Premiere Watch: Love Andante

Time slot: TBA
Broadcaster: Lifetime
Genre: Rom-com, fantasy
Episode count: 8
Global Streamer: Kocowa

Reasons to watch: We’ve got another new streamer on our hands! Lifetime is set to release its debut original drama Love Andante, and I do declare they need to get better at their press because there hasn’t been a whole lot to go on with this one. What we do know is that the drama sounds like a delightful (low budget?) trope sandwich as a fantasy rom-com featuring opposites attract, forced cohabitation, fish-out-of-water hijinks, and more. Newbies Kwon Hyun-bin and Song Ji-woo are our OTP — one from South Korea, one from North Korea, and both now living in the “Peace Village” that’s newly established. This has “I need drama candy binge fest” written all over it.

TL;DR: Wants to be CLOY junior, but is probably going to be more like that webdrama you watched at 3am and still can’t remember the name of.

I'll check it out mostly out of morbid curiosity. I've already forgotten the title of the most recent unwatchable North/South mess. 🤣

You're not the only one - I'm here trying it out, too! Missvictrix's description seems VERY accurate as of episode 1 😂

I would probably check this out if I had Kocowa, but alas

It does sound like CLOY lite. But hopefully this has a lot of cuteness and heart.

Does anyone feel uncomfortable romanticizing the NK/SK couple relationship? I can't describe in words why it makes me feel uncomfortable.

For me, it's because the reality of North Korea is so horrifying that only creating a fictional alternative NK makes depicting it in a romance or a comedy palatable (CLOY did this, too). The pretense risks reducing the repressive violence of the NK regime to just another set of potentially humorous political and cultural differences - Belgium vs France, say. I'm willing to roll with a fantasy, but it inevitably comes with an uncomfortable comparison to the real lives of real humans there.

I actually liked how CLOY humanized the NK villagers, though, and they did consult with refugees to try to ensure accuracy. This premise seems way riskier in terms of romanticizing NK, imo.

I liked the villagers in CLOY, but even with refugee input, it was pretty rose-colored compared to what we know about reality. This show isn't romanticizing them, though, it's clownifying them. Quick drop - I barely finished episode 1 even at 1.5x.

Oh no! I can't watch this even if I wanted to, but sadly I'm not too surprised.

CLOY was definitely rose-colored, but being from the US where NK is more shown as a monster, it gave me a more nuanced view of the country than I had before. I think it also makes sense that the village had things a little better because it was connected with the military and, I assume, a higher songbun

I translated all the scripts for this and it's as corny as hell. Still I guess if the leads have good chemistry...

Interesting 🤔 how come the scripts needed translating?

I assume they were looking for overseas financing. The other reason would be because they sold the series for an overseas remake, but that doesnt seem likely in this case.

I get to read lots of dramas before most people know they exist. Last year I did all the scripts for Polaris, which is currently filming. Right now, I've just started a drama called "I deflowered the male lead".

Wow, what kind of a title is that🫢 sounds like the kind of thing that a bunch of idiot teenage boys would be boasting about in relation to teenage girls.

I love the cautionary TL;DR. Er, safer to follow through recaps then I guess. 🙃😅
