung scouts Shin-yu as a lawyer for City Hall, but a lower paycheck aside, Shin-yu is not interested in counseling civil servants and assisting them with lawsuits. However, Jae-kyung gets his attention when he mentions that Shin-yu will get the opportunity to deal with big firms — yunno, those shady ones that do illegal things. And among the big firms, the one that seals the deal is Haum construction.
Haum construction is led by the arrogant LEE HYUN-SEO (Kim Kwon), who’s the biggest client and a shareholder at Shin-yu’s law firm. Shin-yu is ticked off when their boss (cameo by Yoon Kye-sang!) decides to cover up Hyun-seo’s sexual and verbal assault on two of their lawyers, and he eventually quits following Hyun-seo’s expectation for the lawyers to grovel at his feet because he bought them apology gifts. Pfft.
Shin-yu resumes at City Hall and he’s quick to pick up on Hong-jo’s crush on Jae-kyung. But he’s more interested in knowing if she has unlocked the box, and if yes, what it contains. The most important content of the box is a book: Spells of the Heavens. It was penned by a famous ancient shaman, and in it, the shaman writes that only she and the person she chooses (Hong-jo?) can cast the spells in the book. Shin-yu tells Hong-jo that she can have all the other spells because he needs just one spell. He holds off on telling her the spell he needs, but I have no doubt it’ll be something related to breaking the curse of Red Hand.
Joining the City Hall train — well, as a visitor to her mayor dad and as Shin-yu’s fiancée-in-waiting — is YOON NA-YEON (Yura). Na-yeon and Hong-jo just so happened to have had a falling out in high school after Hong-jo “stole” the boy Na-yeon liked. But Na-yeon appears to be an unreliable narrator, and from Hong-jo’s reaction when they meet again in City Hall, there’s more to that story. Hong-jo doesn’t accept Na-yeon’s half-assed apology, and Shin-yu — who should have stayed out of it because it’s none of his damn business — tells Hong-jo that this is why she eats alone. Wow! Look who’s graduated from lawyer to judge.
You’d think that since Shin-yu needs Hong-jo to cast a spell for him, he’ll at least wait to hear from both sides, but no. Man’s firmly on Na-yeon’s side, and he goes further to berate Hong-jo for being the type of person to get excited about the smallest gestures of kindness after overhearing her confess to Jae-kyung (who politely but firmly turns her down). How rude!
Things get to a head when the news spreads around City Hall that Hong-jo confessed to Jae-kyung and got rejected, and Hong-jo becomes the topic of office gossip. Like work isn’t lonely enough. Sigh. What’s a girl in possession of a spell book to do when she has reached the end of her rope? Why, cast a love spell on her crush, of course. While Hong-jo is in the middle of her ritual, Shin-yu is in the middle of the road having a crisis at the steering wheel. And yep, it’s Red Hand, again, and this time, she leads him to crash his car by the side of the road. Welp!
While the story demands that I be intrigued by the curse of Red Hand and how Hong-jo fits into all of this, what really drew me in is Hong-jo herself. It was so easy to sympathize with the lonely civil servant who maintains a cheerful disposition despite the world shutting her out over and over again. On the contrary, I can’t really say the same about Shin-yu. Yes, I know he’s going through stuff, but really, who isn’t? No one says to be overly sympathetic, but the least he could have done was be kind and not throw the vulnerable moment Hong-jo shared with him back in her face. He really struck a nerve with his remark about her eating alone, and I hope she makes him sweat before breaking his curse.
Speaking of which, I am so not looking forward to diving into Shin-yu’s past and the origin of the Red Hand curse because I’ve been burned by a certain recent drama about past lives and shamans. Unfortunately, the past life story is inevitable here, so here’s to crossing my fingers and proceeding with caution.

