Really? I thought most hosting sites have SSL/TLS certificates as part of their package? (Not that I’m an authority on the subject). By a lot, do you mean more than $150-$200 a year?
If you look to the left of the address bar of most browsers (to the left of the website address), usually if you see a green locked padlock, it means that the website it secure. There’s usually an icon you can click there for more info.

The school I work for had to pay a lot just to have our homepage secured. I guess, money is the primary factor.
