Korean variety crime shows are making a comeback, but they really cannot compete with real life.

Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter and “best friend” was charged this week for bank fraud for alleging stealing $16 million from Ohtani’s bank account to pay gambling debts. If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in federal prison. The scheme is unbelievable: Ohtani’s American agent, financial advisors and accountants were all stone walled by the interpreter who asked for access to the account for tax and estate planning purposes by saying Ohtani wanted to keep the account “private.” But no one went directly to Ohtani with a different interpreter to get to the bottom of this account. The bank fraud, with the interpreter posing as the baseball star to bank employees to wire transfer funds, shows how trusting people can be with untrustworthy individuals.

But that is not the top fraud story of the week. CBS News reported a top Vietnamese property tycoon was sentenced to death on Thursday in one of the biggest corruption cases in history, with an estimated $27 billion in damages. A panel of three hand-picked jurors and two judges rejected all defense arguments by Truong My Lan, the chair of major developer Van Thinh Phat, who was found guilty of swindling cash from Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB) over a decade.

"The defendant's actions... eroded people's trust in the leadership of the (Communist) Party and state," read the verdict at the trial in southern business hub Ho Chi Minh City. The scam now amounted to $27 billion — a figure equivalent to six percent of the Vietnam's 2023 GDP. The figure dwarfs even the amount that FTX cryptocurrency exchange founder Sam Bankman-Fried who was recently convicted of swindling his customers out of an estimated $10 billion.

Wow! That interpreter was so audacious to commit such a crime.

I am quite amazed that the Vietnamese tycoon was tried and convicted in court for the fraud. I hope they caught all the culprits. I have hope in humanity.

According to the report, there were 85 other Vietnam case defendants.

In my opinion, Ohtani's advisors dropped the ball on not demanding the bank account records and talking to Ohtani independently of the interpreter.

85 other defendants thats a first. I sure hope other countries will follow to punish the rich and corrupt.

They definitely dropped the ball on both sides. A fraudster will always find a way if he is desperate enough.

Btw, on a different note, I can’t even imagine having so much money that a $16M fraud takes so long to be discovered. A $700M contract is indescribably obscene in our world of extreme inequality.

The Premiere of Lovely Runner this week reminded me of how good Kim Hye-yoon was in Sky Castle, unlikeable but sympathetic characters are difficult to play and she nailed it.

Also, this years Best Actress (TV) nominees are an absolutely solid bunch, i would have replaced Lim Ji-yeon with Han Hyo-joo though, she was fantastic in Moving.

I think people just find it's unfair that QoT ML was nominated while she wasn't, which I cannot really comment on since I don't watch the drama... but hey, it would've been far more shocking if k-ent's fave golden boy KSH didn't get any!

Didn't see HHJ and PBY dramas, but they are strong actresses and totally capable of doing beyond good with a right role. While KTR's performance in REVENANT I watched myself and was still awed despite already knowing what she's capable of, which is quite an achievement in my book. I did laugh at show being nominated in "Best writing" category tho - I LOVED it, but its plot had tons of holes bigger than moon craters. Acting, directing and sound editing 100% made it a hit, pls give the credit where it's actually due!

Can't be worse than Good Bad Mother nominated for Screenplay and Best Drama.

Han Yo Joo definitely deserved a nomination. And JJS and Jang Dong Yoon deserved one ahead of KSH. I am still wondering what did KSh do in the first eight episodes to deserve a place.

QoT actors are good, but if making one constantly cry is the criteria, then the entire cast needs to be nominated because all of them make you cry at one point or another (some out of frustration but that's a different story).

3

@minniegupta1 Baeksang may be a respectable award compared to TV channels home ones, but even they aren't immune to trivial things like hype. If an actor gave a great performance but it/drama overall didn't generate enough of buzz, well... And we all know which kdrama is THE most buzzy one atm *shrugs*

At this point KSH just needs to appear in a drama and he'd be 99% guaranteed to collect all the awards for it, really. No disrespect to his objectively very good skills, but this is becoming ridiculous. Someone needs to investigate the man for a secret deal with Devil or something)))

3

I am so disappointed that “Like flowers in Sand” was not nominated for the gem that it is and that Jang Dongyoon was robbed of a nomination too. Just so shortsighted and absurd.

