Destined With You: Episodes 9-10

The second half of our show kicks off with some much needed progress on the romance front. *Throws confetti* An unexpected sinister alliance is revealed, we get an insight into our OTP’s past lives, and a familiar character returns.

EPISODES 9-10

We resume the week with Hong-jo creeping away from the shadowy figure at the festival location. Thankfully, the lights come back on and she bumps into Jae-kyung. What is he doing here? He came to check on the location as well. Hong-jo and I are suspicious of his sudden appearance, but okay, I’ll buy his excuse. What I don’t buy is Shin-yu suddenly collapsing in his parking lot and Na-yeon being the one to find him. I mean, last we knew, Shin-yu went to confront Garden Man. What happened at the greenhouse? And why has Shin-yu been unconscious for two whole days?

Naturally, Hong-jo is worried about not being able to reach Shin-yu. She waits on pins and needles for him to text back — and her disappointment is palpable when Jae-kyung’s text comes in instead. Lol.

The first thing Shin-yu does when he wakes up is to look for his phone, and he’s pleased to see Hong-jo’s worried messages. Dude doesn’t even want to get discharged so that she can keep worrying about him. Pfft. I guess he’s all better now — aside from the generational illness and the threat of the curse doll hanging on his head.

Worried about the curse doll, Hong-jo goes through the black magic spell book and stumbles on a Love Destruction spell. Its ingredients and recipe catch her eye: a straw doll dressed with the clothes of a beloved person, a black cloth covering the head of the doll, and the pierced name tag of the person to be cursed. It’s clear that whoever placed the curse doll in the mountains is familiar with this particular spell. But how?

After learning of Na-yeon’s affair last week, I didn’t think any other alliance of hers could surprise me. But surprise, surprise, she is in cahoots with Garden Man! How did they even link up? Was it before or after Hong-jo told her about the love spell thingy? Or has she always been in the know that Garden Man was the anonymous sender of the pictures?

Despite Na-yeon’s superiority complex, Garden Man reiterates that he is not her lackey. So, do you want an award for Mastermind Creep of the Year? Na-yeon hands over Shin-yu’s clothes to Garden Man to proceed with the next stage of their evil plans, and he promises to bring it on. “Compared to romance or drama, a thriller’s more exciting,” he says. And is that the writer borrowing his voice to tell us about the genre of the second half of the show?

The fireworks festival is finally declared open, but in the crowd of people, our OTP can only see each other. (That height difference though!) Shin-yu was supposed to go on a post-recovery trip, but Hong-jo called to stop him — she’s the one reaching out first this time. The truth is, you can only stop a person who is willing to be stopped. And since Hong-jo has made the first move, it’s Shin-yu’s turn to make a move. “It doesn’t matter whether the spells work or not. I love you,” he says, after pulling her into a hug, and I couldn’t help but smile because Shin-yu has finally escaped from the Dungeon of Denial.

Turns out that escape is not a new concept when it comes to Shin-yu, because we get transported from the festival to our OTP’s previous life in Joseon, where Joseon Shin-yu tells Joseon Hong-jo to run away with him. It’s giving off star-crossed lovers vibes.

We back up further to see a younger Shin-yu, the young master of an aristocratic family, collapsed in the Field of Despair after his mother’s death. Hong-jo, a commoner — who seems to have shamanic powers — comforted him with the knowledge of his mother’s last letter to him. And afterwards, they became friends despite their status difference.

Our Joseon OTP parted ways when Shin-yu left to write the state exam — and Hong-jo had an unsettling vision of him holding someone, and the person’s bloody hand reaching out to his face, but she kept mum about it. They met again after his coming-of-age ceremony, and with adult Shin-yu looking so gat-damn handsome, we soon see that Joseon Hong-jo and modern-day Hong-jo both suffer from the uncontrollable blushing syndrome. Then again, I dare any lady to not blush after receiving a forehead kiss and some chaste lip action from Shin-yu. (By the way, his neck really went through a lot for the duration of that kiss). Lol.

We return to the current timeline, where our OTP suffers from post-confession awkwardness. Shin-yu tells Hong-jo to wait for him to come to her pure and wholly — that is, without the girlfriend/fiancée baggage — and Hong-jo agrees to wait. Then they go all mushy with the “Go home,” and “You, go first,” nonsense. *Rolls eyes* Are you two in a competition to see who catches a cold first?

Shin-yu tells shaman Eun-wol about his recovery of the past life’s memory, and how he thinks he loved Hong-jo back then, too. But what is past is past, and Eun-wol advises him to focus on this life and make sure he has no regrets.

Having no regrets starts from Shin-yu making a clean break with Na-yeon — who would rather “turn a blind eye to his affairs” than accept that it’s over between them. Pfft. Sis is obsessed with the idea of Shin-yu as a trophy husband, but it no longer matters. Shin-yu is done, done, and this time, it’s final.

