Well done, My Dearest.

You are now the highest rated drama for MBC. May MBC take a leave on this update, and learn that it pays to produce heavy-laden and epic saeguks/historical dramas, instead of light or fluffy ones.

Congrats, My Dearest! 12.2% with ten episodes to go, it could get 20% by the finale.

My only hypothesis for the slight climb in ratings for THE REAL HAS COME is that it is nearing its end and people are simply curious.

BEHIND YOUR TOUCH (My wife calls it "Behind Your Tush") proves that there is demand for a show that has an element of the ridiculous.

Big congratulations to My Dearest. It was a race well done. And a huge break for MBC after cough cough.

Longing for You is defying all odds and I love it.

Touch Your Hiney 1.5% jump🤭🤭🤭. My favs are doing wonders.

Waiting for My dearest to complete to binge watch. Hearing only good things about the drama. But have to wait for that 1 month gap too😞.
Destined with you - Low-key interested in this. Waiting to see how it is taken to completion.

MY DEAREST is either going to soar even higher (if they fix the plot mess during Part2's first week) or gonna crash and burn hard. Nor sure why this dramatic gamble was even needed in the first place, but hopefully makers know what they're doing - for everyone's sake.

Yeah, I wonder if the break will affect the drama, especially after leaving us with that ending. It was a bold move by MBC.

I did read comments by enraged Korean viewers on YouTube, and apparently Namgoong Min had to take to Instagram to explain that the main characters will be back.

In theory I get what they tried to pull here, but practically I feel like they overdid it.

Not surprised, I've seen tons of people everywhere genuinely asking whether we'll have a new FL in Part2. Which is absolutely WILD and not in a good way... It's unfortunate that cast is always thrown under the bus in such situations when it's obviously the writer that viewers are angry at. Kdrama writers really need to learn a thing or two about owning up to their "creative decisions"...

Right, we get it, but instead of eagerly anticipating Part 2, some or most of us are left frustrated and questioning whether to continue watching after a month-long break.

I would pay really good money to see the 16-episode drama about two, strong mercenary fighters falling in love that was set up by the last scene of Part 1. It could even have strange Crash Landing on You vibes...I’d watch!

**ducks any incoming barbs like those fleeing Lee Chung-ah’s arrows**

2

That's CHUNO without the girl.

Sounds good for another drama.

3

CHUNO without THAT girl would've been amazing, where can I sign up for it?

3

We all know what happened with new (old ? original ?) FL in Alchemy of Souls 2. Love Go Youn Jung but the Naksu of AoS 1 was definitely missing in action in AoS 2.

At least she was still technically the same soul (? I didn't watch the drama) in that show, but here they really made it look like all previous 10 episodes were for nothing after both leads started anew with completely new partners. Did someone joke about swinger party sageuk already?

1

@Gikata

"swinger party sageuk"

Lol ... very apt.

0

Exactly what I thought when I saw the very last scene. Some viewers actually believe there's a new FL.
Viewers who hate Gil-chae after episode 10 and hope for a new love interest for Jang-hyun will quickly be disappointed. Others may not turn on at all.

I wonder if the blow of Part1 finale would still be this painful if writer didn't stretch the miscommunication between leads so much and instead kept them in "not yet together" phase for more logical reasons. Or tweaked a bit circumstances behind GC's engagement to make it a desperate move like with Scarlett's pre-Rhett marriages. Just sayin'.

Considering it's Joseon, it would be 2 failed engagements if they are going that route.

3

That sucks--no actor should have to answer for the creative choices of other people.

I would also say that I wonder if this reaction to the mid-point ending has made anyone re-think the real ending, which I suspect is at least equally sad, tragic, and frustrating, if not moreso.

Doubly insulting is the fact that when drama does well, writers rarely miss the chance to bask in the spotlight. But once there's a controversy...

I didn't have much hopes for a happy ending anyway, but I thought we'd get a beautiful tragedy at least, not a frustrating mess.

+1
"frustrating mess"
Also very good observation K-drama writers (more than any other in the world) do love the spotlight but as we have seen time and again wash their hands off at even a hint of controversy.

1

They should pay for one month of therapy with that ending if they want us to return for part 2.

I've dropped the saga few books in after realizing I couldn't care even one bit about what happens to all that terrible people and their crapsack world in general. Show was even worse, I barely lasted two eps of Season1))) My sympathies to all the fans though, looks like author has no interest left in ever finishing his magnum opus...

2

Tough to be GoT fans ... initially the novel readers could claim to have an upper hand over the show fans ... by the end both sets of fans were left disappointed ... was this the bittersweet ending GRRM kept harping about ... never-ending wait for the novels.

Do hope both GWTW and My Dearest fans get a ending they are not totally disappointed with ... franky I do give a ...