I’m liking Destined with You so far! Jo Boa is delightful, and Rowoon’s eyebrow game is so on point, I cannot look away from them for even one moment when they are on screen. I’m also loving the vaguely “spy movie” quality to the OST.
That said, I don’t know how this drama is going to progress and I surely don’t know if it’ll betray us or delight us in the end, but one thing I very much do know: Even Rowoon can’t pull off a sleek black suit paired with fluffy, white, house slippers.
PS: During that hilarious video call about opening the box, did anyone else note that the PPL actually missed a feature placement opportunity? I know from plenty of other shows that this Samsung phone can do video while bent in half, which would have meant that our FL did NOT to need to prop her phone up so precariously against that beer can! I actually got distracted by the fact that she didn’t know she could do that. I mean, if I know the phone can do this and would have made her life easier…well, maybe I’ve watched more than 20 k-dramas 🙃
Thanks, @unit, for the weecap!!!

I know... I don't know if this makes sense, but I would start admiring him like art, as in, how does that even make sense as a real face? And then I'd be like, oh yeah - keep paying attention to the plot! This is also only my second drama with him as ML (after Extra-Ordinary You), so it's quite the different character, too! Weirdly, I don't mind that he's a jerk right now... there have been so many truly nice ML characters lately (YAY!) that I almost forgot that this is the "normal" archetype for this type of romance drama. At any rate, I'm having fun!

Yes! And I think that's why a *visual* pairing with most female leads would be hard. They have to make that intangible chemistry work.

... Fighting for my life over here, Rowoon-ssi. Do I want to laugh at you or throw you out a window. Haven't decided yet.
He’s channelling a dozen other actors who do this kind of role and style of acting far, far better, and more effortlessly, and he is trying so hard, so, so hard to be the aloof cynical cursed male lead (🙄) and trying even harder to not be Rowoon, that I can tell he's trying and when he slips up; his acting is so intensely telegraphed, it's not natural at all. He looks like he has to school his face into position before every scene. (It's unnervingly forceful and Not Good. 😂)
On the other hand, this probably why I haven't felt too much like punching him. Yet. (The Smarm is being forcibly suppressed but still manages to peek through at times, like a possessed bloody hand…)
Jo Boah is CUTE, but the writing is clichéd (not in a good way).
I'm also dreading the Love Potion shenanigans. There better be a twist. And like. A good one. *looks through fingers*.

Well, well… well.
I am here for the sensual, gracious, creepy, sexy and ragey bloodied red hands. I hope it’s not a cameo or a guest role.
Also, is Jang lawyer cheating on his GF with red hands?? Who came first?
The first episode was bumpy but I quite enjoyed the second episode. The female lead is a little too cute and naive for my liking but I can get on board with it. I also didn’t know how to react to her wanting to cast a spell on a man who clearly rejected her. It just didn’t feel right. It would have been interesting if she cast a spell to make friends. I get that she is lonely but her colleagues are the last set of people she should try to befriend. They are awful. No amount of redemption will make me forgive them. Of course, they will all become friends. Who am I kidding?
I am curious about this love triangle because there is a history of our FL stealing her friends boy friend. Will it repeat again? Will he fall for her first or she? I am sure this is going to get messy and I am looking forward to it.
I don’t see any chemistry between the leads yet. But it’s better since he is actually taken for now. I want a slow burn romance.

We’ve not even really started working through the intricacies of plot line, IMO.
@hacja started us off recently by citing Rowoon's wooden, groan-inducing acting--or was it his stiff, moan-inducing acting--as fodder for our consideration.
I still can’t help but feel there’s still a joke in there somewhere, but I just can’t quite seem to place my bloody fingers on it…

In general I am pretty put off by any kind of love-spell situation, but it was hard not to see how our FL was tempted in this situation. It definitely doesn’t excuse her, but after her complete shut-out at work, I can at least understand why she felt like she needed to resort to such measures. She also has professed not to believe in any of this stuff, so maybe she’s sort of just doing it because she’s at the end of her rope or for a laugh. That’s always the danger of calling on spirits or spells though - they might actually show up! I have a feeling this whole book is going to get more real than she anticipated.

There were little illustrations in the corners of the spells (sapsali dog, various plants), and some are bound to turn up, right? I’d love to see the sapsali dog! The Love Spell has the red rosebud used in the spell, and the Cure Disease spell shows a trumpet flower vine - it's got to be a callback to Rowoon's character's symbol in Extraordinary You.

