So I finished reading Howl’s moving castle 🙂

I watched the Ghibli movie many times before but haven’t read the book yet ^^’
It is two different stories even though many characters are almost the same.
While reading it, I was surprised by how different the book and the movie were,
but also understood why Miyazaki made some choices and changes for his movie.
Both are great but should be seen as different stories instead of saying the movie wasn’t faithful to the book (also one shouldn’t forget the beautiful OST from Hisaishi <3 )

Thank you again @snarkyjellyfish for your recommandation earlier this year 😀 , it was the trigger to finally read that book after all those years ^^'. I'll stay with the same author since I borrowed some of the Chrestomanci books for this summer 🙂 .

When I first read the novel I was also surprised by how different it was from the animated film.

Oh Yay! Howl’s Moving Castle is my favorite book ever. And I totally understand the choices made for the movie, so I’ve always treated it as it’s own thing rather than an adaptation. There are a few related books to Howl, not sequels exactly, but you get to see Howl and Sophie again – Castle in the Air and The House of Many Ways. The latter was one of the last books Diana Wynn Jones wrote.

I love the Chrestomanci books too. I reread a few of them last year. I can never decide which is my favorite. Diana Wynn Jones is possibly the best young adult fantasy authors ever, in my opinion – there is something for everyone in her work. I think she paved the way for Harry Potter and so many others to exist. Apparently she was at Oxford in the 50s and was in one of Tolkien’s classes? I hope you enjoy the Chrestomanci books!

Thanks for the other references , I’ll check if library has them 🙂 .
I liked her writing style and how we reached that end .

“Apparently she was at Oxford in the 50s and was in one of Tolkien’s classes?” oh that’s awesome, I read some stories about Tolkien, this guy is just amazing : True dedication , endless imagination and huge knowledge led to the huge legacy he left ^^ .
Thank you 🙂 , hoping dramas or shows won’t distract me too much from my reading this summer ^^’, will hopefully make another post for the Chrestomanci books :).

I can’t wait to see what you think about Chrestomanci! The world-building in them is really great and very imaginative. Her writing style is great – that sort of dry humor but also very sensible and accessible. I remember reading somewhere that she started writing because she couldn’t find books for her own children that weren’t preachy or dull, so she just decided to write them herself. As for the Tolkien thing – well, this lovely post from Neil Gaiman tells the story a better than I can, and I love it so much because it totally tracks with my understanding of both of them. (I remember I wrote a report on Tolkien in the 4th grade and somehow that of all things I’ve learned as a child, that report has stuck with me.)

thanks for the link, didn’t know Tolkien behaved like that to have more writing time ^^’.
It’s nice that she started writing to provide better books for her children 🙂
