Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (November 18, 2023)

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

missvictrix

Currently covering: Perfect Marriage Revenge

A Good Day to Be a Dog: I want to enjoy this drama more than I am. I loveeee the colors and tone so much — and the premise — but the school bullying was too dark for me, and I’m having trouble getting emotionally involved in the story or the romance at all. But I sure love Yul.

mistyisles

Currently covering: Strong Girl Nam-soon, Vigilante

Castaway Diva: Something about this show just gets me right in the feels every single episode! While I never really doubted which brother was Ki-ho, I’ve also enjoyed the suspense of how and when it would finally be revealed to *someone* at least. But now that we know for sure, I’m ready for Mok-ha to find out so the two of them can have an actual, emotional reunion.

Twinkling Watermelon: I have mixed feelings about this show as a whole (especially pertaining to the time travel machinations, the altered timeline, and Eun-yoo as a character). Most of all, I wish we could have spent more time after the accident watching Chung-ah help Yi-chan navigate his hearing loss, because I thought that would turn out to be a huge part of why Eun-gyeol needed to help them meet sooner. But I cried throughout the entire final episode, and my parting feelings are overwhelmingly fond. Yi-chan may very well be my favorite K-drama character of the year: his character growth was just beautiful, and by the end of it, getting to know him in the past didn’t just give Eun-gyeol a new perspective on present-day Yi-chan — it changed my understanding of him, too.

LIVE WATCHES
Perfect Marriage Revenge
Is there another show on right now other than PMR?

The Matchmakers
Oh, right, yes, there is…this thing of absolute beauty!!!

My Dearest (skimming for the OTP)
Almost done...fingers crossed for a happy ending (to the recap comment section). Emotions will surely be high.

LYOL (skimming for the gifs)
And what gifs they have been! My Ha Joon problem continues unabated.

FROM THE RESERVES
W
Some people have less time over their holidays to watch dramas because “family,” but I get more (because “family”). I bet I’ll finish this by the end of the week.

ON DECK
In making my end-of-year list of dramas for @eazal’s game and also Bean counting, I note that there are still quite a few more intriguing live-watches coming in 2023! Between marriage contracts, weird period action dramas, rom-coms with Ajumma in them, demon shows...I wonder if any of them will be any good!?

I also learned that, since joining Dramabeans this past May, I have dramatically slowed (see what I did there?) my per-year drama completion rate by around 40%...probably because I’m spending more time typing and not watching (duh). It’s certainly not because I’m spending more time working 😝! But I wouldn’t ever want to go back to how I was before without you folks!!!

It’s great to see that the watchlist completion rate has lost out to DB fan wall gif explosion, and the initiation of The Unexpected Endings Support Group. We have all benefitted from your presence in the community. We are all hoping together that we can continue to find decent watches as the beanie year end events are fast approaching.

COMPLETED
Twinkling Watermelon - Cried with Yi-chan in the hospital scenes. Yes there were inconsistencies and unanswered questions but I'll forgive the show because it stayed warm and lovely till the end.

ONGOING
My Dearest Part 2 - The Crown Prince and Princess really deserved better. As for our leads, can't believe we really got the amnesia trope 😑.

Strong Girl Nam-soon - Laughed out loud at Hee-sik's giant parka penguin waddle. Rest was meh.

Perfect Marriage Revenge - This is how you do flirty banter. Do-guk is a gem in more ways than one 😜.

Castaway Diva - Didn't feel like pressing play. Maybe this weekend…

The Matchmakers - Really liked this week's episodes. All our couples are adorable in their own way. It's nice to see how Soon-deok is changing Jung-woo's views.

A Good Day to Be a Dog - So tired of the same bullying stories in high school dramas. And next week we get more evil blasts-from-the-past. I think Hae-na's situation is complicated enough without the need for all this drama. Anyway, Yul is still the most precious bean.

Vigilante - The last scene confrontation was the highlight this week. Jo-heon became much more interesting when he decided to frame the crimes on the worst 'candidate'.

Moon in the Day - I'm actually quite invested in the Silla couple now. I'm glad she knows he's a ghost.

WATCHLIST
Looking forward to the contract relationship two-fer that we'll get with The Story of Park's Marriage Contract and My Demon.

C-DRAMAS
Only for Love - Nothing in the FL's behaviour makes sense and I am just as confused as the ML at this point 😅.

Love is Panacea - It's laughable how bad all medical professionals are in this show. At least it ends today.

Wonderland of Love - The tone is a bit too light-hearted for a drama that's essentially all about a war 🤔 but I'm enjoying the leads one-upping each other back and forth.

Story of Kunning Palace - I'm 8 episodes behind so this is basically me with the internet 🙈🙉.

Rising With the Wind - Didn't get time this week. It ends tomorrow so this will be first on my binge-complete list.