At first, when Shin-yu was like, "give me just one spell" I thought it was really weird. Aren't they just instructions? Can't you just use them as many times as you want? But then she started burning the first one and I realized they all must be destructive recipes like that. Tbh I think I'd have a hard time burning pages from an antique book.

Regarding FL stealing Yoon Na-Yeon's ex boyfriend, I think we will find the story has a lot of holes, that there was no boyfriend, but YNY was at fault for their mutual dislike. She did not tell the story in front of the FL, as she would immediately rebuff it. In true drama fashion, it is going to be something really serious, making perfect sense for ML to run.

@unit thanks for the recap! Well well well. I like it!! Not really sure what's up with the ML, but it's working so far! It's fun that he's bitter and weird because of a curse. And the FL is really relatable - I was worried she might be annoying, but she's fun. Being introduced to the concept of the ML and saying "I hate him already," and then that one-person dance party, were moments that made me really like her. I also chuckled throughout the first two eps, which I wasn't expecting. Random observations: I think they have chemistry already. Excellent. And I also appreciate that in their moments of non-antagonism, the drama wasn't pushing the sparkly ✨️romance✨️ vibe immediately. I'm not even going to touch the hand thing, except to wonder - whose hand is that?? Jo Boa's?? Also - is it weird that I fixated on how awesome her couch cushions are???

If done well, enemies to lovers is my favorite because it takes longer for the romance to bloom and other side-stories (side characters, bad guys, etc) can run alongside the main couple story.

But he's far from the total jerk.
He was the one who defends his colleagues and stoop up for them. They got apologies because he asked their boss for it.
He has a good moral and follows his principles.
For the shrine, he was professionnal.
But he was a complete jerk with Hong-Jo about her loneliness.

Can't believe all she needed to do to open the chest was K-pop choreo. Spellbook was up to date with the times 😂
I agree and I'm glad it's not just me who's seeing the chemistry!! I definitely think it's working and very much alive when they're in a scene together - although they've met like four times only, it didn't feel like weird or anything when she was video calling him or invited him up to her house to fix her lightbulb, and I'm going to chalk that down to the chemistry making the dynamic seem more natural.
RE the hand, I think shaman grandma mentioned that the hand belonged to the same person who is the real owner of the chest and I think she said something along the lines of her (Hong-jo) being the 'person you killed'. So I'm waiting for a reveal down the line when we can see the body that hand is attached to and it'll be like a past life version of Hong-jo or something.

See, I get why you’re saying that…but I ended up thinking (well, hoping) that the woman he “killed” (aka Ms. Redhand) was a different person than Hong-jo, in this life or any other.
I’d like it to be that someone, unrelated to Shin-yu in the past, is the one to free him. Like two separate families meeting.
But perhaps I wish too much.

I think in this case, this might be a bit too much to ask for. The promos were very clear about our leads' fated connection in the past and today, so it would be pretty surprising for it to go a different direction. Here it seems pretty integral, and even when it isn't (like in Heartbeat) dramas can't really resist these relationships it seems.

Does Hong-jo mean ‘blush’ or something related to the color red, and is that why Jae-kyung asks if her turning red all the time has to do with her name? It makes it more plausible she’s the owner of the *red* hand, too.
@unaspirated, I agree that it's too much to hope that the FL won't be the reincarnation of Redhand, although I'd much prefer that she is someone else from his past life. I wouldn't be surprised if his past self didn't actually kill her. This feels more 19th Life than Goblin so far.

lapislazulii, Can't believe all she needed to do to open the chest was K-pop choreo". <- That choreo might have recalled her mdl, " some appearances in the music videos..." and was relatable for K-Pop fans, but I don't think it was what opened the lock.
After the choreo, she tried to fix the light, fell, imagined Kwon Jae-Gyeong appearing, and at 23:59, whimpered "Please, can you come?". And then the opening lock was heard.

