2020 Round Up
Day 15 – the secondary character you’ll never forget

The stand-out secondary character for me this year is Shim Myeong-yeo (played by Moon Jeong-hee) in I’ll Come to You When the Weather is Fine. The depth of her performance and emotion is all the more impressive in that she’s wearing dark glasses for a solid chunk of the time. You can’t see her eyes, but you can feel everything going on inside her. The relationship between SMY and Hae-won is layered as well (I thoroughly enjoyed the prickly aunt/petulant niece scenes). While the relationship in the beginning feels distant and cool, the subtle unveiling shows a lot of love and devotion, and it’s played realistically.

Myeong-yeo has put herself into a deep freeze just to survive and to protect the people she loves. She actually has incredible heart. Both fierce and vulnerable, and in the beginning perhaps seeming a bit at odds with her niece, I love how by the end all three of the Shim/Mok women are so clearly cut from the same (wonderfully resilient and fierce) cloth – and that it’s not too late for her to have a second lease on a happy life.

Moon Jeong-hee was wonderful in portraying Shim Myeong-yeo. The many different layers of the character were so perfectly and subtly acted, I can’t imagine another actress in this role.

Absolutely. Moon Jeong-hee’s performance here was what tipped the balance for me to watch Search, TBH.

I was thinking about starting Search because of her, but didn’t have time then. Later I was put off by the comments here. Did you like Search?

Hmmmm…I didn’t hate it but I didn’t like it. I generally liked the leads and MJH, but honestly I kind of finished it for the bean since it was only 10 eps. But she’s great in it! Just the story starts out strong but doesn’t really carry all the way through the run, if that makes sense?

It makes sense. Sadly there are a lot of dramas where one could say this. Thanks for your evaluation!

I watched Search mainly because of her.
The show is fun, but because I took it for what it was. It’s so bad it’s good.
I liked all the characters, but the story didn’t make much sense.

It’s a big plus when the characters are likeable. But I guess I will avoid it, if the story doesn’t make sense.

We’re just watching this now (on ep 10), and I couldn’t agree more. Thanks for the spoiler-free confirmation that she gets a happy ending, too. This is a drama where I really hope everyone is safe and loved at the end, accepted both despite and for their flaws, and not like …eaten by the mountain or something.

In this drama, getting eaten by a mountain actually could be a total possibility, now that I think about it. I’m glad I didn’t spoil her ending, but now I am reminded that I should still tread carefully about what I write here! 😅

I was surprised by her character. She seemed so rocky and cold, but she had gone through so much! I felt so sad for her!

I was glad to see the actress as a guest in Mystic Pop-up bar, but even a little disappointed when just her story seemed the weakest.

And in Search she again plays a really different character, too. I think she’s a very versatile actress.

That plot twist was something I would never forget. Bawled out at that scene when she witnessed her sister’s abuse.

Yeah. And how both she and her sister at first glance seem so cold and detached, and then you realize how much they love each other in that moment. Leaking eyes everywhere.