Now that he’s free of Na-yeon, Shin-yu shows up at Hong-jo’s house with flowers, and I’m 100% onboard their ship now. But before I could begin to cast an anti-iceberg spell for the ship, Jae-kyung barges out of the gate to snatch the flowers and demand that Hong-jo come to him. That disrespectful punk! Honestly, the audacity of K-drama second leads needs to be studied. But joke’s on me because the flowers, and the battle to split Hong-jo into two was all in her head. LMAO! I can’t believe I got so worked up for nothing. The imagination of K-drama female leads… you know what, just forget it.

But despite breaking up with Na-yeon, Shin-yu doesn’t make things official with Hong-jo. In fact, he gives her so much of a painfully professional distance, that she gets confused and upset. In the end, Hong-jo consults Jae-kyung for dating advice, and Jae-kyung uses the opportunity to confess his feelings to her. “Don’t get shaken up by Shin-yu. Come to me.” Lol. Can’t blame him, though. The man saw his chance and took it, albeit late.

Na-yeon, on the other hand, can’t take chances with just Garden Man’s shamanistic ritual. For two-factor authentication, she asks daddy dearest to transfer Hong-jo out of City Hall, and the responsibility falls on Jae-kyung’s lap. “Because you didn’t behave properly, [Hong-jo] is the one being accused,” Jae-kyung roars at Shin-yu, and Shin-yu says he’ll deal with the situation. How? By wrist-grabbing Hong-jo and dragging her out under the watchful eyes of all of City Hall.

Our OTP’s destination is the beach, and there, Shin-yu tells Hong-jo that Na-yeon made him promise to keep their breakup a secret until her project at City Hall is over. He accepted to do so because it was only recently that people at work found out about him and Na-yeon, and he didn’t want them to judge Hong-jo for dating him almost immediately. “I wanted a peaceful start even if it meant we had to start late,” he says. But it doesn’t matter anymore because he’s going to side with Hong-jo openly now.

To do that, Shin-yu needs to know how Hong-jo feels, and she replies that she feels strange. “Somehow, it feels like I’ve been caring about you for a very long time,” she says, and he tells her that she’s right. They cared for each other though she probably doesn’t remember. Awwwwn. Look at them hugging and kissing at the same beach where they once pledged to go against their destinies. Cute. (But how is it that the hottest kiss they’ve had so far is the one from his hungover imagination two weeks ago?)

Everything is all sweet and romantic until Hong-jo lovingly reaches for Shin-yu’s cheeks. And like a phoenix from the ashes, Red Hand makes her long-awaited reappearance, and this is where we wrap up for the week!

Ms. Red is back, people! She really said ain’t no other woman coming for my precious cheeks. Territorial much? LMAO! I suppose it’s time for her to return since we have begun to delve into the story of Shin-yu and Hong-jo’s past life. But everything about that life screams tragedy and horror — from our OTP’s plans to run away, to Hong-jo’s vision, and the suspicious dumping of a body at the shaman’s shrine. *Shudders*

Whether in the past or present, our OTP’s love story is fraught with challenges of all sorts. But that’s why side couples exist — to ease the anxiety and frustration we get from watching the OTP surmount their obstacles. And for Destined With You, Mr. Gong and Eun-young have become our official side couple, and there goes my hope for a platonic friendship between them. Welp!

I'm really loving the reincarnation aspects of the drama. Honestly, I could watch reincarnated lovers who were star-crossed in a previous life find each other again over and over. I don't care if it's basically the same story over and over again, lol. I am curious how past life Hong-jo's death relates to past life Shin-yu. I also REALLY love past Hong-jo's personality, she is delightful.

I'm glad that Shin-yu broke up with Na-yeon, but also don't know why he didn't just tell Hong-jo sooner that they had agreed not to reveal it at work. Communication, people! And why was Hong-jo so upset that he went to pick up Na-yeon when 1) she was the one who called 2) rival or not, it's pretty much common decency for him to pick her up if she's that drunk? Also, the beach was pretty, but not sure why he had to go there to say it other than that it was cinematic. Someone on Reddit mentioned how they just imagined Shin-yu and Hong-jo driving to the beach in complete awkward silence and I laughed so hard.

I wish that Na-yeon wasn't being soo black and white evil. She has a chaebol who's super into her, why is she so hung up on Shin-yu? Is this related to the past life?

The red hand keeps caressing Shin-yu - I wonder if that's meant to be more romantic than sinister? Like, would you seductively caress the face of the man that killed you?

Finally, I LOVE the OST for this show. I can't stop listening to part 7.

According to JTBC, Ms. Red Hand causes Shin-yu "excruciating pain" so I don't believe she's in a romantic mood. 😊

Btw, I'm seriously doubting that past!SY indeed brutally killed past!HJ the way it was written in chronicles. Him betraying her/indirectly leading to her death? Yes, absolutely. But personally dismembering the woman he wanted to elope with? He didn't seem like the type. Was it another member of his clan then - daddy dearest maybe?

I love & will never get tired of reincarnation and star crossed lovers tropes too! I'm glad we're got a decent amount of insight into their past life this week & that Shin-yu was the one to remember it 😍

I saw that reddit comment about the drive too and had a laugh! I didn't even consider that till it was pointed out 😆

And agreed, OST is fantastic!