Hmm he's actually not had much to do except be the 'Badass Cop' so far. Jo-heon is his character and it was only in the final minutes of this week when it sort of came alive - in his confrontation with the ML and his plan for the 'vigilante'.

Watching:
Perfect Marriage Revenge: last week was SPICY in more ways than one. What will this week bring? Can't wait to see!! 10 out of 10; no notes.

Twinkling Watermelon: (through ep 5) It's so sentimental, but it's so completely earnest and genuine about it, and I love that!! After recently seeing him as a villain in Mad Dog, it's nice seeing Choi Won-young as a good dad. Thankfully, I like Ryeoun more here than I did in Secret Romantic Guesthouse, and Choi Hyun-wook is as good as everyone says - he's effervescently excellent. All of the heart, the magic, the sincerity, the tears and laughter - this is what drew me to K-dramas in the first place. It has touched my heart and grabbed me. I love the soundtrack, too - it's perfect!

C-dramas
-- I started Ancient Love Poetry, and the visuals are really impressive. Things move slowly, but it's kind of relaxing. I LOL'd when the ice-cold ML smiled slightly and the other heavenly gods were like "WHOA, never seen such PASSION, what goddess prompted such a display of emotion??" 🙃 Hopefully he'll get more expressive...

-- I'm past ep 36 of Joy of Life! I already knew about some of the spoilers, but WOW, the reveals in ep 29 were just so satisfying. What a cool concept. Things are heating up! So many epic action scenes in eps 30-35. I love the cast and continue to be delighted at how many people were in both this and in Sword Snow Stride (which is still my fave of the two...) Getting excited for JOL season 2!!

Yes, Twinkling Watermelon is exactly the kind of show that drew me to kdramas in the first place. I will take messy with tons of heart any day over cold, cynical perfection. Also, I agree that the concept of Joy of Life is really cool, and a fun way to get around Mainland China's time travel ban.

I'm with you 100% Wonhwa - messy with tons of heart is so much more satisfying than cold perfection!!!!! Lol the only problem with JOL is that now I won't be able to find anything as cool and unique as that - until season 2, at least! 😂

CASTAWAY DIVA (E. 5-6) Regret, lies and time line confusion. The show is still steering off course with more emphasis on the business ethics corrupt crime elements than how Mok-Ha became the person she is today. Instead of premise of a castaway trying to integrate back in society, we are getting basic story lines of a pyscho dad, an identity theft family secret, stereotypical evil CEO and down-in-the-dumps artist comeback story. We only get short island flashbacks to “show” how business savvy Mok-Ha is from her island experiences. (Maybe MBA programs should include trapping wild boar.) I do not find the Eun Morae rivalry that compelling unless she unlikely turns on the CEO. As I mentioned in earlier posts, Ran-Joo gets a wake-up call from her doctor - - - her lack of singing is in her head not her vocal cords. I guess a real Ran-Joo comeback is in order with Ran Joo deciding whether to keep her fame or to betray (let go)/crush Mok-Ha and her dreams.

GOOD DAY TO BE A DOG (Ep 5-6): It seems all the side stories are just here to put off Hae-Na’s dog kiss curse confession to Seo-Won. The bully story rapped up very quickly and too perfect. Why did our amateur detective crew think night kiss caper number two would work? Awkward suspense repeats itself. The field trip was not as exciting or eventful since Hae-Na and Seo-Won were not together during the critical time.

The only clarity this week is that Hae-Na has changed majors from History to Math. Now has cotton candy has replaced the yellow umbrella? The show still is pedal to the metal cute but is that enough? The only real interesting thing this week was the introduction of the Teen Shaman. She immediately counter-balances Bo-Gyeom’s aura of darkness.

Happy thanksgiving to US beanies and others who celebrate. Looking forward to new dramas coming up end of the month.

Perfect Marriage Revenge : This show is everything! It gives me all the feels 💙💙💙, including pants trauma feels 😱. Loving every bit of it. And as Dorakta pointed out, it’s Swoon Hoon indeed! It is such a wholesome entertainer. I keep rewatching scenes. Now that the marriage is done I wonder how the revenge will continue to play out since Yu Ra has other plans than just mope about for losing the man. I hope our leads become so happily in love that it ends up being their biggest revenge.
And then we have the time travel! Please show give us a good ending.
Can’t wait for today’s episodes.
Also show, please don’t stop the kissing scenes. We need morrreeee!

Five Enough :
When you need more Swoon Hoon, you travel back in time. A 54 ep long weekender!

Sung Hoon is so adorable as a guy with some inflated self importance. And how cute is Shin Hye Sun! I like the main leads enough. I quite like Im Soo Young in this role. Sang Min (Sung Hoon) and Yun Tae (SHS) are a hoot! The number of times he had told her his name and yet she did not remember when her parents asked about. His face 😂😂😂. And then came the man in love and his attempt at confession. Priceless!!
I like the high school friends/girls together too. There is a bit of friction but Im Soo Young somehow makes this character earnest and likeable even though I can see why they have their issues.
I watched the first two episodes in it’s entirely and now i am completely FF-ing the restaurant parents scene, the movie director brother arc and some scenes with the kids. I probably will skip the Ex husband arc too once it’s resolved. The in laws parents are weirdly funny.

