Some thoughts on a bit of Start Up discussion I’ve seen, from an outside perspective. I haven’t started this drama yet but have been keeping an eye on comments/reviews from various sites as I prefer to marathon and don’t mind spoilers, considering if a drama is worth to pick up after its run.

I’m kind of surprised at how hung up a few people are on who is designated Male Lead or Second Lead, the kdrama formula that usually determines endgame OTP. Although the tropes and kdrama frame is still there, the refreshing character mold is most important to me. Like many people, I have preconceived notions of main lead status “rights” from my experience with kdramas, so it’s nice to be surprised at which narratives this writer decided to develop, and which characters get an interesting story/quirks (as well be sad at which ones doesn’t). If we take away the marketing and just blind dive into the drama, what’s left? Strong writing, weak writing. And actors that fit (or do not fit) their role (whether its “marketed” as a main lead or not).

Flashbacks to discussions around Dream High and ICHYV.

Still keeping this drama on my must watch list and hopefully it ties up well enough.
