Netflix announced 6 new Korean variety shows. The first, The Influencers, had seventy-seven of South Korea’s most prominent influencers, who collectively have a net market value of 400 billion won, will compete against each other to prove themselves as the best influencer in the Korean Peninsula. Between the seventy-seven competitors, there are a combined 120 million followers across platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. This seemed like a bad idea from the start. How interesting is a large group of attention-seeking, nouveau grifters on a survival game show? Social media “celebs” have one purpose in life: share TMI.

One should not be surprised that the series was spoiled by the winner. The winner of the show was originally promised ₩300 million KRW (about $226,000 USD) in prize money. With such high stakes at risk, many participants tried hard to win. On August 21, 2024, it was reported by Media Today that Netflix did not give Oking the payout, even though the show concluded filming ages ago.

This was due to him breaking the most important rule. In May 2024, months before the show aired, it was already spoiled online that Oking would be the final winner. Netflix determined that the person who had spread the rumor was none other than Oking himself, rendering his contract with them void, due to the strict non-disclosure clause.

Game shows are cheaper to produce than k-dramas. With Netflix adding more of them to their content pile, it seems the network is adding quantity over quality to fill its schedules.

The sole fact that someone thought of, made AND will probably watch a show like that does not give me any hope for humanity, not that I had much of it left anyway...

As I was reading that, I couldn't help but shake my head. That whole situation is so fitting haha.

I saw that some folks complained that the show wasn't more meaningful or had more depth. And it's like what did people seriously expect? Influencers + competition + tiny attention spans + attractive women + Netflix
(I have no idea what the male contestants looked like)

But the ending was so predictable! Of course the person couldn’t keep their mouth shut. There are no secrets for those people. I bet Netflix had and internal poll going as to how fast the secret would be revealed. And the prize money probably went to the employee that guessed🤣🤣🤣

9TAILEDVIXEN'S 3RD WEEK BACK AT WORK FROM SABBATICAL:

(A) I'm still battling the Post-Sabbatical Mountain of Work (TM) but am finally almost back to normal work levels. This is despite careful planning and delegation ahead of my sabbatical. It is what it is and so I push onwards.

(B) Aerial Yoga class has been progressing and I have bruises all over thanks to pushing against the silks twice a week.

Before every class, I have been testing my left knee to see how much it has healed by using it to push against the silks before class. It's less shaky this week. The instructor reckons it'll be another month or so before it'll be completely stable and I can resume practising aerial moves using both sides of my body.

(C) This Week in Korean Women's News

1.How South Korea can support female research leaders

As of 2022, nationally, across the academic, government and industry sectors, just 23% of Korea's research workforce is female. In South Korea, female students in STEM fields constitute 31% of university entrants, and as graduates — generally in their 20s — they are employed at similar rates to men in science and technology roles. But a significant gap emerges in their 30s and continues to their 50s, with a 30% difference in employment rates between men and women in these age groups.

(b) 'Pilot' tops summer box office, highlights female directors in Korean cinema

The comedy film "Pilot," which premiered on July 31, has drawn 3.21 million viewers as of Aug. 13, making it the highest-grossing Korean film of the summer and the third highest-grossing Korean film of the year.

"Pilot" marks the third successful film directed by a woman this year, following "Citizen of a Kind" (directed by Park Young-joo) and "Following" (directed by Kim Se-hwi).

In an industry where female-directed commercial films are still rare, this achievement stands out. The ongoing struggle in the film industry has led to the sentiment: "What would we do without female directors?"

Wow, great outcomes for the Director Pilot. I am waiting patiently for it to become available to watch.

The significantly reduced career options as women progress is really disappointing, what a waste of talent. I wonder where they end up working in order to pay their bills and the difference it makes in the field as they could be the one with the answer that results in a significant breakthrough.

With three-quarters of the year done (including summer big tent film season), only 7 Korean movies made a profit at the box office. It is a staggering low amount for industry that was surging after the success in 2019 of PARASITE. Insiders have complained for a while that the film industry is in a recession, but the same is true for k-drama producers.

Kudos to the 3 women directors of the 7 successful films. But the lower ROI means Korean films will pare back their budgets to "the good old days" meaning indie style scripts shot for $3-5 million rather than the average $10-15 million average movie.