2

I loved the Sky Castle reunion between Kim Hye-yoon and Song Geon-hee. I don't have second lead syndrome (Ryu Sun-jae is perfect), but omg, Song Geon-hee and Tae-sung are so charismatic.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

Allow me to elaborate a bit on the convention I went to last week, because something beautiful happened to me there. For those who did not read last Open Thread: I cosplayed as Mad Hatter, with two friends as Alice and Red Queen to keep it all Wonderland. I got the crazy idea a few months ago, joked about it to my friends, things escalated as they took me seriously and here we are! 🎩🐇❤️

Rather than copy a specific version, we decided to pick some colours and specific symbols for our characters as a starting point and go from there. The queen had lots of red hearts, a huge collar made of heart cards with layers of skirts in red, black and white. Alice wore a blue dress with dashes of white, flowers, flamingo’s, clocks, rabbits. Mad Hatter is far out of my comfort zone. His clothes are dapper and the colors tend to somewhat stand out. Despite knowing better, I was scared that I would be ignored, or worse, mocked.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Shortly after arriving, the convention staff photographer asks to take a picture of us three. Another professional photographer follows in his footsteps. An infamous Inuyasha cosplayer known for photographing cosplayers does too. Years ago he photographed another cosplay I did. Our picture is among many others on the official facebook page of the convention and we managed to track down the other professional photo as well. 📷🤳🏻👀

One vendor liked the picture and gushed about how kind the three of us were. I cannot remember her, but we clearly left a positive impact and impression, which makes my heart swell. It was probably just a polite greeting or some praise on her work, but it must have meant a lot to her. Moral of the story? Despite my many brushes with rejection in the past, people really do like and remember me better than I believe.🥰

P.S. I’d rather not share any pictures to protect our privacy, which is why I opted to describe the cosplays instead. However, I did take some pictures of my outfit and posted them on my fan wall for those interested.😁

In The Midnight Studio this week Han Bom was upset by Ki-joo's one word replies to her messages. Very relatable.

When I used to receive "hmm" and "k" in response to my long winded messages during our dating phase it used to drive me crazy. Not that he has learned to communicate any better now. It's just that now I have learned to distinguish the varied meanings of "hmm" in his messages.

What are your experiences Beanies.

Well I have learned from the best. 😉
Left to myself as you know I can ramble along quite peacefully. But to get a conversation going it requires two people and sometimes it is exhausting to be the only one to pick up the threads. 🙃

3

I know what you mean, I am like that with the kids. But I persevere.
But you know when I get the hmm from my hubby? When I start talking about kdramas. 🤣
My husband has no problem to ramble on by himself. I used to complain when I used to be younger and he used to say that he is smart and that is why he always has something to talk about. So I don't complain anymore, I just say hmm. 🤣 So there you go Cera, you are the smarter one and keep on rambling!

5

Hahaha... self-praise is the best praise. Thank you! 😉 I think...!!

2

It's just that now I have learned to distinguish the varied meanings of "hmm" in his messages.

Exactly. Everyone has their singular texting habits, so I just get used to them.
I have friends and family that don't respond to texts, at all. Others respond every two centuries, others respond a little too often, etc. I have a friend that deletes her phone history so she never continues the conversation. She just says "hi" and disappears. So I got used to only say "hi" too. With her is just better to make a video call. LOL
I go from "texting a little too often" to "disappearing for three months", so I can't really complain about other people's habits tbh.

Happy Friday, Beanies! This was a crazily hectic week and my head hurts a lot, so I needed something to cheer me up. Thankfully, I've got it – after a freaking month and a half LYN is back online streaming! The nature is healing and all that... For better or worse, such a long break meant he was far more into chatting than singing, so there's no good performances of new OSTs or anything like that. He kind of tried with a few, but just couldn't get into the mood, I guess. So boy gave up and kept talking... and talking... for 5 hours. What an unparalleled stamina wait, that sounded wrong somehow...

Aside of many fun stories – he was supposed to have a cameo in THE LEGEND OF SHEN LI, but that didn't happen (schedule conflict?) and now I'm devastated (gimme my xianxia demon Ning-ge, dammit!) - he also had the time of his life disciplining fans, which is always the funniest show ever. Like where else do you find an idol who would casually threaten to high kick you for overstepping boundaries? I'm just afraid some people would still find that quite tempting... He needs to think of other, scarier options. And hire more bodyguards, since his current ones doesn't seem to keep up with rapidly growing thirsty crowd paparazzi. More drama-related fun stories tomorrow in news segment because I'm lazy rn.

Now to the music – wasn't sure what theme to choose this time, but his silly goose antics gave me an idea – funny performances. Boy, does he have a lot of them, I might need to spend more weeks on this alone...

