Half of me feels like I should be mad at this showโs obnoxiously perfect happy ending and the other half of me is like โno it was in character with the rest of the show itโs a bloody fairytale itโs not gonna end sadlyโ. Like one side of me is going โdoes the perfect bow on the end mean the stakes are meaningless and the sacrifices have no emotional weight?โ, and the other side is going โbut Guibangjang and Weol Ju wouldโve died 100000 times over for each other and for Kang Bae and they accepted their fates selflessly with no expectations, and then were rewarded for their sacrifice, so no, the sacrifices didnโt mean nothing.โ
On the other other hand all you had to do, Show, was explain why Guibangjang didnโt have to go to Eternal Hell or whatever it was in place of Weol Ju and I would be like 100% happy with the ending instead of you know, 98% happy. Oh and maybe also explain why they suddenly aged like 20 years after dying in Joseon, too.
Thatโs like it.
Like, I can come up with an explanation, (1) Heaven was like well you already died for her once so that cancels the contract, 2) Heaven negotiated with him and said if he went to find Weol Ju in the staircase abyss they’d consider the contract void or something, 3) he really did just trade her soul for some police files), but thatโs not my job, and you didnโt SHOW me any of those.
Ahem.
Anyway.
Iโm gonna go to bed before I start overthinking in what capacity of mortality they returned to the Living Realm and and tomorrow you might even get like a very rare thing that is a uhm positive essay on a kdrama, so please mentally prepare yourselves for that truly once in a lifetime event, you know, as horrifying as me liking something sounds, it does happen occasionally.
If your impression of me has been shattered, Iโm so sorry, there are free returns at the bar.
(Was I still kinda holding out on a cheesy True Loveโs Kiss despite the fact that I got a double familial sacrifice instead, which is in many ways objectively better? Yesโฆ)
Haha, I have exactly the same thoughts about how come they didnโt explain why Guibangjang managed to escape Eternal Hell and can be together with Weol Ju. It did take away a small part of my overall enjoyment of the happy ending but then after 1 minute of (over)thinking, I decided, you know what, I am not going to harp on the small quibbles and just focus on the happy – the three of them are back together 💃🏻💃🏻 Kang-bae deserves all the happiness in the world. The three of them are just so precious
I guess there are some of us on that boat, but… wanna know something? The minute I saw that happiness reunion in Queen Yeomra’s office and our Kang Bae in the ssanggapju again, I just didn’t care.
This was Queen Yeom Ra’s mess, the soul getting out of hell… with Shamshin petitioning for Weol Joo, my guess is Yeom Banjang also pleaded so Yeomra stepped up before this all went to Jade emperor.
Awww I liked the ending. I guess I rationalized it as “they’ve suffered for 500 years. That’s enough. Even the heaven’s gotta have mercy and break protocol sometimes”
And to my surprise, I liked the cookie-cutter villain. I thought in this case, it made sense.
I shocked myself by enjoying it thoroughly, even with all them glaring flaws.

Awww man they could’ve got a sweet as cameo for the Jade Emperor at the end and have him just pardon everyone for doing so well.

Oh how I want that and it be Yoo Seungho. He was the perfect Jade Emperor.

I remembered him being a celestial being in Arang & The Magistrate – that would definitely be a great cameo hee…

I was thinking the exact name thing. An Arang reference would’ve so perfect.

(oh no I also loved this drama haha like a lot. Also in spite of flaws, most of which were minor. )