So yeah. This seems like a wholesome weekender(?) and can see why it’s loved by so many beanies!

Sung Hoon looks like a baby! 😅. No chest puffing yet!!

Fast we go on trust(cdrama): The show started off great. I loved racing part, the leads, the nerdy FL and understanding ML. It was a joy to see them get closer slowly and work together as a team. They almost could have nailed it. BUT. The show just faltered towards the end. After ep 17 it started dragging and we had extended angst, some form of noble idiocy which made no sense to me and a twist/trauma again with a lot of crying. They just killed all the chemistry the leads had. It just became a FF watch. I just FF-ed a lot and finished the drama. I was so exhausted towards the end I didn’t even care for the 10 sec kiss in the last 10 min of the drama.
Well, I earned my bean.

Seon-ha is so respectful I approve of her. Here on DB it’s the first come first serve basis. If you like someone, claim them fast! 😅
For example, Eazal has claimed her 6 2PM members as her husbands in her harem. It’s ok because I think they are quite old. I have no interest in them. 🤣

CASTAWAY DIVA (Ep. 5-6)
What’s the word for a serial killer who’s bad at the killing part??
An attempted serial killer??
Anyway hate the psycho dad plot but enjoying the rest, this is my KING THE LAND

A GOOD DAY TO BE A DOG (Ep. 5-6)
Could do without the false sexual assault accusation storyline *sigh*
Still, for the most part it remains cute and that’s all I care about

PERFECT MARRIAGE REVENGE (Ep. 5-6)
To be honest I was starting to lose interest and then *ahem* a certain scene happened and my perv self couldn’t be happier 😉

DAILY DOSE OF SUNSHINE
Is it still a love triangle if the FL has no idea she is being pursued by two guys??
Aside from that, I enjoyed the show and was pleasantly surprised when Da-eun and Yu-chan remained good friends, especially considering how kdramas rarely depict platonic friendships between men and women

The Matchmakers: This drama is a little slow. I feel like not much happens while a lot is happening. It is losing me through most of it because the things the show has revealed to the audience, the show’s characters don’t notice. For example, the fact that Jung Woo gets a tummy ache or heart ache anytime he sees love, we are almost halfway through, and not only does he not see it, but neither does Soon Deok. It is a little tedious to watch her match up the women, when they have already been matched up by the writers. Also, it is obvious her brother recognizes her, the hiding is just kind of dumb. However, I don’t dislike it enough to stop watching, I just wish they would pick up the pace.

Twinkling Watermelon: All is well that ends well. It was a sweet drama with some fantastic moments and excellent chemistry. There are many questions left unanswered, chief of which is as @peridot asked how much time has passed that Eun Yu’s hair is longer. So many questions, but I did like that everyone was together and happy again.

Moon in the Day: This drama isn’t great, but I still like it. I couldn’t tell you why. Maybe it is the seriousness that the actors seem to be taking it, although the drama is nonsensical and silly. I like it and I am enjoying it.

A good Day to be a dog: Our leads are adorable. I love how Hae Na made sure Seo Won knew she wasn’t into Bo Gyeom anymore. There communication is great, absent the turning into a dog thing. I really believe it would be easier if she just told him, but I guess we wouldn’t have a drama then. Thank God for the angel that is Yul. He comes through every time.

Vigilante: So, Jo Heon knows it is Ji Yong. There are now copycats. Gang-Ok has just murdered 2 people and is gleefully running around trying to protect Ji Yong. I am not really sure why anything is happening in this drama. Stuff is just happening to happen. Hmmm

The Killing Vote: So, season 2? With a new psycho. Ji Hoon dying made me cry though, I really wanted that boy to win. Also Him and Min were so ADORABLE.

My Dearest: We are at the end. Although we’ve come to the end of the road, I just can let you go, it is natural, you need to and I need you to end (In my Boyz II Men voice). I’m ready for the tragedy and end to come. It is time.

Perfect Marriage Revenge: This drama on the other hand, I do not want to end. Won’t you stay with me because you are all need(in my Sam Smith voice) I don’t have much to say because it has all been said in the greatest of fanwall chats and the recaps.

Castaway Diva: So now we obviously know who Ki Ho obviously was. His reaction makes sense to me. He probably started the beach cleanups in hope of her survival. When his brother saw her first he froze. They have been hiding so long and he still wants her to have her dream, so he quietly helps her, while doing his best to protect his family. I can’t wait for the romance to commence, we are at the halfway mark, It is time(in my Mufasa voice).