Speaking of xianxia – he may dislike the genre, but he's surely not averse to fantasy filters. Fox demon one looks quite good, ngl. Song doesn't sound happy though, and title - “Deep” - kinda confirms that. But you'd never guess from his mood, not to mention him blaming mic for messing up the pitch again – shameless, shameless huli jing!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgBBIfkWaYo

Another one from the same day – sugar high incidents happens often in that house, I see. What's with the lightsaber? And then flowers?! That's his own song – from his still the only one full album, called “Like you very much” or something along the lines. How dare he say that and “for real” while looking straight into camera! Man's flirt cells are all over the place.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJAcSnoio2A

What an apt title lol. How that's not his song too? Absolutely no one suits the description better!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHmeuYji-2Q

We've heard this before but such, ahem, performance deserves another glance. Kinda seems like there were liquids things stronger than sugar involved... Look at boys joining the madness, they rarely do so! Title is “The song of Liangzhou”. Btw, is that Emily The Corpse Bride on his shirt? *squints*

Gotta say, his definition of a creative cover is sometimes TOO creative – doing the whole song through megaphone? Sure, why not! Hope his studio is soundproofed properly and his neighbors aren't secretly planning his murder for all that noise... Title is “The last blossom”.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9e6VZaWHqYI

One does not simply talk about silly songs and not include his personal cheesy anthem. If you think the title and lyrics (you don't need to know the language to get it, really!) aren't silly enough, he also heavily resembles Christmas tree DANCES here... well, tries to. At least he's not dressed like other folks on stage, that's be too much even for my endless patience)))
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDLt3rIG0nY

This one sounds innocent, right? Well, it's titled “Neon Sweetheart”, whatever that means... His wig and hat also got a lot of flack, which he was pretty angry about, because how DARE we imply he's not super cute even with this fisherman grandpa-style horror on))
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7F5MqlHxsM

Bonus: same song, but he also abuses employs his puppy Daimi to dance along with him – which she hates and, as usual, retaliates by trying to lick his face get it, girl, for all of us!, which HE hates. Ah, family love)))
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdSrDZRX-Cw

Bonus#2: vlog of his day off in Disneyland (I side-eye everything related to The Greedy Mouse, but him I can forgive, plus he's dressed so cutely!). Nice to see him resting and just having fun, that doesn't happen often...

I'm really wondering if there's a genre he totally cannot do - except dancing, ofc, and even that is somewhat doable with the right style and some practice. I think I'll show you footage of his only one decent moves day next time as well, it's pretty cute too.

I resisted the bannana and matcha ones, and very conservatively just got the cocoa flavour. (In a box of 12! so I will enjoy them for a while..) I see them occasionally in K-dramas, but mostly I think they don't need to advertise, because Marshmallow! Did anyone else have any fun snacks or excellent Korean food this week?

K-movie night last night. Another Hong Sang-soo film named 'In Our Day' (2023). His films are definitely an acquired taste but it's a taste that I have definitely acquired. I've seen 14 of his films. Who needs superfluous things like plot, anyway? This is the second of his films where Kim Min-hee gets to explain why she no longer does mainstream films. And this is his second film that focuses (at length) on a cat.

Jang Dong Yoon should have been nominated for his portrayal of Kim Baek Du in Like Flowers in Sand. His acting was extraordinary, authentic, and completely embodied without any scene chewing or flash--it's the type of acting that is so seamless and so natural that it is hard to overlook as it doesn't seem like acting. However, JDY's Baek Du was a truly memorable character. I would like to give him all the flowers for this role even if Baeksang board didn't nominate him because this type of acting should be acknowledged and encouraged.

Thank you very much @pynyc, Gum Shoe for this comment. When I first read the list a few days ago I noticed Jang Dong-yoon’s absence from the best actor category. His ssireum wrestler Baek-doo in FLOWER is for me the best performance I have seen him give in
the 6 dramas I have seen him in (SOLOMON’S PERJURY (2016), A POEM A DAY (2018), SEARCH (2020), OASIS (2023), SUNSHINE (2023) and LIKE FLOWERS IN SAND (2023/24). JDY’s work in 2023/24 was outstanding. I don’t consider CUPID a 2023 project. When at the end of FLOWER those petals rained down on Baek-doo kneeling in sand in the ring they could also stand as an acknowledgment of the body of Jang Dong-yoon’s work in 2023/24.

Did anyone see the eclipse that happened on Monday?
(The only reason I remember it happened on Monday was because Lovely Runner premiered on Monday and it featured an eclipse which I commented on haha)

I didn't know about the eclipse until the morning of the event. From my location, I only saw a crescent, not the totality and I saw that much due to strangers sharing their glasses with me.