My theory is that they only make movies with intention of selling them to a Netflix type streaming service. They satisfy those who say film is the best but the real money will be made after.
What do you think?
I always find your posts so interesting

Prior to the pandemic, I read that SK was the third largest box office market even though the country has only 51 million residents. Koreans really liked to go to movies (with friends, dates and family outings).

Korean filmmaking used to be a profitable industry with most "big films" costing only $3-4 million to produce (meaning the break even point was just over 1 million admissions). Prior to the pandemic, 2 million was the break even point. Most Korean movies were made for domestic consumption first, then limited licensing overseas. The biggest movie studios own the most domestic theaters in a vertical monopoly; the focus had always been on making movies for local theaters with the average run time of 3 to 4 weeks (unless it was a blockbuster).

PARASITE was a big budget movie ($11.4M) that domestically had more than 10 million admissions ($64.5M) but ranked only 5th that year but it exploded overseas to garner a final total of $263M. The Cannes and Oscar awards put the spotlight on Korean film industry and story telling. That led to foreign investment into Korea films which quickly pivoted as streaming platforms paid for either producing or licensing specific projects (more TV series than films) for global release. The influx of US-style film budgets led to the average Korea film budgets to rise several fold ($20-35M or more) which led to instability and profitability industry issues.

Thus, a vicious cycle started: actors were being paid a lot more since foreign investors paid more, which hurt smaller, independent productions who could not get the star power to sell to local investors. Of course, there were risk takers who made shows with no commitment from a network or platform - - and there are still more than 75 completed orphan projects with no distribution or release date because the streamers wanted to control and own the final productions. Today, only specific movies and shows paid up front by streamers (Disney or Netflix or domestic platforms) are being made by local studios since they got burned by unsold inventory. Otherwise, studios are making original content abet at lower budgets and expectations.

So interesting. I know COVID changed my own viewing. We used to go to movies 3-4 times a month with multiple views of same show. Now because of my germ phobias, lack of interesting content and better streaming I see 2-3 movies a year

As of 2022, nationally, across the academic, government and industry sectors, just 23% of Korea's research workforce is female.

I was just reading an article on S. Korea's defense and arms export business, which has flourished with the Ukraine war and now is a significant bright spot for its economy. (I have mixed feelings about this, I vastly prefer the export of kdramas to weapons! --but at least they are supplying the "good guys" in Ukraine and Europe.)

The article said a significant challenge is the shortage of research and technology experts, so much so that some of the larger firms are establishing factories and research facilities overseas, particularly in Latin America. Now, there are other good reasons for this international expansion of course--I'm sure salaries are lower in countries like Peru and the Dominican Republic, and in general building factories that provide jobs and materiel for other countries contributes to good will, extending Korea's international influence.

But after reading the link in this post, it also seems that an obvious course of action would be to remove restrictions on the domestic work force and tap more into the talent and intelligence of Korea's own women researchers and tech workers!

It just goes to show that bias and stereotypes are sometimes more powerful than straightforward economic interests.

Happy Friday, Beanies! We were doubly blessed last week because LYN streamed twice – second time on 17th to celebrate his fanclub's anniversary. In romantic (?) pink shirt and great mood (as long as he wasn't asked about a certain ADWAD scene that made the whole Weibo go wild... that he's not going to comment on, because he's “not shameless” - only we are, I guess))). This time – aside of being his usual playful-slash-snarky self – he sang quite a bit, but mostly tracks we've already heard before... not that it'll stop lazy me from sharing them anyway – what a great excuse to slack off, ty, Ning-ge!

Starting with my great fave “The night of Ulaanbaatar” - only half of it, unfortunately, but still! This “love dizzy” filter is so funny btw – not sure if you can clearly see, but it also gives him a bit of drunken pink blush, which looks awesome. Also, poor thing must've feel so hot in his winter hat! His hair has grown quite long too – he'll probably do something to it after being done with ADWAD...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oOmNWs3FaQ

Then his very first OST, “Let the wine” from SAND SEA drama – I believe it was also some symbolic date for that franchise, which is why he performed it. Anyway, it's a great song so no need for extra reasons to sing it once in a while, right? Feat fugly huge black glasses to pay homage to his character in another installment of said saga – and him dancing around like a drunk, to fit the title, I presume)))
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDR19sxz-qY