The Matchmakers

It is a little tedious to watch her match up the women, when they have already been matched up by the writers.

Yea, It is ridiculous that Seon Deok prides herself as the best matchmaker, but isn't aware about the love that is already wafting in the air, but this also confirms that Rowoon's character is the agent of love.

CRICKET - World cup final is up

As expected - New Zealand in semifinal and asusual losing the semifinal.
Australia - i semifinal and winning the semifinal 8 out of 9 times - woah - winning final 5 times - woah.
India - at home so and is in superb form so big challenge for Australia - but as it goes in world cup you expect Australia to be in finals -

South Africa - had one of the biggest opportunities and they let it go one more time -

I was looking for either Kiwis or Safas winning the cup.

Record number of audience - record concurrent stream and views but it could have huge if they had managed the whole event well.

They gonna put money in T20 world cup and and at that time there is no Big elections too.

KOREA - best job in d world be a kdrma writer - no effort free money n u can also sell goodies to autographs to figures to anything later to lunatic fandom. business is business

UEE - hv 2 earn sympathy brownie points - writer is awesome - 7 weeks of scam where story is still d same.

KIng's Time - i don't prefer this type of content b/c mostly this type of dramas are soap opera nonsense - You expect atleast something out of Chinese n Japanese but korean ones are total soup. Still, 2023 - change - so i watched all -

So we hv 3 - Matchmaking 4/10 - demands lot of flattery and juggling - none going here - slow - below avg - still better than most of 2023.
The low quality 4/10 - bad direction one - generic story that has far more value in king's time than in present day. Still pretty low quality flow.
King's time - 4.5/10 this one is rarest of the rarest good 1st 5 minutes, then next 5 minutes of typical mumble jumble - from events this one has value and actually is god - the king guy always does this n looks handsome - mother need to start her own cosmetics brand - Simple n looks good overall.

Nam 3/10 - the usual trash - what else u expect

Other is typical family antics drama with spoon of romance. All other dramas are typical garbage.

CHINA - Rising With the Wind - 4.5/10 - always liked d guy and story here does go phony a lot bu still can digest it somehow.

Live Watches
The Killing Vote: However many months later and here I am a bit heartbroken. Pretty much the one character I wanted to have a good end (I was picturing him in jail, but doing okay, sorta like Kidnapping Day) decidedly did not have a good end. I am having fun guessing who started the vote back up again at the end though.

The Matchmakers: I was not expecting to love this as much as I do, but I’m eagerly anticipating new episodes next week. Mama Maeng just might prove to be the most talented matchmaker in this show, and I am here for it. Also, if they ever decide to make that story Hwa-rok is writing about the inspector and the assassin into a drama, I would 100% watch it.

A Good Day to be a Dog: Yul is pretty much my favorite character, as usual. Glad we got to see Bo-gyeom’s claws come out! He was such a weird and interesting part of the webtoon and I’m glad he’s weird and interesting here too. Our leads are great, and I love that Seo-won is starting to feel better around “Cocoa”, though I die of secondhand embarrassment whenever he says anything about her to that student!

Castaway Diva: I continue to love this. VERY interested to see how this live show is going to play out. I feel like the only person not taking a risk here is Bo-geol because no matter what happens between the three divas, it is sure to be dramatic and therefore excellent television.

K-action Movie of the Week
The Man from Nowhere: This was so fun! I’d never seen Won Bin in anything and only know about him because he became really successful and then peaced out, so it was fun to see what all the hype was about. And I think he delivered! The first time you get to see his character in action and he whips the knife out of the other guy’s hand so fast? I was hooked! The only thing I found a little disappointing was that we didn’t get that many scenes with him and the little girl. But I guess I should just go rewatch Kidnapping Day to get my fix there.

THE KILLING VOTE’s episode 12 was one of the strangest final episodes that I can recall. It is not in the class of the many crash landing endings I have endured but more of a head scratcher.
I will have to watch it again. In a HEARTBEAT(ish) way, like you, the one character I wanted to survive and live a satisfying life, doesn’t.
The highlight of the whole drama for me was Park Hae-jin’s performance as Detective Kim Moo-chan. 5 stars. It was like the part was written for him. Also Park Sung-woong as the Professor for me gave the best performance since his performance in OCN’sLIFE ON MARS (2018).
I was hoping that there could be a spin off so that the character of Detectives Kim Moo-chan might continue.
I really don’t want to continue in a THE KILLING VOTE 2.

I totally agree. All the sweet/sad moments were with Ji-hoon, but all the hold-your-breath moments involved Mu-chan, who was exceptional throughout. And I think his best moments happened (mostly) across from Seok-joo - they were so electric together.

Mine, too!

I watched another one of his films, Mother, where he takes on a role that’s about as different as you could possibly imagine: a cognitively-impaired man accused of the horrific murder of a young girl. While he gives an excellent performance, Kim Hye-Ja totally owns the film. She plays his fiercely protective mother, who goes in search of the real killer. A warning to the faint-of-heart: the movie is dark, violent, and disturbing.