I want funny Rowoon back! These episodes were a disappointment for me. Between Garden Man's creepy laugh, Eun-Young telling Seo-Goo not to ask for a hug (so, don't be respectful?), Shin-Yu's demanding Hong-Jo come to his office and her complying, and general bad writing, acting and directing, I'm close to dropping. Sigh.

You said it. I just felt/feel exasperated for the same reasons. Why can’t the writers not fcuk up? How hard is it? It must be as this is a viral infection common to so many dramas.

For me, a fan, the older couple represents a generational foil for the younger folks. It’s comedic insofar as they are “representing” expected attitudes while clearly not really believing in them…I would love to see these two to fall truly in love by the end, perhaps even outstripping our OTP in saccharine-sweet delight.

I didn’t mind that aspect. It is just the absence of humour and the wrist grabs et al which got on my nerves.

I mean, I’m here with all the benefit of the doubt. I felt that the wrist grab was played for OTT humor. It was so lame, it wrapped around to self-aware humor.

But, as is clear, I’m giving way more benefit of the doubt than most.

I started this with so much of hope! And first four or so episodes were fun watch but we are going the way of one of the worse FL, ML and SFL. The only (relative) saving grace is SML character. But I find even him disappointing when in spite of the stalking incident for FL, he remained passive.

I am wondering whether the generational curse was placed by Hongjo’s Joseon predecessor who had shamanic powers out of grief and betrayal?
The ostensibly random connection between the gardening creep and Nayeon might also have a past life connection?

And, given the height difference, kissing scenes don’t quite work standing up. So awkward and no doubt uncomfortable for poor Rowoon. Let them be seated and then get down to it.

There is this lovely habit some very tall people have in SK (and maybe in other parts of Asia as well) where they shorten their height by splaying their legs when interacting with much shorter people, eg make us artists, etc.

5

I put a couple of screenshots on my fanwall to demonstrate.

3

Don't say that!!! You can kiss in spite of height difference! (Guess who is more than a head shorter than her partner)

Not to start any SERIOUS discussion here - that would be hella weird lol - but he delivered a much better kiss than one time when he wasn't crouching himself till near-injury point to reach those lips and sat comfortably instead. Technically we could also blame this huge performance difference on him being no brakes drunk at the time, but I feel like a more relaxing position wouldn't hurt anyway. After all, height difference is hardly an issue when in horizontal, trust a common wisdom for that!

@gikata In all seriousness, have you SEEN how serious I’ve been about this show recently on the Fan Wall? I’m ready to get quite serious.

I’m not quite sure how talking about an 11” height difference could ever so qualify though. People are people, ya know? Sometimes physics gets in the way!

3

@attiton , you mean that giant JK defending essay? Can't relate, man's still deep down in negative in my books, to borrow HAPPINESS' FL way to judge people.

Oh, trust me, I of all people know! Dated a guy 13cm taller than me once... gosh, what a freaking pain in the neck it was! Never again, that's for sure. But if fate still decides to troll me into kissing guys as tall as RW, watch me unironically bringing the chair to do that. HJ should try just that btw, bet it's gonna fuel their relationship progress significantly!

5

@gikata your chair comment reminds me of the Netflix film 'Tall Girl' where the ML literally carried a milk crate around for ages so that he could use it when he eventually got a chance to kiss the FL 😆

5

@lapislazulii , oh! Inspirational optimism))) Did he get lucky in the end? Reminds me of one of my favorite fictional heroes - woman he fell for was like 1.5 heads taller than him, so during the grand proposal scene (she was the one proposing lmao - he tried first before and that was a disaster worthy of wildest makjangs out there... long story) he had to stand on some bench to, ahem, convey his approval properly))) I still rooted for the other girl tho - the one that was TWICE his height, a ship doomed since the get-go. But that was worth it, if only for all the ladder jokes...

2

I'm a couple of days late on this, but I'm forced to comment, given that I'm the same height as Rowoon, and my wife is the same height as Jo Bo-ah. Believe me, there is NO SUFFERING INVOLVED!

Good to hear. I once knew a couple who had like 42cm of height difference... can't recall them ever complaining about it, but surely looked complicated logistics-wise.

It just occurred to me that we never saw SY and NY kissing - did they? I may have FFed that, but something tells me they didn't on screen. So perhaps our hero is simply not that skilled at it yet? Damn, show's writers don't go easy on poor guy's ego at all - not only his fiancee is cheating on him since he doesn't satisfy her needs, now his kissing game is also questioned)))

4
6
reply

Required fields are marked *

Nope. No SY-NY kissing. Na-yeon’s even said he doesn’t like to hold her hand…

2

@attiton Or anything else hers for that matter lol. Saw people theorizing that they never were properly intimate together at all, but I feel like this is pushing it a bit too far)))

P.S. Will they EVER tell us what HJ was doing all night in his apartment when he got drunk and how our boy ended up naked back then? No? Dammit!

