The conversation between Ji-pyung and Do-san in Ji-pyung’s car at the beginning of episode 3 reminds me of an old joke. A logician gets on to an elevator with another man. The man, wanting to make small talk, asks if the logician has children. The logician says, “Yes. I have one child.” In response, the man asks, “Is it a boy or a girl?” The logician replies, “Yes.”

I actually took a logic class in college (does that explain anything??).
One exam question was to define so-and-so (sorry, it’s been 50 years so I forget some details), and I wrote that I didn’t recall that term but it sounded like blah-blah-blah. Prof wrote “good guess” on my paper and gave me full points on that question.

About 30 years later it occurred to me that maybe that was the point. It was a LOGIC class after all — maybe we were supposed to be able to logic things out if we didn’t remember them — or even if it hadn’t been covered at all 🙂

I mean the surprising thing to me is that you remember something that happened 50 years ago. I don’t remember anything about exams I wrote six months ago, much less exams or assignments I had from longer than that.

I took many mathematical logic classes in university (Including a graduate course). Basic logic is useful in everyday life (knowing basic logical fallacies like affirming the consequent, knowing the difference between necessary conditions and sufficient conditions, appreciating basic proof techniques, etc.), but advanced logic is pretty esoteric, even in mathematics (it’s a pretty niche subject, to say the least). The one nice thing, though, is that there are some concepts from logic that seem to be culturally in vogue — Godel’s incompleteness theorem, Cantor’s work on infinity, etc. — so when people talk about these things and pretend to know what they’re saying, I can safely roll my eyes and ignore them.

FWIW, I don’t recall what the question was, only that I admitted I was guessing and that Prof wrote “Good guess”. That kinda stands out in my academic career. And I just took the one basic logic class and have zero recollection of Godel, Cantor, etc. You can roll your eyes now 🙂

Oh, I only roll my eyes at people who pretend they know things that they clearly don’t! LOL

I still think it’s pretty cool that you remember this. My episodic memory is trash.