When I got to lyrics of the next track – his own oldie “Do not seek” - my jaw was on the floor. How on Earth this killer breakup tearjerker is a fitting choice for a happy, celebratory occasion? The gall of this troll, I cannot! Honestly, I'm borderline uncomfortable by the song – it feels so... personal, you know. The kind of rabbit hole I don't think I have any right to go in, so just listen to it and move on. Maybe he got he's going too far which is why he only did half of it...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EN1xTVAplU

Full audio for those who liked the pain:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRzqQP37VNQ

And older live with subs – heavens, I really need to stop here, it literally gives me creeps!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cK_Ko9ciW9A

I wonder why he was so into half-cut singing that day – surely not because of voice problems, he sounds fine to me. Too tired? Then again, he didn't have to sing at all if that was the case... Another familiar track with “One star”, I think I shared it very recently. At least mood-wise it's a bit of improvement from the last one...

More of “Yesterday boy” from latest installment – guess it's his fave song rn. That voice modulation he did for a few lines, whoa! I'm not sure if I should laugh or clap))) Btw, it was so cute how he kept scrolling through his own song library – a huge one, as you can guess! - and being like “I don't even remember these songs, let alone how to sing them, but my seniors in industry assured me it's a common problem”. Well, thankfully he's about to have a stage performance on 26th with his 3 OSTs – namely “Looking for you”, “Heart's longing” and “Offer” - so there will be some stimulation to his failing memory^^
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lBHzDyN1bA

If we don't count the mean trick he did by playing intro of “Offer” and then ending his stream right then and there – I have a few words here, mister, and I'm afraid you wouldn't like them! - last song from that day would be a cute childhood-themed “Handwritten fairytale”, another relatively old track. Isn't it impressive how 5 years ago in his case means old stuff because there was sooo much after that? I really like how it sounds, btw, too bad there is no subs or translated lyrics anywhere. I even think it was his very first time doing live of it, we're honored to witness a premiere!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wXkj3RVpZw

All I could find was a recorded version with Chinese lyrics, which isn't much of help in my case yet even tho I do start to recognize certain characters...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mseCVZLq1DI

Bonus1: celebratory video starting from his very first fanmeet/concert 7 years ago – wow, he played piano there? I need to find that!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbB0g_6dvRE

Bonus2: pretty boy – in blue! - inviting us unworthy mortals to listen to his performance at upcoming awards, which I mentioned above. I assume they're going to give him something too – his OSTs for SHEN LI, FYH and especially YOLO did very well in charts, I think. Kinda surprised only 1 of these 3 is in lineup tho – YOLO he already sang on stage a few times, but why no “Ages/Lifetimes”, is it too tasking to sing live? Hmmm, something is not right here - “Offer” is by no means a walk in the park either, I recall multiple instances of him whining that it's basically tongue twister level of difficult in chorus... Maybe next time? We still have plenty of shows left for him to attend, esp if he keeps his word and takes a pause of filming dramas until 2025.
https://x.com/Bigsislilred/status/1826475025786175807

Bonus3: Wang Yizhe (Qian Zhao) from AJTL roasting thanking Boss Ning – the way Liudao boys keep addressing him like they did in a drama, my heart! - for his supporting message earlier. Did he just call LYN tsundere?! Now that's a unique take on it)))

I know, right? When some weeks ago LYN talked about that supporting message and showed WYZ's pic from show's rehearsal, I could barely recognize him. He lost a lot of weight as part of his singer makeover, I think, that often ages person down visually.

Do you ever have a moment when you randomly remember a drama and it causes a strong reaction? For example, I felt that way recently about remembering Big Mouth and how stupid I think it ended up being. Yesterday, I was hit with that feeling again when I remembered The Golden Spoon. With that drama, the thing that came to mind first was "ugh, she was SUCH a needless bitch😒😑😔". There was no need for her to share the spoon with the guy's dad and devastate him. I think when it was airing, I tried to somewhat understand her because she was lonely or whatever but ugh, no. She was so cruel with that.
And even with that, I still preferred the drama over the webtoon cause both she and Seongchun were vile and cruel and unlikable. Ugh, that webtoon didn't leave me feeling good at all.
I was tempted to rewatch The Golden Spoon for Lee Jong Won because I couldn't find his scenes on youtube but ugh, just thinking about her and the evil dad is making me go nah.