4

@gikata Well, I don't know what "properly" intimate actually means--folks can be pretty inventive--but the fact tthat she's willing to state outright that she's not satisfied, though, implies that whatever they may be doing, it isn't inventive enough :)

Whatever their sexual relationship may be, I think it's clear that he's never been very interested in her, even as an interlocutor, throughout the drama. The cynical side of me says they're doing that to make him seem just-slightly-less-than-a-total-asshole for not leading her on or something. Feh. It's a shame we don't know more about why they started dating--although you and I have relatively strong inferential evidence that it was because their families threw them together.

If you go back and listen to all the crap that Na-yeon spews at Hong-jo before she passes out in that restaurant, it's all pretty depressing, frankly. She states all the things she wishes were happening, but are not. Hong-jo sees through it, sort of, as do we, but I really do feel for Na-yeon.

In the same way that @cecilieDK pointed out a few episodes back that if Shin-yu couldn't be sure that Hong-jo reciprocated his feelings, by "siding with her openly," he'd be jumping off a cliff, facing the possibility of being left completely alone without a single human being on his side--Na-yeon will have only Construction Chaebol if this thing with Shin-yu falls apart...and something tells me he's not enough either. She's facing having to construct another entire future for herself. I could see why that would make a person clingy.

3

@attiton Guess I was too vague here - people (on MDL specifically) has been speculating for quite a while that SY never bedded NY, or is even a total virgin altogether. Which I find pretty ridiculous given his, well, stats in general and the way he and their relationship are portrayed in the show in particular. But yeah, it's clear he's not into her at all neither emotionally nor physically, and likely never was. She also isn't welcome in his living space (he moved places without telling her and made his displeasure with her sudden visit and attempts to mark the territory with her own/couple stuff very clear), while with HJ he stressed repeatedly that she knows and remembers the password to his door... In fact, he's so like that funny grandma from MULAN animation: "Pls stay for dinner, and preferably for life too!")))

You're probably right about why that was direction chosen by writer for his character, but I wouldn't call it that untrue to life - many people, esp in his social circle, live with people they have little to no interest in. That's Joseon all over again, and we all know what it led to last time...

I don't really care about NY's personal happiness - as her side boy rightly said, she has all the resources to life a much happier and fulfilling life, so that's entirely on her that she prefers to be miserable pining over a man who has more passion for a ghostly severed bloody hand than herself.

3

@gikata Ha, well, FWIW, I thought you were totally clear the first time.

...that's entirely on her that she prefers to be miserable pining over a man who has more passion for a ghostly severed bloody hand than herself.

I think, as well, that you're overstating the case here when you suggest she has the personal power to do whatever she likes in terms of creating her own relationships.

Just sticking to the confines of this drama (rather than making a statement about SK in the "real world"), I very much doubt that such is the case. Her job is dependent on her family connections, not her skills. Her livelihood is not really about her as a person--it's about her as a pawn in a system. She has to behave to get along, and this life with Shin-yu constitutes "behaving," and is acceptable enough for her. Once this relationship over (and it very much looks like it is)...who knows who will be foisted on her next.

I strongly push back on this being largely her responsibility. She's not without any power, but she's not the one in charge here.

1

@attiton Possible, but we've yet to see any strong indicator that her father forces her into this marriage as strongly as SY's father does to him. I've been under impression that it's more about SY's overall status (plus looks) than him or his family personally, so while she likely IS somewhat restricted by societal expectations in terms of who she can and cannot date, I find it hard to believe that if she had just ditched SY the whole crowd of guys not much worse than him wouldn't immediately show up to fill the empty spot. Her current boy toy may not be quite up there with his shady business and scandalous reputation (but her dad doesn't seem to mind much - wonder if their recent "collab" is the guy's long term plan to smoothly replace SY as preferred son-in-law), but let's not act as these two are the last promising bachelors left in SK))) Unless plot 100% proves me otherwise I'll stand on the opinion that she could've done better than ANY of them if she really put an effort to try. If we're not excusing SY for being hesitant to break their relationship and follow his heart, his clan's possible dismay over such mesalliance notwithstanding, why should we excuse her? She's not even dying from terminal brain illness/curse, as far as I'm concerned, and has significantly more time to find a way around any possible obstacles to her own happiness!

2

Oh my god yes about that kissing scenes lol! That scene at the beach felt like his back was breaking into two lol

Rowoon's back and neck must be going through it honestly - I'm so here for more seated kisses, especially if it means more passion and less chaste hehehe

I also think there's going to be a reveal that Na-yeon and gardening creep will have a past life link too, esp. because he can do black magic it looks like. I love your theory about where Shin-yu's family curse might've come from, I hadn't though of that angle but it would make a lot of sense!! 🤯

4

There are a lot of similare scenes between the 2 shows (the elevator scene, his head on her shoulder, when he helped her with the flower).
I think the PD of Sunbae was more imaginative to make their romantic scenes. There was the kiss on stairs, on the stone thing, sit down on the bed. Their hugs were differen too.

