Ok I actually thought of one while I was choosing my favourite writer.
Trade Wind by M M Kaye. I love M M Kaye, her historical romances are amazing, but this one is so deeply flawed. It’s great and atmospheric and I love the setting and the hero and the heroine except (spoiler) he totally rapes her out of revenge and then they fall in love DOES THAT MAKE ANY SENSE
Total play out of historical bodiceripper playbooks. I havent read one in a decade or more but I know in every Johanna Lindsey book the guy ALWAYS rapes the girl but they fall in love in the end.
It’s not a bodice ripper though (trust me when I say I have read PLENTY of those lol) so I wasn’t expecting it 😄 it’s a shame because it’s an otherwise good read
