I am tired of every show pretending that billionaire tech moguls do it for social work and goodness of heart, they fucking don’t…so can we please have a leading lady who is realistic #StartUp

I mean I think it’s not so simple? Having spent a lot of time with people who’ve worked in start-ups (including people who’ve started reasonably successful businesses), I think lots of tech innovators do decide to pursue a project because of its impact. That’s not to say they don’t want money or renown; it’s just that they also really do think they’re working on things that are important, that will help society.

And what percentage is that compared to people who value money? Korean dramas don’t just overblow this thing, according to dramas only Evvviiiiil people do it for money.

A lot? It seems like the culture with tech start-ups. Yeah, they want money, but they also genuinely think they’re doing something important or socially valuable.

Also, I don’t think this show has portrayed money-seeking as evil? Like it does seem like Dal-mi and everybody else wants to make money. However, they also seem to have other motivations as well and, in a ranking of those motivations, money might not be as high a priority as other things. I think the show’s message is that the pursuit of money uber alles might not be good, but that makes sense to me. If you have talent and the privilege of starting a business in a tech incubator like the Sandbox, why not try to start a business that is socially useful while also making money?

This is both right and wrong. Because its also the most basic tone and method of pitching it to potential investors. But when you peel the outer layer, what you find below varies. To be frank, if I were to pitch an idea and there’s a social impact angle, I would absolutely confidently make it sound as if it will change the world. Its overdone at the moment but it sells. My experience has been take it with a grain of salt.

Also I said tech moguls, I am sure there are moderately successful tech start ups focusing on social impact projects. Its also a part of branding process now.

I think tech moguls are probably the same. I doubt they’re in it only for the money.

i beg to differ… any startup idea can never be for money when incepted. its has to be for the impact. and when the impact becomes significant thats when money comes in picture.
And thats when someone normal who was behind his/her dream turned to a big hot shot.

I am saying from my personal experience, after going tons of people at such level reading about their life story as to how and why they started.

CreativeLive’s founder Chase Jarvis in an interview told Never start anything for money, start for your love and passion for it. Money will come eventually. thats how startup ideas are born.

and one more thing… in any such startups or business started from scratch when going gets tough (which it will be for sure) its never the money which keeps the them going but always the love for the idea, passion for the result that keeps them going despite the darkest times.

After hearing the many congressional hearings over the last few years, that sounds overly optimistic to me. An idea starts from passion but pretending that if it generates no monetary value, it will sustain or grow in today’s industry landscape is inaccurate. Also, once you play ball in the Forbes list, most people operate on a different spectrum beyond moral right and wrong. Money does rule there.

obviously money rules and money HAS to rule.. otherwise everyone will die hungry in this world. and I am not denying that at all.
But when it all starts then money should be second.. thats all i am saying.

I have not met many people who put money second, maybe you were lucky enough to meet them. Most have something to prove, a name to build and money to earn and are hella cocky, at least in Bay area. Money should be second and perhaps would be second if it were an ideal world. I have not been part of that world in my experience.

I don’t know a single thing about Start Ups, but I’m telling you something, I only work for money, not for the fun of it. If I was a payed my wages while I do nothing I would do nothing related to my job. So we all do it for the money.

thats very correct.. i did my job for 10+ years (though it started as my love for IT) just for money as i had to pay my bills and take care of my family.. but i was also pursuing my hobbies which i loved crazily.
and now its been 2 years leaving my job and working as a freelancer for those hobbies and earning (though very less than my salary) too… so for me it started just fir my love for creativity which is now bringing in money.
thats how start ups shape up too.