In this one, we got the same hug at each time.

5

Park Eun-bin did just that with Rowoon in Yeonmo/The Kings Affection

A romantic way to equalize the heights would be to have her standing on a stair above him. (Or they can sit next to each other, but that's already a makeout sesh.) But for that to happen, the writers have to create a relationship of enthusiastic consent. As long as she suspects she's breaking up his relationship with someone else, that can't happen.

Where to respond to the tall boy-short girl kissing quandry? It seems to be the show’s one dilemma that Beanies are most excited about. 😂

As a fellow shorty, I have a tip. Beaches generally slope down. So the taller partner has stand closer to the water, and the shorter higher up on the sand. Now that won’t help that much with a height difference as dramatic as these two (and wouldn’t allow their profiles to be beautifully framed by the sunset). But it might help the rest of us IRL. Happy pain-free kissing all.

I mean, just for argument’s sake, he’s only five inches taller than me, so, yeah, just saying. No props necessary.

It’s actually one of my favorite experiences—to wear actual real high heels when I know I’m gonna be around tall folks, because then I get to be their height (it’s crazy up there) and also not feel weird, like I’m some sort of tall blade of grass in a well-cut field.

6

@hacja I think it's more on the PD and the fact they were kinda first kiss scenes, so the FL didn't move at all.

It was more natural in The King's Affection and Park Eun-Bin is very small too :p

3

So if Hongjo’s past shamanic self cursed Shinyu’s family, was his mother’s terminal illness just “by chance”? 🤔 Considering how we “know” the curse only affects the male members of the family, it might be the case, however… IDK!!!

Ps: too late to the height difference party, but appreciate all posts about it here wholeheartedly 😂 I wish she would bring a bucket or something to stand on. In the first episodes, they had her wear plateaus with block heels, obviously to mitigate the effect, but they would have to be *so much higher* 😆

I believe past!SY's mother died of some unnamed contagious illness, no? That's why she refused to meet him on her deathbed so he won't risk getting infected. Since we're talking about Joseon it could've been anything really - during eras before antibiotics and total vaccination so many things were highly lethal, it's insane. And she died at least a decade or so prior to whatever tragedy that left his family cursed happened.

🤔 Makes sense! I thought it could also be a possibility that „in ye olde times“ (not 1990s), the family didn’t fully understand the (possibly ancient) curse yet, and might have thought it a contagious disease - when in fact, it wasn’t. But the victim being the mother speaks against it… 🤷‍♀️ Potentially „just a random deadly illness“, like you said.
Yep, we are very lucky to have advanced medical care options today! 😐

I continue to adore this drama. I continue to be fundamentally engaged and in love with how messed up every single person is.

I find that I (still) have a wish list (though):

1. Please, Show, be more descriptive for us about how messed up Na-yeon is. She’s a real woman who knows what does and does not satisfy her. Why? How? Tell us.
2. Please, Show, make Ha-jong more than just a lollipop-sweet foil for everyone else in the show. Tell us more, at least, about her mom and her dad.
3. Please, Show, while I'm at it, tell me more about Jae-kyung's family…the one that he so desperately wishes he loves...but he somehow can't. It makes him feel worthless. 왜?
4. Please, Show, make Garden Show guy just the *worst* but make his marriage really _real_. I want to both empathize with him, and dislike him…at the same time.

I want all the feelz, Show. So far, you’re delivering.

Thanks and Sincerely Yours,

Seon-ha

I do! But WHO WOULD THEY BE OF…??

Do the Beanies wanna vote?

Does Seon-ha have a rooftop apartment filled with pillows, embroideries, paintings, cardboard cutouts and other relic-like paraphernalia (ie, half-drunk water bottles) from/of:

A) Rowoon (Shin-Yu)
B) Ha Joon (Jae-kyung)
C) Jo Boa (Hong-jo)
D) Ahn Sang-wu (Garden Dude)

5

My vote: No garden dude and add Manager Ma?

2

@attiton Oh they have to be Ha Joon and Jo Boah. Then you can act out an alternative ending and have them doing kissy-kissy, smooch-smooch. 😀

7

@attiton LOL! Oh yes, pick Ha Joon. As per dramaland rules, Rowoon will then end up being flung into your apartment, blindfolded.

4

@sonai OMG GALAXY BRAIN. This was thinking like 10 steps ahead for me.

How can I ever repay you for making that image show up in my imagination????

1

@attiton Anytime! Just know that I’m wriggling my eyebrows in a very unsubtle way right now. 🤣

3. Please, Show, while I'm at it, tell me more about Jae-kyung's family…the one that he so desperately wishes he loves...but he somehow can't. It makes him feel worthless.

At this point, Jae-kyung is the only character that still interests me. I don't believe his role is simply Second Male Lead Who Loses girl. But, I had a different view of his family - maybe I need to go back and watch that scene.

The JTBC website explains that his father ruined his relationship with his first love - but I want to see it on my TV screen (because Ha Joon is my favorite. Rowoon who???).