Live Your Own Life
The family abuse of Hyoshim reached such levels that if nothing changes soon then I'm afraid that even Ha Joon's jumps over the table for his ttoekbokki date can't save this show.

Dog Day
A soothing cotton candy watch (and I think it's clear where Haena's heart is right now)... though this week we did venture into some bullying... and the dark side of Mr. History.

Perfect Marriage Revenge
Still perfect entertainment, with flying watch and clothes here and there.
I will welcome soon episode 7... with open arms like our awesome MIL. Just need to find the right dress. 😁

Watermelon
It was youthful (and chaotic 😁 ) and with a lot of heart... as our main protagonists. 🙂
Eungyeol got to live his youth again, as part of a group of friends, in a band, with his his teenage father and Halmoni. And then skip to the coda in his live. Yes, there could be more (and better), but I'm fine with what we got and will remember this show fondly.

Or when he wanders, lonely as a cloud, through his backyard for no real reason except to hear it when women storm out and further the plot?

Or when he struts around dramatically in a big empty hall talking on the phone loudly so his voice can boom out sonorously?

Or when he quietly admits that he misses Hyo-shim to himself??

My Dearest, pt 2: 5.5 Most of what I had to say has been said by about 800,000 people under the recap.

Goryeo Kitan War: 7.0 After My Saddest, we need a war Korea can WIN against those pesky foreign intruders. Didn't love the palace politics in day 1, but things are starting to happen in day 2.

Strong Girl Nam-soon: 5.5 Strong Girl Weak Story. Oh, and don't drink the water -- let dehydration kill you instead of the narcotic.

Castaway Diva: 8.0

Matchmakers: 7.0

Vigilante: 7.0

Good Day to Be a Dog Finally Broadcast the Show: 8.0 I really dislike school bullying scenes and they are not what I came to this show to see, but ABCD partially redeemed ep 5. That's Anti-Bullying Cute Doggy. Ep 6 was more like what I came for.

Killing Vote: 5.0

Moon in the Day: 6.0 Better at 1.5x.

Wikipedia has articles on the Goryeo/Khitan wars & related topics. Beware spoilers, because it looks like the show is aiming to be at least semi-accurate(?) at least in the buildup to the 2nd conflict. Not sure about the final battle though.

I refuse to call this show Korea-Khitan War. Goryeo all the way!
It's also based on a fictionalized novel, but the writer may keep it semi-accurate. The Goryeosa was compiled by Confucian scholars of the Yi Dynasty who overthrew Goryeo, so of course, they'll highlight moral issues as justification.
I enjoyed General Kang Jo's character in "Empress Chun Chu." He has his flaws but is likable. Lee Won-jong is always great in sageuks.
I'll give it a shot this weekend.

In Queen Seonjong’s Wikipedia page (which seems to be a mess) there is this quote from the “Goryeosa”:
“ "Mokjong was a King with calm and strong personality, was good at archery and horseback riding, enjoyed alcohol and liked hunting. However, he didn't pay attention to government affairs.”

Hundreds of years later diplomatically that is the best Joseon could say about this guy. I think GKW stumbled badly out of the starting block in episode one highlighting Mokjong. Episode two with the introduction of the successor was slightly better.
I am already blending KING OF TEARS with GKW and imagining General Yi Seong-gye going to the palace to deal with King Mokjong. The king’s reign might have been a hell of a lot shorter.
Lol, sorry @kiara for the mini rant. I am now ready to move on with the GKW story in episode three.
Also this is the first hearing that the source for the drama is a novel.

@marcusnyc20, Bong-soo: You have the Joseon King Taejo's annals. The Goryeosa is written like that, from what I read. It's a translation mess. The original was written in classical Chinese. I don't know if @kumoiwa is still around, but she was the only one here who could read the original.
Rant away—no need to apologize.
I haven't found any information suggesting Mokjong was a gay emperor. Could it be the novel version?

Thanks @kiara for the clarification about GKW being based on a 2018 novel. It has been right in front of me and I just missed it. I just presumed GKW was going to be a straight, historical drama along the line of KING OF TEARS. OK. Now that I realize GKW’s writer is adapting a novel i will approach it a bit differently.

2

So does anyone know if this novel is largely historically accurate or more historical fiction- loosely based on history but a lot of room for creativity?

2

@koalatown
I don't know, sorry.
If I'm not mistaken, this is supposed to be a daeha sageuk, so we should expect more fact than fiction.

1

Viki made erred in turning Goryeo when it posted the title but it was, I think well-intentioned: 'Korea" is just the modern English version of the word "Goryeo'. Still that modernization does lose something of the flavor.