I didn't really enjoy the whole show but I love the OSTs and I'm still listening to Sudden Shower. Everytime that song plays, I can totally picture the two of them being adorably idiotic in love and desperate in trying to save each other. In my mind, LR is a 6 or 8 episode show where I'll have all the lovely and swoony scenes of Sol and Sunjae, and that is enough.

The 2 best performances of Junho's career will always be "Just between Lovers" and "Chief Kim" [They also clearly demonstrate his range]

He was competent in "The Red Sleeve" but i feel like that drama as a whole was greater than the sum of its individual parts.

My first drama of his was Red Sleeve Cuff and Jun-ho really captivated me with his portrayal esp the final episode. After that, I watched Just Between Lovers and recently Chief Kim. I agree with you he was phenomenal in JBL and Chief Kim, but he was as incredible in RSC.

One of the plot lines in the first two episodes tvN’s LOVE NEXT DOOR (Netflix) that seems to have been overlooked in the recap and comments is the business state (or lack thereof) of Seung-hyo’s (Jung Hae-in) architectural firm. From the information revealed already the firm is not in good shape.
We are first introduced to Seung-hyo doing research at a columbarium for a design project he has in mind. Speaking with a long-time staff member (character actor Lee Bong-ryun) Seung-hyo is introduced to us as a serious and empathetic guy. The problem is that this project has not been commissioned (as far as I can tell) and is only a dream project of his. Doing this research is not helping to pay for the electric bill at the new office building the firm is just moving into. In retrospect it might not have been a good idea financially to take on a new office.
His architectural firm is a firm of 3 persons who don’t seem to be doing much architecturally.

In the recent KBS drama DARE TO LOVE ME (Viki) an important plot line revolved around a clothing design firm our FL Hong-do (Lee Yoo-young) eventually went to work for. It was a small firm that supposedly took Paris by storm but in reality not much in the way of clothing design was ever being done so I never bought into the idea.

Sometimes in dramas the professional work that leads are supposed to be doing gets short shrift I guess is what I am trying to say.

Or they go in some random direction like in The Auditors where someone got confused about the job spec and based the characters in one profession but had them do another profession’s work🤣

That is correct. Contractors on land projects in South Korea do have commercial and civil lien rights for unpaid services provided to owner or developer, but standard contract practice is that those lien rights are waived in the actual contract.

Question for long-term people on this site. When making posts with memes, do you put the memes on Pinterest and then copy the link to this site? I have heard some talk about this and wanted to confirm.

Also, for people who make their own memes, what are you using to make moving gifs or to add text to pictures?

Thanks

do you put the memes on Pinterest and then copy the link to this site?

You can upload your pics on any hosting site, such as Pinterest, imgur, tumblr and get the image address from there. The image address is something starting with https and ending with .jpg, .gif, .webp,... such as this one

https://i.pinimg.com/564x/c0/80/8b/c0808b91d54ef644310d746566b0b913.jpg

By putting only this link in your post, your pic won't display. You need to put this address in between 2 angle brackets, 2 straight-down quotation marks, and the fix part img src=. That whole command line will display the pic for you. (Note: The main page, such as this thread, won't allow any html codes though).

A brief instruction on how to post pics here

what are you using to make moving gifs or to add text to pictures?

To add text to still pictures is easy, you can use MS-powerpoint (then save it as picture) or I sometimes use Preview app.

To make GIFs, you'll need short clips. If the clips are from, say, youtube, you can use y2mate to download it then trim and crop it as you like before using it to make GIFs.

Another way to create clips is to screen-record what you are watching on screen, such as Netlix. Streaming platforms like Netlix, Viki,... often give you a black screen when you try to do screenshots or screen-recordings. To avert that, you will need to turn off the feature Web acceleration in your browser first, then you're good to go. Browsers that allow that: Chrome, Firefox, Opera.

Tool I often use to record the screen: Quicktime Player.

Tool I often use to insert text to clips: imovie. imovie can do most of the things I want, such as insert texts, change videos from .mov to .mp4.

Tools to make GIFs from short clips: giphy dot come, ezgif dot com, imgur dot com.