My wild theory? His dad is the creepy gardener and his first love was Na Yeon. If so, that would help explain why he isn't being wasted in SML role and why Ne Yeon knows creepy gardener.

His dad is the creepy gardener?! Nope! Nope!! Nope!!! They better not ruin Ha Joon for me cause that's where my rioting might start from.

Emotions aside, logic now front and center, I don't think Creepy Gardener is his dad. We learn somewhere in episode 1-3 that Jae-kyung previously lived in a condo. For him to afford that lifestyle, I'm guessing he's also a chaebol like Sin-yu. I just don't know if he's as much as a chaebol as Sin-yu.

His first love had better not be Na-yeon. Na-yeon is from a wealthy home and I don't see her being not considered as a potential daughter-in-law. I'm guessing his first love is of the same social class as Hong-joo. Which I'm guessing is what prompted him to give Hong-joo that response he have her at the end of episode 1. He doesn't want her to pass through what his first love passed through in the hands of his family.

And as per the condo and why he's currently living in a downtown neighborhood... if he's a chaebol, I'm guessing they forced him to move out of the place, perhaps it's one of the condo apartments his family owns.

I hope the writers are looking at what's here cause I don't want any nonsensical drama surrounding my beloved Jae-kyung. I know he won't get Hong-joo. I'll enjoy the ride to my eventual heartbreak nonetheless. But please writernim 🙏🏽, chebal 🙏🏽, don't ruin Jae-kyung for me.

Well, I will repeat what I said earlier - Jae Kyung is the only character that interests me because we don't know that much about him and I'm convinced he was part of their past lives. Plus, I came to this drama because of Ha Joon - so you and I are simpatico in our hopes. Up until Episode 10, I thought his role was to protect her. But now we have "plant" connection to creepy gardener. Also, he is not wealthy. From the JTBC site:

He dreamed of politics and could have held a key position in a central ministry, but he knows that his family will hold him back.
He has an alcoholic father and is the eldest son of a family of dogs, but he looks like he grew up in a well-to-do family.

"I'm not interested in love, romance, or marriage at all. There was a woman I once loved, and I dreamed of getting married for a while.
When she [s/b "he", I believe] found out that [his] father had been constantly borrowing money from her, [he]closed [his] heart.. . .
I didn't want to have the woman I loved involved with my family again.

I love that you can read Hangeul and understand. Do you know why ‘a family of dogs’ would be used in this context?

I’m so jealous you can read these character descriptions! On IMDb, we’re lucky to get the actor/actress’ name spelled correctly, let alone such a comprehensive description!

2

Ah! You got offered a translation! I had to use Google Translate. Thanks for sharing the link!

1

Jerry, I mean, does it matter…but Jae-kyung actually gives direct reasons why he left that condo. He couldn’t see the seasons, he didn’t see his life passing by, he couldn’t have a garden.

The reason he chose the place he chose—and I still fully believe he didn’t know Hong-Jo was there—because of the windows and the view of the outdoors.

He’s a cloistered boy. Chaebol indeed.

I've been expecting his dad to be in debt and that he's doing that kdrama thing of the child paying the debt of a deadbeat parent and that dad coming back for more money (like the FL's grifter mom in My Lovely Liar). I think he sold the expensive condo to either pay off that debt or to run away from his dad. He probably didn't want to admit his family business to Hong-jo so told her he wanted a change in scenery.

4

But not all condos are chaebol only residences. On the other hand, penthouses most def would be.

@dncingemma, in reply to your earlier comment, I cannot read Hangul - the page automatically translates for me (I believe it's because when I first visited a few weeks ago, it asked if I wanted it to auto-translate). My impression is that his "family" is a problem, whatever that means. I need to locate that scene with Hong Joo when he talks about his "family".

3

Rest easy @jerrykuvira, I dug deep into the JTBC web site and Creepy Gardener is too young (41 years old) to be JK's father. So, I give up on that direct connection (but there be an indirect one because Jae Kyung was working on those pots on HJ's patio the same way Creepy was).

However, Creepy is connected to someone in the drama and we will probably find out when assistant attorney looks into the business license for the Greenway landscaping company. The fact that he is practically an employee of City Hall leads once again to Na-yeon's family.

Let me add my two cents here which might not be persuasive to a lawyer like you but Hongjo is not aloof but unsure of herself. She is competent and professional but not arrogant and self-assured. She feels alone in the world and is navigating the world with hesitation and trepidation. However, she is a klutz, can be funny and kind. To me, this aggregation of traits seems much more charming than Nayeon anyday of the week.

his next set of action is a result of him believing love potion is real..it’s a chemical reaction in brain as shaman said spells work for people who believe it..