Even though I don't have much faith in humanity, there's minute moments when I have to admit there are some good ones out there.

Sidenote: while I didn't experience a total eclipse, I did experience the temperture drop. It made me think of when the dinosaurs went extinct. Random? And yet that's exactly what came to mind because I think I saw that after the asteroid it, it got cold and dark(er). I feel like this post had a plot twist haha

Maybe y'all thought it would a nice reflection on an event and then I ended with extinction. Sorry haha

Yes, but it was not full totality. I watched the news accounts for the full show.

We had 99% here, had the chill and some of the funny-shaped reflections of leaves but it was still pretty light out. I didn’t believe people who said the difference between 99% and 100% was (pun intended) night and day but can now verify that is true. One interesting thing, my flower bed was full of very busy bees of various sizes buzzing around and at the peak, they completely stopped. It took about 20 minutes for them to start moving again.

I was in totality for an eclipse (a long time ago in a place far away) .. I remember that all the birds stopped, and roosted into the trees. And then we had a dawn chorus at about 4 in the afternoon, when the sun started to come out again. Was very strange.

I know logically korean actors must have bad experiences or not like projects they've been apart of but they would NEVER admit that but I couldn't help but wonder what projects would make which actors feel that way about it.

This came to mind when I saw Kristen Stewart say she hated her Charlie's Angels movie and also how there's that meme or knowledge about how nobody hates the Twilight movies like the cast hate the Twilight movies.

I think Western actors are more likely to comment about their past work experiences, for good or ill. I have read interviews where actors said they did not get along with the director or other actors, the script changes turned the project to mush, or the final cut diluted the cast performances.

The most negative comments Korean actors talk about is filming in harsh weather conditions (like spending the winter outside in Paju for CLOY) but they mostly state everyone got through it. I think there is a cultural component as well as the Korean entertainment industry is very small. Actors are raised to respect their seniors and people in authority. They are expected to show up to the set and overcome any obstacles (technical or personal). People with negative attitudes may not get casting offers. Also, it is taboo to disparage a project for personal reasons. Even when a film or drama is derailed by a lead actor's personal scandal, the rest of the crew does not publicly pile on to the scandal story. They often have to re-shoot scenes (usually with no extra pay) and then politely promote the project when it is completed.

Something I often notice is that K-performers almost always thank the fans. Western actors rarely do that, at this year’s Oscar’s only one actor speech thanked the viewers/fans (might have been Robert Downey Jr).

Not surprising cause for them it *is* about catering to fans and fan culture while for Western entertainers it's more about consumable product/supply & demand.

K entertainers and fans are supposed to be interwined while there's a bit more of a line with Western entertainers. I think Western entertainers, specifically singers, would thank fans at a concert.

I don't watch awards shows anymore so I don't remember what's said at them but I think it was tailored for the audience at any given event. For example at a prestigious, business show such as the Academy Awards, it's The Academy then maybe managers & agents and then family. For the SAG awards, I think it's always something like "we all [actors] have so hard and it's an honor to even be here with my fellow nominees" then maybe family or managers/agents.
For something like the MTV awards, it's the fans or maybe it's the network. I don't even remember who does the MTV awards haha. Do fans votes for that or it some industry folks?
Well, People's choice I think is voted by common people but again I don't even remember and it's probably changed anyway by now.

I've found that promotional events can reveal a lot about how the leads feel about one another. It's fascinating to watch how they handle these events depending on whether they have a great relationship or are merely being professional. As examples: I just watched one with the leads for Lovely Runner and it was obvious how much they like and appreciate one another. On the other hand, the promo events for See You in My 19th Life were purely professional, sometimes even stiff.

Thank you to both of you. It was lovely. I’m too old and world weary to ship any actors together so not that but you’re right that there are noticeable differences in such a controlled industry about promos that allow for viewers to see whether any KD actors have enjoyed working together or wanted to head for the hills to get away from each other.
One more thing: I’m no fashion maven but why would a stylist put the lovely BWS in that red safari vest and short pants suit? The other choices were spot on but those two? Oof!

1

@DncingEmma Well, I'm not surprised that not all actors became best buds. It would be unusual if they did. At the end of the day, it IS a job. Plus, there are so many other things going on in people's lives that we never really know the true story behind these events. However, when there's a real connection visible, like with the LR leads, it usually translates into a lot more fun onscreen with the drama for the viewers 😉

2

Of course I’m aware of the factors that you mentioned. It is a job and creating a fantasy is the core of the job.