Twinkling Watermelon (Series review) - Mood progression: C+ / C+ / C / C+ / C+ / C / C / C
While the show was able to deliver many emotional moments throughout its run, good time travelling shows must respect a crucial point: time travel itself is a fantasy element rather than a framing device. And this is where the plot falls apart as we can observe from the rushed and inconclusive ending: the writer gets caught in a bind, struggling to uphold narrative logic.

The Killing Vote (Series review) - Mood progression: C / C+ / C- / D+ / D+ / D+ / D+ / D / D- / D- / D- / D-
Even without the insane scheduling dragging it down, the show pretty much shot itself in the foot when they revealed that it wasn’t the right person that the professor killed in revenge, because that just gave away the rest of the show’s plot and the voting system was reduced into a revenge plan, rather than actually being about votes. The ending was as cliche as it was.

Castaway Diva (Episode 5-6) - Mood: C-
Really, Show? The head producer just so happens to have an illness that leaves Bo Geol in the perfect situation to pry open everyone’s secrets in the cliffhanger? The singer side arc gets a new character but honestly it can be reduced to how a guy pits three women against each other (yawn!). Well, at least they revealed who Ki Ho is rather than drag it into the 2nd half?

Perfect Marriage Revenge (Episode 5-6) - Mood: C-
Of course, only a makjang would casually drop the bombshell reveal that the ML is also from the future during the makeout scene of all things. While I’m still enjoying the theatricality of it all, some part within me still wishes we didn’t have all of the outlandish tropes like birth secrets, since a romance within two people given a 2nd chance at life could’ve been interesting.

A Good Day to Be a Dog (Episode 5-6) - Mood: C-
As though the students weren’t enough trouble this week, we’ve got the ex + bully combination to worry about next week. It is also disappointing to see the writing being so contrived that our ML would meet a student at night in a dark place or that gymnastics was performed in order to get that FL falls onto ML scene. Well, at least Lee Hyun Woo showed range?

Vigilante (Episode 3-4) - Mood: C-
When the plot of a show moves at breakneck speed and ends before you even get a chance to digest the material, it’ll be a struggle to relate to any of the characters. It’s hard to tell whether the writing or the producing is at fault here, but certainly the acting is preventing this from turning into a mindless cartoon, tho to be honest it already is one with the super strength.

What I'm watching:

_ My Dearest (19/21). I'm looking forward to watching the ending of this great drama. Please, don't disappoint me.

_ Call it love (11/16). It's still too slow, and the main characters are not the funniest couple in town, but the episodes are beautifully shot.

_ Perfect Marriage Revenge (6/12). If two weeks ago my favorite character was the brownie brick, last week the main characters were the ML's wet pants.

_ C-drama New Life Begins (28/40). Now I got used to the comedy and the show is a joy to watch, I only would love ML and FL to share more sequences. They are a lovely couple, but she is always spending time with her female friends. More Bai Jing Ting, please XD

Finished:

_ Twinkling Watermelon. My favorite k-drama in 2023. Tenderness in buckets.

The Matchmakers I like everything! Each character, even the villain because she's so interesting. I love the direction, it's so beautiful, it's hard to not stop at every minute to take picture. I like the acting, Rowoon is so funny in this role, he face can move at the opposite of some actors. I didn't like Choi Yi-Hyun in her other dramas, but I like her in this role.

Twinkling Watermelon I felt kinda cheated. The writer gave to each character of very sob story and played the sensitive cord. But at the end, there wasn't a message, there wasn't communication between the parents and their respective kid. Yi-Chan and Chung-Ah were the reason I watch it till the end.

Moon in the Day I think with older and better actors, this drama would have been more interesting.

A Good Day to Be a Dog It's cute but CEW stoic face and flat ton is hard to watch when there is the lovely and lively Park Gyu-Young or the cute Yul or the nice sister or the mystery Tiger.

The Goryeo-Khitan War I'm waiting the end of My Dearest to watch it. One serious drama at a time.

My Dearest I'm very happy that this drama will end today. I'm just exhausted to watch it.

Perfect Marriage Revenge It's really fun to watch. No need to think.

Castaway Diva I'm so ready for Mok-Ha and Bo-Gyeol romance!

Vigilante I dislike every character...

My Dearest Ep 19 - I hope Qing princess's journey to joseon will finally justify the reason why Lee Chung-ah was casted in My Dearest. If not, My Dearest will have done a great disservice to the actress.

Perfect Marriage Revenge - So they both have the date of death on their wrists. The reveals now makes sense of Do-guk's reaction to Yi-joo's drawing, and Yi-joo and Do-guk's first meeting after their new chance at life.

Escape of the Seven - So Matthew Lee is K. I hope Kim Soon-ok has her sense in the right place. Where is Da-mi's father? Who has Grandpa Bang being giving his life for all this years? And why does he have the same scar as Da-mi's adoptive father and so conveniently and and most absurdly turn out to be K. Jay turning out to be the foundation president in Beneficial Fraud makes more sense than Matthew Lee being K. I know that this drama means that nothing ever makes sense and the writer just writes each dialogue and forgets it's existence.