My theory is SML also knows his prev life..that’s why he is suddenly interested in her…

Shin-yu has been fighting his attraction towards Hong-Ju the entire time he’s known her. He’s himself is confused why he likes her and he feels guilty that his reaction to Hong-ju is so much stronger than anything he’s felt for Na-Yeon in the 2 years he’s been dating her. So I doubt he’s had time or the emotional bandwidth to logically list out the reasons he likes her.
But to me the show shows how these two could have grown closer, learned about each other and called in love slowly without even realizing.
Shin-yu and Hong-ju met when they were both at a pretty low point. Hong-ju was lonely in a workplace that she was ostracized in and her landlady who was like a family had also moved away. Shin-yu was also at a low point dealing with a health diagnosis, bickering parents, family curse, toxic work environment, and a relationship in which he wasn’t happy.
They met in unusual circumstances that forced them to be honest with each other and share their deepest worries at the time. We see Hong-Ju share with Shin-Yu that she’s lonely and just wants to fit in at work (so he can let her do the demolition and get brownie points) and we see him share with her that he has an illness (do she would use the spell to cure him). They also don’t pretend to be alright or cute with each other. The love spell mix up forces them to spend more time with each other as well and you can see them get closer and more comfortable. The stalker/black magic issues once again are things that they face together cos it involves both of them. So in some ways there are events and opportunities for Shin-yu to see Hong-Ju be competent, be silly, be temperamental, be nice but still not perfect (her need to please people and need for acceptance). Hong-ju also gets to see Shin-yu be competent, protective, and loving (however reluctantly). So I see them slowly starting to care for each other. The past life stuff is just the excuse that Shin-yu needed to stop fighting his attraction and affection for Hong-Ju. Him using the word “love” might seem premature but it might be a reflection of how strong his feelings for Hong-Ju are. I noticed that she still used the word “care” rather than “love” which makes sense to me cos they and particularly she are in that phase. He’s explains why he uses the word “love” when he drunkenly talks about how he does not normally do or feel the things he does/feel when it comes to Hong-Ju so it makes sense to me to why he says he loves her.
Essentially, the above is my long rambling way of how the show showed me how Shin-Yu and Hong-Ju fell in love and why they are where they are. Not everyone would agree with it but this is what I get from looking at the show.

So I understand what you are saying, but your first sentence to me is what I don't buy. When was he fighting his attraction to her since he has known her. Honestly, maybe it is just me, but the show didn't show him fighting that attraction, for me it was just an abrupt I like her. In Crash Landing on You, there is an after scene where Hyun Bin's character sees Son Ye Jin's character dangling from the tree and smiles, even though he is relatively stoic to her the first few episodes. This is showing me he has interest. Meanwhile in Destined with You, we have Rowoon suddenly claiming, after literally leaving her in a decrepit old haunted house that he likes her after a spell. WHY? So this is my thought process, lol, but thank you for your lovely post and explanation for how you see why he likes her.😊

4

Not at all rambling, I really enjoyed reading this!

2

Nice writeup! Agree X 10000

I think he first sees her with interest when she says she does not want to feel like an outcast. Fellow feeling, cause he has always felt isolated cause of his illness? Realizing others have problems too? Something there.
He also gives her the workplace bullying helpline, haha!
Of course, you get all this only if you watch each episode x 😁

4

@kasumi this is a wonderful piece, I agree with what you are saying. They slowly get to know each other by spending time together, and they like what they see.
@kafiyah-bello hopefully this acts as the drama "showing" us why SY likes HJ.
Shin Yu sees how hardworking Hong Jo is
1. When he talks about how her colleagues only have 2 lines of task and she has 7. Here he made it a point to seek out he org chart to find out why it seems like she is the only one in her department.
2. When the doctor is explaining neural coupling and the flashback shows him noticing her literally getting her hands dirty on the job while placing the flowers, not just leaving it to others to do. Here he actually stops walking and looks at her, sees what she is doing.

5

I was thinking the same thing tonight. What exactly is it that suddenly both office hunks like HJ AND are actively pursuing her? I hate it when the feelings just suddenly start with no explanation, rhyme or reason. In fact, JK was unbelievably cold to HJ when he rejected her in ep #1. It’s frustrating as h*ll when writers expect us to just accept it.

But he already had feelings for her at this moment. He just reacted like always with the sollicitations he had to get by other women at work.

But it looked like he regretted pretty much immediately and not just because it was made public.

1

I actually see why 2ML likes her. After he rejected her. The rejection was shown to all and he felt badly about it. Then they moved in together and he saw her outside of a a work setting and got to like her at that point.

4

I agree with Kafiyah Bello that JK caught feelings around when they became neighbors. Prior to that, he did admire her hardworking attitude and complimented it on the work message board. He was only cold to her during her confession because he had some hangup about his dad that led him to be determined not to date. He wanted to cut off all hope.

2

I enjoyed this show through the earlier episodes, but for the past couple of weeks the writing has gone in circles. He says he loves her, but he never really cleanly breaks up with Na-Yeon. I understand the rationale for not revealing the breakup at work, but it was humiliating to Hong-jo. That's not how you treat someone you love! If I knew Hong-jo in real life, I would tell her to run away from Shin-yu. The side stories aren't all that interesting, and I find myself FFing a lot. Why can't anyone write a decent romance drama anymore?