2

I was actually totally fine with the ending of part 1 (ducks and hides). Of course that may be because I have very little tolerance for "fated romances" where both parties are expected to be flawlessly pure and virginal and where love with a capital "L" is expected to take precedence over every other life consideration.

But that's not what people are unhappy with tho? Personally I couldn't care less about FL's "purity" (and it's stated that ML is nowhere near "innocent and inexperienced" either). It's Joseon's law TOTALLY prohibiting women to be married more than once, effectively dooming OTP's romance mid-story. Had it been a different era where widows and divorcees could've had a second chance, we'd just sit back and calmly waited for Mr Thirdwheel to step aside one way or another. But after the show stressed so much how women still legally "belong" forever to their husbands even after said husbands die/abandon them? Meaning there is NO WAY for leads to be together properly after she marries someone else. So what are the remaining 10 episodes gonna be about then and why should we still care?

Given that the show so far has been explicitly built around showing the horrors of Joseon laws and norms around female chastity and remarriage, I fully expect the second half to focus on that. But I also feel that it can't really show the awfulness of those norms without allowing its characters to reckon with them (and possibly ultimately break them and deal with the fallout of that). I think that's a much more interesting show than one that says that these norms are bad, but has its leads adhere to them anyway and end up as a traditional married couple.

Thing is, vast majority of viewers aren't gonna tune in for 10 hour+ long episodes of hopeless torturous angst for the sake of social commentary. It's a fictional romance made primary for ENTERTAINMENT, not a hardcore documentary why life in Joseon era sucked. We've already discussed in WWWW thread that OTP getting together without marriage (to each other) - aka having an affair - will only lead to a terrible backlash and plummeting ratings, not a revolutionary take on a typical kdrama love story. It's like ML trying to talk FL into "casual sexsome" with him early on - no one believed for a moment that the show would actually go there, and unsurprisingly to anyone it didn't. I feel like you're expecting way too much true to life depth from this drama...

3

I guess I'm in the weird minority of viewers who is far more interested in the social commentary than a happy romantic ending. There are lots of traditional romances out there, but I find this show interesting precisely because it seems to be doing something different. Again, I have no idea how this will actually play out in part 2, but I'd personally prefer something subversive even it it's tragic, to something that forces the characters into traditional gender stereotypes and roles for the sake of a "happy" ending.

5

Thanks for the reminder.. I watch K-dramas for entertainment ...I have my life for hopeless torturous angst and world history for social commentary. Sigh!

There's only one way to go for Min Namgoong and it isn't down!

I'm pretty sure that no matter the outcome his career won't be affected much negatively - man's gotten nothing but praises since Ep1, and rightfully so. But if I was him I'd be VERY salty that my hard earned potential -nth award nomination(s) is now up in the air because writer decided to mess up with the plot AND also somehow expects ME to shield HER from the heat.

I don't think he is or should be worried about his award potential--he's a lock no matter what at this point--but I would totally understand if he got salty about having to deal with hysterical fans who want reassurance that the story will be worth watching when he's not the one who wrote it.

The only issue I see here is that dramas with higher ratings have more chances to be awarded, actors awards included... but you're right, it's MBC of all things - he and MD crew won't have much competition anyway lol.

3

The audience loves him and he basically brought mbc back to the A-game. Why should he be blamed for the Asian Games and writer's mistake? He has done the impossible for them

I remember being kind of shocked when I saw a Dunkin Donuts franchise in Incheon International Airport in SBS’s WHERE STARS LAND/FOX BRIDE STAR (2018) (Viki US). I grew up close to where DD started in Massachusetts and thought, wow, this local coffee and donuts operation is now world wide.

5

@marcusnyc20 DD is in probably every department store in my country. And there are a lot of department stores in my country. That’s how famous and global it’s become. Here it’s famous for donuts, though, not coffee. In fact, I don’t think anyone orders coffee at DDs here.

2

@marcusnyc20 The first time I had a layover at Incheon I was so happy to see Dunkin Donuts because we didn't have one in LA. At least it was legitimately at the airport

SBS’s THE KILLING VOTE has found its audience at around 4 percent. That should hold for the rest of its run.
A couple of thoughts. This is one of two dramas I am live watching where the ML is totally inhabiting his character with Park Hae-jin nailing it in THE KILLING VOTE and Lee Sang-yeob nailing it in KBS’s MY LOVELY BOXER which may be one of those dramas like KBS’s HEARTBEAT that just doesn’t/didn’t resonate with the SK viewing public.
My only other Park Hae-jin drama is the great BAD GUYS (2014) which I watched back in 2016 and that had a Nielsen nationwide average rating of 3.083 percent. Go figure.