Live Your Own Life - Except for Choi Soo-kyung, Director Yeom, Tae-hee and Hyo-do's dynamic (not them but their dynamic together), Madam Cha, Tae-min when he's not yearning for Hyo-shim, I don't really feel the rest of the cast.

Goryeo-Khitan War - If there's any semblance between Iron Empress and this, it's that the royals are an insufferable pain in the ass when they are not on their best behavior. Young Daeryangwon pissed me off in both dramas.

Watching
Strong Girl Nam-soon:
Last Saturday, for the first time, I wasn’t really well entertained by the episodes. I still want to know what will happen … especially to Si-oh.
Grandma is behaving rather terrible, but does not lose her powers … what is the criteria for using your powers wrong, then?
I know, I know … I was well warned, even by myself, as well as even more by other kind souls. But I feel the great-thing-that-could-have-been slipping through my fingers. Still, you can see some high and low points giffed over at my place.

Perfect Revenge Marriage:
Episode 6 was a little less horrible than the rest have been. I actually was OK entertained while watching, though of course it was nothing compared to how much fun I was having reading the contributions of Beanies, honourable mention to Cecee’s multivocal essays.
A line about being not alive, and not dead, brought Schrödinger to my mind, and from there of course it was not far to the sheep in the box from The Little Prince. And to Hamlet. That means I did quite a bit of giffing and photoshopping, too. It’s on my wall, if you feel like having quirky visual footnotes to that drama.

A Good Day to Be A Dog:
Finally two new episodes. I had a hard time with how softspoken the characters were around some rather traumatic events (not horror material), in ep. 5, but in ep. 6, events speeded up. There are a lot of plot threads now … will they be able to pick them all up?
The Matchmakers:
I loved this show from the start, but this week, they went – Like Rowoon’s eyebrow – over and beyond expectations.https://www.dramabeans.com/activity/p/1482628/#acomment-1483013
Even if I watch K-dramas, I honestly rarely have that kind of a real, fluffy feeling, but after this week’s episodes, - esp. the Monday one – I was all Cotton Candy inside – so many fluttering hearts, all over the place. So sweet! And then of course, the poison murders and stuff. Also, it is very beautifully filmed. So many garments waving in the wind or swung beautifully to end up hiding someone’s identity.
This is the best King I have seen, if we disregard the fact that Prince Charming becomes the King at the end of some of my favourite Dramas. I have been waiting so eagerly for the next episodes all week that my wall is full of “and then, and then, and then” gifs and thoughts on the subject.

Reply 1997:
It is a good drama. I think there is a very good description of a relationship with an inappropriate gap in age, authority, and experience – while the drama describes it as maybe a little hurdle in someone’s life, I cringe and was horrified at what happened to her. (Though no violence and probably also no sex. Just wrongness.).
And after that ended, the supposedly “cute, funny” description … maybe even progressive, compared to stories of virtuously virginal FLs? … the description of the FL being pressured be her hot fiancé to let him stay when whe wanted him to leave, and to kiss him passionately when she didn’t want to encourage that mood.
Mostly, FLs, after a long story of longing and will they/won’t they, when the relationship is secure, will do stuff like, inviting the ML home, but then their mum is there too, or in other ways hint at the possibility of sex, that she then chucklingly makes an impossibility. Otherwise, you will see a man holding a woman who only makes token resistance, while she secretly hopes he will carry on until she can tell herself that at least she tried.
But the FL here was not shown as someone who really wanted this to happen all along: She was sleepy, exhausted and annoyed. She was attracted to him, but for one didn’t want to be pregnant. Which she became. Still, it was all shown as being somehow fun. To me, I could imagine this situation a bit too well to find it funny. Well … I have giffed and essayed about it on my wall. https://www.dramabeans.com/activity/p/1486234/

Twinkling Watermelon : it’s a wrap. I’ll remember this drama as warm spring and summer breeze. That’s how it makes me feel. I love the friendship and family stories it offers and 80-90’s setting always deliver the best nostalgic feeling. I’m going to miss their youth, all the friendship, family and passion they showed to us. Maybe next year or probably even longer when i forget the story I’ll do a full rewatch.

