Day 12: Oldie that you loved: So, this is my 2020 oldie list, lot’s of good stuff (and a couple of stinkers) here:
Are You Human Too?
Because This is My First Life
Extraordinary You
Fight For My Way
Memories of the Alhambra
Signal
The Boy Next Door
The Great Seducer
The Third Charm
Thirty But Seventeen
To.Jenny
WATCHER
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo

Also watched some dramas with my kids. They loved Midnight Pop Up Bar, and oldies Eulachacha Waikiki and Oh My Baby (until it became too Baby-light and Romance-heavy). Looking for another to watch with them, Beanies, please share your tips for funny dramas without much romance!

There are also some that I loved at first, but started feeling too darned long and I quietly wandered towards other dramas. Arang and the Magistrate, The Last Empress and Matrimonial Chaos… still there on my Currently Watching list.

So, which one was my favourite? Hard choice. Liked Signal very much. I liked the story – it felt fresh to me-, the characters were compelling, and the acting was great. It also cemented my love for Kim Hyesoo and and brought Lee Jehoon and his beautiful nose into my radar (yes, I’m weird, no comments).
But I need to be honest and confess my even greater love for campy, silly, Are you Human too?. If I’m going to pick a favourite, it’s got to be the most fun instead of the “best”, and that involves Seo Kang Joon being a superhero-like robot AND a mean chaebol in the same drama, and all the cute that they managed to cram into this weird mix of sci-fi/romcom/corporate conspiracy/doppelganger drama. Among other fun watches, this was the most fun for me, over the top chaebols and creepy robot-kisses and all.

Special mention to To.Jenny, the most unassuming and sweet drama that features epic Tiramisu Cake song.

Correction: ops, just realized that I watched My little Baby with my kids, not Oh, my baby

Under 12! They’re into female leads with fighting skills, and slapstick humor. But they have zero attention span for romance or conspiracies, so it’s kind of hard to find k-drama matches for the three of us

Ohhh thats tough! Cos i mostly watch romcoms 😂

If they like strong female leads with fighting skills – have you seen Strong Woman?
If some shows feel too long – Splash Splash Love won’t.
If you really really don’t want much romance it gets hard, especially for kids. Maybe Voice, Mystery Queen, Pegasus Market, Zombie Detective… Or (gasp) switch to another country 🙁

Yes, they loved Strong Woman, but the mysoginist psycho was a bit too much – a lot of fast fowarding was in order, and still I didn’t feel right about stuff they saw… On the other hand, Bongbong kicking ass, flying gangsters and poop liquor were right up their lane 🤣
Pegasus Market has been on my radar for a while, I’ll try it out with them, thanks! Same for Splash Splash love – bonus Kim Seulgi, who just elevates everything! 😍

What do you mean, switching to another country, Lord Cobol? Outrageous! This is all part of my cunning plan to get the kids into k-drama and thus have viewing buddies when they get older 😉

“Most fun” tends to stay in my mind much stronger than “the best”. Like, Nokdu’s Flower was a perfectly flawless drama for me, but I might never remember to recommend or even rewatch it. But take Hyena. I can count quite a few problems it had, but I will recommemd it to just about anyone, and even the thought of rewatching it makes me giggle.

Oh and for a drama to watch with your kids, does Special Labor Inspector Jo fit the bill?

Totally agree! I tend to value fun over quality. Funny that you mention NF, been watching it over the last couple of weeks and I’m loving it, but I’m dreading ep 16, because I can foretell a lot of pain… Crack-drama it is not 😢

NF is very very heavy and dark and much too real for being a crack-drama. But amazingly well-made.

Watched ep 16 and only now I realize that NF is way longer than the usual 16 eps 😄 That means I still have 8 eps to go, yay! And, yes, it’s dark but definitely good. I feel for all of them – things are going downhill really fast – but conflicted Goblin Yihyung is the one who’s hurting my heart the most. I have a soft spot for loathsome characters, and YHY is definitely bringing his A game to this

I do NOT have a soft spot for loathsome characters and my heart still hurt for him. Maybe because he felt so real and believable.

You have a point, he’s not loathsome. Where I am, his course of action is ambiguous but I think I know what he is up to… But some of his actions so far have been loathsome, that’s what I meant