12

I can't help but see things from Hong-jo's perspective and from an outsider's perspective. This story works because Hong-jo has no close friends telling her that Shin-yu appears like a large red flag and that she wouldn't be the first mistress whose man has disappointed her by not leaving his gf/wife.

I get that Shin-yu assumes that Nayeon is collateral damage to his feelings and probably feels bad and therefore promises her to hold off on the breakup news, but I was disappointed he didn't tell Hong-jo until the shit hit the fan. And why was he making promises to preserve Nayeon's reputation and prevent the distraction of a breakup from messing with her work projects and then not caring about Hong-jo's reputation and how these rumors can mess with Hong-jo's job too? I have the terrible feeling that Shin-yu could end up like his dad.

It's a drama, so ofc he won't end up like his dad, but otherwise... yeah. Btw it kinda bothers me that he's so passive and dgaf about the terrible way dad treats the mom. I get that it's probably a deeply internalized thing he witnessed all his life and got used to early on, but damn, you're not a helpless baby anymore, say something at least!

Come to think of it, SY NEVER talks back when his family is involved, right? Huh, I'm starting to see why NY chose to latch onto him of all people - and succeeded at not letting go for so long.

First of all, kudos to your wonderful recap…it’s so funny, lol at two factor authentication!

I liked many things in these 9/10 episodes, the prev life is so beautiful…the leads are now officially together..the music is a chef kiss..

My frustration is why my poor leads can’t live in peace, there is always something or another…as soon as they start their relationship, the hand came…I loved the hand and so excited but at same time thinking why HongJo, you should have caressed that cheek after giving a passionate kiss..

I would have been also less frustrated if the director told us about the promise before…I was as mad as HongJo about SY not pushing away when eating..

That office phone call…what I can say…there is lot of push and pull, I loved that scene so much…

The horse running through season, wow what an amazing way..but I was like why is Rowoons dress has some mud on it….

There are so much to solve, I am not sure 6 eps are enough,,,honestly I rather see prev life more than the side characters…I was so mad that they used a background ost for them…asking for a hug is not unmanly!

But looking at JBA in black hair, the leads chemistry, the kiss and scenery..I forgot all my frustrations and the ending scene is making me wish it was Wednesday already!

So many things to write ! That I will probably forget 3/4 of them 😅

The creepy gardener : The shaman said another person than Shin-Yu remembers his/her past life, so I guess it's him and not Hong-Jo yet. He knows how doing black magic. He's clearly the one who went to Na-Yeon to use her against Shin-Yu. The fact Shin-Yu discovered about the doll but doesn't seem to remember showed that Na-Yeon didn't find him on the parking lot...

Their past life : I wonder why they brought Hong-Jo to the shaman like she was dead... Her vision with the red hand doesn't look good for them. They're cute growing up together and falling in love with each other. But their love will be tragedic.

It was quite frustrating to see Shin-Yu dating Na-Yeon for so long. If I had some hopes when she explained to him her past with Hong-Jo, thinking she won't be completely a bad girl... She crushed them. She's just bad...

Shin-Yu was pretty cold with everybody at the beginning, but he seemed nicer with Na-Yeon. So I wouldn't have been against him ditching her coldy, but I liked the fact he knew he never was a good boyfriend because he never loved her. So he accepted to protect her ego, knowing she's a spoiled daughter with a big one.

He could protect Hong-Jo just by talking with her about it. She should stopped answering her phone when Na-Yeon calls.

But I can't help to adore every of their scenes. Their bickering, flirting, disputes are so fun to watch.

I hope now that Hong-Jo will be more proactive in their relationship. When she tried, the red hand appeared. Damn timing! It could wait a little bit.

Shaman Eun Wol said: "Finally, there is another person who remembers their past life". It's unclear if she is talking about herself (being the 1st person) or a 3rd person.

If there is a 3rd, I think it's Jae-kyung. When Hong-jo said "Please, can you come?" she was thinking of Jae-kung and the box opened.

i thought it was Shin-yu (who showed up at City Hall a couple of days later), but now I'm leaning to Jae-kyung. He absolutely is part of the past - I'm crossing my fingers that he exists to do good, not evil but writers are having fun with us.

That chair push was definitely a nod to Secretary Kim and I am convinced the red hand belongs to past life Hong Jo. Shin Yu is swoony but I really really wished they didn’t drag the eventual break up between him and Na Yeon. I don’t know what this delay is achieving.

I still have zero feelings about our 2ML. He is just a screen filler for me. However I am enjoying him in Live Your own Life.

I think they should have done much better to explain and depict the roots of her loneliness but being bullied at school and her father dying when she didn’t want to go to school seem inexorably linked to her discomfort in being in the world without loved ones. I find her sympathetic because it happens to people in RL who find they don’t belong in the world but some find effective ways of coping to lessen that pain. They are strong even if vulnerable to all that pain and sorrow they have felt. She is one of these people.

Also, presumably psychic pain is likely to follow you throughout your lives so if she was betrayed, mistreated, became alienated and grief-stricken in her previous life, all of these might have left strong imprints on her soul.