I like the ending. I know a lot of people dislike the fact that their financial situation change completely because it left impressions that money is the problem solver of EG situation with his father. Well it can be perceived that way, but I also think the fact he became wealthy it definitely indicates that life is better after his travel to the past but doesn’t mean he had it easier. EG has it hard in the 1995. Despite couldn’t prevented the accident that cost his father’s hearing, EG gave his father a stage where he could had moments of shining brightly in his youth. He stood up against those witch to protect his mom, taught her sign language, even managed to restore his grandpa and mother relationship. For the changes he made in the past, his father had a taste of doing music, not distancing himself from his friends after the accident and a chance to earn a college degree. Mom no longer prisoned in her own house and she have her father back. If he goes back to the future just to continue the fight he left behind, then what is the point? What would that make of his father if he still insists on making EG pursue college and leave music after he himself know what stage feels like and no longer have worry about money? EG fight with his father didn’t left unfinished, it just took different form of resolution than I expected it. Instead of staying in original 2023 and try to convincing his father to let him do music, he had given a chance to travel back to the past to understand where his father came from, take responsibility and bear the burden to change his father past that resulted in his father’s change perspective on pursuing music. By doing all of those things in 1995 he prevented that fight from happen.

It also seems to me people love the family because at the beginning we know how hard their lives were given their disabilities and original financial situation and despite all of it they are thriving, bonded even tighter, and managed to moving forward. Every good characters they have that we love aren’t product by nature but something that emerged out of and in spite of their suffering. They are gold out of furnace. So having that said, people might think by making them wealthy somehow it would change who they are. Because it would eliminates so much suffering we’d seen in the earlier episodes that shaped them to be who they were. Money most of the time changes people. But this what I agree though dislike about the writer didn’t change the fact that Yi Chan would be deaf no matter what. No matter how hard EG tried to prevent...

… tried to prevent it, no matter how earnest his prayer for his father to not lose his hearing and voice. By keeping him as deaf and mute, for me it what kept him from not blinded by money. The heat in the furnace is still there and he is still came out of it as gold. EG also didn’t wake up with altered memories, he remembers all the things he had been through that happened before and during his time traveling.

But, if only we have 30 minutes more for the ending, in which we could see YC and CA meeting after the accident and EG having a deep conversation with his family especially his father after his trip to the past, maybe it could be a better if not a perfect ending. The ending a little bit rushed. But again, it wasn’t bad ending for me, it requires a bit more of thinking for me about the stories and possibilities that weren’t shown on the screen, but it’s good enough.

Castaway Diva : on waching this one I held myself from thinking too much because I want to enjoy PEB and CJH. I like last week episode more though because thanks to Bo Geol for having common sense and guts to trying to end RJ and SMH deceitful perfomance. I hope they’ll take this chance to fix things while it’s still fixable. I also want them to succeed because then, we can see SMH show herself to the world and singing on the stage she is always longing for. Hope the preview didn’t misleads us.

THE GORYEO-KHITAN WAR is finally here and I watched the first two episodes. The first episode was rather chaotic but by the end of the second episode things were more in focus. It has the same writer as KING OF TEARS but will it be as good? After two episodes the jury is still out.

My wife was absolutely reduced to tears during episode eighteen of MY DEAREST, a show that she says she still loves. She is no shrinking violet these days either, having watched a multitude of Sageuks and Chinese Costume Dramas. Her more normal attitude is perhaps best illustrated by her reaction to the first season of the PBS drama MARIE ANTOINETTE: She dropped it half-way through after reaching the conclusion that the title character was simply too stupid to live. But rather than diving into a Chinese Costume drama sha has been binge watching YELLOWSTONE.

I am still loving THE MATCHMAKERS and CASTAWAY DIVA. But my real guilty pleasure is PERFECT MARRIAE REVENGE.

We finally have a confession by our ML to our FL in the daily drama UNPREDICTABLE FAMILY (picture me cheering). That relationship is going well but our other two- not so much. After 42 episodes that is actually acceptable- there is plenty of time left for their stories. This is absolutely my very favorite show which I am watching with a smile.
.
More suffering by our FL in the weekender LIVE YOUR OWN LIFE. This weekend will mark the point where we are a third of the way through. If the writer wants to induce real rage in the audience, then this show succeeds admirably- at least with me. I am no longer satisfied with the goal of the FL and the 2ML freeing themselves from their families: I want the FL’s mom to go to prison and FL’s middle brother to fail the bar exam. We do not yet see the promised story where our FL begins to live her own life. Until we do the show will drag. If that does not happen soon then I will be convinced that the writer is simply a sadist.

I also want the middle brother to suffer the consequences of the assault and not have the women save him

I agree with you on that. But then his girl next door will never receive the revelation that she really wants to go back to being a lawyer but one with her own office helping ordinary people, etc. She deserves to be happy and that is how she can get there. I think that her 'dream' of being an actress was simply a reaction to her unhappiness at working in a big law firm environment. She too needs to 'live her own life' and that does not involve being an actress. It is ironic that she had been too good a lawyer for her own good: Outwardly successful but inwardly miserable. This way she can go on to a happier life and make middle brother suffer the consequences by making him literally pay her sister back.

I think you’re spot on about the bad actress. I would though love if the end of her epiphany was “maybe I should let him learn from his own mistakes “ lol. I’m sure you can tell I am really mad at him
