Such a terrible thing to hear from a mother.
I have a friend whose brother is autistic, and once he told me that while growing up he was worried that he had to take care of him if anything happened to their parents. One day he told his mum how he felt (he remembered he was 11), and she told him never to worry, that his brother was his brother, that mum and dad will take care of him and when they couldn’t they would find a solution, because that was a not a burden for him to carry, and that the only thing he had to do was to love his brother.
While watching I couldn’t help thinking about him.
I have a colleague whose child is in yhe autism spectrum. I actually asked her if she wants to have another child so the firstborn has a companion, and she said that it’s not a reason enough. She also does not want to burden her would-be second child with his sibling. She’s wise.
It also illustrates that I, too, have the same thoughts as Gang-tae’s mom. ☹
She probably just said it without thinking, she’s drunk. She might have not even meant it that way but it impacted Gang-tae so damn hard. It made him feel like he’s a thing and not a person. 🙁
Yeah. She maybe felt that way inside but it doesnt mean that she doesn’t love him. To him, it sounded like he’d be useless if not for his brother but I’m sure mom loved him too.

Isn’t that way worse? Like the adage says, “What soberness conceals, drunkenness reveals.” ☹
