The chinese drama Dance of the Sky Empire is overall enjoyable, even though its writing got me frustrated. Still, I keep a quite good memory of it thanks to this guy.
Xu Kai’s character appears here at first as a playful and mischevious but later he reveals to be also a softy at heart 💖
Even though this kind of role isn’t new for him, I didn’t get tired of it as he perfectly nailed it and his portrayal of Li Xuan was really enjoyable. His hilarious and crazy expressions always make me giggle and I swear I will never get tired of his (failed) winks and smiles.
It’s actually the fifth drama I have watched of him and he impressed me again with his acting. His eyes expressed so much and seeing him being sad made me want to jump into my screen to give him hugs.
I actually don’t remember if I have ever felt that for any characters ?
Now, I need a hug too. Where are his other dramas ? 😭😭

I have noone else to spazz about this show. I’m still left with 4 episodes but I’ll catch up to them soon. This is a kind of shut your brain and watch show but still with some substance. I liked the whole Kunwu vs human conflict between the leads but I know the story wasn’t well done. This story however, was still more meaty than Once upon a Time in Lingjian Mountain, so I give it that. Which also shows that I may just watch any show for Xu Kai now 😂. But yeah as of yet I’m not disappointed in this show, just know thay it had a lot of potential to be better than what it was because the premise was nice. I’ll have to say though, at one pount I thought Prince Mu was better for Su Youlian not only because of SLS but also the animosity was huge between the leads and i still don’t know how they managed to solve that. So yeah, they focused a lot on secondary characters in this show.
I’d have to say I was skeptical about Wu Jiayi and Xu Kai pairing up, but they pair up fine and do have a good chemistry. Also they don’t disappoint when it comes to acting. I just checked the bts of their crying scene from ep 13 maybe (when Su Youlian leaves the realm they’re stuck in) and their work is commendable.

Yeah I totally agree with you about the fact that your brain must shut up to enjoy it. I think as I liked the premise I started to have expectations that may have been too big for it. I’m still a bit bitter that it had the potential to be really great but they ruined it as they lost focus on their main plot during many episodes. Though I think Long Wei’er’s storyline is interesting, but I wish it was done in some other way..
Actually, like you at some point I started to think Prince Mu was also a good choice for Su Youlian. I feel bad for him, he’s a good guy and he was always there for her.

Btw, did you know that’s not the first time Wu Jiayi and Xu Kai were pairing up together? They were together in Untouchable Lovers that I intend to watch someday but as they only have supporting roles so I will maybe just ff to their scenes.

Xu Kai can have good chemistry with anyone though. I just completed the show and while I won’t specifically recommend it to someone, it was a nice, easy watch that really helped me in staying distracted. Now I’ll have to wait till Xu Kai has his next drama on air lol. I’m open to other light shows like this one but I know I will enjoy every Xu Kai show for his sake, maybe not a serious one though. I’ll say Gu Yanzhen still tops these three characters I have seen him play and AMA too was a good mix of substance and fun. This show had lots of potential that it didn’t live upto but I think all that comes under censorship and budget issues.

Hello! I’m not completely sure, but I think this is my first time writing here in Dramabeans, and I’m writing because of him! I just recently discover him, when I start watching AMA on viki after seeing the thumbnail so many times (millitary themes are not my cup of tea), and how happy I am! Gu Yanzhen got me hooked soooo fast. And so, after that I knew the main couple had a previous drama together, and there I went to watch The Legends and his cinnamon roll Mo Qing. And then I watched Ling Jian Mountain and now I’m finishing Dance of the Sky Empire. So I’m really glad to know I’m not the only one that is mesmerized by him.

Like you I found out Xu Kai in AMA and then watched almost all his dramas (I still have to watch Untouchable Lovers but he has only a small role there…). I had even watched Story of Yanxi Palace (70 episodes !) for him and actually liked it a lot and it’s one of my favourite cdramas, even though he is only the second lead and is bald (actually he still looks good like that hehe).

I’ve been keeping myself from finishing AMA because Yanzhen is my favorite. And I still have 8 eps to finish the Legends. But I finished Ling Jian Mountain and only have 2 eps to finish Dance of… That I’m about to watch now. Then I’ll finish the Legends. And yes, I’m seriously considering watching Yanxi palace just for him, waiting for new dramas to air. Maybe the egame drama will be aired soon. I really want to watch him in a modern setting.

Xu Kai can have good chemistry with anyone though. I’ve been keeping myself from finishing AMA because Yanzhen is my favorite. And I still have 8 eps to finish the Legends.