2

One promo event that I foolishly watched under sufferance was for “Flower Knight”. It was excruciatingly stiff, awkward and boring. The senior actor who played the father in law went on and on and on and just dominated in the most ridiculous and tedious manner. The leads sat next to each other stiffly, uncomfortably and didn’t interact at all but for a super awkward moment. It was a bizarre event. If I had seen that first, I might have decided not to watch KF. I’m glad (poor choice of words but you get what I mean) I saw it afterwards.

If you want a counter-example, I recall OBY leads having a magazine (Elle?) interview together and man, if only just 20% of that chaotic romcom chemistry was used in the actual show! The best thing is the comment at one point that they actually TONED DOWN quite a bit their usual banter to appear more "prim and proper" - the way my jaw dropped trying to imagine the unfiltered version...

Found it (subbed):

Even their bts was hilarious. There is a bts at their Joseon CIS headquarters where PHS is sitting with his arm on JSN's shoulder, and she is like - 'Bo Ya'? LOL!

Interesting; I wonder why that is.

The difference of culture is important.

In Korea, they are expecting the celebrities to be examples for the society. So smoking is bad, same for drugs, alcohol is good but not the DIU, they often showed on their insta if they voted, or during the COVID is they were vaccinated.

So saying they regret will surely bring backclash.

And more experienced celebrities are better at media play, protecting their image, networking with producers and studios.

I've seen idols make those type of comments, but that's only because I follow idols, I haven't been that invested in any actor(that isn't an idol) to know.

So for example the members of GOT7 try to delete Dream High 2 or Dream Knight from existence.
Myungsoo from INFINITE wasn't that happy with his drama Welcome either.

I've seen actors complain about their characters, tho. Not the drama itself, but their characters. In Guk didn't like Louie (Shopping Wang Louie), Nam Joo Hyuk didn't like Baek Yi Jin (25-21), Park Eun Bin... It wasn't her character, but she did said the romance in CDiva didn't make sense.

Maybe they do compilation like everyone else but just in a different way? I think idols are more free about it, tho. Maybe because idols complain about their own concepts/music.

I'm kinda surprised idols of all people would do that considered how they're damn near gagged by their agencies and fans.
I suppose the older ones may have a little more leeway or just not give a damn. Like from what I understand Kim Heechul often says what's on his mind or goes against the grain of typical pandering idol behavior and he's always been that way. Now I think he's in his 40s and considered part of a legendary group and he's still working so I guess he's in a place where he can be that way.

I've only seen 1 press conference and that was for Flower of Evil. Moon Chaewon mentioned a previous project, I don't what it was but I guess it wasn't that well received, and she mentioned it was her own failings and that's why she wanted to do better with FOE (or something like that)

I'm surprised about Nam Joo Hyuk & Park Eun Bin. Why would they think that?

Personally I don't remember 2521 enough or have as much emotional attachment to say much about his character. And for CD, the romance was never the draw for me

Well, most of the idols I like have that type of image, like the one you describe your Hee Chul. And obviously now they're older and they're legends and stuff, but they were like that since rookie days. It's not like they say groundbreaking and controversial stuff, tho. It's just simply honesty. Like "X comeback was boring". Or "they made us wear this crazy outfits and we looked ridiculous". Or "My acting/drama was cringe worthy".

Idk, maybe I'm overthinking it, but I have the impression some actors don't like it when their characters are soft guys. Watching 25-21 promotions was hilarious because Tae Ri was super proud of her character and everyone thought Na Hee Do was super cool, and then there was Joo Hyuk and his lack of enthusiasm for Yi Jin.

What Park Eun Bin said wasn't that much, either. And I don't remember well. They just were talking about being in love with one person for 15years and waiting for them (not dating other people for 15years), or something like that and she was like "not realistic". But she wasn't being negative about the show per se, she just said it made more sense to think of it as "fantasy".

Happy Friday Beanies! It feels like Kdramaland is in a lull, hopefully only momentarily. Meanwhile, I am binging The Interest of Love which, somehow, I missed ( was it a Covid blur, or were there so many other dramas to watch that it slipped by me?) I’m on ep 8 and I’m liking it quite a bit. The bank setting with friends, lovers, rich VIP families, and working class families with misfortunes is done well. Yoon Yeon Suk too, he’s always hot and understated.
Another fun watch for the past few episodes is super model Hye Jin in Milan for fashion week as an honored guest of Dolce and Gabbana after formerly working as a model for them. (My Little Old Boy, one of the segments for 3 weeks).
Crossing my fingers for a sunny weekend!