Ah I think I needed to be in a very different mood while watching this because I didn't find it easy to sympathise with our FL at all. It's like she was designed from a kdrama checklist - hardworking but ostracised by colleagues, parent(s) deceased, beautiful but never been on a date 🙄...
Ditto for the ML. Plus he made me SO mad when he intervened in the conversation between Hong-jo and Na-yeon with zero context! The show got fun for me only when the FL showed some spirit against the ML and also took matters into her own hands with the love potion. It'll backfire for sure but at least it'll be interesting.

For the record, I don't like any of the workers on her team. I don't intend to. No matter how grave she was towards her team leader, how dare they go celebrate a demolition without the person who made it happen.

I was laughing through the first 15 minutes because all the cameos made it look like the show had mashed in everyone who's ever been in a show with any of the leads - a Korean equivalent of “Six Degrees of Separation.”
That online photo of Jae-kyung rejecting Hong-jo - would an item titled “9th-Grade Civil Servant Dumped” really get any clicks? I can’t be the only one who finds this particular flavor of social media humiliation unlikely. I guess we'll find out who took it and how they know what the two were saying; my bet is on the girlfriend.

Jo Boa's FL has better dance moves, interior decorating and wardrobe than a typical Candy, and I like how diligent she is about her work, even if one of her primary motivations is impressing her toxic boss.
However, I'm worried about the love potion plot. Not my cup of tea (or magic) to force someone to "love" you with no regard for their free will, so I hope the writer does something to make this storyline less creepy.
I too find Rowoon's face both mesmerizing and distracting. Can't figure out if it's the symmetry, the lack of pores, the eyebrows or a combination of all three. I'm glad our OTP's relationship is mainly antagonistic for now. It'll be all the more satisfying when the ML has to depend on the FL in a karmic power reversal.

I like Hong-jo and her character and find her very sympathetic, but Shin-yu has my Attention. Such an interesting character! If that was the only thing I liked about the show, that would be enough to make me continue. As it is, I’m totally hooked, so this is just a bonus. He can be such a jerk but then he has these little moments where he subtly softens, like when Hong-jo drops those devastating lines about not having anyone to eat with and getting too excited when someone shows her kindness. I loved that he stood up to that waste-of-space of a client and resigned over the mistreatment [read: assault] of his coworkers. It’s obviously a very privileged thing to be able to do, but it was such a good window onto his values.
His sense of humor totally works for me, like his absolutely deadpan asking his girlfriend to make sure she hangs a flag above the bed and when he asks Hong-jo for taxi fare when they get to her house. His relationship with the curse/bloody hand is so interesting - he talks to it like he might to a needy girlfriend - at once annoyed and intimate and resigned, someone he can’t let go of but who isn’t good for him. I laughed so much when Hong-jo thought he was a grim reaper (what a fun nod to his previous show!) but also I’m not sure I would have made a different assumption in that setting. He looked the part in a big way, and was very cool all in black and lit by the lightning. He’s definitely making some assumptions about Hong-jo because of his girlfriend (it’s a pretty big leap from “she dated the guy I liked” to “she stole my boyfriend”), but I don’t think he can help feeling sympathy even as he’s trying to be contemptuous. And it’s fun to see Rowoon in a role where he’s not the default goofball.
I think this genre might just be my genre. I find fantasy romances so fun, whether they are set in Seoul or Daeho or somewhere in between. The stakes are so high, the OTP is so fated, the circumstances are so tragic, the soundtracks are so epic. I was loving this show from the very beginning, and I’m excited for next week!

Both are "cliché" with the candy girl and the cold guy. But they didn't push the cursor at the max. and there is more depth in their character.
I really like Shin-Yu too. He showed that he listens to her, when she said she was lonely and eat alone at home, he remembered it when they went to her home. His comment about she's happy with any attention she got was very cruel and not welcome in the situation, but it was his observation from what he knows about her and he was right.

I don’t have much to add beyond what was said on the hand wall. Episode 2 was technically an improvement on the first. The two halves (Boah’s PG 13 candyland and Rowoon’s I-don’t-what but certainly more Mature) began to blend together. But somehow #1 was so bizarre it was more interesting. Still, for its long-term prospects it’s probably better they fixed that.
Re Rowoon. He was a little flat but certainly looked model-esque strutting the corridors esp with that scowl. He was gold with the Red Hand. I think he should try his hand at playing a villain, or something kinky. Am I allowed to say that?

