Rewatching Hamilton for the nth time I really have one question left. What product does Daveed Diggs use in his hair? So shiny! So bouncy! Such defined curls!

I wanna know. Especially now that my pandemic lockdown afro is becoming its own planet.😝

As a superfan, you might enjoy Howard Ho’s How Hamilton Works YouTube series. He’s a superb communicator (as well as songwriter, lyricist, and playwright).

Speaking of big hair, I’ve recently found that it’s a bit trickier to use video meeting backgrounds with my hair. My computer faces the wall and I don’t always people to see what’s behind me. (You don’t need to see my laundry, people.) But the video conferencing software can’t always detect the edges of my hair so the backgrounds end up swirling around me like the Aurora Borealis.

I havent even tried to use a background. My hair is an entity unto itself. This pandemic has brought me thisclose to reaching for a relaxer. I fondly recall easy ponytails and hair that swings. But I also recall my last relaxer that almost took my scalp clean off.

Oh gosh with the creamy crack, that’s me rn. I’ve been twisting it myself but I’m not very good so it looks….well I won’t be chased out of the room but because I know what it could look like it’s bugging me!! I think I need to watch more Youtube tutorials now. Or maybe order some clip-ins or something 😭😭

I swear I watch and follow all of the natural 4c youtubers and have for the last 3 years. And yet all I know how to do is put on a headband or do puffs. I do not understand hair at all.

I couldn’t do a good looking puff if my life depended on it. I need a How to 4c Hair For Dummies because this is so hard. And the wash n go tutorials drive me nuts. It either has 5900 steps or she gets out of the shower, shakes her head 5 times and viola! Major curl definition. I almost shook my head off trying to shake my non-existent curls into submission. I want to have a nice big chop tale too but I’m becoming stressed now.

I hope we get it someday. ✊

Ha! I relaxed my hair once, back in 1987. I came back from the salon and my housemate said, “Jesus! You look like a different race!” I’m half Chinese (Mom is from Malaysian peninsula) and with straight hair, I could’ve passed for Malay. In fact, during a recent trip to Borneo, several people asked me if I was mixed (which I’m never asked on the peninsula.)

I live in a university town where every time of hairstyle is cool. It’s kind of great that way though micro-aggressions abound. My husband reported witnessing an awkward exchange between his boss (a white woman) and a fellow Black colleague who wears her hair in a multitude of styles, from relaxed, to protective styles, to afros. When she came to work with relaxed hair one week, the boss could’t stop saying how “professional” she looked. “Ah, that looks so nice! So professional!”

        Yeeeeeeeeshhhh.

My next goal is to have hair so big that I become my own background—like you. This is challenging because my iMac has a very wide view. Maybe by Christmas?

The ole “it looks more-(insert supposed compliment here) 🙄. I once had a colleague tell me I my hair(straight wig with bangs) looked so much nicer. Than what exactly?? Gosh.

May you get that big hair by Christmas 🙏. Fighting!

My hair is pretty big when its fully picked all the way out. But I have a LOT of hair. Its really thick and is a decent length. Its been picked all the way out exactly one time. My niece did it for me. It was gorgeous and light and fluffy and took her 3 eps of GoT. When I try and pick my hair out my arm gets tired before im even a 1/4 of the way thru! And then the pick breaks. Combing out and moisturizing last night in prep of washing today I lost a good comb up there!

She kept saying the processed hair was more professional? I hope she doesnt have any say over how yall are allowed to wear your hair! Thats ridicu3. Just when I think that there are too many picturebooks about brown girls and their hair someone proves that they are necessary. Not for kids. For adults.

@tsutsuloo and @rueffie reporting back on my Daveed Diggs hair experiment.

So last night I used Carols Daughter Wash Day Delight and Knot on My Watch to detangle my hair, comb it out and braid it into 4 sections. This morning I washed it with Coconut Curls shampoo and conditioner (I let it set with a plastic cap for 5 minutes) and. finished up with coconut curls frizz defying curl defining milk. My 4c curls have NEVER looked so defined! And bouncy! Its not particularly shiny but I hit it with an olive oil shiny hair polish (which I worried would weight my hair down but it didnt!).

I have to say Im tempted to slide across a desk and sing “well he aint never gon’ be president now! One less thing to worry about!”