Solid premiere, and gorgeous intro sequence! I hadn’t watched the trailers or teasers so putting together what was going on was a TRIP and a half. I was so ready to give episode 1 more leeway in terms of expectations but honestly didn’t even have to TRY to maintain interest/attention, it was set up well to reel me in within the span of a few minutes.
Tonally it was a little bit jarring. But I didn’t hate it, I quite liked it because it kept me on my toes? I jumped a little when that guy fell and sliced his head or something, because right before that we had the standard office rom-com-esque scene of the FL lamenting her work woes - so some dude getting killed Final Destination style immediately after was the last thing I was expecting. And the FL’s troubles being ostracised at work seemed a whole world apart from the red hand of horror that’s tormenting the ML. I think the tonal dissonance is working to keep that uncanny undercurrent alive though - maintaining a taut balance between gothic, fantasy and mundane.
I’m VERY intrigued by Shin-yu. Rowoon is doing great so far, and I’m hoping this role gives him a chance to explore a different range from his usual. I like Jo Bo-ah but Hong-jo isn’t piquing my interest as much, and that’s probably because there’s more of a mysterious and dark aura attached to the ML in comparison to the FL who was mainly just having a tough time at work and now is turning into Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I found myself struggling to proper actualise her character for most of the first episode - she was just a little abstract and I couldn’t find like an emotional grip to latch onto if that makes sense? UNTIL the end of episode 1 when she starts crying, that’s when I felt the first pang of aww and her character started to materialise a bit more in my mind as episode two went along too (does any of this make sense?!).
Also Rowoon has really pretty eyes, aparently I’m only just really noticing now.

While I might find it off-putting in other dramas, it worked for me here to add that otherworldly weirdness feeling. There's so much going on here... The ML's backstory with that red hand is like Rebecca apparently? And now that they're both working at City Hall my gif-making brain wonders if they're Leslie Knope and Ben Wyatt?? hehehe HELLO!! 👋 Glad you're also joining on the journey with this show Hopeful!
Yeah I agree that it might've been off-putting in other dramas - if anything I can think of other dramas where the tonal variety HAS worked to disengaged me. It's actually funny how there's no set rules for what works to make a drama enjoyable - or at least I feel that way for sure. Like sure there's some things - poor writing, poor directing , poor acting etc, and certain writing choices - that lead to dramas being not enjoyable BUT there's many elements that work in some dramas and don't work in other dramas, and I guess it just comes down to the unique variables present in that show and the mood of the viewer!
I LOVE THE PARKS AND REC lightbulb moment!! I didn't think of that at all but now that'll be at the forefront of my mind - I can totally see shades of the Ben & Leslie characterisation and relationship dynamic!

I agree, I was drawn in more by Shin-yu than Hong-jo at this point. But I think that was intentional, as she is supposed to be the “practical” one who doesn’t really believe in curses or anything, so her troubles were more… terrestrial than his. That said, I do find her sympathetic, and I can’t imagine being ostracized to that extent, which also makes me more understanding of her pretty shady choice in a first spell.

Ha, yes, I know, but I thought this one was pretty clear. Also, now that we’re on the subject…I felt that it was quite clear that the bad, bad Red Hand (the hurty one) was attacking our ML because the FL was performing an incantation. So, in that way, I never thought the love spell would be used on Shin-yu. I’d be more expecting him to be immune to it, somehow. I’m not making any logical sense. I’m just shouting out dreams and fantasies to the Kdrama gods right now…

Maybe it was just my muddled brain but yeah I couldn't get a clear picture of what the preview was suggesting, but I hope he is immune to it! On that note, I was actually wondering whether it hurting him = life-force weakening, and therefore when she performs spells it accelerates his condition. Tying in that idea that like you have to borrow energy from somewhere to use it in a spell, so maybe a bit of a give & take scenario here, the more she performs her witchy activities the more he weakens etc etc.

I think the Red Hand Curse was acting up because she was casting also, but I'm not sure what that means for Shin-yu's reaction to the spells. If he is immune to them, it would make "curing" his disease/breaking the curse much more difficult, so maybe that is the route they will go? Seems like it might be too easy otherwise, unless the spell itself is really difficult.

On the surface, as others have mentioned, we have the typical candy, the typical tsundere, another cursed past life. So maybe it wasn't a bad idea they added all these incongruous elements to differentiate it. The trick will be not letting those take over the plot. Ep. 2 might be a good signpost. Let's see.

I'm sorry but the bloody red hand caressing Rowoon out of nowhere takes me out every. single. time.
I hope that this isn't gonna be another case of poor lonely FL gets bullied by everyone and anyone. I'm getting Kokdu flashbacks tbh. Like, ma'am, ik you're lonely and desperate but atp give up being friends with your toxic ass coworkers*
Bro could have just paid her to get the page on curing diseases. Also ik he's a cold, rude jerk who works for the bourgeoisie, but he's fixing your light for free 😭😭 no need to be mean right then. Anyways, I'm interested to see how they go from bickering to a couple, as always.
I already know she never stole the SFL's crush in HS, it's all a misunderstanding 🙄 I'm surprised that she really did report her asshole new boss for fraud or whatever, but still, that old man needs to let it gooo

I thought he was going to pay her for the spell too! Surprised that he just asked her for a favour instead. But I guess he hasn't been established as a 'money is the answer to everything' rich guy, especially since he took on the City Hall job without too much hesitation.

True. He doesn’t pull chaebol stunts and he even dislikes such people.
I also think he is intrigued that ‘she’ is someway an answer to his curse. The shaman did mention that she came back. So he knows. His family has lived with the curse for so long so he has no doubts about what’s happening and believes it all to be real. But he doesn’t know to what extent she will be part of his curse and he can’t just blindly trust her. I see it as a way he is trying to get close to her, to get to understand better.

I like this perspective a lot! I guess it also explains why - although he's been blunt and cold - he didn't demand she open the chest in-front of him, or bring the book to him at work or hand it over completely. For someone who seems quite no-nonsense, he's been treating her more like a human than a means to an end sort of (if that makes sense?) What he says and what he does are at odds sometimes (in a good way) which makes it very interesting!

Yeah, the extent to which he is super-natural is still not well-fleshed-out. I hope the show actually pays attention to this part of his character soon…maybe explaining why everyone in his family looks so young (until they don’t)?

I was also 100% reminded of Kkokdu. I take your point about the sharing of the FL’s piteousness…but is there something more? I sort of hope not, but also hope so. what if this show can do right by some of the more interesting themes of that previous sad-sack of a drama??
I’m not getting my hopes up, but still.

I'll be honest. I have great hopes for this show. Not because of the show itself but because of who is participating in the recap and comments on Dramabeans. (all in top form, may I say!) @unit, @attiton, @elinor, @indyfan, @sicarius, @kafiyah-bello. -sorry I can't include everyone, but it really is an all-star group. This show could be the insightful commentary laugh-fest that Behind your Touch could have been if it wasn't so toxic.
Anyway, I don't have much to contribute given the quality of this commentary lineup, except to say that I'm in a really comparative mood, thanks to an overdose of romantic fantasy. So on another equally intellectual discussion board, I echoed the DB feature "would you rather" and got into a vigorous and profound discussion with @jillofalltrades about whether it would be preferable to be caressed by a bloody hand or grabbed in the butt. She made the important point that harassment is harassment, but I believe I had a good counter argument, that unlike the fondling of the behind, the hand makes its presence known well in advance, and further, contrary to the violence of grabbing, the hand actually strokes the face, albeit causing some veins to bulge and the skin to go translucent.
In any case, I hope we will be seeing more of this breakout star, the bloody hand, throughout this drama. Also, I'm looking forward to the commentary!

It was! And I shouldn't say it, but combine the pain in Ep 2 with the pleasure in Ep 1, we have, ahem, a name for that. 😂
